We are in Milwaukee to play the Brewers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend and have lost 9 of their last 10 games. This is our first meeting this season. We were 4-4 against them last year. The Brewers are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.31 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.32). They are last in fewest runs allowed with 4.88 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.84). Their run differential is -27 and ours is -26.

Portland Beavers (22-28 .440 10.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (21-27 .438 15 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

POR: Joe Hoehn (27-R 0-2 4.76) Rookie vs. MIL: Chris Baker (29-R 2-2 3.77)

This could get ugly.... Hoehn is prone to HR and Miller Park is an easy place to hit them and the Brewers are 2nd in the PCL in hitting them... Hoehn actually had a Quality Start last time out, but just barely.

Baker had a save (his only relief appearance all season) and a no decision start against us last year. We scored 5runs in 4.1 IP in the start.

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell doubles down the right field line! Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to left and Mitchell heads home. The Gold Glover, Fernando Martinez, makes a horrible throw and Mitchell is safe and Hinckley goes to 2nd. Martinez gets an error. 1 to 0, Beavers! Shannon Kuchta did not mean to bunt one, but that is what he does and is thrown out by the catcher, 2-3, and Hinckley goes to 3rd. No credit for a SH, though. Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to center and Hinckley scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the First:

Bottom of the Second:

With 2 outs, Antonio Flores gets beaned and steals 2nd. Bill Watson hits a home run to left... Tie game: 2 to 2.

Top of the Third:
Brian Mitchell leads off with an infield hit, but hurts himself and calls out Trudy the Trainer.... Pinch-runner: Rick Woodell (31-L). He'll stay in the game to play 3rd and Fernando Mexicano will move to left and Jose Julio will move to right. With 2 outs, Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to center and Woodell goes to 3rd. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right!!! 5 to 2, Beavers!!!

Bottom of the Third:

PH Dean Powers (33-R) leads off with a double down the right field line. Kenny Masline walks on 4 pitches... Steve Hermanson grounds a hit to right and Powers scores... 5 to 3, Beavers. The Bullpen is stirring. Andres Garcia lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded for the League leader in HR, Fernando Martinez. He takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to force in a run... 5 to 4, Beavers. Larry McNeil grounds into a 1-2-3 double play! Antonio Flores lines a hit to right and both base runners score.... 6 to 5, Brewers. Bill Watson lines a hit to right and Flores goes to 3rd... Rick Fountain, an automatic out, lines a hit to center and Flores scores... 7 to 5, Brewers. Dean Powers lines a hit to center and Watson scores... 8 to 5, Brewers... Kenny Masline grounds a hit to right and another run is in... 9 to 5, Brewers.... Lets see how many 2 out base hits, Hoehn can give up in a row... So far, we are at 5.... Steve Hermanson grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Fourth:

New Pitcher: Juan Romero (26-R) with a 2.45 ERA in 18.1 IP. With 2 outs, PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) lines a hit to right. Rick Woodell hits a home run to right center!! 9 to 7, Brewers.

Bottom of the Fifth:

P David Fuentes (25-R) strikes out the side in order!

Lost - 12 to 7

We had 12 hits and made no errors
Milwaukee had 14 hits and made 1 error

Joe Hoehn (L 0-3) went 3 innings, allowed 9 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 1.
RHP David Fuentes went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 4. He is great as long as the game is not on the line...
LHP Chuck Purnell went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 runs, 2 hits and struck out 1.
RHP Jim Kokos faced 1 batter and got 1 out, but also intentionally walked a batter and that one scored.
LHP Dick Register faced 2 batters, gave up 1 run, 1 hit, 1 home run and 1 walk.
RHP Roy Huls went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Chris Baker went 3 innings, gave us 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 1.

For Milwaukee, 1B Andres Garcia had 3 hits. CF Bill Watson had 2 hits with his 6th home run, a walk (INT), scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. PH Dong-hak Shong hit a 3 run home run, his first of the season.

Trudy's report on Brian Mitchell is a gluteus strain that will take 2 to 3 weeks to heal. He can play, but will not be able to run very well, she days. Well, running is 99% of his game, so that means he will be worthless....

