Looks like we sparked this team with the trades and a couple of callups and collected a 20-7 month. The boss is quite happy with the results and we didn't give up all of our farm to get here... tho some of the guys were quite painful to deal here an there. With the deadline passing... I tried to get a lefty reliever before the window closed but there were no clear cut deals that wouldn't have costed us at least Jungmann + another prospect.

We have been rather good bashing the ball over the wall this year with Vargas up leading the pack and our 3B platoon combining for 34HR between Reynolds/Moustakas and pinch hit appearances. While the lineup apart from 3B seems set for the next year, we have surplus of starting pitching right now and for next year with Jose Berrios getting close to the majors right now.

Some odd numbers here. Johnson hasn't gotten a decision in July despite a 1.74ERA while Jimmy Nelson was 4-0 with a 4.84ERA... slowly coming down to earth. Kevin Gausman was 3-1 2.48 in five starts since coming over and looks like a keeper... and we pay him to be one.

Down in the farm, almost everybody is doing fine. Yes, David Burkhalter's ERA is a bit ugly but he is doing this with a BABIP of .361 and a FIP of 4.04 which is... respectable for a 21 year old in A ball. Harvey struggles with movement but has some flashy stuff while Urias had 1.09ERA this month... and that calls for a move.

Berrios to AAA
Urias to AA
Time to move those prospects up a level... both are already rated 1.5-2* overall by most scouts.

Led by Jeffress, there is not alot to complain about... especially figuring in that most pieces in this pen were stolen together off waivers or on cheap free agent deals. If I were to complain about something... it would be Will Smith like last year, but with O'Flaherty out for the year and Rosscup not quite being to our scouts liking... we will wait it out for the next weeks. Nesbitt fitted in perfectly and is dirt cheap so there is a good chance Hatcher won't be on there when he returns late in the year.

Lucroy collecting his second career All-Star came as a surprise but is seems he has become hot at the right time. We will definitly pick up his 2017 team option for $5.25M... and will have to become creative after that year. Asking him about an extension beyond that... he said 10y/$132M...

Trading for Kennys Vargas NOW instead of playing a replacement level 1B till Greg Bird looks like a good decision for now as Bird isn't getting things done now and with Vargas, we snagged one of the best power hitters as for today. The other story obviously is Orlando Arcia. I hoped for great defense and a .250 bat. So far, I got both and he already has amassed 0.5WAR in 20 games... That's a impressive pace.

Last month, I said that Ryan Braun needs to pick up the slack....327-7-17 .989OPS is just that I would say. Arcia has been not that great since coming over but I trust our scouts here and if he breaks out Having Khris Davis on the bench means another pinch hit option if needed and did a decent job there. In the end, we loaded up our outfield with quality bats... and a young center fielder.

We took out one of the marquee pitchers fora 4.2IP 5R ride before dropping six more on their pen to start a 3-game set... which is nice.

News:
The White Sox won 10-2 against the Tigers, and a couple of batters had big days in the win. 2014 Rookie of the Year 1B Jose Abreu(29, 4.5*) enjoyed a 2-3 4R 3RBI 2BB 2HR day, adding to his .293-29-80 .908OPS year which is actually a small step back compared to 2015. The Dodgers also got the injury diagnosis on RHCL Kenley Jansen(28, 5*) today... and it is not pretty. He suffered a torn elbow ligament and won't play again for 10 month. He only appeared in five games last year due to an injury and was 0-2 31SV 3.05 44.1IP this year.

A couple of bullpen blowups by Jeremy Jeffress and Sergio Romo and a game winning RBI-single by Lucroy top 10th... entertaining game.

News:
The Mariners had to announce that team owner Howard Lincoln passed away due to illness recently. His son, Howard Lincoln Jr. will be his successor and the local media expects this to have a big influence in the team's future... as Junior has often criticised his father for spending too much money on a losing team. The Mariners are 49-63 so far.

August 9th

Milwaukee Brewers – San Francisco Giants 1-4

No offense and Corey Knebel imploded then gave up a 3-run homer to Cabrera that ended any dream of a victory in the 8th. Timmy went 8.1IP with 1ER and 10K today... meh.

News:
Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw(28, 5*) dominated the Cardinals today in a complete game 5-hitter, a 3-0 win over the Cardinals. Kershaw walked one and struck out six. He is one of only few hurlers that also won a MvP Award twice and could look for another one with a 12-4 2.34 172K in 22 starts.

Sanchez came out firing on all cylinders but wasn't able to make it a complete game after a HBP and a walk in the 9th.

News:
Padres SP Casey Kelly(26, 1.5*) 3-hit the Orioles today in a 3-0 win, allowing no walks and striking out five. Kelly was drafted by the Red Sox and was later part of the Adrian Gonzalez deal in 2010, This is his first full year as a starter and he is 5-13 4.71 89K in 23GS.

Brewers SP Aaron Sanchez(24, 4*) blanked the Giants in a 5-0 win, going 8.2IP 3H 0ER 1BB 7K. Sanchez, a 1st rounder in 2010, saw his first season as a starter cut short with a torn labrum last year, and was dealed over from Toronto for a package of players in July this year. Sanchez is 9-10 2.87 124K in 24 starts and 4-3 2.75 since coming over.

