Meh. Does he wear it like that while playing? Or just casually? If just casually, I'm on board with him. If during the game, then I might support the Braves. But it's not a hill I would be injured on let alone die on.

This should be something for teams with no real problems to make a fuss about.
The Braves however...

The Braves always respect the game. I mean, they did fudge international prospect signing fees to get this kid in the first place!

I needed a place to stick this story - it has nothing to do with the Yankees - so maybe I could borrow this thread? Steer it away from crooked hats, perhaps? That topic seems to have run its course.
The other day, there was an exhibition game of the Red Sox versus the Cardinals. On the Red Sox spring training roster right now is a guy named Tate Matheny. He's a young outfielder; the Sox have plenty right now; and he's probably going to start the season in Double-A ball. The other thing about Tate Matheny is that he is the son of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Red Sox manager Alex Cora asked Tate to handle the pregame lineup card exchange, affording Tate the opportunity to greet his father at home plate. Tate then started the game and played all nine innings, coming to bat five times. “I wanted his dad to see him leading off and get as many at bats as possible,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “I know during the season, no way he’s going to be able to see him, so I think this is a good way to at least see him get four at-bats and perform.” Mike Matheny appreciated the gift. “That’s just first class,” he said. “Can’t even put it into words." God, do I need stories like this these days. I'm a Yankees fan but after that I will be rooting like heck for Alex Cora.

Who knew there were so many cap askew stories? Still, the thread title appeals to me: "Sigh...baseball" (ellipses truncated). If there is anything else that I come across that makes me sigh over baseball, I'm bringing it here.

When players & people wear their caps sideways or such they always remind me of Norman Wisdom, his excuse he was doing it to make people laugh wonder what other people’s excuses are

Do we know what the bill of a hat is for? To block the sun. If there is a dress code saying you have to wear your hat perfectly forward then those teams are screwing their players.
If im in right and the sun is hanging low over 1st base side...i might tilt my hat to block it. If im just having fun at an all star game like the ken griffey pic...i might wear it backwards. If i just got done with a long game on a hot day...it might barely hang on my head. I get there are tools in society that wear their hat stupid just to "be cool" but i have not seen anything from a major league athlete that is that big of a deal. |

When kids want to be cool that bad, you generally just have to give them time to grow up. If wearing a hat crooked is the way they choose to be cool, be grateful (and make sure) that they didn't pick more destructive ways.

The only time I'd accept a player skewing his hat is if it wasn't a fashion statement, e.g. Abe Alvarez who was blind in one eye.

I usually don't have any problem with baseball's "unwritten rules," but I saw that the Twins weren't happy with Sisco bunting in that situation and said to myself "that has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
First of all, the Orioles were down by seven runs. They needed baserunners, and Sisco's job, in that situation, was to get on base. Would the Twins have been upset if Sisco had drawn a walk? Secondly, if the Twins thought the game was all-but-over, why did they put the shift on? It's OK for them to use the shift to keep Sisco from getting on base, but somehow it's unfair of Sisco to take advantage of the shift? Thirdly, Sisco bunted to the unoccupied position at third base. Isn't that the implicit trade-off of the shift? You overload one side of the infield to minimize the batter's strengths, and in exchange you give him pretty much a free base hit to the other side. Putting on the shift means giving away a single in exchange for stopping an extra-base hit. So, in this case, the shift worked. Sisco got a single instead of a double. Why would the Twins complain? |

Baseball in America is the cause of this stupid "unwritten rule" garbage.
Remember the comments Adam Jones made during last year's WBC? He (and others on Team USA) were upset with how the team from Puerto Rico was already talking about their championship celebrations before the finals were even played. Source for those who don't remember: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/b...323-story.html. And what about Ian Kinsler talking about the way other teams celebrated during the games when scoring, hitting HRs, etc.? And, there's a huge double standard in the game. If a hitter crushes a bomb and does a bat flip, he gets a target on his back (or head). But if a pitcher strikes out a guy in a big situation and pumps his fist while grunting loudly, it is considered "intensity". Such stupid garbage... Sorry for the rant, but the "unwritten rules" are my biggest gripe with baseball today. |
