Drafted players immediately become free agents

Over the past few months I have tried a couple times to start a sim in 1901 as my favorite team, intending to take it all the way to the present (this is in OOTP 20.) It always goes fine for a few years and then in about 1906 or 7 this weird thing starts happening. Every player I draft becomes a free agent directly after I draft them. I try to go into commissioner mode and edit them onto my team in the "select new team" thing, but they just become free agents again (and usually this causes the game to crash). Even if I quit my job and try to edit them onto my former team, or if I edit them onto another team (successfully) and try to trade for them, anytime the players I drafted would go onto my roster, they instead become free agents.

I've started in other years and gotten to the present successfully, this only happens when I start with a team in 1901, and it always waits like 6 years before it happens. It's happened in at least 3 separate saves. Anyone know what's going on or what I can do?