Athletics C Steven Vogt(31, 2*) mashed two homers today in a 6-3 win in Cincinnati, going 2-3 2R 4RBI BB 2HR. Vogt was drafted by the Rays in 2007 and came over in 2013, becoming the starting catcher quickly. He is batting .231-19-59 .737OPS in 100 games, easily exceeding his career high in HR by four already.

Gausman gave us the length to keep our pen alive another day while our offense chased Walker after 3.2IP.

News:
Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera(33, 5*) collected hit #2500 of his career in a 7-2 win over the Yankees. The 2x MvP, 6x Silver Slugger and 9x All-Star is a career .317/.396/.559 446HR 1534RBI hitter with 2501H and 1336 runs scored and is locked up in Detroit till 2024.

Cubs SP Jon Lester(32, 4.5*) added more misery for the Cardinals today, going 8.1IP 3H 0ER 0BB 3K in a 3-0 win. The 4x All-Star cashed in big after a successful career in Boston and is 15-4 2.53 149K in 25 starts.

Padres LF Matt Kemp(31, 4.5*) had a career night today in Cincinnati, going 5-6 3R 6RBI 2HR in a 10-5 win over the Reds. The 2x Gold Glover and Silver Slugger is wildly regarded as a disappointment in San Diego, mirroring his 2015 numbers with a .231-15-55 .674OPS campaign.

August 13th

Week 21: 3vs St. Louis Cardinals, 3@ Cincinnati Reds

August 22nd

W: Angel Nesbitt(3-0 2.20) L: Nick Hagadone(0-5 4.14) SV: Corey Knebel(6 4.25)
Gausman left trailing 0-4 but Lucroy, Arcia and Mous homered off Martinez to chase him in the 7th... and the Moose then hit a 2-run jack in the 8th to finish them off.

News:
Reds C Devin Mesoraco(28, 3.5*) helped his team win 13-4 against the D'backs, going 3-5 2R 4RBI DB 2HR. The reigning Silver Slugger at C is batting .271-21-61 .826OPS in 113 games and with that being better numbers than last year... is looking for a repeat.

Brewers 3B Mike Moustakas(27, 2*) hit the deciding blow in a 5-4 win over the Cardinals, going 2-4 2R 3RBI 2HR and hitting the game winning 2-run HR. Claimed off waivers last year, Moustakas is batting .262-19-49 .857OPS in 111 games and 75 starts as platoon 3B.

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 5-4
MIL SP Josh Johnson 7IP 7H 3R 3ER 3BB 2K

HR MIL: Mike Moustakas(20)
W: Nick Hagadone(1-5 4.05) L: Jeremy Jeffress(2-4 2.75) SV: Kelvin Herrera(25 1.50)
Johnson was left in an inning to long and gave up two runs in the 7th and Jeffress then blew the effort in the 9th.

News:
Braves SP Matt Wisler(23, 2.5/3.5*) pitched eight scoreless in a 1-0 win over the Mets today, going 8IP 6H 0ER 1BB 4K today. The former #40 prospect(2015) is in his first full year as a starter after coming out of the pen mostly last year, going 6-8 3.79 130K in 26 starts so far.

Dodgers SP Zach Greinke(32, 4.5*) pitched a beauty that his pen nearly blew, still beating the Marlins 3-2 while going 8IP 4H 0ER 1BB 4K for the day. Greinke had a couple of bad outings earlier this month and his ERA moved over three and he is 10-7 3.00 142K in 26G/25GS.

The Cubs will be without their star 3B Kris Bryant(24, 5*) for basically the rest of the season due to a fractured finger. Last year's All-Star has been struggling in his sophomore year, batting .232-15-49 .723OPS in 104 games prior to the injury.

August 24th

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 1-7
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 8IP 7H 1R 1ER 2BB 7K, 0-2 R BB

HR STL: Matt Carpenter(8)
HR MIL: Luis Sardinas(6), Kennys Vargas(37)
W: Tyler Thornburg(10-9 3.75) L: Michael Wacha(10-10 3.74)
A rare 3-run blast by Sardinas and a solo shot by Vargas made it 4-0 in the 3rd inning and we never let up on both sides of the ball.

News:
Padres SP R.A. Dickey(41, 0.5*) had everything going today and collected a complete game 5-1 win over the Pirates, going 9IP 5H 1ER BB 8K. The knuckleballer won the 2012 Cy Young Award but his star has been falling since then and he had to wait till May to get picked up. For 2016, he is 3-6 3.68 49K in 20G and 9 starts.

Blue Jays SP Zach McAllister(28, 1*) also went the distance in a 5-1 win over the Yankees, going 9IP 4H 1ER 1BB 8K. Acquired from the Indians in May 2015 for a couple of low level prospects, McAllister is 7-11 3.81 101K in 25G/24GS for the 61-67 Blue Jays.

Rockies SP Justin Masterson(31, 2.5*) pitched eight innings of 1-hit ball in a 1-0 win over the Phillies, going 8IP 1H 0ER 2BB 8K. Masterson mostly relies on his sinker and his movement to generate grounders, but he hasn't been really successful since the 2013 season, posting a 8-10 4.48 107K year in 26 starts on a 1y-deal.