Flores gave up 2 runs in 8.1 IP last time, but had a no decision.

We faced Blaine once last year and scored 5 runs in 4.1 IP, but he escaped with a no decision. He is their #1 starter. Last year, he was 15-8 with a 3.90 ERA in 27 starts.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Miller Park
Weather: 69 F, Clear Skies, with a 12 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 12,829

Top of the First:
Jose Julio strikes out on 3 pitches... Jack Hinckley strikes out looking... Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the First:
Kenny Masline swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. Steve Hermanson swings at the first pitch and grounds one up the middle, but 2B Shannon Kuchta makes a diving stop and throws him out! Andres Garcia beats out an infield hit. He now has a 14 game hitting streak. Fernando Martinez grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Second:
Larry McNeil walks on 4 pitches... Antonio Flores lines a hit to left. Bill Watson, who has tattooed us so far this series, grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! McNeil goes to 3rd. Automatic out, Rick Fountain, grounds a hit to right and McNeil scores... 1 to 0, Brewers.

Bottom of the Third:
For the second inning in a row, P Frank Flores walks the leadoff batter. This time it is Kennie Masline. Steve Hermanson singles to center and Masline beats the throw to 3rd. Hermanson steal 2nd. Andres Garcia doubles off the wall in right and both runners score... 3 to 0, Brewers. The next three all make outs.

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Jim Shippy gets our first hit of the game, a line drive to right center for a single. Don Neumann beats out an infield hit. Juan Rojas lines a hit to left and Shippy scores! 3 to 1, Brewers. P Frank Flores bunts the runners up. 2 outs. Jose Julio hits a home run to left!!! 4 to 3, Beavers!!!

Bottom of the Fifth:

For the fourth straight inning, the Brewers get their leadoff man aboard; this time with a hit by Andres Garcia. He steals 2nd. Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. The Bullpen is up. A wild pitch moves the runners up... Larry McNeil lines out to left and Don Neumann fires to 2nd to double off Martinez! Antonio Flores grounds out to 2nd!!

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Rookie Rich Larkin (22-R), looking for his first career save. PH Stan Babik (23-R), hitting .256 with 2 HR in 43 AB, grounds one to 2nd and Shannon Kuchta throws it away for a 2 base error.... If you are a fan of Kuchta, you had better enjoy him while you can... He will not be our 2nd baseman next year... Kenny Masline strikes out on 3 pitches! Steve Hermanson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Andres Garcia grounds one to the right side and 1B Glenn Snowden makes a diving stop and tosses to P Larkin at 1st for the out! The runners move up and the winning run is in scoring position with 2 outs for Fernando Martinez, the League leader in HR.... He is walked intentionally... That seems sensible, but Larkin's control is not that great and Larry McNeil, the next batter has already walked twice this game... 2-2 pitch from Larkin and McNeil tries to check his swing, but the ump rings him up and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 4 to 3

We had 5 whole hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 9 hits and made 1 error

Frank Flores (W 5-3) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP.

LHP Chuck Purnell (H 1) faced 1 batter and retired him.
RHP Rich Larkin (SV 1) pitched a scoreless 9th, allowed 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.

John Richardson (L 2-5) went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 4.
RHP Mickey Wilcox pitched 3 perfect innings and struck out 4.

RF Jose Julio hit his 3rd home run of the season and had 3 RBI. C Jim Shippy had a hit and a walk and scored a run.

For Milwaukee, 1B Andres Garcia had 3 hits with a double and 2 RBI.

I had dinner with the Brewers's GM after the game and he lamented how his team was so desperate for starting pitching and I lamented how my team was so desperate for Major League bats. And out of the blue he said that Fernando Martinez could be had for a good pitcher. I told him that I did not have any to spare. I agreed that we had some good ones, but we did not have anyone who could take their spot if we traded them away. He said, " You got a good one that is not even in the rotation now, so you won't miss him." I said, "I thought Joe Hoehn would be decent, but he got lit up." He said, "Not Hoehn. I am talking about Ricardo Gil." "But Gil won't be able to pitch until August." "Oh, we aren't going to win the Division this season anyway; I need him for next year."

