08/02/1986 - Twins Stymie Oakland, Take 4-1 Win

The Minnesota Twins picked up a win at Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome, knocking off the Oakland Athletics, 4-1. On the mound for Minnesota was left-hander Neal Heaton, who played a pivotal role in the win. In 8.2 innings, Heaton surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. Frank Pastore was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 13 of 14 save opportunities.

The Twins picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Heaton. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

The Twins bumped their record to 55-48 with this latest triumph.

08/06/1986 - Dominant Performance by Langston in Seattle Win

The Seattle Mariners got a magnificent effort from pitcher Mark Langston, who kept Oakland hitters in check en route to a 3-1 Mariners win at Kingdome. Seattle improves to 66-43 with the win. They lead their division by 3½ games.

Langston earned the win, going 8 strong innings for Seattle. The native of San Diego, California allowed just 3 hits, while striking out 9. Oakland hitters did next to nothing against the left-hander.

"I liked his command," said Seattle manager . "Mark was throwing strikes."

08/11/1986 - Athletics Deal Mariners Painful Loss

The Oakland Athletics did just enough to sneak past the Seattle Mariners, 6-5, at Oakland Coliseum. Oakland right fielder Mike Davis earned player of the game honors. Oakland reliever Jose Rijo picked up the win to move to 4-0. Mark Huismann suffered the loss. The Athletics bumped their record to 66-49 with this latest triumph.

Davis had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the 12th. On a first pitch splitter from Mark Huismann, he banged a solo home run to left, giving the Athletics a 6-5 lead. It was the 14th home run of the year for Davis.

"We'll savor this win," Davis told the Oakland Times, "then get ready for the next game."

08/17/1986 - Athletics Lose, 9-2, at Anaheim Stadium

Angels left fielder George Hendrick put his stamp on his team's 9-2 win over the Oakland Athletics. Hendrick went 3-3 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 runs for California in the contest. Ron Romanick converted his 1st save in 2 tries. California is now 54-64, Oakland 69-51.

Hendrick had no bigger at-bat than in the bottom of the second when the 36-year old left fielder hit a double. The double gave California the lead, 2-0. It was his 17th double of the season.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Hendrick.

08/19/1986 - Orioles Come Back Late to Clip Athletics

Baltimore and Oakland put this game in the books despite some rain.

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics, 7-6 at Memorial Stadium, in part due to right fielder Ken Gerhart, who nabbed player of the game honors. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winner was Baltimore reliever Nate Snell, now 7-0. The loser was Bill Krueger. Rich Bordi was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 22 of 29 save opportunities.

Gerhart had a game-changing double in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-1 fastball from Steve Ontiveros, he banged a run-scoring double to right-center, giving the Orioles a 7-6 lead. It was the 12th double of the year for Gerhart.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Gerhart said.

08/22/1986 - Canseco goes 3-for-4 as Athletics Squeeze Past New York

In a tight contest at Yankee Stadium II, the Oakland Athletics edged the New York Yankees by the score of 9-8. Oakland left fielder Jose Canseco, who blasted 1 home run, was named the player of the game. Steve Ontiveros converted his 32nd save in 38 tries. The Yankees have now dropped 5 straight.

It could have been a different outcome for Oakland, had it not been for Terry Steinbach, the 24-year old catcher . Steinbach contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the seventh inning to put Oakland up, 7-5.

"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," Canseco said in postgame remarks. "Soon enough, the finish line will be in sight."

A 4-RBI performance from left fielder Jose Canseco, who is on pace to hit 54 home runs this season, led the Oakland Athletics to a 13-4 win over the New York Yankees. The losing skid has reached 6 games for New York.

Dave Kingman, who won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1979, aided the Oakland cause with a 3-run home run in the top of the second. For the game, the first baseman was 1-4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.

"We played hard and won," said Canseco. "Sometimes, baseball really is that easy.'

Oakland first baseman Dave Kingman played a vital role in his team's 14-6 triumph over New York. He hit 2 home runs. He drove in 6 runs and scored twice for Oakland. The winner was Bill Krueger, who threw 123 pitches over 8 innings. The left-hander was charged with 3 runs on 7 hits. The slumping Yankees have dropped 7 in a row.

Kingman had a key at-bat for Oakland early in the game. With runners on 1st and 3rd, he hit a 3-run home run. It was his 27th home run of the season and gave Oakland an early 3-0 lead.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Kingman told the Oakland Times.

With designated hitter Chet Lemon leading the charge, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics, 9-4, at Tiger Stadium. Lemon, who is tied for 8th in the AL in triples with 6, went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Frank Tanana got the win, improving to 9-12. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 1. Even with the win, the Tigers have a dismal 42-84 record.