August 25th
offday

News:
Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood(26, 0.5/1.5*) followed up Masterson's game with a complete game 2-hitter, beating the Phillies 4-0 while allowing 2H 2BB 6K. This was only his third start since the start of 2015 as he was relegated to the pen, and he is 6-3 5.20 52K in 83IP this year.

Pirates SP Jordan Jankowski(27, 3*) rolled over the Giants in a 4-0 today, going 8IP 3H 0ER 0BB 4K. Jankowski, nicknamed 'J.J.' for obvious reasons, came over from the Astros in May and has been rock solid since then, going 7-4 3.98 78K in 21G/18GS.

Reds C Devin Mesoraco(28, 3.5*) continues to roll this week, going 3-5 2R 5RBI 2HR in a 9-8 win over the Diamondbacks, clinching a 3-1 series win. Locked up till 2018, the 3x All-Star is batting .273-23-66 .841OPS in 115 games now.

Despite Knebel's best effort to sabotage Nelson's great outing, we brought this one home... after Jeffress came in to get the final out.

News:
Cubs SP Johnny Cueto(30, 3.5*) collected a complete game 8-1 win over the Padres, going 9IP 4H 1ER 0BB 4K. Signed to a 5y/$64.7M deal, the 2014 All-Star is only 8-14 4.41 120K in 25 games and wildly regarded as a disappointment.

Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson(27, 2.5*) continued his magic in a 5-2 win over the Reds, going 8iP 3H 0ER 4BB 8K and collecting another W. Nelson was a 2nd rounder in 2010 and after struggling to get his ERA under 4.50 the last two years, he started 13-0 into the season and is 14-3 2.47 121K in 25 starts, good for 2.9WAR.

Johnson pitched a decent game and the bats clobbered Bailey and their pen into submission for a series win.

News:
Tigers SP Drew VerHagen(25, 3.5*) collected a complete game 5-hitter, allowing 2BB 4K in a 9-0 win over the Mets. The young right hander is having a decent 8-8 3.96 85K year in 26 starts and scouts see potential for a #3 starter in him.

The Reds took a huge blow today... as 1B Joey Votto(32, 4.5*), who left a game against the D'backs earlier this week, was diagnosed with a torn PCL an will be out for 9-10 months. Votto was batting for a hot .309-21-72 .947OPS while being on pace for the highest WAR since his MvP season.

We gave a 2-0 lead to Jeremy Jeffress... and left the 9th 2-2 before Polanco doubled and Josh E. Bell singled to walk-off in the 13th.

News:
Indians SP Garrett Richards(28, 4.5*) collected a 3-0 win over the Braves in Atlanta, pitching eight scoreless with 3H 1BB 6K. He netted his first All-Star nomination this year, posting a 11-7 2.35 161K season in 27 starts.

Phillies CF Colby Rasmus(30, 4*) homered twice off Matt Harvey in a 8-3 win over the Mets, going 2-34R 5RBI 2BB 2HR. Rasmus signed a 4y/$29.4M deal this offseason after a bad year in Houston... and his 2016 is only a bit better as he is batting .208-24-68 .679OPS in 124 games.

News:
Cubs SP Johnny Cueto(30, 3.5*) got another good outing to go, beating the Dodgers 2-0 while pitching eight scoreless with 4H 2BB 1K. That got Cueto's season up to 9-14 4.20 121K in 26 starts and equaled his win total from last year.

Athletics RF Steven Piscotty(25, 4*) collected five hits today in a 5-2 win over the Tigers, scoring once, driving in three and collecting a home run. Piscotty is on fire since joining Oakland for AL Cy Young winner Chris Bassitt, batting .325-7-30 .926OPS in 50 games.

With 30 games to go, we are in a comfortable position on top of the NL Central, a nine game lead. However, we will play four more against the Pirates and a total of seven games against the Cubs, both teams that are still in expanded striking distance. To keep this going, we called up a bunch of relievers and Taylor Jungmann to bolster our pitching staff... while our position players are more or less set... I realized just now that our 40-man is a bit shallow here... injuries could hurt us.

Staying positive... we are only 0.5G behind the Dodgers for the best record in the NL... and in baseball. With Kershaw, Brett Anderson and Kenley Jansen on the DL, they have to use veteran lefty Sean Marshall as closer, and Iglesias(#3), Billingsley(#4) and Tom Koehler(#5) behind Greinke and Ryu in the rotation.

Rotation:
NameAgeLeagueW-LERAGWHIPK/9WARStatus
Kevin Gausman(R)25ML12-103.2629GS1.177.13.1(MIL/BAL)

Gausman was hit around a bit and had a 5.03ERA last month, but for the most part, the rotation has been rock solid and we are really happy with Jimmy Nelson and Tyler Thornburg having good years . In AAA, Wily Peralta is 3-5 2.97 62K in 12 starts since we acquired Gausman... but I decided that we don't want to mix around the rotation that got us here... he will work with Berrios and Frias to finish a .515 win pct. season down there.

Knebel is having tons of problems these days, posting a 9.26ERA in August in 11.2IP and Ronnie keeps using him in high leverage situations... as he also amassed three saves. We brought up a bunch of arms and may try out Rosscup a bit more to challenge Will Smith. Jungmann(see SP) will get a shot or two and Chris Hatcher will return in a couple of weeks... however without rehab assigment... I'd rather have our normal group out there.