Trade #28:

P Ricardo Gil (23-R) to Milwaukee for LF Fernando Martinez (27-L).

P John Cox (29-L) and P David Fuentes (25-R) have been sent to Vancouver (A). P Mike Wagner (30-R) is recalled and P Larry Warner (26-L) is called up to make his Major League debut.

I looked around for a lefty reliever to trade for and there are none to be had. There are very few who are any good and those are either slackers or injury prone or old men.

We are back in Multnomah County Stadium to face Oakland in a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home with Salt Lake City. We are 4-0 against them on the season, having swept them in a series in Oakland in the middle of April. The Oaks are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.93 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.33). Their batters have the 2nd worst BA in the League (.236), but that is miles above us (.227). They are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.57 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.98). Our pitchers have been the 2nd toughest to hit (.233). The Twins are allowing only a .222 BA to their opponents. Oakland's run differential is -35 and ours is -35.

Oakland Oaks (25-29 .463 11.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (23-31 .426 13.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

OAK: Cary Cornman (35-R 1-6 5.43) vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 4-4 2.12) Gold Glove

We beat Cornman back in April but only scored 2 runs (1 earned) in 7.2 IP. He was 16-8 with a 3.62 ERA last year.

Muir has lost his last 2 starts, allowed 8 runs in 13 IP, but only 4 were earned.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
OAKLAND
1: RF Alex Uriegas (30-L .157-51-2-3-.522)
2: CF John Trent (30-R .239-213-6-22-.702) HIt .303 last year

Game Start: 7:05 PM

Weather: 66 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 14 MPH wind blowing right to left
Attendance: 12,834

Top of the First:
Alex Uriegas swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. John Trent strikes out on 3 pitches! Javy Puente, who now leads all of Baseball with 16 HR 1/3 of the way through the schedule, swings at the first pitch and lines out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Rick Woodell works the count full and then walks. Jack Hinckley strikes out... Fernando Martinez swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep center. Glenn Snowden, back in the cleanup spot to bat between the two lefty Fernando's, hits a home run to right center!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano flies out to deep right.

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Juan Rosa draws a walk. P Cary Cornman does NOT bunt, but instead doubles down the right field line and Rosa scores... 2 to 1, Beavers. That is the first hit for the Oaks... A passed ball sends Cornman to 3rd... Alex Uriegas strikes out looking! 2 outs. John Trent strikes out! P Steve Muir has 6 SO! He has already tied his season high.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Fernando Mexicano hits a home run to right center! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Juan Rosa strikes out! That is K #10 for Steve Muir! A new Beaver record! Bobby Johnson (23-R) twice struck out 9 last season, but no one had more than 7 this year before today!

Bottom of the Seventh:

Rick Woodell loops a hit to right and steals 2nd. Jack Hinckley draws a walk. Set up perfectly for the Big Three! But they all make outs... It does not mater what I do; we will just never score runs....

Top of the Eighth:

PH Bobbie Duvall (34-R) lines a hit to left. With 1 out, John Trent grounds one to the right side and 2B Shannon Kuchta makes an unbelievable stop and throws him out! Duvall goes to 2nd. Javy Puente lines a hit to center and Duvall scores... 3 to 2, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Larry Warner (26-L), to make his Major League debut. Let's see if THIS left-hander can get a left-hander out... Tim Metts swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right... 4 to 3, Oaks... No, this left-hander cannot get left-handers out... I give up... Our offense is never going to be score any runs and our Bullpen is never going to get anyone out when it matters... Never!

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Larry Johnson (24-R), their closer with a 1.21 ERA and only 11 H and 6 BB in 29.2 IP. 0.57 WHIP... Right-handed batters are 3 for 53 against him (.057). PH Don Neumann (32-S) strikes out... Rick Woodell swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right center!!!!! Tie game: 4 to 4!!! The next two make outs, though....

