Terrell was a slick tall heavy, who was 6'6", with an 82" reach. He could jab, stick and move all night, and was a top clincher. In short, out boxing him was not the way to beat him. He had a good defense and a pretty good offense too. Very much a stand-up boxer as well. He beat Machen, Chuvalo and Jones well, although they went the distance. He wasn't a knock-you-out fighter, but a scientific fighter that used his natural talents and skill to win. He was also tough- he endured 15 rounds of punishment from Ali.

Terrell was trained by Sam Solomon during his career.
