3B Jeff Galka (36-R), who is in the last year of his contract and is making $950,000, asked me about an extension. I asked him what he thought and he said he would be willing to sign a 3 year contract for $1.5 million per season.... I said, "Yeah, me too."

Portland Beavers (23-10 .697 5.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (11-22 .333 10.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Steve Stewart (25-L 1-0 1.93 1 SV) vs HOU: John Guss (33-R 1-2 3.86)

Stewart is making his 1st Major League start. He started 2 games in the B Leagues back in 2001. If he does well, he will start again, if he stinks it up, he will go back to the Pen and make it much better than it is right now. I am kind of rooting for him to stink it up....

Guss gave up 2 runs to the Seals in 7 IP last time out, but did not get a decision. He was 13-8 with a 2.95 ERA for the Angels in 2002, but only started 2 games in 2003 and missed all of 2004 with a torn labrum. We faced him twice in 2002 and he pitched very well for Los Angeles both times, but did not get a decision.

Top of the First:

Bottom of the First:
Tracy King grounds out to 3rd. Gwang-sam Jean strikes out! Russ Jimenez draws a walk. Tommy Gibralter strikes out!

Tommy Gibralter flies out to left and Jean beats the throw home and Jimenez takes 3rd. 2 to 1, Astros. Jim Sager flies out to left!

Top of the Fourth:

Kim Springer muscles a hit over the infield to left. Enrique Ramos grounds a hit up the middle and Springer beats the throw to 3rd, but calls out Trudy the Trainer... Pinch-runner: Dale Thomas (24-R), who will stay in the game to play left. Jeff Galka pops out to left and the runners hold... Jay Kerksieck draws a walk to load the bases up with 1 out. A.J. Lee beats out an infield hit and Thomas scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2. Dave Maynard hits one hard and deep to left center and it could be.....off the top of the wall, dernit.... But he ends up with a 3 run triple!!! 5 to 2, Beavers! With the infield in, P Steve Stewart grounds a hit up the middle and Maynard scores! 6 to 2, Beavers! That's all for P John Guss. New Pitcher: Mitch Hall (35-L) with a 2.19 ERA in 12.1 IP. He was signed as a free agent from Montreal where he had a 2.10 ERA in 77 IP last year. Ron Smart (21-L) is in to play short in a double switch, which means Jim Sager's bat is out of the lineup! PH Glenn Snowden (28-R) pops out to short... Jerry Suazo grounds a hit up the middle. Dale Thomas strikes out looking...

Bottom of the Fifth:

Tracy King grounds a double over the 1st base bag. But the next three make outs!

Bottom of the Sixth:

PH Bob Alsip (31-R), 0 for 1 this series, doubles to center. The Bullpen is up. Kevin Shellhammer grounds a hit to right. A wild pitch scores Alsip... 6 to 3, Beavers. With 1 out, Pete Copus takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. The next two make outs!

Steve Stewart (W 2-0) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 7. He threw a WP. 111 pitches. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI. A bit shaky, but I like those strikeouts, so he will get another start.
LHP Vinny Martinez (H 1), in his Beaver debut, pitched a perfect inning, though two of the outs were rather loud and it took him 16 pitches, which is a lot for a perfect inning.
RHP Jerry Switalski (SV 1) pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 2.

John Guss (L 1-3) went 3.1 innings, gave us 6 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Trudy's report on Kim Springer is back spasms that she expects to bother him for 4 or 5 days.

Why do they schedule games on Friday the 13th? I am not superstitious, but it just seems reckless to me...

We are back home to play Oakland a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 in Dallas. We split a pair of games to open the season here with them. They are 8th in scoring in the PCL with 4.09 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.97). The Oaks are also 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.14 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.62). Their run differential is -2 and ours is +46, the Best in Baseball.

Oakland Oaks (17-18 .486 7.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (24-10 .706 6.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

OAK: John Prewitt (24-R 2-3 3.70) Rookie vs POR: Rick Webber (23-R 2-2 3.10)

Prewitt gave up 6 runs in 5.2 IP last time out with 3 HR allowed to get a loss. He was a 5th round pick in the 2004 B Leagues Draft. He was not ranked as a prospect. We have never faced him.