Lemon had a big at-bat with a runner on 1st in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he hit a 2-run home run. The Tigers went on to win.

"We maximized our offense today," said Detroit skipper . "That makes everyone's life easier."

The Oakland Athletics topped the Detroit Tigers by the score of 12-4, with the biggest share of the credit going to designated hitter Dave Kingman. Kingman belted 3 home runs. He drove in 6 runs and scored three times for the Athletics on the day. The Athletics bumped their record to 75-53 with this latest triumph.

Donnie Hill chipped in for Oakland with a grand slam home run in the top of the eighth. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 5 runs batted in.

08/28/1986 - Orioles Drop Athletics with Late Score

Benefiting from Larry Sheets's productive game, the Baltimore Orioles downed the Oakland Athletics, 8-7. Sheets went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Orioles. Baltimore reliever Bill Swaggerty picked up the win, bumping his record to 3-2. Steve Ontiveros was collared with the loss. Rich Bordi converted his 25th save in 32 tries.

Sheets had a game-changing home run in the top of the ninth. On a 2-0 fastball from Steve Ontiveros, he banged a 2-run home run to right, giving the Orioles a 8-7 lead. It was the 24th home run of the year for Sheets.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Sheets told the Baltimore Daily News.

Baltimore now owns a record of 58-68.

The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics, 3-2, in AL action at Oakland Coliseum, with New York pitcher John Montefusco named player of the game. The Yankees' win now puts them at 64-67.

The Yankees got a big at-bat from third baseman Mike Pagliarulo. For the game, Pagliarulo went 2-3 with 2 singles and 2 walks. In the top of the ninth, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 131st hit of the season gave New York a 3-2 lead.

"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Pagliarulo said.

Oakland left-hander Bill Krueger pitched his team to a shutout win, 8-0, over the New York Yankees. The Athletics bumped their record to 78-57 with this latest triumph.

Krueger's performance can only be described as masterful. He notched 4 strikeouts in 8.1 innings while allowing 4 hits. Krueger, who is tied for 5th in the AL with a 20 quality starts, goes to 14-11 on the year with 122 strikeouts.

"I had pretty good command out there," said Krueger.

The Detroit Tigers got a superb performance from pitcher Dan Petry. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Oakland. The Athletics won the game, 5-3. In spite of the loss, Petry was named the player of the game. He threw 6 innings allowing 3 runs. The third-place Athletics have won 4 in a row.

The Athletics got a big at-bat from right fielder Mike Davis. For the game, Davis was 1-4 with a double. He drove in 3 runs. In the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run double. His 32nd double of the season gave Oakland a 4-3 lead.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Davis told the Oakland Times.

09/12/1986 - Indians Turn Back Oakland, 5-3

Cleveland and Oakland duked it out at Cleveland Stadium and the Indians came out victorious.

Cleveland right fielder Cory Snyder was instrumental in his team's 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics. Snyder, who is the 4th-best prospect in the Indians organization, went 1-4 with 1 run scored to lead the offensive attack for the Indians. Ernie Camacho was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 24 of 36 save opportunities.

Snyder contributed a big hit, a grand slam home run, for Cleveland in the bottom of the third. With his team trailing 2-1, Snyder took a fastball from Curt Young and stroked the home run to left. His 2nd home run of the season allowed the Indians to leap in front, 5-2.

"It was a solid team effort," said Snyder after the game.

The Oakland Athletics bested the Texas Rangers by a score of 7-6, with third baseman Wayne Gross getting the main credit. On the day, Gross hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice for the Athletics. The Athletics bumped their record to 86-60 with this latest triumph.

Mike Davis was the walk-off hero for Oakland. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Athletics right fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.

"It wasn't a pretty victory," said Davis, "but we got it done."

Getting an impressive start from Bill Krueger, Oakland beat Chicago by the score of 3-2. The Athletics have now won 5 straight.

A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 3rd and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when left fielder Jose Canseco, who is on pace for 154 RBI this season, drew a walk. The Athletics went on to win.

"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said Oakland skipper . "I can't complain."

"I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."

That's what Dave Kingman told reporters after he made baseball history today at Royals Stadium. The prolific slugger belted home run #600 in the Oakland Athletics 9-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

The standout first baseman collected 1 hit in 3 at-bats with 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Kingman. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

In 2404 games Kingman has a career .242 batting average and a .320 on-base percentage. He has hit 600 home runs with 1653 RBIs and 1343 runs scored.
