I agree that the pics add a nice touch to this dynasty thread.

Amazing how many wins some pitchers earned in a season, during the first decade or two of professional baseball.

Excellent work.
But if this is your first time simming a 19th century league you may want to be sure and make a backup every 5 years if not every year because theres probably going to be something you may not think of beforehand. Also if you are using the Lahman database keep in mind that i dont think you can use the recalculation function when you get to 1901. Personally i hope markus can add that feature to 19th century leagues or at least allow us to use it once we get to 1901.
Otherwise you are gonna have to edit players like ruth or have him import from 1919. Anyways good job. I gave up on 19th century unless the ability to use the recalculate ratings can be used for leagues started before 1901.

Yea, I'm always backing up my league because of that reason. Also, because the one time I had a league that I was really far in (years wise) and was paying close attention to every year and such. Well, it got corrupted because my power cut out one day and I hadn't made any backups so I was screwed. So, I learned my lesson, backup your league(s) periodically.

Also, I realize the thing about Ruth will import as a pitcher and I'll have to switch him into a position player. Or maybe, he will become the greatest home run hitting pitcher EVER! Who knows??

Very Short 1875 Preview

As the clubs gear up for the 1875 campaign, the only one missing will be the Baltimore Canaries as they couldn’t stay afloat financially. With one loss, they are six additions making the total number 13 clubs vying for the Association championship. They are the Keokuk (IA) Westerns, New Haven (CT) Elm City, Philadelphia Centennials, St. Louis Red Stockings, St. Louis Brown Stockings, and the Washington Nationals, a familiar team are back for a second go around.

EDIT: This season there is no team by team preview is because I was almost done and my power cut off and I hadn't saved at all, so I dont feel like doing all the teams again. No major free agent signings went down anyway.

End of April 1875 Standings

Most of the clubs in the west haven't started play yet. And look at this, an early surprise, the Boston Red Stockings are 5-0!

End of May 1875 Standings

Ok, now a serious question can be posed: Are the Red Stockings EVER going to lose a game? With a 24-0 start, they already have an 8 game lead in the Association.

NOTE: In real life, the Red Stockings actually started the 1875 season 26-0! That year, they went on to finish at 71-8, by far the most dominating team ever in a single season. But after this year, the Association collapses and the National League forms and most of the Boston stars got purchased by the White Stockings in real life.

FOLDED:
Philadelphia Centennials

The Centennials were off to a rocky start and just didn't have the finances to continue play, so as usual, their players are free to play wherever they want to.

Where the Centennials players signed:

Washington Nationals:
2B Ed Somerville, LF John Hatfield, LF Charlie Mason, RF Frank Buttery, 1B Bub McAtee, 1B Mike Campbell, SS Denny Mack, RF Tim McGinley, SS Ham Allen, 3B George Trenwith
Keokuk Westerns: 3B Bill Smiley, 2B John Smith, 3B Ed Pinkham, C Sam Field
STL Brown Stockings: SS Wally Goldsmith, 1B John Abadie, C Doug Allison
Hartford Dark Blues: CF Fred Warner, SS John Bass

End of June 1875 Standings

FOLDED: Philadelphia Centennials (5/24), Keokuk Westerns (6/14)

The Westerns from Keokuk, Iowa just couldn't afford the journeys to the eastern team's ballparks so as a result, their players can sign anyway they want to.

Where the Westerns players signed:

STL Red Stockings: C John Sheppard, 2B John Smith, LF Charley Jones, SP Mike Golden, LF Jim Tipper, RF Herm Doscher, 1B Charlie Smith, 3B Ed Pinkham, SS John Radcliff,
New Haven Elm City: 1B Alexander Nevin, 2B Pony Sager, 2B Marty Simpson, 2B Jack Manning
STL Brown Stockings: 3B Bill Smiley, LF Josh Snyder, 2B Harry Bethrong, 1B Joe Start, RF Billy Riley
Washington Nationals: RF Joe Eland
Chicago White Stockings: CF Frank McCarton

Both the Nationals and Red Stockings have decided to fold their respective teams for financial reasons. It's also quite odd that both teams fold right after they played each other only hours earlier.

The Boston Red Stockings win another Association championship, that makes five in a row!! As the team was celebrating a couple of days later, a big announcement was about to be made that would affect the state of the Red Stockings franchise and the whole National Association.

More details on the new league and scandal

Of the 13 teams that suited up for the 1875 campaign and just 6 finished, raising questions about the league's stability. With all the ups and downs of the first 5 years of the National Association, everyone thought it would be best to form a new more financially stable league, the "National League". With the new league's formation, the six remaining teams from the 1875 NA season will form it along with 2 new teams, the Cincinnati Reds & Louisville Grays.

Now, on to the more serious issue, the gambling scandal that involves Boston players Al Spalding, Ross Barnes, Cal McVey, and Lip Pike. As a penalty, the team will be required to release all 4 players and allow them to sign elsewhere. As for the individuals, it doesn't look like anything is going to be done against them.

Great thread. I always like reading about leagues that start at the actual beginning of professional baseball.

-Spalding signs with White Stockings
-Barnes signs with Reds
-McVey signs with Grays
-Pike signs with Brown Stockings

Just days after the Red Stockings were required to release their top 4 star players, they have all signed on to play elsewhere for the upcoming 1876 season.
