There is no difficulty level per se. However, you can make the game as hard or as easy for yourself as u want. Turn off or decrease its accuracy in scouting, so that u cant see accurate player ratings. You can make trading as easy or as hard as you want. As a general manager, do everything including playing out your games and keeping an eye on your minors, if you have them.
and im sure the other people on this GREAT forum will give some more ideas.

As RJL says, there are a number of ways to manipulate the settings to make the game challenging. Over the years I've turned off stars, reduced ratings from 1-100 to 2-8, set trading to "hard", scouting to "normal".....now all I need to do is finally adopt the recommendation of a number of the OOTP sages who say that "stats only" is the way to go.

I also refrain from picking up players off waivers as sometime the AI will waive a top prospect (at least it did in v12). And I couldn't sign Type A free agents (again, in the old CBA world), but I'll have to see how this goes in the new CBA. I haven't tried stats only yet but may do so in an upcoming season, or at least reduce the scouting ratings more (right now I use normal).
Bakersfield - I used to spend parts of my summers working in Bakersfield in the mid-80s. We caught a few Bakersfield Dodger games there. It was pretty warm there in the summer. |

Go 1-5 and you will see (or not see) a difference.

If you're playing in a world that somewhat resembles MLB, my favorite way to challenge myself is to run a team that has a bottom-five payroll. It basically forces you to build up your team through trades / player development... one bad long-term contract could cripple you... A few big free agent signings are possible, but it's not like you have the luxury of buying your way out of mistakes every single off-season.
I also set trades to "hard / favor prospects" and recently switched from 1-20 ratings to 1-10. P.S. I get fired a lot during my first couple season! But it's fun to start over... and even more fun when I actually succeed! |

I play stats only and can't ever see myself going back. I only use ratings when doing a draft, otherwise, I rely on the stats and the scouting report. A lot of guessing that occurs when you play this way, which is just how it goes in real life.
Maybe there are harder ways to play, I'm not sure, but this way is pretty hard if you like a challenge. |
