Wow, that didn’t take long. 9 seconds in, Babe Dye converts a quick wrist shot from the slot to give the Habs a 1-0 lead. He really comes to play!! Montreal outshoots Boston 21-2 in the first. This series might not be pretty.

The Bruins are much better in the 2nd, outshooting Montreal 14-8, so, maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. Hib Milks gets a breakaway goal midway through the third period, which is the insurance marker Montreal didn’t end up needing. The Habs take game one, 3-0!

No score after the first period of game two. Again Montreal dominates out of the gate with a 17-4 edge in shots. The Bruins have now been shutout 4 straight periods in the finals. No scoring in the 2nd period either. Yes, Montreal is keeping Boston off the scoreboard, but they aren’t exactly lighting it up! Babe Dye breaks the deadlock with his 2nd of the series. Duke Keats adds an insurance marker and Montreal ends up beating Boston 3-0 for the 2nd straight game!

A scoreless first period of game three has the Bruins without a goal for 7 periods now! Quite impressive stuff from the Habs! Duke Keats scores early in the 2nd, and it’s 1-0 Montreal…Will that be enough? NO, no it wont. Normie Himes ties it with a seeing eye shot from the left hash marks. Boston has their first goal of the series to tie the game at 1. The score stays deadlocked though the 2nd, and the 3rd. Overtime is needed…

In OT, Howie Morenz takes a shot that’s blocked, the rebound goes right back to Morenz, who buries the back into an open net as a result of the block. Montreal wins 2-1 and sweeps the Stanley Cup!

1927 NHL Offseason

Eddie Shore takes home the Hart trophy in his first season in the NHL. Quite the year for Shore. MVP, Stanley Cup birth. He’s well on his way to being what he was in real life!

Here are the awards for the 1926-27 NHL Season

John Ross Roach set what looks like a unbeatable record this year. 19 shutouts from the Leafs goalie. Roach actually had 15 shutouts last year, and is now the all-time leader, even though there isn’t a lot of history yet. He played 44 games this season, so, that’s (takes out calculator) 43 percent!

Here are the NHL all-stars for the season…

No rule changes to the world of hockey this year. Everything will remain the same!

The Rangers have hit the lottery. The first overall pick is Charlie Conacher, who has the ability to be the best player in hockey one day. Conacher is a power forward who dominated in real life. I actually loved reading about Charlie, and am excited he’s in the league. The Rangers have a piece to build around.

Red Horner going 2nd is a very strong pick for the Maroons. He can be a top player at any position. Here are the draft results.

1927-28 NHL Regular Season

A month and a half into the season, and last years breakout star, John Ross Roach has played just 1 game for the Leafs. He won that game, making 24 saves, allowing one goal, putting up a 98 game rating. The Leafs just renewed JRR’s contract for 4 more years. They are starting Roy Worters, who is a excellent goalie himself, but he’s listed 2nd on the depth chart. Worters is doing fine. 1.54 GAA, SP of .925. It’s just weird. They should obviously trade on of these guys. Goaltending controversy in Toronto!

Worters and Roach

About 5 or 6 deals go down before the Jan 31st trade deadline, but nothing really worth mentioning. Hap Holmes gets traded again. This time to the Blackhawks. It’s his 5th team in 3 years I believe.

The biggest story at the moment, is the defending champion Canadiens are in major danger of missing the playoffs all together. They sit 4th in the Canadian division, and are 5 points out of a playoff spot! They will need a huge push this last 3rd to make it. The Good news for the city is their sister team, the Maroons, look like the best team in hockey. Man was I wrong about them!!

Last year, goals per game fell to 4.00. That’s more then half the offense gone from 1920, when we were seeing 8.60 goals a game. This year, it’s fallen even lower, to 3.97! The fans must like it though, as Attendance is averaging over 9000 for the first time ever. Here are the per game stats for the last few years.

Well they did it…so far. With 2 games remaining, the Montreal Canadiens made up the deficit, and more. They now lead the Leafs by 2 points. Toronto’s final two games are against first place Boston, and first place the Maroons. Meanwhile, the Habs get the last place Rangers and the Sens. 1 Habs win and Leafs loss will seal the deal.

Ok, so that is kinda unexpected. Toronto beats Boston, while the Habs lose to lowly New York. Toronto and Montreal are now tied heading to the final game of the season.

Wow, the Leafs come through against the toughest competition, and Montreal, 6 time champions, who came back to give them a chance, fold when they had it in their hands!! Toronto makes the playoffs!

