1991 NHL Playoffs

Adams Division

Rematches!! Quebec does the exact same things to Montreal as they did last year. They win in 5! Boston also gets the same result against Hartford. Neal Broten’s late goal in game 6 wins the series for them! Wayne Gretzky did everything he could for Hartford. 18 points in 6 games. Still wasn’t enough. In round 2, the Bruins score 8 goals in the first game against Quebec. It all went downhill from there. In the Nordiques four straight victories, the Bruins are outscored 22-6. Quebec dominates to win in 5.

Patrick Division

The Flyers, now a playoff tested success, have an easy time, sweeping the Rangers. New Jersey ends the Caps return to the playoffs after 6 games. Dave Hannan scored in OT in game 6 to win the series! Curtis Joseph was amazing in round two against New Jersey. Only once did he allow more then 2 goals. He puts up a .924 sp in the series, leading the Flyers back to the Wales conference finals.

Norris Division

You can’t win a series when you only score 6 goals. That’s what the North Stars did to Chicago in their 5 game win. Mario Lemieux is held to just 3 goals and 0 assists in 6 games. Yes, that’s a 40 goal pace in the regular season, but it’s not enough for Detroit this year. Blues will take that, and ride it to a 6 games series win. Trailing 3 games to one, the North Stars stage a comeback by winning three straight against the Blues. They avoid the upset, and head back to the Campbell conference finals.

Smythe Division

In a series that featured mostly blowouts, the Oilers upset the top team in the Smythe division for a second straight year. After missing the playoffs a year ago, the Kings did not look rusty, making easy work of the Jets. Edmonton’s 7 game series must have drained them, cuz in game one of the 2nd round, they look empty, losing by 10 to LA. That game pretty much set the tone for the series. The Kings were never really in any trouble. They sweep the Oilers.

WALES CONFERENCE FINALS

Quebec has home ice advantage despite finishing 11 points behind the Flyers. For anyone that has the new game, is this still happening. I’m insulted that home ice hasn’t been fixed in FHM4 despite asking months ago. Anyway, the Flyers go all broad street bullies in game one. They take 41 minutes in penalties, and give Quebec 11 power plays. The Nords take 5 mins, and give the Flyers just one pp. Quebec scores 3 times with the man advantage. Doug Gilmour and Cam Neely combine for 10 points. Quebec takes advantage to win 7-0! Philly plays a much more disciplined game in the 2nd contest. Steve Yzerman opens the scoring, and the Flyers build a 3-1 lead heading into a wild third period. Tony Granato scores early in the period to make it 4-1. The Nords then score twice in 2 minutes cutting the lead to one. Bill Berg makes it 5-3 Philly. Cam Neely scores 20 seconds later cutting the lead to one again. Bob Kudelski scores in the empty Quebec net, trying to salt the game away, but Doug Gilmour scores with 20 seconds left making it close again. Alas, the Nords ran out of time. 6-5 Philly wins to tie the series!

Gilmour gets 5 points in game one!

Philly and Quebec play game three in the opposite manner of the wide open game 2. The teams combine for just 34 shots. Quebec amazingly, only gets 10 of them. The Flyers score twice in the first, and keep Quebec off the board until the final minutes of the game. Quebec gets one, but that’s it! 2-1 Flyers. Game three sees another great defensive effort by Philly, but they trail 1-0 after two periods. Quebec is again held to just 16 shots, and the teams combine for only 14 PIMS. Tony Granato ties it early in the third, and Steve Yzerman wins it late in the third. 2-1 Flyers!

Yzerman scores the game four winner!

Feeling desperate, the Nords start taking penalties looking to get any advantage they can in game 5. It results in nine Flyer powerplays, but the Flyers only take advantage once. Geoff Courtnall’s pp goal ties it in the first. Tied at 2 in the third, Joe Sacco converts a Steve Yzerman pass midway through the third, giving the Flyers the final lead of the series. Quebec couldn’t respond. 3-2 Philly, they return to the finals!

CAMPBELL CONFERENCE FINALS

Sergio Momesso and Doug Crossman get the North Stars started quick. Those two goals spark Minnesota to eventually take a 4-0 lead. LA scores twice in 20 seconds late in the 2nd cutting the lead in half, but that outburst is all the offense the Kings had. 4-2 Minnesota wins the opener. John Cullen scores twice in the first, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead after a period. LA scores 3 times in 8 minutes in the 2nd grabbing their first lead of the series. Sergei Fedorov puts up 3 points in game two, but Minnesota responds in the third. Vitali Karamnov scores twice. Joel Otto, Jeremy Roenick and Craig Wolanin all score in the 5 goal third period. 8-4 North Stars win.

