Week 21 News and Notes from the Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League (1901-19

http://www.tuatarasoftware.com/Hardb..._100_home.html

Dale Mitchell of the Indians relied on a sharp eye and a quick bat to outpace all other American League hitters last week and collect the Player of the Week Award. He hit .615 with 8 hits in 13 at-bats, 1 home run and 5 RBIs following his recall from the Boxborough Tumbleweeds.

Harry Danning stepped up to the plate in a big way last week and today he took home the National League Player of the Week honors. The New York catcher ripped opposing pitchers for 11 hits in 21 at-bats and 3 home runs. He put together a sizzling .524 batting average as he knocked in 13 runs and scored 7 times. This season Danning is batting .254 with 103 hits and 7 home runs. He has scored 35 times and has 51 RBI.

The Batter of the Month honoree for August in the American League is Washington Senators left fielder Tillie Walker. He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .286 batting average, 11 home runs, 31 RBIs, and 23 runs scored. So far this year Walker has 24 home runs and a .288 batting average.

It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 25, Heinie Zimmerman has a lot of baseball ahead of him. But for now the young Chicago Cubs star can enjoy the numbers he put upin August, which have garnered him the nod as the National League Batter of the Month. His breakout month featured a .374 average with 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and 25 runs scored. Zimmerman on the season is batting .346 with 20 home runs. His totals include 49 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He has played in 76 games.

The American League announced today that Larry Jansen has been chosen the league's Pitcher of the Month. The Boston starter had everything working for him last month as he glided to a 6-1 record. In August Jansen chalked up a 1.78 ERA in 50.2 innings with 26 strikeouts and 7 walks. This season-to-date Jansen has 16 wins and 9 losses and a 2.83 ERA.

In August, Pete Donohue tore through the National League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old. The young Cincinnati starter posted a 6-1 mark and an ERA of 1.72 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 57.2 innings he collected 17 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .215 average. Checking out his stats for the season, Donohue has registered 8 wins and 4 losses in 12 starts, 2.23 ERA and struck out 44 batters in 137.1 innings.

In the current season, Medwick has put up a .263 batting average with 134 hits, 18 home runs, 83 runs batted in and scored 64 runs.

Pitchers who faced the St. Louis Browns last week were happy to see Roy "Squirrel" Sievers in the rear view mirror. Week 23 News and Notes from the Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League (1901-19

http://www.tuatarasoftware.com/Hardb..._100_home.html

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Phillies and the Cardinals are battling down to the wire. The Indians hold a commanding 8.5 game lead over the Red Sox and appear poised to clinch the American League pennant.

At the age of 26, Home Run Baker might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Philadelphia third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .476 batting average. For his efforts Baker collected the American League Player of the Week Award. He racked up 10 hits in 21 at-bats, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs last week in 6 games. So far this year Baker is batting .283 with 21 home runs, 73 RBIs and 60 runs scored.

Cliff Melton is capable of a great game every time he takes the hill and last week the New York Giants hurler proved that point with gusto to become the newest National League Player of the Week.
"Mountain Music" picked up 3 wins and 1 loss and rang up 6 strikeouts in 9 innings to finish with a splendid 3.00 ERA. To date Melton is 11-5 in 75 appearances with a 1.77 ERA and has 101 strikeouts in 122.1 innings.

Fans of the Cleveland Indians have a lot to get excited about, as the club has captured the American League crown. For his part, starting pitcher Mike Garcia said the division championship is "just a start" for his team. "We want to go all the way, win the World Series," he said. *** END REGULAR SEASON ***

The Philadelphia Phillies are champions of the National League, but don't plan the parade quite yet. "It's a nice accomplishment, but we haven't done anything until we win the World Series," said starting pitcher Pete Alexander. "We're going to celebrate this for sure, but the real celebration is still to come for fans in Philadelphia."

The award-winners for the batter and pitcher of the month were announced today.

Mickey Mantle nabbed September's American League Batter of the Month honors. The New York center fielder put together a .301 batting average with 12 home runs, 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
Mantle supplied a .291 BA with 40 home runs and 92 RBI this season.

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old "Turkey" Mike Donlin put together a solid offensive month for St. Louis and was crowned September's top batter in the National League. He batted .347 with 5 home runs, 14 RBIs and 26 runs scored. On the year Donlin hit .316 with 21 home runs, 64 RBIs and 97 runs scored.

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Carl Hubbell still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in September. The 33-year-old starter for Detroit was named American League Pitcher of the Month earlier today. "Meal Ticket" collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 23 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.52 ERA in 47.1 innings of work. Hubbell delivered a record of 21-14 with 121 strikeouts and 67 walks in 284.2 innings and a 3.00 ERA.

Ewell Blackwell has made fans throughout Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-1 record. No pitcher in the National League threw better in September, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 6 starts "The Whip" compiled a 2.98 ERA, putting up a 5-1 record, striking out 45 and tossing 45.1 innings. This year Blackwell compiled a 14-13 mark with a 3.49 ERA in 36 starts.

Game 1 of Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League - World Series

One game in and the World Series is already looking exhausting.

The Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies needed 13 innings to settle Game 1, with the Indians finally taking the 4-3 victory at Shibe Park. Earning player of the game honors in the win was Cleveland starting pitcher Bob Feller, who threw 9 innings of 4-hit ball. The Indians and Phillies will play a best-of-7 series.

"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said Cleveland skipper Derek Bain. "I can't complain."

Avila, Indians Sink Phillies Again in Game 3

http://www.tuatarasoftware.com/Hardb..._box_2618.html

Game 3 of Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League - World Series

The Cleveland Indians are one game away from a sweep after a 12-7 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies at Cleveland Stadium today. Indians second baseman Bobby Avila was named player of the game, as he was 1-2 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 3 times. Cleveland now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series.

A crucial at-bat came with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when third baseman Al Rosen, who won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1953, hit a 2-run single. The Indians went on to win as Rosen and Larry Doby knocked in 3 runs each.

Game 4 is set to be played on Sunday, October 9th, 1960 at Cleveland Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Harry Coveleski for the Phillies and Wes Ferrell for the Indians.

World Series Sweep for Cleveland

http://www.tuatarasoftware.com/Hardb..._box_2619.html

Game 4 of Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League - World Series

Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1960, as the Cleveland Indians topped the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 tonight at Cleveland Stadium to win the World Series. Wes Ferrell scattered 8 hits and allowed only one run to over 9 innings to secure the victory.

"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Cleveland catcher Sherm Lollar, who was named series MVP.

The Indians took the series 4-0. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the American and a 88-66 record.

Cleveland third baseman Al Rosen grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Lollar's words.

"Sherm said it best -- we played better than the other team," he said.

Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.