The Rangers average just over a goal a game. This team might be worse then the Quebec team that went winless!

It’s a defensive world. At the end of all this, goalies from this era are going to dominate the leaderboards. Look at those save percentages!!

Rangers rookie and first overall pick Charlie Conacher started the season on the third line. By the end, he was a first liner. He finished the year with 9 goals and 10 assists. Not too shabby for a 18 year old on the worst team in the league! Sky is the limit!

Conacher

1928 NHL Playoffs

The first round is a 2 game total goal series. Here are the results...

Pittsburgh gets 3 third period goals when they needed it to win their first playoff series ever defeating the Black Hawks. Toronto upsets the Senators with a great defensive effort. Pittsburgh will play Boston, while Toronto takes on the Maroons.

The 2nd round is also a 2 game total goal series....

Upset Upset Upset! Both Pittsburgh and Toronto take out the teams that won their divisions by significant amounts! This is Pittsburgh’s first appearance in the Cup final, and Toronto’s first being the Maple Leafs!

Toronto has more talent head to toe. They have some of the best goal scorers in hockey with Nels Stewart, Laurie Scott and Ace Baily. The goaltending Toronto has is top notch too. Roy Worters is this years clear starter, and he had a great season. John Ross Roach can’t get off the bench. Pittsburgh’s Dit Clapper is the best defenseman in the series, but I cant see him being enough. Toronto is the big favourite!

Game 1

Pittsburgh controlled the majority of the play during the first period, but it was Toronto’s Harry Oliver that got the games first goal. Ed Jerimiah ties it at one after a scrambled faceoff bounced to him in the slot. Dit Clapper is able to keep a puck in at the point, which leads to Fred Elliot scoring the go ahead goal late in the 2nd. Toronto gets a number of good chances in the third. They really controlled the play, but couldn’t beat Clint Benedict. Carl Voss gets the Pirates third goal of the game, the insurance marker. An empty net goal is also added, and the Pirates win game one, 4-1.

Game 2

It feels like the Leafs should be in desperation mode for this one. It clicks early though. Gerry Lowrey finds himself alone for a breakaway beating Benedict with a backhand. 1-0 Leafs. John McKinnon converts an Ace Bailey rebound 40 seconds later and it’s 2-0! Bailey extends the lead to 3-0 before a Dit Clapper point shot gets Pittsburgh on the board. Nels Stewart gets it right back, and it’s looking like the Leafs have control in this one. The teams exchange goals in the third. Toronto wins game two, 5-2…

Bailey is game 2's first star!

Game 3

A very even, scoreless first period to begin a very important game three. A lot of the same in the second. No goals, Toronto slightly controlling the play. It’s a tight game though. The third period is all Toronto! They outshoot the Pirates 18-4, but can’t find the back of the net. Neither can Pittsburgh. No score, lets go to overtime. In OT, it takes 13 minutes for a game winner. Nick Wasnie is the hero. He scores on a pass from Doug Young. The Pirates win game 3 despite allowing 54 shots. Clint Benedict deserves a pat on the back. It was all Toronto for the last 33 minutes! Pittsburgh leads the series 2-1.

Benedict made 54 saves in game 3!

Game 4

Benedict stops another 14 shots in a scoreless first period. He’s gotta be in the Leafs head at this point. Amazingly, no one scores in the 2nd. Now I'm thinking Toronto goalie Roy Worters is getting frustrated. He’s allowed just 2 goals in the last 8 regulation periods. The Leafs finally score halfway through the third. Murray Murdoch gets it by the brick wall known as Clint Benedict. 1-0 Toronto. Thats the only goal of the game. Toronto wins it 1-0! We go to a game 5.

Worters records the game 4 shutout!

Game 5

This amazing goaltending battle comes to an end tonight. It’s Benedict vs Wolters. Winner takes all!

Toronto is all over Pittsburgh in the first. They outshoot them 16-2, but there is no score. Benedict is putting in the effort of a lifetime! Paul Thompson breaks through for the Leafs. He pots a rebound up high late in the 2nd. The shots after two, 32-6 in favour of Toronto. Pittsburgh doesn’t record a shot on net for 17 minutes in the third. They get 3 in the final 3 minutes, but they can’t score. Toronto wins it 1-0, and takes the Stanley Cup 3-2! What amazing goaltending!

1928 NHL Offseason

The goaltending in the Cup final was phenomenal! 35 year old Clint Benedict had his finest moments even in defeat. Roy Worters proved the Leafs made the right choice playing him over John Ross Roach. Here are their stats for the 1928 playoffs.