Karamnov's two goals spark a huge third period in game two for Minnesota!

The Kings refuse to go down without a fight. After John Cullen opens the scoring of game 4, Tom Kurvers gets a point shot through to tie it. The 2nd period is a copy of the first. Doug Crossman gives the Stars a lead, but Dirk Graham ties it, tipping home a Reijo Ruotsalainen point shot on the pp. 2-2 after two. It stays that way until Bob Corkum’s 2nd with 5 mins left wins it for LA! 3-2 Kings. Down 2-1 late in the third, LA’s Brad Dalgarno ties the game with his first off the playoffs!! Unlikely hero forces overtime! The two teams play a full period without any winner emerging. 3 mins into the 2nd extra frame, Chris Chelios scores on the PP, giving Minnesota a 3-2 win.

Chelios is the game four hero!

LA, facing elimination, grab a lead in the first period of game two, and lead 2-1 after two. At that point, Minnesota decided they didn’t want to go back to California! They unleash a barrage of shots, and dominate the play in an effort to tie the game. It works! Benoit Brunet scores 7 mins in, sending the crowd into a fever pitch!! Minnesota outshoots the Kings 28-5 in the period, but with 4 mins remaining, on the pp, Tom Kurvers scores! John Garrett stops all but one of those Kings shots, and the LA prevailed 3-2!! Did LA steal the momentum after stealing game five? Dirk Graham gives them the first period lead of game six. Tapio Levo makes it 2-0 in the 2nd, and Bob Brooke makes it 3-0 in the third! Kings win it 3-1, sending the series to game 7!

John Garret's game 5 heroics have given the Kings a chance!

Danny Gare opens the scoring in game seven, scoring midway through the first. LA leads 1-0. 11 seconds later…ELEVEN…Danny Gare gets the puck deep on the forcheck, wraps it around, and stuffs the puck in the net!! 2-0 Kings! Before the end of the first, you guessed it, Danny Gare completes the natural hat trick!! Is Danny Gare gonna win this series for LA?!

Gare scores three times in the first!

It takes a while, but the North Stars finally get on the board late in the 2nd. Doug Crossman scores on the PP, making it 3-1 heading into the final period. Dino Ciccarelli scores early in the third, and we got a game! A scramble at the Kings goalline results in Dave Taylor shoving the tying goal into the net!! With 7 mins left, Minnesota has fought back to tie it at 3!

We need overtime to decide this. Both teams have blown leads. Minnesota blew a 3-1 series lead, and the Kings have blown a 3-0 game seven lead. The North Stars control the fourth period, getting chance after chance. The Kings get very little, but John Garrett turns every chance away, and we go to period five! Late in the period, Kelly Miller takes a roughing penalty. A minute later, Sergei Fedorov takes a high sticking penalty. Minnesota has a 2 man advantage! You can’t do that in double OT. Dino Ciccarelli scores with the advantage, ending it at the 38:45 mark of overtime! 4-3 Minnesota survives!

This is a rematch of last year. Philly vs. Minny. If Steve Yzerman can lead his squad to a 2nd straight cup, it would be time to declare him as the best player in the league. He’s got the scoring, he’s got the game score, he’s got the ratings, and he would have the cups! Minnesota has 26 year old rookie Wayne Cowley in net. He’s been solid, but he’s no Curtis Joseph, who is impressing me immensely. The North Stars have the edge on the blueline! Again, like last year, I think this is a very close series.

Game one sees no goals through one period, then no goals through two periods. The first goal is scored by Dino Ciccarelli early in the third. Randy Wood follows it up making it 2-0 North Stars. Philly’s Dave Barr scores on the power play, but that’s it. 2-1 Minnesota takes game one. Philly comes out quick, scoring twice in the first frame of game two. They score again in the 2nd, and extend the lead to 4 in the third. Minnesota scores late, but its obviously too late. 4-1 Flyers tie the series.

Joseph allows only 3 goals in the first two games!

