Sorry, not interested!
I attempted to sign an LW via Free Agency, and whilst his wage demands were fine the offer sheet compensation wasn't—his team wanted both 1st and 3rd round picks. The player is decent, but not 1st and 3rd decent.
I figured I'd be able to trade for his rights for less, so I left the contract offer screen and negotiated a trade where his team got 4th and 5th round picks and the rights to a foreign, unsigned prospect, and I got his rights—happy days! Only now when I return to offer him a contract he states "Sorry, not interested!". I appreciate this is supposed to reflect a breakdown in contract negotiations, although IRL I'd have been able to tell him upfront it wasn't his wage demands that were the problem, but rather the demands of team owning his rights. I'd have also been able to let him know I'd be back to wrap up the contract as soon as I'd traded for his rights. So my question is, how long do I have to wait until he'll be prepared to negotiate again? Last edited by micpringle; 11-14-2017 at 11:24 AM. |

I'm curious about this as well, though maybe from a different perspective: I'm managing a KHL team and my star prospect (who has a team in the NHL that owns his rights) doesn't want to renew his contract because he wants to wait for offer sheets. What's the best way to prepare for that as a KHL team manager? Make sure I have enough payroll room to counter offer sheets? Can I expect other teams to tender offer sheets during the last season of his contract now that the player has let me know that he wants one?

Judging by what the team was owed in compensation you likely offered a contract between $3,925,976 - $5,888,960. Which will atuomatically give the team a 1st and 3rd round draft pick.
You can see the values of offer sheet compensation here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offer_sheet#Compensation Keep these values in mind when trying to offer sheet another teams players. The NHL tries to make the compensation steep so as to keep teams from actually doing it often. |

Wow, thx! The offer was around 3.9m so that makes sense. I wasn’t aware of this at all so really appreciate the link to the info. It’s great to see that FHM mirrors RL so closely with these smaller detail.