I stopped mulling about Vargas a while ago, but in other news, Greg Bird won AAA Player of the Month, batting .288-5-13 .873OPS in August. In the majors, our 3B platoon has cooled off a bit since the trade deadline and Mark Reynolds called twice... about an extension. He wants 3y and $8.7M annual... at age 33... that is not going to happen. Mr. Arcia(the younger one) continues to impress with a OPS+ of 109... but surprisingly not quite bringing the defense.

Braun is really going off now that he has been healthy for more than two months, batting over .320 since returning from his ankle injury in July . Arcia(the older one) is still not really clicking here but I will simply leave him there... e.g. say Ron he should do nothing. Since Khris Davis is coming off the bench, he is batting .406... that is a weapon we have right there.

2016 Week 23

Week 23: 3vs Pittsburgh Pirates, 3@ Chicago Cubs

September 5th

A six game week against division rivals in range... time to shine.

While it was Oswaldo Arcia who collected the game winning sac... it was Thorny who earned this one with seven great innings of work.

News:
Indians SP Trevor Bauer(25, 4*) brought home a complete game win, 7-1 versus Baltimore, with a 9IP 3H 1ER 0BB 7K showing at Progressive Field. Acquired in 2012 in a three team deal with ARI and CIN, Bauer is having his best MLB season, going 10-11 3.81 157K in 28 starts.

Twins SP Trevor May(26, 0.5* HS, 0.5/1* OSA) pitched a hell of a game in a 5-0 win over the Astros, missing a 3-hitter by one out with a 8.2IP 3H 0ER 3BB 6K performance. May was a 4th rounder in 2008 by the Phillies and later part of the Revere/Worley deal in 2012. In 14 starts, the right hander is 5-5 4.02 67K.

September 6th

Gausman pitched a hell of a game but we couldn't rally in time to win this one.

News:
Royals SP Brandon Finnegan(23, 1.5/2.5*) collected a impressive 1-0 win over the Mariners, allowing no runs through 8.2IP with 3H 1BB 5K. Finnegan got into the spotlight as surprising bullpen part of the Royals 2014 run for the AL Crown, but is only 8-7 4.82 66K in 20 starts this year.

Athletics SP Jesse Chavez(33, 2*) cut his team's magic number to 16 with 8.2IP scoreless in a 6-0 win over the Rangers, allowing six knocks, three walks while striking out eight. For the first time in four years in Oakland, he is a full time starter, posting a 10-8 3.31 124K record in 28 starts.

Dodgers SS Corey Seager(22, 4.5/5*) saw a impressive 21-game hitting streak end in a 4-3 win over the Rockies. After making his debut last year and batted .368 in the playoffs... for a World Series winning team, he is batting .325-11-64 .893OPS in 134 games in his first full year.

The Pirates dropped a four-spot on Johnson's head in the 2nd, we answered back with four runs in the 4th... and Oswaldo Arcia once again drove in the winning run in the 7th with a double down the line in right.

News:
Angels SP Cam Bedrosian(24, 4.5*) kept his team in the Wild Card race in a 2-0 win over Tampa Bay, going 8IP 3H 0ER 0BB 7K. The young right-hander is having a breakout season, going 13-10 3.36 149K in 30 starts... while walking 68 batters.

News:
Red Sox C Blake Swihart(24, 5*) was on fire today and swatted three home runs in a 13-12 loss at Yankee Stadium, going 4-6 3R 4RBI 3HR. Already a 2x All-Star, Swihart is batting .340-16-73 .960OPS in 124 games and underway to a batting title.

The Brewers got some bad news today... as AAA SP Wily Peralta(27, 2.5*) suffered a torn flexor tendon(elbow) and will be out of commission for 11 months. The right hander struggled this year with a 5-7 record and a 5.07ERA in 17 starts.

Well... that's a pitcher underway to NL Cy Young consideration... and I'm not talking about Nelson.

News:
Cubs SP Jon Lester(32, 4.5*) pitched a complete game 5-hitter in a 7-0 win over the NL Central leading Brewers, allowing only one free pass while striking out seven. Lester is in the second year of a 7y/$140M contract, cruising along with a 17-5 2.39 177K year in 30 starts.

Mets SP Zack Wheeler(26, 4*) also brought home a 4-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Indians in interleague play, walking one and whiffing four. This is already his second shutout of the year and he is underway to a 9-13 3.79 168K year in 30 starts.

Rockies SP Christian Bergman(28, 2*) dominated the Padres completely in a 3-0 win, pitching a six-hitter with one walk and 3K today. The right-handed control pitcher just made his fifth start and was hammered in his first four, posting a 2-3 7.16 16K year overall.

September 10th
Rained out and resheduled to a double header tomorrow... not the end of the world as we have an offday on Monday anyways.

News:
Rays OF Steven Souza(27, 3.5*) had some fun visiting Seattle today... as his team won 10-4 and he drove in five in a 3-4 night with a 2-run home run. Souza, a third rounder by the Nats in 2007, bacame part of the Myers/Padres trade in 2014 after making his MLB debut that year. In his second year in St. Petersburg, the right-handed batter is .252-22-88 .743OPS in 137 games.