Back in Bloomington for game three, the North Stars gives the home crowd something to cheer about early. Randy Wood and Brent Aston both score in the first. The crowd's jubilation does not last. Philly rattles off 4 straight goals in the 2nd, Steve Yzerman getting points on 3 of them. Flyers win game three, 4-2. Steve Yzerman continues his strong play into game 4, assisting on two first period Flyer’s goals. Philly makes it 3-0, but Minnesota does respond. They score two quick ones before the end of the 2nd, making it a one goal game. After the teams exchange goals, Steve Yzerman’s 14th puts the game out of reach. Philly wins 6-3, putting them a win away from glory.

Yzerman dominates games three and four!

Yzerman opens the scoring. He’s all over the scoreboard in this series. Philly leads 3-0 after two, but again, Minnesota comes back. Benoit Brunet and Dino Ciccarelli score, making it 3-2 in the third. On the PP though, it’s none other then Steve Yzerman, scoring the eventual winning goal. Flyers win game five, 4-3, and take the series in 5!!

1991 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are last season's skating leaders.

Here are the goalie leaders.

Here are the playoff scoring leaders.

Doug Gilmour wins his 2nd Hart Trophy, but loses the Stanley Cup to Steve Yzerman again. Yzerman wins his 2nd straight Conn Smythe. Alex Mogilny wins the Calder trophy with 78 points on the season.

Vancouver’s Gilbert Perreault has retired after a wonderful career which saw him finish third all time in scoring! His 1798 points is just 59 points behind the legendary Gordie Howe! Perreault played his whole career in Vancouver, and while his production dropped in his later years, he was still a point per game scorer until the age of 36. Here is his career stats. Vancouver will retire his number 11!

LA’s longtime goalie Billy Smith has hung em up. He is the all time leader in wins, with 580, and wins in a single season, 64! He’s also played the most games among goalies. Smith backstopped the Kings to the 1979 Stanley Cup. The Kings will retire the future HOFer’s number 35. Smith’s teammate John Garrett also retires, leaving a huge hole in the Kings net going forward. Garrett is number two on the list of all time wins. He spent most of his career in Toronto, where he helped the Leafs win 3 Stanley Cups after Terry Sawchuk’s retirement. Toronto will retire #1 in honour of Garrett! Here is a look at the top 10 career wins!

Washington’s Mike Bossy has retired. Bossy spent just over a decade scoring goals for the Caps. He finished his short career with 525 goals in 829 games. Bossy had just one season where he scored under 30 goals. His 2nd last, where he scored 29 goals in 62 games. I should note he got 50 assists that year, and 85 points this year. He had not slowed down at all! He leaves the game at age 34. Also being honoured this year is New Jersey’s Mark Howe. The son of Gordie, Mark did a great job carving out a career of his own. He started his career as a defenseman on the KC Scouts, moved to forward with the Colorado Rockies, and became the franchises all time leading scorer with the Devils. Three cities, one franchise! Noone will wear 21 in NJ again!

The NHL is expanding for the first time since the WHA folded. In real life, Minnesota was not doing well. The owners wanted to move to San Francisco. The NHL said no. Owners wanted that market for expansion. As a compromise, the NHL allowed the North Stars owners to head an expansion team from the area, with the caveat the new team would be able to draft players from the North Stars. The new team and Minnesota would then participate in an expansion draft. Pretty stupid if you ask me. I doubt this will be in the game, so I expect a normal expansion draft. I will make one change. The game has awarded the new team the first overall pick in the entry draft. In real life, they received the 2nd pick. I will edit them to number two. The San Jose Sharks will begin playing this year, here is their logo and uniforms along with the other changes around the league.

Here are the results of the expansion draft.

Not a lot there for the Sharks. They go young though, which is good. Someone here will develop into something.

OMG, the Sharks messed up something bad. This is a horrible start to their franchise if historical bias is a factor!! After the Islanders take Eric Lindros, the Sharks pass on Peter Forsberg and Scott Niedermayer to take JOHN MADDEN!!

Peter Forsberg, the highest potential player goes third! The Leafs get Scott Niedermayer, who was originally drafted with their pick that was traded for Tom Kurvers in real life. Many Leaf fans talk about this during down times, though I tend to explain that changing one aspect of history, like the Leafs keeping that pick, means history changes some, so you can’t say the Leafs should have had Scott Niedermayer. They could have had a chance at him. Ok, rant over…John Madden!!! Come on San Jose. You guys are in trouble! Here is a look at the top pick.

