This is a tough one .. i would personally chose the player on the right .. he had 331 Ks, walked less batters, opponents hit for a lower AVG against him, and he allowed less hits on more innings pitched ... the pitcher on the left had a lower ERA and less earned runs, but i still wouldnt have given him the award ..

1/2 the home runs... if ~1.2 or so is baseline, i guess i'd stick with the guy on the right... otherise if he's more than a bit over average HR/9 i don't think that ERA difference is as minor as most contexts relating to ERA. just because it's not as stongly correlated overall doesn't mean it can't be extremely relevant for any 1 context.

i think it's quite close, actually. they guy lets up 2x the home runs. that's why his ERA is 50% higher, lol. you can talk abou K/9 all you want... a few less strikeouts vs .5hr/9 is an easy trade to make, clearly.

even thought it wouldn't matter for a cy young, i'd be curious about htose 2 careers. i'd love to see the guy on the left be more consistent and a better career in general.. my money is on it anyway.

I value ERA and innings more than strikeouts (though K's do matter), so that said I'm going with the guy on the left.

That is a tough one but I would probably take the left one. A 2.09 ERA is nothing to spit at.

Although Gaylord Perry had a 1.92 ERA in 1972, which is awfully close to 2.09, so, you know, maybe it is something to spit at.

Tough one, especially once you get to WHIP and all the categories listed below that. Still, that full one run more in the ERA - I'd have to go with guy on left as well.

Apparently we don't show it on there (yet...), but looks like the guy on the left has around a 2.88 FIP, and the guy on the right would be at like 2.45.

It's the tough call. To me, while the guy on the right was a better pitcher over the season due to K, he probably got tougher luck in runs allowed. As runs allowed are the real driving factor in games, when the split is that wide, I have to give it to the guy on the left. How did the actual voting break down? Was it close between them?

Colorado vs Florida methinks. A 3.19 ERA in Colorado is ridiculously good as is a 2.09 ERA in Miami. The Colorado guy is bound to give up way more HR than the guy in spacious Marlins Park, but he did manage to hold it under 1.0 HR/9.

He also has that ridiculous K/BB rate of just over 7.0, which calls to mind 2004 Randy Johnson. Incredibly, RL Pedro Martinez had better K/BB rates in his otherworldly 1999 and 2000 seasons. It is a ridiculously close race to me. One thing I'm not understanding is the vast gap in ERA+. Surely a 3.19 ERA in Coors Field is worth more than 146, and the 2.09 ERA in Marlins Park should be lower than 212. What are the park factors like?

I'm leaning towards the guy on the right, but I'm not sure there is a wrong answer here. Both had insanely great seasons. Gun to my head: Guy on the right.
