It's Nice going to the post-season

The extra game was as close as it could be. Both teams putting forth solid efforts with neither committing any errors.

The box score doesn't do enough by itself to describe the drama.

So, with 75 wins, their most ever, they will play the first round games in France with Paris having the home field advantage.

The Artists won 8 of 12 in the regular season.

I first saw the headline and thought, well, yes, it is nice going to the post-season.
And then I looked more closely and realized that it was Nice (the team from the French city of that name) going to the playoffs. Which I guess is nice for them.

Writers intent for the dual meaning on that one.

Amazing turnaround at the end. I'm curious if Paris can keep their mojo going with a team this hot. Poor Le Morne Rouge, their fans have been waiting so long only to see the epic collapse the final 10 games. Maybe next year for those Toucans.

Round 1, Game 1

The Orchids refuse to cool down as they handed Julien Henri the L in the series opener. It was Nicolas Fontaine, the 23 year old RHP from Sainte Phillipe, Martinique, who stole the show with his 6 innings of one run ball.

Fontaine, with a 5.49 ERA in 41 IP during the regular season, used 5 different pitches to befuddle the potent Artist attach allowing just 4 hits.

In Le Diamant, it was the Expedition who won on the road as they scored 4 late runs to rally for a 6-3 win. Xavier Rolland went deep for Ottawa.

Round 1, Game 2

The top of the Paris line up went 7 for 12 and Lamy blasted two solo homers paving the way for a relatively easy Artist win in the second game of the series. Seldom used SS Franck Marie also had a solo homer for Paris.

Sam Smith didn't have his best stuff but we he did have going for him was a lights out bullpen that didn't allow baserunners over the final 3.2 innings.

In Le Diamant, it was the Expedition that scored four first inning runs off 17 game winner Guillame Andrieu on their way to a 6-4 win. Fifteen game winner Sebastian Vautier notched the win for Ottawa.

Game 3 will be played in Canada as the Expedition hope they can close it out at home.

The Paris/Nice series stays in France but will be played in Nice.

Jonathan Allain hangs em up

He started his career with the Royals and he finished it with Montreal. Jon Allain announced his retirement from the FBL this week.

Many believe his finest moments of his career came in 1963 when he started and won all three of his games in the post season leading Montreal to their only title.

Game 3

It's looking more and more like the Orchids just might prevail in the first round. Nice made the most of their opportunities at home and breezed to an easy W in spite of being out hit for the game, 12 to 10.

In Ottawa, the Expedition won a close one 4-3 to go up 3-0 in that series. They were out hit 10 to 7 but Chauvin steadied himself when he needed it and went the distance with a 127 pitch count. The Expedition stranded just one runner while the Diamonds left 7 on base. Vincent Chene is hitting .455 for Ottawa.

Bad Timing for Le Diamant

What a time to lose your ace, just before the start of the post season. It's official, Vic Cosman is done for the year.

Game 4

The Paris bats didn't have their usual hitters leading the way as Michel and Mercier combined to go 0 for 10. The team opted to start Juhan in the OF, putting Henri on the bench.

In the 10th inning it was 0 for 4 Herve Delage who drilled one into the seats in left centerfield for a 3-2 lead. Thomas Dupin worked a scoreless 10th as he posted up 2 innings of shutout ball earning the win.

The series is tied at 2 games each.

In the Expedition/Diamond series Ottawa made short order of Le Diamant as they swept them right out of the playoffs with a 4-1 win. 36 year old William Mangin, who went 7-13 on the season, pitched a CG game allowing the Diamonds just 4 hits and 1 walk. He fanned just one.

Game 5

The Paris Artists won their second straight road contest in Nice as they turned the series in their favor as the two clubs head back to the city of lights for game 6.

Paris exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 7th to break open a close game. The ability of the bottom part of the order to be productive (3 rbi's) was key to the Artist win. Henri, POG, had an rbi single and Juhan had a huge 2 out double in the 4th to put the Artists up for good.

Game 6

The series is going the distance. The Nice Orchids entered Arc de Triumph ballpark and took control early. The bats were big, as were the timeliness of the hits.

Some Key points to the game/series:

Paris SP Sam Smith was battered for the second time in the series. He walked two, yielded 8 hits, and allowed 5 runs to score without finishing the 4th inning.

Mathieu Michel, LF, has been untypically cold. He's batting .276 but his slash line is .276/.300/.379.

Julien Henri is hitting .421.

Herve Delage has 5 hits the last 3 games but is still batting only .217. Look for Julien to move up a slot in the order and for Herve to hit behind him.

Fares Haas, 1B for the Orchids, is hitting .423/.500/.577.

SP Herve Villiard will likely start for Nice in Game 7. He has won his last 5 starts for the Orchids.

SP Denis Merlin was roughed up seriously by Nice in his other start but will get the nod in spite of that. He has won 3 of his last 4 games.

Game 7

One inning. One inning where a ground ball and a toss to first were misplayed. That was all that separated the Nice Orchids from giving themselves a chance to compete for FBL Championship.

Instead, it will be the Paris Artists on their way to finals to take on the Ottawa Expedition and Xavier Rolland. Julien Henri is coming off a series that he batted .435.

Paris, France will host the first two games of the final series. For the season the Expedition handled the Artists 8 of 12 times.