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Roy Huls (21-R). Top of their order up. Alex Uriegas swings at a 3-0 pitch and lines out to left, Fernando Mexicano making a diving catch! And they go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Tenth:

Snowden, Mexicano and Kuchta all make outs...

Top of the Eleventh:
With 1 out, Mario Rodriguez lines a hit to center. With 2 outs, he tries to steal and gets gunned down!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
New Pitcher: Larry Sober (31-R) with a 6.97 ERA. 19 BB in 20.2 IP. 7-8-9 up for us. We go down in order...

Top of the Twelfth:

New Pitcher: Garry Ayers (29-R). He strikes out the side in order!

Bottom of the Twelfth:
Top of our order up now. Let's get a run! With 2 outs, Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glenn Snowden walks. Fernando Mexicano strikes out....

Top of the Thirteenth:
Top of their order up. Alex Uriegas doubles down the left field line... With 1 out, we walk RF Gerry Elliott (29-L) intentionally, much to my chagrin... Their two big boppers, Javy Puente and Tim Metts are out of the game, by the way. 1B Alex Montoy (35-S) grounds a hit to center and Uriegas scores... 5 to 4, Oaks. Call to the Bullpen: Mike Wagner (30-R). Mario Rodriguez grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the Thirteenth:

P Larry Sober, starting his 3rd inning of work... We are helping his 6.97 ERA immensely.... Shannon Kuchta draws a walk. You know a guy has to be wild if Kuchta is walking... Pinch-runner: Dave Risinger (26-R). He does NOT run as we hoped and Jim Shippy grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.... Juan Rojas flies out to right.... Utterly pitiful.... I need a vacation....

Lost - 5 to 4

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Oakland had 11 hits and made no errors

Steve Muir is the latest in a long line of Beaver starting pitchers to fail to get the win they deserved....

Steve Muir went 7.2 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 10.
LHP Larry Warner (BS 1), in his Major League debut (and swan song), faced 1 batter and gave up a home run.
RHP Rich Larkin went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Roy Huls went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Garry Ayers (L 1-1) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 4.
RHP Mike Wagner threw 1 pitch and got 2 outs.

RHP Larry Sober (W 1-3), who usually pitches like he is drunk, went 3 scoreless innings, gave us 3 walks and struck out 2.

3B Rick Woodell had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, drew a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. CF Jack Hinckley walked twice. 1B Glenn Snowden hit his 13th home run, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. RF Fernando Mexicano had 2 hits with his 12th home run. Shannon Kuchta had a hit and a walk. Here is a lovely stat for you: The Beavers are 6-20 (.231) at home and 17-12 (.586) on the road.

P Ken Powell (30-R) is on his way back to Vancouver (A). There are whispers that he might not make it that far.... Who do we call up? None of the guys we sent there recently have been there the required 10 days and we have not put anyone on the DL.... I guess it will be P Jennings Sims (29-R), he of the odd name and the ugly ERA.... Actually, the 4.08 ERA he pitched to for the Beavers last year, doesn't look that bad compared to what some of these guys are doing this year....

Oakland Oaks (27-29 .482 10.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (23-33 .411 14.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

OAK: Greg Ware (26-L 8-1 2.05) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 3-4 2.40)

Ware was their closer last year, but is their #1 starter this season. He had 2 SV against us last year; we have never faced him as a starter. He has pitched 3 straight complete games and has a string of 8 in a row where he has gone at least 8 innings and allowed 2 or fewer runs. He is currently 2nd in the PCL in SO with 82.

Johnson gave up 3 runs in 6 IP last time out and took a loss.

We are in Seattle to play a 2 game series. The Rainiers won 2 of 3 here over the weekend from the Angels. We are 0-2 against them on the season, losing 2 games here on April 15 and 16. We were outscored in the 2 games, 15 to 1. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.55 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.35). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.09 per game (Portland is down to 9th with 4.11). Their run differential is -30 and ours is -43, even though we are 4.5 games above them in the standings.