Here is a Tony Hand update

After playing 38 AHL games, and getting 40 points, Hand has called up to the Blackhawks in the 2nd half of the 89/90 season. He got 12 points in 20 games. Last year, he spent all year in Chicago, playing 80 games, and recording 25 points. He now goes to San Jose, where Hand will get some significant ice time. He’s got excellent offensive ratings, so it’ entirely possible Hand could be the team’s leading scorer. Watch out Wayne Gretzky!!

No HOF inductee’s this year. Well, there were actually 3, but I vet them, since I don’t agree that Terry O’Reilly and his 500 career points belongs in the HOF! No offense Terry! I’m exaggerating as O’Reilly had 4 straight 40 goal seasons. He was a very good player for a short window, and had a really solid career. But I think the game is to liberal with it’s HOF selections. I’ve probably vetoed 50-60 in our history!

Onto the regular season!

1991-92 NHL Season Preview

No, Montreal is not the favourite to win the cup. Come on….

Player Spotlight

All Islanders in this years player spotlight. First up, their top center, Mats Sundin. Mats hasn’t broken through on offense yet, but its only a matter of time. His ratings are now really good. He developed a lot last season!

Here is a look at Sundin’s right winger, Pavel Bure, who will enter his second season. He has also improved over the last year. They will be joined by Jaromir Jagr this year, who signed in the offseason. The Islanders will be fun to watch!

1991-92 NHL Regular Season

Mario Lemieux suffers an eye injury during preseason, which will cause him to miss 4-5 months!! The injury is listed as massive eye trauma. To suffer something like that, and return before the end of the season seems pretty good to me! Lemieux is lucky he can still see!! Anyway, this is a huge blow to the Red Wings, who we have seen, aren’t close to a good team without Super Mario. Just make the playoffs Detroit, just get there!

Detroit hopes Lemieux will return for the playoffs!

The NHL did not start well for San Jose. They allow two goals in the first minute of their first game. Criag Muni scores the first goal in Sharks history, but San Jose falls to the defending Smythe division champion Canucks. The Sharks are playing in the Smythe this year.

The worst team in the NHL just got crushed. Teemu Selanne suffers an elbow injury that should end his season. His 8 points in 12 games was leading the Sabres at the time of his injury. Buffalo, at the beginning of December, is 3-20-1, including a 14-0 loss to the Whalers. Buffalo has 5 star goalie Patrick Roy, 23 year old Vinny Damphousse, who hit 98 points in 1988. They have Pierre Turgeon, a very skilled top line center. They have Peter Forsberg and Ziggy Palfy in their prospect pool. They should not be THIS BAD!!! TRADE PATRICK ROY!!! With his 5 star ability, Roy has to have great value. He’s not working out. His play is has been awful. The loss of Selanne has ended any hopes at a unlikely playoff run. Get a ransom for Roy and develop these scorers!

Selanne's season ends early

Salaries have started getting much higher, so it’s time to look at the top 10 players in hockey, 1992 edition.

Only two defenseman on that list. It pays to be a forward in the NHL. Also, Joe Sakic is the youngest player on the list, at 22. Everyone else is in their prime pretty much, well, other then Trottier, who is finishing up a hall of fame career.

The youngsters on Long Island are in a battle for a playoff spot!! The Islanders currently trail the Rangers by 3 points for the final Patrick Division playoff spot, with about 20 games remaining. Mats Sundin has broken out, and leads the team with 67 points. Pavel Bure is right behind him with 66, and Jaromir Jagr has 23 goals in his rookie year. Even Eric Lindros has been promoted, and is playing on the fourth line. The Islanders may be for real very soon!

Sundin proving he's a number one center!

With the trade deadline passing, the season has just a few weeks left. Mario Lemieux still hasn’t returned to the lineup. He looks like he will be back right around April 20, which is when the playoffs are gonna begin. Detroit is safely in, mostly because the Leafs are terrible. So, whoever faces Detroit, there’s a chance a partially blind, yet rested Mario Lemieux will be in the lineup!

Final Standings

Quebec wins the President’s trophy, but can they finally get by Philly in the playoffs. Philly on the other hand, will have to go to battle with NJ to even get a shot at the Nordiques. The Devils look great!