It was never as close as it felt in the end... and we brought home the division for the first time since 2011 and our fifth playoff berth in franchise history. We will face the Nationals in the NLDS... stay tuned for that. Our team went on to tread water since the calendar turned over to September... hopefully we can turn things around in the playoffs a bit... especially our pen is a mighty problem...

Our division posed three playoff teams as Chicago and Cincinnati will face each other in the Wild Card game tomorrow with the Reds going on a eight game winning streak to end the regular season. The surprise of the season in the AL have been the A's with a 90-win season. However, they have Matt Olson, Jacob deGrom and Stephen Piscotty out for the season. Also, a tie-breaker was needed to bring the Mariners to the AL Wild Card... interesting playoffs coming up.

We will carry all of our five starters... as I screwed up our 40-man and we don't have additional bats available anyways. Gausman, Sanchez and Johnson are #1-#3 out there for a playoff series with Nelson #4 if needed. I think this is a pretty good group with a couple of youngsters and a veteran that should be as good as anybodies. Especially now that Gausman has added some zip on his fastball... up to 96-98mph says Logan.

Our infield has been impressive with Kennys Vargas winning the NL home run crown and Moose and Reynolds were doing quite fine at third... quite... The middle of the infield is highly experimental with Arcia and Sardinas and for those two young guns... the playoffs could go either way.

Our outfield has been sensational to finish the season as Braun got up to hit over .300 and Oswaldo Arcia doubled his WAR after September 1st from 1.2 to 2.4. Tyrone Taylor has been vastly impressive defensively this year, being third in ZR despite playing in 130 games. Davis cooled off significantly since having to pinch hit alot... hopefully he can find his mojo.

2016 NLDS Game 1

NL Wild Card:
Cincinnati Reds – Chicago Cubs 5-4
Cincinnati advances to NLDS

AL Wild Card:
Seattle Mariners – Boston Red Sox 3-12
Boston advances to ALDS

-----

The Washington Nationals:

Washington now has won the NL East three years in a row but they fell down to 84-78 this year from winning 97 games in 2015... and they are in trouble. SP Stephen Strasburg(28, 5*, 10-3 2.23 173K 24GS) is out for the year with a torn triceps... and to make things worse, RF Bryce Harper(23, 4.5/5*, .305-17-62 .875OPS 131G) strained an oblique and will miss the NLDS. Also out is RHCL Addison Reed(27, 4.5*, 5-8 26SV 3.40 55.2IP) is out for the year aswell.

They will sent out royally paid SP Max Scherzer(32, 4.5*, 10-11 2.94 246K), the 2013 AL Cy Young winner, as their ace. SP Jordan Zimmerman(30, 4*, 17-9 2.56 192K 34GS) will be their number two and surprisingly, rookie SP Joe Ross(23, 3.5/4*, 1-4 4.00 30K 6GS) will start in game three. The rotation was 2nd in the NL with a 3.24ERA... but will miss Strasburg... and they have a 3.96ERA pen behind them with newly named RHCL Drew Storen(29, 4*, 4-2 8SV 2.24 64.1IP) as best arm available.

Young CF Michael A. Taylor(25, 4/4.5*, .202-9-34 .588OPS 111G) will be asked to bat leadoff... don't ask me why I don't now. The middle of their order will feature 3B Anthony Rendon(26, 4*, .297-16-81 .829OPS), LF Evan Gattis(30, 3*, .236-35-89 .728OPS) and veteran 1B Ryan Zimmerman(32, 2*, .265-17-61 .764OPS) for the 10th best offense in the NL... and that was WITH Harper healthy.

Chief of this weakened group still is manager Matt Williams, who made himself a name with a 277-209 record in three years and two Manager of the Year Awards in 2014 & 2015. He is not regarded as a real difference maker and a pretty temperamental guy on the field... and tends to get thrown out from time to time.

National League Division Series Game 1:
8th October 2016
Washington Nationals - Milwaukee Brewers @Miller Park

WSH: SP Max Scherzer(R, 10-11 2.94)
MIL: SP Kevin Gausman(R, 14-12 2.97)

Gausman fanned two to start the game... and the crowd really got into it when Bernie Brewer went down the slope in a blink of an eye on a leadoff Sardinas jack bottom 1st. Kevin then struck out the side to make it 5K for six outs... and he played a huge role in our half of the 2nd aswell. Moose walked to start the frame and after Lucroy and Tyrone Taylor flew out softly... Orlando Arcia dumped a clean single into the gap in right... which brought up the same Kevin Gausman with two outs.

Instead of rolling over to die, Gausman took a 1-1 heater... lashed to left... BASE HIT 2-0 MIL! That score held for a while with Gausman being absolutely dominating and by the end of the 7th... Gausman had thrown 86 pitches, struck out 12... and went on to falter a bit. Veteran Ian Desmond dumped a 1-out single into left and surprisingly tagged up to make it to second on a deep Paredes drive. It was Thomas Tellis who a.) drove in their first run and b.) made the final out of the game, getting thrown out at second base trying to make it a double.