Bottom of the First:

Juan Garza walks on 4 pitches... Adam Carter grounds out to short and Garza goes to 2nd. Ronaldo Entrevinhas pops out to center. Luis Hernandez, the ex-Beaver, pops out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Second:

For the second straight inning, the lead off man (Terry Mohlman, this time) walks on 4 pitches. The next two strike out, but Don Kelly grounds a hit to center and Mohlman goes to 3rd. Silver Slugger P Bill Foley lines a hit to center and Mohlman scores. 1 to 0, Rainiers.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Jose Julio reaches on an error by 3B Ronaldo Entrevinhas. He steals 2nd. Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glenn Snowden, who has been rather hot of late, is up to bat, but we decide to not let him hit... Julio gets caught stealing 3rd for out #2 and Martinez gets caught stealing 2nd for out #3....

Bottom of the Fourth:

Rick Woodell lines our first hit of the game to left and Carlos Lopez muffs the pickup for an error and Woodell is on 2nd. P Bill Foley, not used to runners being on base, balks Woodell to 3rd. With 2 outs, Shannon Kuchta bloops a hit to right and Julio scores! Tie game: 2 to 2.

Julio gets caught stealing on a pitchout.... 2 outs. Fernando Martinez grounds out to short...

Bottom of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Rich Larkin (22-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work after a perfect 8th. Orlando Rosa grounds a hit to right... If Larkin gives up 4 straight hits here now, I am quitting Baseball.... Don Kelly tries to bunt the runner over, but pops out to 3rd. Rosa steals 2nd... Well they won't need 4 hits now... LF Chris Simpson (27-L) grounds out to 2nd and Rosa goes to 3rd. 2 outs. Juan Garza swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run down the right field line.... What else can be said?.... You ought to know without me having to tell you that that is Garza's first home run of the season in 139 AB....

We are in Utah to play the Bees a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of game from San Antonio here by identical scores of 4 to 3. They lost their closer in yesterday's game, however. Jim Nash (37-L), who has 12 SV and a 2.25 ERA is expected to miss 5 weeks with bone spurs in his elbow. Their ace, Bill Wertz (31-R), who won 25 games last season, pitched yesterday and we should miss him in this series, too. This is our first meeting this season with the Bees and we were 3-5 against them last year. They are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.93 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.37). They now have the 2nd worst BA in the PCL (.236), but are still a good bit better than our .228. The Bees are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Portland is back to 8th with 4.05). Their pitchers are allowing the opposition to bat .276, the worst in the PCL. Ours are at .236, the 2nd best. Their run differential is -32 and ours is -40.

Portland Beavers (24-35 .407 15.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at

POR: Steve Muir (27-R 4-4 2.25) Gold Glove vs. SLC: Bob Gordon (33-R 2-3 6.48)

Muir is 0-2 in his last 3 starts, but he set the Beaver record with 10 SO in his last outing, a no decision.

Gordon was 1-1 against us last year, with 1 great game and 1 lousy one.

Attendance: 25,954

Top of the First:
Jose Julio grounds a hit to left. He gets caught stealing... Jack Hinckley strikes out looking... Fernando Martinez strikes out swinging...

Bottom of the First:
Frankie Clontz takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... I swear that every walk our starting pitchers have allowed has been to lead off the inning. Every one our Bullpen has allowed has been to force in a run with the bases loaded... Clontz heads for 2nd, but gets thrown out by C Jim Shippy! Ernie Brush lines out to 3rd. Steve Rizkallah swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to left... 1 to 0, Bees. Jeff Galka walks on 4 pitches... John Polanski doubles to left... Joe Moyers grounds out to short!

Top of the Second:

Glenn Snowden loops a hit just over the 3rd baseman's glove. Fernando Mexicano grounds one back to the mound, but P Noe Rubio makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error! Shannon Kuchta bounces another one back to the mound and Rubio takes his time this time and makes a good throw to 2nd, but Ernie Brush drops the ball and the bases are loaded with no outs! Jim Shippy pops out to short... I smell no runs... Juan Rojas grounds a hit to right and Snowden scores! Tie game: 1 to 1. P Frank Flores grounds hit to left and 2 more runs are in!! 3 to 1, Beavers! Jose Julio walks to load them back up. Jack Hinckley grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.... I do not care for that young man....

