Bear,

I should have known not to question your omnipotent knowledge. Henry Cimoli is indeed a LW. On page 20 of Chance he’s credited with fighting Willie Pep twice. On page 46 of Cold Service he’s credited with knocking Pep down once but never hitting him the rest of the fight. On page 43 of Widow’s Walk it acknowledges that Cimoli boxed as a LW and it showed in the scar tissue around his eyes and the way his nose had thickened. His T-shirt showed how muscular he still was.

Hal Fieberling also appeared in numerous films using this name and also the name Hal Baylor. I'll soon provide about a dozen tomato cans based on these. Prior to Kirkwood signing as Palooka in 1946 there was a 1934 film with Jimmy Durante as Knobby Walsh, Stu Erwin as Joe Palooka, and William Armstrong as Joe's dad Pete.

The picks are great. So is the info on the boxing comics from toonopedia.
Romano reported that there was a nation wide search for the person ro play Palooka. Kirkwood didn't enter, but won because his mom sent an entry in.

When I first was reading Spenser I made the same assumption about Cimoli being a feather. We tend to forget that in the Pep/Saddler era club fighters were still in their hayday. Guys fought often and at catchweights. Pep's loss, sandwiched in between two incredible undefeated streaks, was a catchweight affair with Sammy Angott. I've never seen film of Angott but envision him as a lightweight version of Ernie Terrell with the ever so crowd pleasing jab and grab style. (For younger audiances think of John Ruiz style in a lightweight body.)

fight manager and promoter Knobby Walsh (Leon Errol) trains Al Costa (Lou Nova) to fight for the heavyweight championship, but gangster Florini (Eduardo Ciannelli), with the help of his henchmen, Lefty (Joe Sawyer) and Curly (Russ Vincent), takes the budding champion away from him. Knobby begins the search for a new fighter by taking four fighters and handler Smoky (Sam McDaniel) on a tour of tank towns. He finds Joe Palooka (Joe Kirkwood), a natural boxer, in a small town. Anne Howe (Elyse Knox), a society girl passing through town, helps persuade the shy-and-gentle farm boy to sign a contract with Knobby. Joe wins a string of sensational matches and, while training for the championship match with the recently-crowned champion Costa, Anne invites him to a party where her snobby society friend Ronnie Brewster (Robert Kent) makes a fool of Joe. The latter's training suffers as a result of this and estrangements from Knobby and Anne, but he rebuffs the efforts of Florini to get him to throw the fight.