By the bottom 8th, Scherzer was gone and Aaron Barrett was in to face the top of our order. Sardinas swung through a heater for strike three, but Ryan Braun, one of only two leftovers from the 2011 lineup, grounded one through the hole in right for a base hit. Our favorite masher Kennys Vargas ambushed a 2-2 heater... to deep center... OVER TAYLOR AND OFF THE WALL... 3-1 MIL! Craig Stammen came in to keep it close... walked Arcia on five pitches... and got out of it with a couple of grounders.

We rolled Gausman back out there as nobody trusts Jeffress these days... and after Michael A. Taylor popped out, Danny Murphy lined out to left... and Rendon whiffed for #13... the Brewers took a 1-0 series lead on a complete game by Kevin Gausman!

2016 NLDS Game 2

National League Division Series Game 2:
9th October 2016
Washington Nationals - Milwaukee Brewers @Miller Park

WSH: SP Jordan Zimmerman(R, 17-9 2.41)
MIL: SP Josh Johnson(R, 12-7 3.34)

Ronnie decided to go with the veteran for game two... and a win would play big here. However, Michael A. Taylor took a page out of yesterday's Brewers playbook and hit a mammoth 430ft homer to dead center to leadoff the game and while Johnson recovered to end the 1st without more damage, it was 1-0 WSH. A 2-out Vargas double had no effect in the bottom half and after Moose got a leadoff single in the 2nd... we lined out three times to end the frame. Both teams didn't get real contact until the 4th... when Moose took a Tiger Woods like swing on a low heater... that found the right field bleachers to tie the game at one!

A Paredes single and a bunt got the Nats threatening... and we walked Taylor intentionally to get to Murphy. Johnson got the grounder we wanted... just we couldn't turn two and only got the force at second. Rendon stepped on... and payed for being overeager... and struck out swinging to end the frame. A huge double play after a Gattis double and a intentional walk got Johnson out of the 6th... but it was painfully clear that this was it for the veteran.

Thorny spawned on the mound and got a scoreless 7th... but did get wacked around on a couple of singles by Rendon and Telis. We went with our best reliever in Shawn Kelley with two on and nobody out... and while he struck out Zimmerman... Ramos grounded one past everybody into center... Rendon running... still running... Taylor throws... play at the plate... RENDON IS OUT AT THE PLATE!!!! Still two on, two down... tied game at 1. Desmond was the next guy up and Kelly fired... four balls to load the bases.

Next up... speedy Jimmy Paredes... and he sunk this ship with a grounder past Sardinas that went into right... and scored two for a 3-1 WSH lead. A pinch-hit single by Schafer had no effect... and after Knebel wobbled through the top 9th... it was Drew Storen on to close it... and while we got a runner on... we went down flailing anyways.

2016 NLDS Game 3

National League Division Series Game 3:
11th October 2016
Milwaukee Brewers - Washington Nationals @Nationals Park

MIL: SP Aaron Sanchez(R, 11-11 2.86)
WSH: SP Joe Ross(R, 1-4 4.00)

The Nats fans were a bit shellshocked when Braun hit a deep liner to left center that cleared the fence for a 1-0 Brewers lead, but a first pitch single by Taylor and a Rendon walk quickly got them back into it. Big hulking Evan Gattis drove one to deep right... that was caught by Braun. Next up was veteran Ryan Zimmerman... who grounded to Vargas for a 3-1 groundout. Ross came out to strike out the side in the 2nd with a Taylor single inbetween... and was able to avoid a double play while batting with two on and one out in the 2nd... moving Desmond and Paredes into scoring position.

After some shotty pitching... Sanchez broke against Michael A. Taylor, who hit a shot past Arcia into left for a 2-run single. A Rendon triple came around to score in the 3rd... and it was crystal clear that Sanchez wasn't up to the task today. Our offense was limited to some two-out baserunners that got routinely stranded by Ross... and while Sanchez stayed out of trouble and gave us six innings of three run ball... he left trailing 3-1.

Sardinas and Taylor reached in the 7th and 8th... but remained without effect and it was Drew Storen on to save it for the Nats in game three. To start the 9th... Oswaldo Arcia chipped one into right... that died for a base hit before Paredes could get there. Moose saw five heaters... and fanned... and pinch hitting Logan Schafer... resulted in the game ending double play.

2016 NLDS Game 4

National League Division Series Game 4:
12th October 2016
Milwaukee Brewers - Washington Nationals @Nationals Park

MIL: SP Kevin Gausman(R, 1-0 1.00)
WSH: SP Max Scherzer(R, 0-1 2.57)

Jimmy Nelson or Gausman on four days rest... not that we really considered to not let the game 1 rematch happen again. This time however, the Nationals got some hard contact to go early as nobody got to another Michael A. Taylor leadoff hit, a double... and it was Gattis whose long drive ultimately collected the first run of the ballgame on a sac. A similar situation made it 2-0 with Murphy at third and Zimmerman at the plate... and with Scherzer hurling three no-hit innings to start the game... Brewers fans got desperate already.

