San Antonio Missions (3-5 .375 3 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL East) at

Castles gave up 6 runs in 5.2 IP at Seattle in his first start.

Lerer only made it to the 2nd inning of his 1st start before leaving with back tightness.

We are making a permanent change in the lineup. Fernando Mexicano does not appear to be up to playing 3rd base, so he is being moved to left and Melvin Rodarte is moved over to 3rd and rookie Shannon Kuchta will be given an opportunity to win the 2nd base job. Our previous left field platoon was hitting .151 combined, so they can both take seats on the bench.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Multnomah County Stadium
Weather: Roof closed
Attendance: 8,187

Top of the First:

Gwang-sam Jean strikes out! Salvatore Flores strikes out! Jim Jaeger lines out to left! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Jack Hinckley strikes out... Bill Wilson flies out to center. Melvin Rodarte lines out to the pitcher...

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Andy Pineda lines a hit to right. Jim Castles grounds one to 1st, but P Roger Lerer drops the throw from Glenn Snowden for an error. That is the 5th error by our pitchers already this season.... Gwang-sam Jean takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out. Salvatore Flores grounds a hit to right and 2 runs score... 2 to 0, Missions. They pull off a double steal... But the next 2 make outs and no more runs score.

Top of the Fourth:

Jeff Parrish leads off with a home run to left... 3 to 0, San Antonio.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Glenn Snowden lines a hit to right and Fernando Mexicano draws a 4 pitch walk, his first free pass of the season. Shannon Kuchta bloops a hit to right center and Snowden beats the throw to the plate! 3 to 1, Missions. Dave Risinger gets plunked to load the bases up with 1 out. A wild pitch scores Mexicano! 3 to 2, Missions. They walk Craig Petitto, who is batting under .100, intentionally, to load the bases back up for P Roger Lerer. He flies out to center and Kuchta tags up and heads home, but CF Gwang-sam Jean throws him out to end the inning...

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Ken Shepherd singles and scores on a double to left by Lee Cole. 4 to 2, Missions. The Bullpen is scrambled, but the next 2 batters make outs.

Bottom of the Eighth:

Melvin Rodarte leads off with a walk and goes to 3rd on a hit to right by Glenn Snowden. Fernando Mexicano strikes out... Shannon Kuchta hits a 3-run home run to left!!! 5 to 4, Beavers! That sends P Jim Castles to the showers. New Pitcher: Herb Roetter (27-R). He gives up a 2 out hit to C Glenn Oswell, but that is all.

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Garry Ayers (28-R). Gene Dougherty (29-S) is in to play right. With 1 out, PH Victor Maldonado (26-L) lines a hit to left. PH Paulin Paruzzi (35-L) grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and Maldonado moves to scoring position with 2 outs. Gwang-sam Jean pops out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 5 to 4

We had 8 hits and made 1 error

LHP Dick Register pitched 1 perfect inning with a strikeout.
RHP Jim Krueger (W 1-0) went 1 perfect inning with 2 strikeouts.
RHP Garry Ayers (SV 1) pitched a scoreless 9th and allowed 1 hit.

Jim Castles (L 0-2) went 7.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks (1 INT), 1 HB and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he scored a run.

1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. 2B Shannon Kuchta, in his first Major League start, had 3 hits with a home run and 4 RBI!!! C Glenn Oswell had a hit in his only AB. I am not superstitious, but my Grandpa was, even though he said he wasn't, so I am taking some precautions in his honor. I have a rabbit's foot in one pocket and a 4-leaf clover in the other, but only to honor my grandfather, not because I believe in any of that nonsense.

Hey! Trudy! What's this? Just one cold compress prepared for the game?

"We have never used more than one in any game, ever."

Yeah, that's because we have had 8 of them ready. With just one, we will for certain need a second. Make up 8 just like usual!

We are in sunny San Diego to play a 3 game series over the weekend. The Padres are off to a rough start, losing their first 8 games of the season. Today is their Home Opener. They just lost 3 of 4 in Denver even though they outscored the Bears in the series, 22 to 21. The Padres are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 3.80 runs per game (Portland is 13th with 3.60). They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 5.20 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.00).

Portland Beavers (6-4 .600 2 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (1-9 .100 7 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (26-R 1-0 1.98) vs. SD: John Riley (25-R 0-1 4.63)

Muir gave up 2 runs in 6.2 IP in his last start, notching his first win. Hew walked 1 and struck out 7.

Riley is their #1 starter. In his first outing, he gave up 5 runs in 3.2 IP, but his last time out, he only allowed 1 run in 8 innings, but his Bullpen blew the save.

We are in Oakland to play the Oaks a 4 game series through the weekend. They beat the Angels in 2 games here on Monday and Tuesday. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 4.20 runs per game (Portland is up to #14 with 3.53). Their BA (.275) and OPS (.718) suggest that they should have scored more runs than they have. They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.27 per game (Portland, after getting hammered by Hollywood's hitters in the last two games, has dropped into a tie for 2nd with 3.67). We are tied for the 2nd fewest HR allowed (9) with LA, but Oakland leads with only 7.

Portland Beavers (7-8 .467 4 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (6-9 .400 5 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (26-R 1-0 1.09) vs. OAK: Cary Cornman (34-R 2-1 4.82)

Muir pitched 11 shutout innings last time out, but it was not enough to get him a win. He only allowed 5 hits and 2 walks.

Cornman gave up 4 runs in 5 IP last time out, but it was good enough for him to get a win... He has not allowed a HR yet this season.

Portland Beavers (8-8 .500 4 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at

POR: Bobby Johnson (22-R 1-1 1.57) Rookie vs. OAK: Vic Harrington (33-R 1-2 1.71)

Today is Johnson's Birthday! He only allowed 4 hits and 1 run in 7 IP in his last start, but that was not good enough to get a win. 1B Luis Hernandez (32-R), who we traded to get Johnson, leads the Majors with 9 HR and has 22 RBI in 16 games... No regrets, though, so far.

Harrington pitched a shutout in his first start for his 1 win. In the two starts since, he allowed 2 runs in 6 IP in each one and got a loss in both.

If Melvin Rodarte fouls out to the catcher, I think the time-space continuum may be in jeopardy... We are back home to begin a 7 game home stand that will last 10 days with 2 games against the Sacramento Solons. They won 3 out of 4 in San Diego over the weekend. They are 13th in the PCL in scoring so far with 3.84 runs per game (Portland is dead last with 3.47). That's what happens when you trade one 40+ HR hitter away and the other quits hitting home runs.... The Solons have only hit 9 HR on the season, but we have only hit 8, the fewest in Baseball. Sacramento is also 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.95 per game (Portland is down to #3 with 3.68). We are going to drop a lot further before the season is over...

Sacramento Solons (9-10 .474 4.5 GB tied for 5th place in the PCL West) at

We put LF Fernando Mexicano (20-L) on the Disabled List and called up C Marcell Amici (31-R). He was batting .313/.389/.344 at Vancouver (A). With no catchers who can hit, having 3 on the active roster will let us pinch-hit for them more often. However, finding someone who can hit for them may be problematic....
