The Missouri Baseball League 1886

In the spring of 2019 a few of us put together the foundation for an immersive writing league that began in 1890. We worked on it a number of months with huge contributions from Andrew, Brendan, Snowman, and a few others (sorry I don't remember all the names). The league, to this date, has not launched.

A constitution was drafted, many back story lines were created with history and authenticity in mind, and as an outcome of these stories there were a number of semi pro/pick up type leagues that were created. They were to be the source of the 'feeder players' for the new MLB that was beginning to form, the previous having folded.

I worked on the Missouri League, and Brendan supplied me with the logo's. Rather than see all this historical effort sit idle, I thought I would energize the Missouri Baseball League of 8 teams and let it evolve making it's own history independent of any other leagues. It is but a small part of the original project but intent on celebrating the very early days of American baseball.

The concept is to keep the teams at 8, have minimal rosters, trades, and injuries while getting to know all the players that are part of the league. With active rosters of between 12 and 18 (undecided) there will be opportunity to know each one. I will probably pare back the reserve roster to something less than 10.

All of the teams are actual companies of that time. Owners will be individuals that are linked to the companies, although their names may be fictitious. Below are the teams of the 8 that comprise the Missouri Baseball League, 1886. Team uniforms will be posted in the near future. Beyond the above, I am open to the direction the league takes.

John Deere Tractors

John Deere is the owner of the Tractors. One of the anticipated stars is their third baseman who many think will be the best in the Missouri League.

Johnson Boot Co. Cobblers

George Johnson is the owner of Johnson Boot Co. and their baseball club.

In Max Foley, the Cobblers figure to have one of the best, if not the best, Starting Pitching in the league.

Gold Medal Grainery

Cadwallader Washburn has held public office in the House of Representatives for the state of Wisconsin. He has served as a colonel of the volunteer Wisconsin Cavalry before developing his fortune in the milling business.
One of the most anticipated players on the Grainery ball team is their 26 year old center fielder, Carlos Campos. Washburn has declared him a franchise player.

Missouri Tribune

Charles Strong, who has thrived in the Graphic Arts and Newspaper business, is the owner of the Tribune team. Needless to say, we anticipate the Graphic Artists to be treated 'favorably' in the press.

Tommy French was signed for one reason. Hit the daylights out of the ball. In practice games he has lived up to the hype.

Good Earth Flour Mill

Brian Peterson took his love of the land and parlayed it into a profitable grainery and baking enterprise.

The team lacks any sure thing young stars but it is banking on the veteran talent and leadership that they anticipate will come from 34 year old Ronan Dougherty from Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Armour & Company Cattlemen

Philip Armour headed west from Stockbridge, Ma. while still a teenager and took on jobs on various cattle ranch's. He worked hard at his craft and eventually broke out on his own to form the Armour Co.

Word around the Armour baseball facility is that Mark Miller has so much movement on his pitches that most batters simply can't make contact, or beat the ball into the ground for an easy putout. Miller figures to be big for the Cattlemen.

Anheuser-Busch Brewmeisters

Well, there are two owners of the brewery business but it's Adolphus Busch who will tend to the baseball component of the enterprise. From Germany, he is the only foreign born owner in the Missouri Baseball League.

With a last name as long as his, don't be surprised if the baseball world refers to Danny as, 'D.J.' The plan is for him to hold down second base.

Bootheel Loggers

Chadsworth Thoreau is the owner of the Loggers.

26 year old Eddie Harden is a tireless worker on the ball club who will add serious offense to the Logger attack. He has a pretty decent glove as a first baseman.

Missouri Baseball League OOTP 21

The league has begun play in OOTP 21. Currently, I am not managing a team. For now, using various camera angles, I observe the action. Lots of hits, errors, and runs, so far.

Cobblers take over first place

The Johnson Boot Company Cobblers soared to a 6-0 lead only to surrender 7 unanswered runs over the next three innings. The powerful hitting Cobblers then reverted to the mentality of the early part of the game as they posted their own 7 run burst over the final 3 innings to take over first place from the Loggers, despite committing 6 miscues, doubling the total of the Bootheel squad.

But, that appears to be the game in the waning years of the 19th century. Lots of errors, plenty of running, and less reliance on the big hit in the form of a round tripper. In 36 AB's the Cobblers walked 6 times and struck out just once. On the reverse, the Loggers walked once and K'd 6.

Mike Park earned POG honors.