Detroit finishes third. Lemieux returns for the final two games of the season, getting 3 points.

The Islanders can’t keep up with the Rangers and fall short of the postseason. Next year, you gotta think they get back in.

The Sabres are hockey’s worst team. Patrick Roy was good this year. Can’t keep blaming him when he put up a .897 save percentage. That’s great for the era. He faced 200 more shots then any other goalie. Despite the young talent they have, the team can’t play a lick of defense. Things won’t be changing there anytime soon.

Brett Hull leads the league in goals by a wide margin. He’s become the best goal scorer in hockey. He also wins his first scoring title!

Luc Robitaille also broke out. The 25 year old bested his career high by 18 points, hitting 50 goals for the first time.

Doug Gilmour get 90 assists for the third time in his career, and is now 17th all time in assists. Wayne Gretzky’s 122 points give him a career total of 1559, good for 7th all time. If healthy, he will challenge 4th place next year.

Tony Hand leads the Sharks in goals and assists, with 18 and 37! That’s not terrible since he’s playing with no one.

1992 NHL Playoffs

Adams Division

The same playoff matchups happen every year in the Adams. This is the 5th straight year with a first round of Quebec/Montreal and Boston/Hartford! Rivalries!! Quebec does a number on the Habs. In the final 3 games, they allow just one Montreal goal. Can’t win without scoring. Quebec takes it in 5. The Whalers didn’t get their first goal of the series until game three. Once they found the net though, they didn’t lose. Hartford wins in six. In the 2nd round, Wayne Gretzky had a goal and 5 assists in Hartford’s game three win over Quebec in round 2. That’s the only game Hartford scored more then twice, and their only win. Quebec wins the series in five!

Patrick Division

The Flyers sweep the Rangers for the 2nd straight year. In the last 2 years, over 8 playoff games, NY has managed to score just 10 goals against the Flyers. After losing the opening two game by a combined score of 19-4, everyone, including me, are very surprised to see the Penguins push the Devils to 7 games. In game 7, Pittsburgh, down by three, scored twice late in the third period to make things close, but just couldn’t pull off the upset. Devils win in seven! After four games of the division final, I though the Devils, who held a 3-1 lead, had this thing. They looked great in their 2 home wins, and need just one more W to get by the Flyers. Philly then won two straight elimination games to force a game seven. In game seven, the Devils fell behind and couldn’t catch up. NJ blows it. Philadelphia advances!

Norris Division

The Blues score 12 goals in their game 5 win over Chicago. That was one of their 4 wins in winning the series in six games. Mario Lemieux and his new linemate, Konstantin Shafranov combined for 16 points. The Red Wings are a different team with Lemieux in the lineup. They eliminate the two time defending Campbell Conference Champs, Minnesota, in 5 games. Detroit has a much tougher time in round 2. After winning the opener in St. Louis, the Blues take over, and win 4 in a row, including an 8-0 game five win. The Blues advance.

Smythe Division

Calgary returns to the playoffs after a one year absence, and give the first place Canucks all they could handle. Calgary jumps out to a 3-1 lead, only to blow it. Canucks win it in seven. The Jets, a team without much playoff success over the years, gets by the Kings in five games. Another 3-1 lead is squandered in the division final. The Jets lose the final three games, including a game 7 that went to double overtime. After 25 extra minutes, Mike Gartner scored the biggest goal of his career!

Wales Conference Finals

Looking for their third straight conference finals win over Quebec, the Flyers start out by scoring twice in 30 seconds. Before the period ends, Yuri Khmylev and Paul Coffey tie it. That’s some nice fightback for a team that is already facing a literal and mental giant. Mark Tinordi gives Quebec the lead after two, and Mark Lamb scores late in the third, salting away the game. 4-2 Quebec wins. Game two sees the Nordiques spend 27 minutes in the sin bin, while Philly spends 4. Huge advantage for the Flyers, and they take advantage. Joe Sacco scores on the PP in the 2nd, and James Patrick adds insurance in the 3rd. 2-0 Flyers win.

Curtis Joseph earns the game two shutout!