Max collected five K's in a row to get through the 4th and 5th and after fanning Orlando Arcia to start the 6th... he surprisingly walked Gausman... and a tricky liner over the glove of Murphy became our first hit of the ballgame... a Sardinas double. Taking a page out of Washington's playbook... Braun collected the sac... and it was a 1-run game. After a bad sequence of pitches... the Nats scored their third run on a tired Gausman(blame our manager, Mr. Ron Roenicke) with pinch hitter Tomas Telis bringing home Wilson Ramos.

One of our hottest hitters this series in Oswaldo Arcia greeted new hurler Craig Stammen with a double and a one out single by Lucroy that dropped into left got us another chance with runners at the corners... that was criminally wasted on a couple of K's... and that was our last rally in this game, series and season.

2016 NLDS & Owner Talk

Office of the Owner
October 14th, 2016

While everybody in the organisation pretty much had a hangover from getting eliminated two days ago, that didn't save me from having a little chat with our owner about the season. He flat out told me that he is very happy with the team making the playoffs and with the attendance per game going up by almost 9000 fans, I should expect a raise in budget room.

Talking about money, he was very pleased with us generating profit like he wanted us to do, aswell with our offensive output and with us making the playoffs without a big rebuild and with longtime Brewers like Lucroy and Braun. However, Attanasio clearly stated that he want's a repeat of the playoff berth next year, and a team that can win a World Series till 2021.

I told him(because I want to keep my job) that this is certainly doable with the group we have in the majors and minors right now, but there is still alot of work to do. " We can not lose 3-1 three games in a row in a playoff series. That means, we need to focus on offense more... and I see shortstop as a weakness", was all he said.

I remarked that with Arcia and Jorge Mateo, we have a couple of great young shortstops in the organisaion, and we should let them develop... Mark wasn't thrilled by that answer and continued the questioning... and asked about the bullpen. I explained him that his front office has taken a good long look at our group and we will try to resign Kelley and Logan ASAP for 2-3 years to keep some of it together... and that "we can all agree tho that Jeremy Jeffress will not be our closer come 2017 either because we acquire another one... or because a guy like Kelley gets that job."

"And what about Matt Reynolds?" - "Reynolds is 33-years old and is a specialist against LHP. Paying him a 3y/18M deal with that skillset at that age is a bad idea. That being said, we have no real fitting replacement. A 1y/$6M deal would be nice and I'm pretty sure he would accept that one."

"Speaking of trades, do you have something in mind?" - "Yes, we have some starting pitching that I would make available in trades, like Taylor Jungmann to be frank. We may end up non-tendering Wily Peralta in arbitration aswell... paying him $3M for not playing is not worth it, there is not alot of upside and we may have Berrios and maybe even Urias ready for MLB play as soon as next spring. A catcher to replace Lucroy after next year would be nice."

He cited the wisdom of 'you can never have enough pitching', but reluctantly told me to go ahead and 'bring this team to the next level and a World Series'... so, no pressure huh?

The Dodgers were able to defend their World Series with a awfully close 4-3 series win over the Billy Beane's Oakland A's. LA was behind 3-2 in the series... but some flashy pitching by Chad Billingsley and Zach Greinke saw them win two in a row at home to come back to win the series.

The fact that the Dodgers did this without ace SP Clayton Kershaw and pen aces LHRP Paco Rodriguez and RHCL Kenley Jansen, who are all out for 4-7 more month, makes this win even more impressive.

World Series MvP went to 22-year old SS Corey Seager, who went 9-24 HR 3RBI in the series with a 1.121OPS. Also big props to SP Zach Greinke, who started in three games, going 2-1 2.74 13K and 2-5 with a solo homer in game seven.

During October play, the Brewers ironed out a couple of extensions with a couple of bullpen arms. LHRP Boone Logan(32, 4*) will stay with the team on a 2y/9M deal. Acquired from the Rockies last season, Logan had a good 5-5 3SV 2.28ERA 0.8WAR year in 55.1IP. Also resigned was RHRP Shawn Kelley(32, 4.5*), who agreed to a 2y/8M contract, with a 5-2 2SV 1.97ERA year in 68.2IP and a 1.8WAR being the main reason. Asked about those extensions, K.C. Martin told the media that 'veteran relievers like this are important pieces for a team, and we are happy to keep them around for two more years'.

2016 First Day of the Offseason

Bureau of the GM
November 2nd 2016

To do list:
  • Check for open coaching positions
  • Make decisions on team options
  • Arbitration decisions
  • Make decisions about free agents/minor league free agents
  • Take a look at the owner goals
  • Take a look at the new budget

1.Check for open coaching positions
None, we will go with the same group that brought us to the NLDS in 2016. And for the minors, that's Kevin Towers' job anyways-

2. Make decisions on team options
C Jonathan Lucroy(30, 3*) .271-11-63 .717OPS 145G 3.5WAR
$95.25M Team Option: ACCEPTED
No reason to let him go here. His contract demands going forward are a reason and we will have to cope with this rather sooner than later

3. Arbitration decisions
We have a ton of arbitration cases as usual.

RHP Juan Nicasio(30, 1.5* as SP, 3.5* as RP) MLB stats: 7-4 3SV 3.31 45G/2GS 68IP 7.3K/9 0.9WAR
Estimate: $3M, non tendered for now
We have better options for the rotation, and cheaper options for the pen... and we will look to flip him before the arbitration hearings.