Webber only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 IP in a win against the Twins last time out, but they got 2 runs (1 earned).

May 14 and we have a 7.5 game lead in the division. We are the only team in the West with a winning record.

Oakland Oaks (17-19 .472 8.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (25-10 .714 7.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

He has been hit hard in his last 2 starts, but had a no decision last time out with 5 runs and 8 hits allowed in 3.2 IP, though he did strike out 7. In the 2nd game of the season, he pitched a 3 hit shutout against us.

Last time out, in the first start of his career, Larkin allowed 2 runs in 6.2 IP with 1 BB and 6 SO, but did give up 7 hits.

San Francisco traded RF Jerry Serrano (31-R) to Los Angeles for 4 minor leaguers: RP Ed Yarbough(24-R), RP Carlos Estrada (24-R), CF John Zutavern (22-L) and RF Wilbert Jackson (24-L).

Serrano is hitting .307 with a .793 OPS and is a .292 career hitter with a .750 OPS and won a Gold Glove in 2002.

Only Zutavern is considered any kind of prospect of the minor leaguers sent to the Seals and he is unranked, but he was the 13th overall pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. We actually had him in the Beavers farm system before the B Leagues were given their freedom. Yarbough was released by the Seals in April of 2004. Jackson has power potential and a very strong arm, but not much else to recommend him. Estrada is a problem child.

We are in Hollywood to play the Stars a 2 game set. They lost 2 of 3 at Seattle over the weekend. We split a pair of games here, April 26-27. They are 12th in scoring in the PCL with 3.84 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.95). The Stars are hitting .272, 4th best in the League, but are last with only 11 HR. We are 3rd in BA (.275) and tied for 2nd in HR (39). They are also 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.45 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.70). Their run differential is -23 and ours is +46, still the Best in Baseball, by 6 over Denver, now. By the way, the National League is only hitting .239 and has a league ERA of 3.14. The PCL is hitting .259 and has a league ERA of 3.67.

Portland Beavers (26-11 .703 7.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Hollywood Stars (19-19 .500 7.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (26-R 6-1 2.56) vs HOL: Sam Henderson (31-R 5-3 2.15) 3-time All-Star(01-02,04)

Johnson has won his last 6 starts, though the most recent one was not very pretty: 4 runs allowed in 5 IP with 7 hits and 4 walks and no strikeouts.

Henderson is their #1 starter and has won his last 3 starts. He gave up 2 runs in 7 IP at Denver to win his most recent. We faced him in April and beat him, getting 17 hits in 6.2 IP for 7 runs.

For Hollywood, C Tony Figueroa hit a 3 run home run, the 1st home run of his career and drew a walk.

The Stars announced that P Jeff Hunt had back spasms that they expected to take 4 or 5 days to subside.

Trudy's report on Kim Springer is a strained rib cage muscle that she expects to bother him for about 3 weeks. He can play with the injury, she says, but I do not think we should risk it with our big lead in the division. We will hold off putting him on the DL, though, since tomorrow is an off day and I will explore possible trade options as we have no use for injury prone players, no matter how good they are.

I could not work out a trade for Kim Springer, so we will keep him for now and hope he gets healthy. He was put on the DL and Roberto Damas (33-R) was recalled from Vancouver (A). Putting Steve Stewart back in the Bullpen makes Vinny Martinez redundant and he refused to go to the minors, so he was waived and designated for assignment. David Cruz was activated from his rehab assignment and will go in the rotation.

2B George Brock and SS Dave Maynard are healed up from their infirmities, so they will play today.

We are back home to play Seattle a 4 game series through the weekend. They just beat Oakland in a pair of games at home. They have won 5 of their last 6 and have scored 29 runs in their last 3 games. We were 11-3 against them last year when they finished 78-84 in 6th place in the PCL West. Which means they had a winning record except for us. We are 32-24 (.571) since 2001. The Rainiers are 8th in the PCL in scoring with 4.18 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.82). They are 16th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 4.85 per game (Portland is #4 with 3.69). Opponents are batting .287 against the Rainiers, 16 points higher than the next worse team. We are allowing a .260 BA, which is a point worse than the League average and a whole lost worse than the League best .236 we gave up last year. Their run differential is -27 and ours is +44, now tied for the Best in Baseball with the red hot Denver Bears.