Eddie Shore wins his second straight Hart Trophy! Shore had 7 goals, 17 assists, which is pretty good considering the lack of scoring this year. He also led the league with 124 penalty minutes.

Here are the 1927/28 award winners

Here are the NHL all-star teams. I remembered to screen shot it this year!!

Hmm, I believe, it is a little weird that the winner of the Hart Trophy isn’t named to either all-star team for the season. Doesn’t really make any sense at all!

A major rule change for the upcoming season will alter the playoffs going forward.

The Rangers get another first pick in the draft, but don’t find a Charlie Conacher this year. They select Tom Anderson, who likes like a solid role player, not a star that you hope to find at the top of the draft…

Tiny Thompson suffers a major head injury.

Thompson was the starter for the Habs after arriving from Ottawa a few years ago. He did a good job, but the 25 year looks like he won’t be available this year at all. 35 year old George Hainsworth, who still looks excellent, will get another shot at a starting gig for Montreal.

Toronto trades Laurie Scott to Ottawa.

Scott has been one of the NHL’s best offensive players the last few years. He helped the Leafs win a Cup last year. Toronto deals him for a young dman who hasn’t played in the NHL. Scott moves right to the Sens top line. I like this deal for Ottawa.

Here is Laurie Scott's career so you can see how good he's been the last few years.

Chicago just stole Red Horner from the Maroons.

Horner is a future top line defender. Montreal gets a # 3 aging goalie, and a number 5 defenseman. I don’t see why they would make this deal. Chicago should be ecstatic!

1928-29 NHL Regular Season

By new years, it’s evident that scoring is gonna fall again. So far, we are season 3.71 goals per game. In the 80’s, that number would win awards for a goalie!! George Hainsworth has a GAA under 1.00 at the moment!! The Maroons are the leagues highest scoring team, averaging a whopping 2.65 goals per game!

Chicago’s Red Horner is out for the season.

Horner, the prized pickup by Chicago this offseason will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a tough injury. Horner has receiving first line minutes of the Chicago blue line, and responded with 9 points in 20 games and a 73 game rating. Pretty good for a 19 year old getting his first real action! This will really hurt the Hawks chances of coming out of the American division.

Horner

A bunch of low level guys are dealt at the trade deadline. Nothing worth mentioning.

Like last year, the Leafs find themselves out of the playoff picture needing to make up lots of ground in a short time. Like last year, they get it done….or did they. Toronto made up 6 points in the final 2 weeks of the season, to finish the year tied with Ottawa for 3rd place. Both teams finished with 55 points. Ottawa had 23 wins, two more then the Leafs. I assume that will be the tie breaker, and the champs will miss the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

I have to edit the league structure every July 1st to get rid of ot’s , ot points and whatnot. I forgot this year, so these standings are really weird. I have no idea why these rules reset every year. I have no idea how many points “ot” is worth, or what it is really. We’ll go with it this year, and hopefully I remember to make these changes in the future.

New York and Montreal, division winners will now receive a bye and play each other in the semi finals. The 2nd place teams and the 3rd place teams will play each other in round 1.

Howie Morenz and Nels Stewart are the only players to record more then a point per game. Scoring fell to 3.54 total goals per game.

Laurie Scott didn't enjoy alot of success his first year in Ottawa. 6 goals and 8 assists was all he could do. I have to imagine the Senators are disappointed in that performance.

George Hainsworth had a great year replacing the injured Tiny Thompson. A .953 save percentage says it all.

1929 NHL Playoffs

The first round is a total goal, two game series

Chicago sure gave Montreal a scare, but the Canadians advance with a 4-3 edge in goals. Detroit came back hard to win game to over the Sens, but it wasn’t enough. Montreal and Ottawa will play in the semi finals now.

Round 2 is a best of 5 series.

The Rangers played the Maroons tough, but end up getting swept by the team that looks like the Cup favourite. Montreal will play in their first ever cup final.

The Habs had an amazing chance to make it an all Montreal final, but they blow a 2-0 lead in games to lose 3-2. In the course of three games, the Maroons change their reputation from chokers.

Since I said the Maroons sucked, they have been amazing. Sure, they haven’t won anything other then regular season games, but now is their chance. I aint gonna bet against them. Joe Primeau is elite. So is Ottawa goalie Alec Connell and defenseman Hap Day. The finals are a best of 3 affair.