RHSP Wily Peralta(27, 2.5*) MLB stats: 5-7 5.04 17GS 100IP 7.3K/9 1.4WAR
Estimate: $3.8M, submitted a $2.7M team offer in arbitration
Kevin talked me into this... as he thinks Peralta has some value going forward... at least some trade value when healthy... and so, we offered the lowest amout possible... as he will be out for 9 more month.

RHSP Tyler Thornburg(28, 1.5/2*) MLB stats: 1-12 3.24 31GS 188.2IP 7.4K/9 2.2WAR
Estimate: $2.4M, was offered a 1y/$2.3M extension
Super 2 eligible, which is no surprise after two seasons with an ERA under 3.50. Control is fringe, but the stuff is great... worth keeping for at least another year.

RHRP Chris Hatcher(31, 2.5*) MLB stats: 0-0 2SV 1.73 28G 26IP 7.6K/9 0.4WAR
Estimate: $1M, was offered a 1y/$970k extension
Was pretty good in limited time and is rather cheap for a 31-year old. Has no options left unfortunately.

LHRP Will Smith(27, 3*) MLB stats: 5-2 2SV 2.96 57G 51.2IP 7.5K/9 0.2WAR
Estimate: $900k, was offered a 1y/$880k extension
Keeps coming back. Logan still likes him and once again, he is a cheap lefty.

RHCL Jeremy Jeffress(29, 4*) MLB stats: 2-7 38SV 3.73 76G 72.1IP 11.3K/9 1.2WAR
Estimate: $1.4M, was offered a 1y/$1.35M extension
Saw his ERA baloon late in the year, may be a good setup man, but has thrown his last pitch as a closer here. Too inconsistant to keep that role.

C Martin Maldonado(28, 1.5*) MLB stats: .204/.253/.355 42G 2HR 8RBI 0.4WAR
Estimate: $1.6M, non tendered for now
Has been a great backup catcher, but $1.6M is a bit too high for the production he generates... We may end up resigning him cheaper if we wait, or use Fed-Ex next year.

3B Mike Moustakas(28, 1.5* HS, 2* OSA) MLB stats: .252/.318/.497 147G/106GS 26HR 66RBI 3.6WAR
Estimate: $3.2M, offered a 1y/$3.1M extension.
We are more than willing to bring him back together with Reynolds to keep that 3B platoon intact. Logan isn't exactly thrilled by his skills... but a 3.6WAR player is worth way more on the free agent market.

LF Khris Davis(28, 2.5/3*) MLB stats: .266/.325/.475 139G/89GS 17HR 50RBI 2.3WAR
Estimate: $2.8M, offered a 1y/$2.7M extension.
Was not great in a pinch-hit role, but should provide a potent bat off the bench once he has adapted to that role.

CF Logan Schafer(30, 2*) MLB stats: .223/.287/.271 69G/39GS 0HR 14RBI 0.1WAR
Estimate: $850k, offered a 1y/$820k extension.
Perfect backup OF, once again recovered after a bad start

OF Brandon Guyer(30, 1*) MLB stats: .230/.287/.310 59G/24GS 2HR 6RBI 0.2WAR
Estimate: $800k, non-tendered
Not worth it, we could claim a similar OF off waivers again if needed

4.Make decisions about free agents/minor league free agents
We offered a couple of minor league extensions to RHRP Jesus E. Sanchez(29, 2.5*) and 3B Francisco Martinez(26, 2*), and are in talks with 3B Mark Reynolds... but there are some minor guys that will be let go... and SP Carlos Frias(26, 2*) was offered a 1y/$700K deal.

5.Take a look at the owner's goals

- Reach the Playoffs
Should be possible, but I'm not 100% convinced this year's success wasn't at least a bit fluky.

- Upgrade shortstop
I have full trust in Orlando Arcia and Jorge Mateo coming up and I don't want to take playing time away... owell, Mark can not have everything.

- Acquire a team leader till 2018
We will have to look out for that. It has to be a player that helps us on the field aswell.

- Keep building your team up, in order to reach the playoffs in the next 5 seasons
Still the plan!

6.Take a look at the new budget
We got a bump up to $174M and will have a ton of money available going forward, approx. $40M going forward. With a scouting budget close to $17M and a development budget of $27M, that means we are running our a cheap, but productive team out there. What we do with that money remains to be seen...

6. Trade Talks and Roster Chatter
We will be looking to flip guys like Nicasio and Maldonado for something useful... and I already have a top notch deal on my table that we will pull off sooner than later.... and that will involve a young reliever that should anchor our pen for years to come. We (hopefully) will be able to add a couple of guys via waivers the next days.. as some teams put some value out there up for grabs.

Trying to acquire the catcher of the future will be much harder without giving up parts of or MLB roster or a stud prospect tho. A guy that I will keep checking on will be Rays prospect C Nick Ciuffo(21, 1.5/5* HS, 1/4.5* OSA), the #28 prospect in baseball. His team is in 'Win Now!' mode but wants at least one major piece in return to make this one work... but we will keep looking.

Another option would be to acquire a good catcher on a MLB contract right away, using Lucroy as trade asset. The biggest guy to fire at the market... could just be Greg Bird with Kennys Vargas locked up... that would have to be a major return tho.