The Flyers didn’t allow a goal, but they sure had a tough time in a game they were on a man advantage so much. This Nordiques team might be able to climb the mountain. Game three is another low scoring affair. Steve Yzerman get his first of the series, but Stu Barnes responds right away, and Steven Rice gets the winner early in the third. 2-1 Quebec wins game three. Facing a little adversity, the Flyers come out flying in game four! Luciano Borsato scores short handed 2 mins in. They build a 3-1 lead. Then, i nthe final 30 seconds of the first, Geoff Courtnall and Tony Granato both score. Backbreakers. 5-1 after a period, and a 6-4 final. Philly ties the series.

Yzerman has just one goal in the series so far.

Back in Quebec City for game 5, the two teams play another defensive gem. Neither offense can can much in the way of chances. Steven Rice gets the first goal halfway through the 2nd. No more scoring occurs until the final 30 seconds of the game. Zdeno Ciger gets one by Flyers goalie Curtis Jospeh, and Quebec wins 2-0. Defense first!!! Game six is an absolute thrashing. Cam Neely scores 76 seconds in. Brent Gilchrist scores 14 seconds later and it’s 2-0 Nordiques after a period. Neely scores again in the 2nd, while teammate Doug Gilmour has 3 points in the period. It’s over. 8-0 Quebec wins, they finally beat the Flyers!

Campbell Conference Finals

If game one is any indication, the Canucks are in trouble. St. Louis leads 2-0 after the first, and score 4 times in the 2nd. The Blues 2nd line, consisting of Stan Smyl and Denis Savard combine for 8 points. 8-2 Blues win the opener. And the game crashed. So the Quebec Philly results are gone, and this series is gone. I don’t know who won this series though, so I’m gonna resim to get Quebec into the finals, and St. Louis winning game one. Depending on how long that takes, there may not be a write up for this series. A game crashing without me doing a damn thing usually makes me pretty angry.

Vancouver won my resimmed game one 7 straight times, so ya, no writeup for this series, I don’t have the patience…The series ends up going seven. Here are the results.

The Canucks make their first visit to the finals. They have a good offense, anok defense, but are great at special teams. They have three solid lines that can score, which is deeper then Quebec. Mike Liut started throughout the regular season, Mike Vernon started the first two rounds of the playoffs, and Liut started the last 6 games of the 3rd round. I have no idea who will play in the finals. The Nordiques also have great special teams, but are a much better defensive team. Doug Gilmour plays as good in his own zone as he does in the offensive zone. Their defensive core chips in more on offense too. Quebec’s the better team. They have more experience too...

Mario Lemieux really needs some help, I know they have Konstantinov, and Modano is developing but needs more around him, and to be injured less frequently.

Konstantinov has turned into a top line defenseman. He's good. Mike Modano just hit the 100 point mark, getting the ice time of a top line center. Other then that, there is very little talent on Detroit. They have not done a good job surrounding Lemieux with pieces that will help him. Only one of the top 6 wingers, Dmitri Khristich, has what I would call, a good offensive skill set.

The first goal of the finals comes off the stick of Cam Neely. He scores 3 minutes into the game. Ken Daneyko ties it a few minutes later, and Scott Mellanby gives Vancouver the lead after a period. In the 2nd, Shawn Chambers and Doug Gilmour score two minutes apart, taking the lead back for Quebec. Gilmour scores again in the third, in a 4-2 Quebec win. Game two sees the Canucks lead early on again. Mike Gartner’s first of the series makes it 2-0 in the 2nd. Late in the period, Zdeno Ciger cuts the lead in half, and Mark Lamb ties it in the third. Overtime. In OT, a Sean Chambers point shot gets through Mike Liut, winning it, 3-2, for Quebec! They lead the series 2-0.

Chambers goals gives Quebec a 2-0 series lead!

For the third straight game, the Canucks lead early, on a Darryl Shannon goal. For the third straight game, they can’t hold the lead, and trail 2-1 after the first. Zdeno Ciger and Brent Gilchrist have the Nordiques up by three early in the third. Two late goals by Craig Janney and Phil Bourque make it close, but not close enough. 4-3 Quebec wins. With just one win to go, the Nordiques took game four off. Vancouver scores first, and scores often. They outshoot Quebec 36-16. Jeff Brown is the first star with 3 points. The Canucks crush it, 8-1.

Jeff Brown gets 3 points in game five. Is it too little too late for Vancouver?

