Just over 250,000 in the '61 census.

at first, I wondered "Why Baltimore?", then I checked on Google...and indeed, I never knew Baltimore loved hockey that much!

and it seems Baltimore is leading along with Vancouver...im curious: if Baltimore gets accepted, what would that mean for Washington if they get admitted, too?

Well Baltimore stopped applying once Washington got their team in 74, so certainly there was a belief that both cities wouldn't be awarded teams. Whether the NHL outright said that I'm not certain.

1966-1967 Season Review

Philly and San Fran top their divisions with San Fran making the playoffs for the first time.

But Cleveland won their first Cup beating the Maple Leafs!

Matt Sarich of San Fran set a new points record at 105.

Mindaugas Zadeikas of Lithuania and now playing in Cleveland moved into 2nd in all time scoring. But at 38 he's still 200 points behind St. Pierre for the all time scoring lead.

Well unless someone else breaks the tie today I'll decide tomorrow between Baltimore and Minneapolis for the 2nd expansion spot after Vancouver.

St. Louis and Pittsburgh Re-Branding

Vote

1967 is upon us.

In St. Louis new owners are looking at rebranding the Eagles to the Blues. Should they?

In Pittsburgh new owners are looking at rebranding. Many have commented on how the new arena looks like an igloo and suggested the team should be named after an arctic animal. So Yellow Jackets or Penguins? Even though no igloos existed where Penguins live.

Jack Kent Cooke has purchased the Kings and moved them to the Forum.

San Francisco had the option to go to the Oakland Arena across the bay, but sensing the fans wouldn't go with them, pushed hard to get an arena built in San Francisco (unlike real history).

Philly was moved to the newer Spectrum.

So expansion vote is winding down while re-branding vote is winding up.

1967-1968 Season in Review

Cleveland and Detroit win the new divisions and the two met in the Cup final with Cleveland winning their 2nd straight.

Will McIlwhom (love that name) now with the Seals wins his 2nd d-man of the year award.

Hampus Ohlsson of Detroit wins Goalie of the year and

Adrian McKnight of Cleveland wins MVP.

1970-1971 Expansion??

VOTE

Should we expand by another two team in 1970-71?

IF we do here are the candidates:

Who's pounding at the door?

Buffalo still strongly interested. Has an owner and will have an arena.
Urban Area will be about 1,100,000 in 1970

Baltimore still strongly interested. Has an owner and will expand their current arena. Will be up to 1,500,000 UA in 1970. But should we hold out for the much larger Washington area nearby?

Who'e expressed interest?

Atlanta - Have interested owners, but only an 8,000 seat arena a new one would have to be built. City is expected to be over 1,100,000 by the 1970 census. They have no hockey history but are seen as a key city in the South.

Washington - no set owner and current arena only seats 7,000. A new one would have to be built. But UA will be almost 2,500,000 in 1970, by far the largest city without a team. Have some hockey history.

Kansas City - no set owner and current arena seats 7,000. A new one would have to be built. Have some hockey history and would be a bridge to the western teams. UA will be 1,100,000 by 1970.

No interest reported
Seattle
Portland
Houston
and the smaller Canadian cities aren't making a peep.

I would hold off expanding until 1974-75 or 1975-76 season, & do an expansion every 5 yrs afterward, the 1970's drafts were pretty sim at times for good players.
Baltimore & Buffalo