Game 1 - Championship Series

As lopsided as the score indicates, it could have been worse. The Paris Artists had beaucoup opportunities early in the game to blow it open but seem to come up short on each occasion. Conversely, the third inning that saw the Expedition with their only lead (3-2) came at the expense of having 2 outs.

Other than clutch hitting in the early part of the game, Ottawa had little going for them. Poor starting pitching, poor relief efforts, miscues in the field, and a lack of offense doomed the Ottawa club to a humiliating beginning to the series.

Baseball aficionados know that losing a game by one run or 10 doesn't always carry through to the next contest. Ottawa did not get where they are by being steamrolled by the opposition.

Meanwhile, Player of the Game Julien Henri was dominating on the mound and devastating in the batters box. Allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, and fanning 8 made it possible for Julien to go the distance. His 3 timely singles accounted for 3 RBI's leading the Artists in that department.

Bob Juhan had 4 hits for Paris and Michel seem to break out of his mini slump with 3 hits. Herve, hitting just .161, went hit less.

Game 2 Championship Series

The second home game in Paris bore a remarkable resemblance to the first one. The Artists struck in the first inning and were never challenged for the rest of the contest.

For the second day in a row Paris out hit, out pitched, and out fielded the Ottawa Expedition as they threaten to make this series a very short one.

Sebastian Vautier, ex Le Diamant and Paris SP, just didn't have his normally reliable stuff as he yielded 8 runs on 8 hits. Just 5 of those runs were earned as SS Raphael Girard committed 2 errors, the first to the lead off batter in the first inning.

The balanced Artist attack featured hits by every starter except lead off hitter Matthieu Michel. Julien Henri was the only Artist to collect 2 hits. On a side note the first 8 batters in the Artist line up each scored once.

But, Julien Carlier had a lot to say about how this game played out as he worked deep into the game (8th inning) and did not allow any runs. Carlier has only allowed 3 runs in the last 21 innings of playoff baseball.

The series will resume in Canada as the Expedition hope to find the formula that allowed them to best Paris 8 of 12 times during the regular season. They played 38-31 ball both at home and on the road during the regular season. The Artists are only 33-36 away from Paris so that might be the key for the Expedition as they work to get into this series before it's lights out.

Game 3 Championship Series

In the top of the first , Mathieu Michel took Corentin Chauvin's second pitch of the game and deposited into the right field seats. The collective groan from the Expedition faithful was understandable given the nature of the series to date.

With 2 out in the bottom of the first Douay singled. Xavier Rolland followed that up with a bee-bee to the left center field wall scoring Douay.

In the bottom of the 3rd, with one on and one out, SP Corentin Chauvin sent a 1-2 fast ball into the left field seats elevating the Expedition to a 3-1 lead. The crowd went nuts. Chauvin had an .821 OPS during the regular season so this was not unexpected on the part of the Ottawa fans.

With a new sense of hope the Expedition fans were dismayed when Roger Lamy hit a 3 run bomb in the sixth to put the Artists up by a run. Ottawa stuck with Chauvin and answered quickly in the bottom part of the inning when Tim Oulton reached the seats with a 421 ft. fly ball on the first pitch from Hubert Rivet. That made it 5-4 Expedition.

In the next inning Chene singled in one and Douay doubled in two more and Ottawa was on their way to a convincing 8-4 win to put some life in this series

Julien Henri went 1 for 4 and logged an outfield assist (3rd base) in the losing cause for Paris.

Game 4, Championship Series

A close one that saw the home team rally with 2 outs late in the contest. This one could have gone either way. The Artists had 2 on with 0 out in the top of the 9th when pinch hitter Juhan hit a screamer to the wall in center. Camille Lefevre tracked it down and Leroy retired the final 2 batters to record the save.

The series is now tied at 2 apiece.

Game 5 Championship Series

When the top five players in a line up each score a run AND they have their ace on the mound, the odds are pretty good that the team will notch a W. In the critical game 6, that's exactly how it played.

Julien Henri was efficient and in control throughout the contest limiting the Expedition to 7 hits and 0 walks. Lead off batter Camile Lefevre touched Henri for a single in the bottom of the first, then promptly stole second. He advanced on a ground out, then scored on a Douay SF. After that, the scoring opportunities were scarce for Ottawa.

When Juhan ripped a two out, two run double in the 8th the outcome was pretty much decided. The teams head back to Paris to resume play in the City of Lights.

Game 6 Championship Series

29 year old LHP Julien Carlier was brilliant in the CG win for Paris. He pitched 6.2 innings of no hit ball until Xavier Rolland broke it up with a base hit. But, Paris never trailed in this one as Julien Henri's triple in the 2nd inning set up the go ahead run.

Sebastian Vautier pitched a decent game allowing only 4 hits and 4 runs (3 earned), but the Expedition weakness in this series was their fielding. They committed 4 errors in this one and a total of 12 in the six game series.

For Julien Henri it was his 4th championship, same as Herve Delage. Mathieu Michel and Laurant Mercier, former Le Diamant team mates, each have 5.

Herve Rambaud

For the original owner of the Paris Artists, Herve Rambaud, this is his first championship. While not all the goals were meant financially, the Artists clearly over exceeded Rambaud's on the field performance expectations.

It is probably no coincidence that the Paris turnaround began in earnest when Julien Henri and Herve Delage arrived on the scene in 1969. Michel and Mercier were clearly the players that gave Paris the assets to win the most games in the Francais Baseball League as well as win the Championship.
