How do the historical seasons work?

What I am wondering. Lets say I started a season with say 1985. When the season is over would and I move to 1986 do all the players who first came into baseball in 1986 show up and on the correct teams? Like if I started a Mets franchise in 1985 would eventually when I got to the year the Mets got Matt Harvey in the draft him just show up on the Mets?

In order to get what you're looking for, three boxes need to be checked (or unchecked as the case may be). First go to the Game Settings > League Settings > Rules > Amateur Draft Settings page and uncheck the box that says "Enable Amateur Draft (Can only be changed during the preseason)". Next go to the Game Settings > League Settings > Historical > Historical Rookies Settings page and make sure to check the box that says "Automatically import historical rookies", and uncheck the box that says "Use random rookies from all eras". By doing this you're telling the game that you want historical rookies to populate the game in the years they came into the league, on the teams they came to the majors with, which (I think) is what you're trying to do. Also (Captain Obvious says) make sure you're playing a historical game in the first place by setting it up that way. I think that should work.

Had one more question for you. Or maybe two lol

Is there a way to do any of the following....

1- Create a league where I pull teams from all different eras like the 1986 mets, 1999 Yankees etc into one league?

2- Can I create a league and pull all the players from all the eras into one league as I see fit and each year add real players and create like my own thing from complete scratch?

I believe you can do #1, but I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to do it, as I've never done so. Someone else will have to help you there.

Not sure about how to do #2 either. I do know you can do random debut because it's the only way I play, but it sounds like you're looking for some control over who comes into your league, and that I wouldn't know how to do because I just take whoever shows up in the original pool plus the subsequent amateur drafts. I take Joe Schmoes as well as all-time greats. You wouldn't want all all-time greats because that could mess with the balance of your league. At least I think that's the case.

What do you mean by random debut, how does it work and how do you set it?

Random debut randomizes which players from the database come into the game when. So you could randomly get Joe Schmoes alongside Babe Ruth and other stars from all eras. You can even control what eras the players can come from using that box I told you about above. Go back and check the box that says "Use random rookies from all eras". Just below that box is "Select minimum & maximum years" with two rectangular slots beside it. I have mine set to allow all players (no minimum, no maximum), but you could control what your earliest and latest cutoff years will be using this feature.

Not sure if you could get them to the team they started playing for as I just use the draft. Pretty neat way to play though.

Or to paraphrase Forrest Gump: "The draft is like a bawx o' chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

Oh yeah, it's a blast. When playing random debut the day the draft class is announced is just like Christmas. The great thing is, OOTP creates a realistic draft class each year, so you get in my opinion the right number of studs, worker bees and scrubs. I was really worried when I first heard about random debut that the game would flood leagues with great players, but Markus worked his magic and my worries were unfounded.

I think it's because it truly is random. Probably some years there's more studs, some I've seen none at all. It fluctuates really, but that's kind of the way baseball goes too. Sometimes the greats come in waves. Like now IRL for example. Sometimes there's not much to go around. Baseball.

For 1. Go to a fictional league but then click "switch to historical teams" and you can import the 98 Yankees, 86 Mets or any other you want there.
