In the 60's Major League baseball lowered the mounds because of the dominance of the pitchers --- Koufax, Gibson,
the strike zones were called differently (lower strikes) but the balls and bat "makeup" causes a lot of the issues with homeruns in today's game .... also they did not change baseballs as frequently in games .... would you think of a catcher scuffing the ball in today's game ?

So, you didn't bother to read the article I referenced.

here are a few looks at Pitching with a higher mound --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idaxs6bm6LM Sandy Koufax https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuXTm0KoFPA Bob Gibson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2wu...c5j39xCYW4jP_X Tom Seaver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z5NonsCk4k Whitey Ford Denny McLain 31-6 ERA 1.96 Ks 280 & Bob Gibson 22-9 ERA 1.12 Ks - in 1968 I would like to see the mounds raised -- seemed to be fewer elbow injuries there did seem to be more rotator injuries

I read the article. I frankly was surprised when you said there was no mention of expansion and read the whole thing to confirm it. Not that I didn't believe you but everyone is capable of over looking something.
My experiments were to show the DMB people that if they insisted on raising the overall talent level the best batters AND pitchers would have poorer performances while overall performance was about the same. I know no reason the same sort of thing in reverse wouldn't happen with an overall talent decrease. Meanwhile, you haven't answered the question of whether expansion helped hitting or pitching. The next question is why. |