Seattle Rainiers (19-21 .475 8.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (27-12 .692 7.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SEA: Craig Daly (28-L 1-2 3.42) vs POR: Rich Larkin (25-R 4-2 2.63 4 SV)

Daly was acquired in a trade with Toronto in March. He was 12-8 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts as a rookie for the Blue Jays last year. We have never faced him. He gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 5 IP last time out in a no decision. He has had 8 starts. His lone win was on April 12.

Larkin gave up 4 runs (3 earned) and 8 hits in 5 IP, but struck out 7 last time out in a loss.

P Jimmy Taylor refused to go to Vancouver, so we waived him and designated him for assignment. I hope someone claims him. If they don't, we will cut his sorry butt and eat almost $2 million....

We called up RP Larry McLellan (28-R).

We are in Kansas City to play the Royals a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games here to Salt Lake City and have lost 4 in a row. We were 5-3 against them last year when they finished 87-75 in 2nd place in the PCL East. We are 18-14 (.563) since 2001. They are 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.30 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.69). The Royals are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.72 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.69). Their run differential is +27 and ours is +45, still the Best in Baseball, but only 1 ahead of now #2 Denver.

Portland Beavers (29-16 .644 5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Kansas City Royals (26-20 .565 1 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Bobby Johnson (26-R 7-2 2.39) vs KC: Tony Fernandez (22-R 4-1 2.19) CY/All-Star/Gold Glove (03)

After winning 2 straight games where his pitching was a bit shaky, Johnson allowed only 1 run on 5 hits in 8.1 IP last time out, but took a loss.

Fernandez gave up 4 runs in 8 IP in a no decision in his last start. He was 1-1 against us last year with a good game in the win and a bad one in the loss.

Trade #65
SP John Krawczyk (25-R) to Washington for RP Ron Van Leeuwen (27-R)

Krawczyk pitched well last year, but has stunk it up this year.

Van Leeuwen will hopefully be an upgrade over Jimmy Taylor.

Yesterday's game was rained out, so we are playing a doubleheader today.

No one claimed RP Jimmy Taylor (32-R) and his $950,000 salary through next season, so we cut him.... What a waste.... I should be fired over trading for him and wasting almost $2 million.... When your budget is only $12.6 million, that is no small change....

We are in the Mile High City to play the Denver Bears a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 here to the Seals over the weekend. Bottom of the Second:
Joe Taylor swings at the first pitch and doubles over the head of the center fielder and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Duane Bailey flies out to center and Taylor tags up and beats the throw home... 2 to 1, Bears.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Eric Daniels bloops a hit to left and steals 2nd. Joe Taylor doubles down the right field line and Daniels scores... 3 to 1, Bears. With 2 outs, we walk Carroll Morse, the .200 hitter, to face P Guy Young. We gain very little by this maneuver and waste a chance to have the pitcher lead off the next inning... P Young strikes out.

Lost - 4 to 2

2 runs in Mile High....

We had 7 hits (all singles) and made no errors
Denver had 10 hits and made no errors

Barry Phillips (L 7-3) went 7 innings, allowed 4 runs, 10 hits, 5 walks (3 INT) and struck out 3. He threw a WP.

Around the League: Ron Marling (24-R) had his 3rd start for Detroit and pitched a CG 2 hitter, allowing 1 run. He has not allowed more than 3 hits in any of his starts for Detroit. He has become a completely different pitcher in a Tiger uniform. For us, he pitched 24.2 innings, allowed 32 hits and 5 HR, but only walked 4 and struck out 10. For the Tigers, all of his stats have been inverted: 24 IP, 7 H, 1 HR, 12 BB and 22 SO. It is like he turned from Bill Lee into Nolan Ryan.... He is 2-0 with an 0.75 ERA for them...
