My first, and I had to take the '62 Mets

The first test game as the '62 Mets. Set it up in Commissioner Mode and clicked the "cannot be fired" box. The point is to turn the worst team in modern-era history and win the world series before they did historically. It'll be a heck of a challenge. Right now I'm at the end of May 1962 and I\m sitting in last place at 12-34. I also checked Financials and Reserve Clause even though I don't really understand either system.

Right now Don Zimmer wants to be traded, I am being hit by injuries galore, and I'm trying to avoid current-season myopia and prepare myself mentally for the upcoming draft -- hoping i can get a couple of budding superstars and keep them happy long enough to substantially improve my team.

The only major alteration to my roster is acquiring Vic Wertz -- if mentoring the young guys is a thing it might actually have been a good move.

I need to come up with a better plan if I\m going to achieve my goals.

First, ignore Don Zimmer. Whenever you lose players complain. If you want you can shut off the player emotional settings whatever they are called, but if you want those, then just ignore players you don't want to trade. Your idea is a fun one - I have done it myself, I think I managed a pennant by 1970 - so, um, did not succeed. But you can. Yes, plan strategy for the draft. The 62 Mets had a few ok players - some pitching, Richie Ashburn, Hickman maybe, can't recall exactly, Christopher I think has one good year. Think about which of those you want to use for their one or two good seasons and which you might want to use as trade bait to get some younger players that have futures, trading a decent veteran to a "Win Now" contender for youth.

As someone who actually watched the '62 Mets, I can assure you there is no one with long-term value on your roster. Here's an interesting look at some of the players taken in the first expansion drafts:

Scenes From The Expansion Drafts ? The Hardball Times

The key point is that the Angels managed to get the few real prospects the year before the Mets and Colt .45s arrived. The article mentions Fregosi, Buck Rodgers and Dean Chance. No one like that was around for the Mets to pick.

Instead they had to make 'premium picks' such as Don Zimmer, players on their last legs.

So you need to churn your roster, growing progressively younger and then hope, like the real-life Mets, you pull Tom Seaver out of a hat.

Being a Mets fan from the late 60s this is one of the challenges I try with most versions of OOTP. I find it easy enough to build a team if there's a draft since I will be getting some of the best players of the late 60s in the next 2-3 drafts. Then I trade Ashburn and Thomas as soon as I can. The thing is I "know" more about some young players like Brock than the AI does.

What I also try is not having drafts but just have players enter with their real teams. Much less talent getting to the Mets for the first 3-4 years until the pitchers start showing up with Ryan, Seaver, Koosman.

Today is Marv Throneberry Day!

From BASEBALL HISTORY, June 17, 1962:

In a play that is emblematic of the struggling Mets, first baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first inning triple becomes an out on an appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to San Francisco at the Polo Grounds. When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call he is told by the umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing Casey, he missed first base, too."