Game 1

The Maroons open the scoring. Wildor Larochelle gets credit on a deflection early on. Cooney Weiland makes it 2-0 after a dominant first period for Montreal. Frank Boucher gets Ottawa on the board with a power play marker but Montreal is still controlling the play. In the 3rd, the Maroons play a shut down style, limiting the Sens to 4 shots in the period. It works. Montreal wins the opener, 2-1.

Game 2

A nightmare start for the Sens. Tom Cook scores early, and it’s the periods only goal. 1-0 Montreal. The lead is extended in the 2nd with 2 more goals. All Montreal has to do is not collapse. They don’t. The teams exchange goals, and that’s it. 4-1 Montreal. The Maroons win the Cup!

1929 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Nels Stewart is awarded his 3rd Hart trophy. Stewart had 23 goals, and 22 assists, but his team missed the playoffs. It's the 2nd year in a row the league's MVP missed the playoffs. Here are the 1929 award winners.

Here are the 1928-29 all-stars.

Charlie Conacher gets a 2nd team mention as a teenager. King Clancy finally gets honored.

No changes to the in game rules, or league structures.

1929 NHL Draft

Sweeney Schriner is a strong first pick for the Pirates. He looks like he’s gonna be a strong player, but Detroit gets the steal of the draft, grabbing Buster Jackson 4th overall. I’m thinking Jackson is gonna be a big time goal scorer in this league before too long.

A very low key offseason comes to an end. A few meh trades are made, nothing too much changes.

1929-30 NHL Regular Season

Tiny Thompson returns to the Habs lineup after missing the whole 1928-29 season. George Hainsworth, who won the Vezina Trophy will be the backup for the season. Tough pill for him to swallow.

Welcome back!

Red Horner has returned after missing the 2nd half of last season with a ruptured collateral ligament. 4 games into this season, he suffered a head injury against the Canadiens. He’s expected to miss the remainder of the season. Horner has no luck at all since being traded to Chicago.

No luck at all for Horner

By new years, it’s evident that goal scoring is up significantly over the last 2 years. Goals per game stands at 4.98 so far, almost a full 1.5 more then last year. There is also 8 players getting more then a PPG.

I haven’t talked much about history and all time leaders yet, cuz I want to build up history a bit, but entering the 30’s, it’s probably time to recognize some things. Howie Morenz scored twice on January 2nd against Detroit. Those are career goals 128 and 129. Morenz passes Cy Denneny to become the all-time NHL leader in goals scored!!

This is Morenz’s 6th season in the NHL. At 27, he’s got a lot of time to add to that record. Denneny retired in 1927, with 127 goals in 260 games. Morenz has played 210 so far.

NHL's best goal scorer

No real playoff races this year. The Top and bottom classes seem really defined at the moment. The Good teams are really good, and the bad teams have little chance against them. Lets take a look at the final standings.

The Maroons lose two times all season. They are clearly the favourites to repeat as champions.

Montreal's Joe Primeau and Hooley Smith are running the league ragged!

Tiny Thompson did become the starter for the Habs in his comeback season, but he didn't have a good year. Montreal finished last in their division, with Thompson putting up a career worst performance. Here are his last two seasons played.

1930 NHL Playoffs

Round One

Both the Rangers and the Pirates put themselves in a huge hole after the first game. Both teams won game 2, but the deficit was so much, it didn’t matter. Toronto and Ottawa both advance in the total goal series.

Round Two

Both round 2 series are fairly close. The Maroons get a bit of a scare, but take the series in 4 games. Montreal allows just 6 goals in the 4 games, and that’s good enough to beat anyone!

Toronto and Ottawa go back and forth, before the Sens win the 5th and deciding game 2-1. This will be a rematch of last years cup final. The first time that’s happened since 1920.

The Maroons have been so good, I can’t see them losing this series. They better then everyone in the league. They don’t give up goals. They have an elite center. It’s just too much for Ottawa to overcome! One of Montreal’s two losses this year did come at the hands of the Senators.

Game 1

Ottawa spends much of game 1 short handed. They can’t compete with the Maroons if they don’t have enough players on the ice. Montreal scores early and often enough that this one was over quickly. Joe Primeau has himself a 4 point night. Montreal wins it 5-0.

Game 2

Ottawa’s Bill Carson got the Sens their first lead of the series. Montreal trailed until midway through the second when Joe Primeau scored his 2nd goal of the finals. Early in the third, Cooney Weiland scored what ended up being the Cup winning goal. Montreal wins game two, 2-1 and sweeps the series!