In game five, the Canucks take 6 seconds to score. Luc Robitaille has to have set a Stanley Cup record with the quickest opening goal. Vancouver leads 2-1 after a period. Mark Tinordi scores shorthanded to tie it in the 2nd. On the same pp, Scott Mellanby gets it back. 3-2 Canucks going into the third. Halfway through the third, Paul Coffey converts a Doug Gilmour pass to tie it. It’s scored short handed. Allowing two short handed goals to defenseman in an elimination game is horrible!! With 4 minutes remaining in the tie game, Quebec’s top players, Paul Coffey, and Doug Gilmour, set up Cam Neely, for the Stanley cup winning goal! 4-3 Nordiques win. They take the series in 5!

1992 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are the skating leaders for the season.

Here are the goalie leaders.

Here are the playoff scoring leaders.

Wayne Gretzky wins the Hart trophy. Dominik Hasek is a fully recognized star now, as he wins his 2nd Gardiner trophy.

Shawn Chambers is named a first team all star, but teammate, Paul Coffey is left off the team completely, despite winning the Pilote award!

Stan Smyl retires from the Blues. One of the best players in franchise history, Smyl made an immediate impact, scoring 35 goals in his rookie year, winning the Calder trophy. He rattled off off 12 straight 30 goal seasons and won the Conn Smythe in 1989, helping the Blues to their 2nd Stanley Cup. St. Louis’ all time leader in goals, assists and points. His number 12 is being retired.

Stan Smyl retires!

Denis Potvin began his career in California with the Seals. He helped them win the Stanley Cup, moved with them to Cleveland, and helped them reach another final. After the folding of the Barons, Potvin signed back in California, with the Kings, where he would play the rest of his career. His first year as a King resulted in another Stanley Cup!! He won the Pilote Trophy four times, and finished his career 5 points short of 1000. He retires at the age of 38. The Kings will retire his number 5.

Dennis Potvin retires!

Dave Taylor spent his entire 17 year career playing for the North Stars. He consistently took a back seat to other stars, but was just as important to the team. He scored 520 goals, and added another 72 in the playoffs. His 183 playoff points are 6th all time. He is the franchise’s all time leading scorer. Minnesota will retire his number 18.

The NHL has expanded again. This time, two new teams will enter the league. The Tampa Bay Lightning will join the Norris Division, while the Ottawa Senators join the Adams Division. In real life, these two teams held the top 2 spots in the amateur draft, as they do in game, so I will leave them there. Here is a look at their new logos and uniforms, as well as the other changes around the league.

Here is the results of the expansion draft.

Not a lot of talent available for these two new teams. Markus Ketterer is the top pick, and most talented player selected, but at 24, he’s never played an NHL game, so, maybe there is a reason for that! The Lightning and the Senators are gonna both be really bad.

Ketterer goes first in the expansion draft.

Both Tampa and Ottawa decide to build their franchises with defenseman in a lackluster NHL draft. The Lightning take Sergei Gonchar first overall. He’s got a a lot of offensive talent, but he’s not the player I would hope to start a franchise with. Brian Rafalski, taken 2nd, is similar to Gonchar, but a little more polished and ready to play.

The rest of the draft is kind of weak. Toronto picking Alexei Yashin has a chance to be a solid pick. He’s got the most offensive upside of anyone selected. Here’s a look at the first round.

Bobby Clarke and Butch Goring have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Both players paired with other dynamic players put put up over 1400 points a piece. Clarke of course, played with Marcel Dionne in Pittsburgh, while Goring played on a line with Guy Lafleur in LA. Both are more then deserving of their HOF inductions!

Quebec trades a first round pick to New Jersey for Grant Fuhr. Fuhr is a 2 star player who has had a very hard time sticking in the NHL with any regularity. At the end of preseason, the Nordiques promptly placed Fuhr on waivers. It wasn’t hard to see, with the eye test that Fuhr would not be one of the goalies to play in Quebec this year. Why would the CPU give up a first for a clearly inferior goalie. Teams seem to trade high draft picks for goalie depth a lot….

1992-92 NHL Season Preview

No, Montreal is not the favourite to win the Stanley Cup. I feel like this is déjà vu!

Player Spotlight

Joe Sakic is now 23, and he’s easily the top player in Pittsburgh. He’s developed into an excellent leader, who plays both ends of the ice. Here is a look at the Joe.

Brett Hull has been turning in some lethal seasons. He’s now 28 years old, and is about to become the Devils all time leading scorer. Here’s a look at his ratings.