Bottom of the Second:
With 2 outs, P Noe Rubio doubles down the left field line. Frankie Clontz grounds a hit to left and Rubio scores... 3 to 2, Beavers.

Bottom of the Third:

With 1 out, John Polanski hits his second home run of the series... Tie game: 3 to 3. The Bees have scored in every inning so far... It does not look like a third straight complete game is in the cards...

Bottom of the Seventh:

With 2 outs, Frankie Clontz draws a walk. The Bullpen gets up. Ernie Brush gets beaned... Steve Rizkallah lines a hit to left and Clontz scores. 4 to 3, Bees. Call to the Bullpen: Roy Huls (21-R). Jeff Galka takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load them up... John Polanski strikes out looking!

Top of the Eighth:

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Mark Spooner (35-R) with a 6.23 ERA and 51 H in 30.1 IP. He has started 5 games, but is now their closer with the regular one on the DL. As a reliever, he has only allowed 5 hits in 5.1 IP, but has walked 7. Shannon Kuchta sends one to the wall in center, but Ed Pogue runs it down... Jim Shippy beats out an infield hit. PH Rick Woodell (31-L) swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to left... PH Don Neumann (32-S) swings at another 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to center and Shippy goes to 3rd. Jose Julio strikes out...

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Garry Ayers (29-R). Dave Risinger (26-R) is in to play short. Frankie Clontz walks on 4 pitches... With 1 out, he steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Jim Shippy throws the ball into center... We walk Steve Rizkallah intentionally. He steals 2nd... With the infield in, Jeff Galka grounds one to the hole on the right side and 1B Glenn Snowden makes a lunging stop, checks the runner back to 3rd from his knees and then scrambles to the bag for the out! By a hair! Their manager is out to argue, but I have yet to see the umps overturn their own call yet... Glad we do not do stupid things like use the camera replays to make calls.... We walk John Polanski intentionally so that we can force in a run with the next walk.... Once again, we have the bases loaded with 2 of the runners being put their on purpose... Joe Moyers grounds out to 3rd!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to center. Fernando Martinez, who has not done much for us since the trade with Milwaukee, grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. He is now batting .222 with a .596 OPS as a Beaver and hit .296 with a .952 OPS for the Brewers before the trade... Glenn Snowden pops out to 2nd... 2 outs. Bottom of the Tenth:
Melvin Rodarte lines a hit to left... Ed Pogue grounds a hit to left... PH Manny Vigil (33-R), batting .292 with 2 HR in 96 AB, grounds out to 3rd and the runners move up. Call to the Bullpen: Chuck Purnell (26-L). Frankie Clontz flies out to left and Rodarte scores without a throw. 8 to 5, Beavers. 2 outs. Ernie Brush swings at the first pitch and flies out to right and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

RP Jennings Sims (29-R), who did not throw a pitch for the Beavers, and RP Mike Wagner (30-R) have been sent back to Vancouver (A). RP Jeff Gleason (25-R) and RP David Fuentes (25-R) have been recalled. Neither gave up a run in their exile to Canada.

We are back home to face Sacramento in two games. They split 4 games at home with Houston over the weekend. We are 4-1 against them on the season. This is their first trip to Portland. The Solons are 9th in scoring with 3.94 runs per game (Portland is still last, but edging up with 3.57). We are averaging 5.13 in June (8 G). Sacramento is 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.85 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.98). Their run differential is +5 and ours is -26 (+10 in June).

Sacramento Solons (30-32 .484 11.5 GB in 6th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (27-36 .429 15 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

SAC: Juan Sanchez (27-R 5-5 3.32) vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 5-4 2.03) Gold Glove

We beat Sanchez the one time he has started against us this season, but only scored 3 runs in 8 IP.

Muir pitched a 6 hit shutout in his last start.

We are 6-22 at home, by far the worst home record in Baseball, The 2nd worst in the PCL is Seattle, who is 14-18. We are 21-14 on the road and only Kansas City and San Francisco, the two PCL division leaders, are better in all of Baseball.
