Non-primary catchers that could serve as a backup catcher?

I can only think of two... guys like Kyle Scwharber and Buster Posey? Schwarbs way cheaper, but I want a serviceable guy that could be a backup catcher but also play elsewhere. Suggestions?

Some people have used Josh Donaldson, depending on your definition of "serviceable".

The King of Catcher Utility Players is the Diamond Craig Biggio. He's a good hitter vs. lefties, ok hitter vs. righties, rates around 86 at Catcher, 73 at 1B, 61 at 2B, 94 in LF, 86 in RF. And he's crazy fast. He's basically the only guy in the game that can play all 8 fielding positions at an average or better level, plus he has a bat and wheels. You could make him your primary backup at nearly every position (maybe not SS and 3B).

Good luck finding him in the AH and good luck affording him if you do. Here's his ratings:

Craig Biggio

I believe there are Jose Oquendo cards floating around. I believe he played every position on the field including pitcher in his career. Maybe he has a catcher rating in game.

Thought so...in 1988 Oquendo played all 9 positions in the same year. The only to ever do it in the same season since 1918. I believe his card is a 1988

Oquendo only comes with a 91 rating at 2B, unfortunately.

Another one is Buck Ewing. 95-rated catcher who can play every position on the field, is a speed demon, and hits very well. He can even pitch. He has 1.6 WAR for me already this season. His only down-side is that he does have low IF/OF error ratings, which do depress his overalls a bit.

It's 1989, when he was almost exclusively 2B.

I have my Ewing training at every position minus pitcher. He plays about 5 games per week, usually at 2 or 3 different positions, and is also a great pinch hitter/runner. A truly invaluable utility player if you can catch him in the AH.

Can you post a screenshot of his splits? I've never seen him before. Looks like I have to take back what I said about Biggio being the King here.

Here you go! As getheroff mentioned, Ewing's error rating is the only major hole in his game, but that is par for the course with historical cards. His versatility is well worth the few additional errors IMHO.

Carlos Santana (66OVR) has catcher ratings but no position rating for catcher. I used him as a backup catcher when in bronze.

Yogi Berra (92OVR) is primarily a catcher, of course, but also has a rating at left field.

Maybe in the NL? Both Bert Campaneris in 1965 and Cesar Tovar in 1968 played every position in the same game, let alone in the same season.

Didn't Romine do it as well a couple years ago?

There have been 5 players to play all 9 positions in a game. Bert Campaneris in 1965, Cesar Tovar in 1968, Scott Sheldon in 2000, Shane Halter in 2000, and Austin Romine in 2017.
