June 29th

Milwaukee Brewers – Philadelphia Phillies 10-2
MIL SP Mike Fiers 7IP 7H 2R 2ER 0BB 4K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 4-5 R 4RBI TP HR
MIL CF Carlos Gomez 2-4 2R 2RBI BB HR SB(21)
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 2-4 2R RBI TP
MIL 1B Shane Peterson 2-4 2RBI
HR MIL: Carlos Gomez(11), Luis Sardinas(2)
HR PHI: none
W: Mike Fiers(4-6 3.88) L: Chad Billingsley(1-6 6.22)
We took a 5-0 lead after two and Luis Sardinas then added a 3-run shot in the 8th to put the game away for good.

News:
Reds 3B Todd Frazier(29, 3.5*) lifted two out of the park in a 2-3 2R 2RBI 2BB 2HR day, but wasn't able to lift his team past the Twins in a 5-6 loss. The 2014 All-Star has been struggling with consistency this year, batting .210-12-40.

In an attempt to bolster their rotation, the Blue Jays added SP Derek Holland(28, 2*, 5-3 4.24 76K 17GS) from the Rangers. Going back to Texas will be C Dioner Navarro(31, 1*, .227-2-10 24G) and prospect SS Sterling Guzman(17, 1*, R).

June 30th

Milwaukee Brewers – Philadelphia Phillies 7-4
MIL SP Travis Wood 6.2IP 5H 4R 4ER 2BB 8K, 1-3 R RBI HR
MIL LF Khris Davis 2-4 R 2RBI HR
MIL SS Cliff Pennington 3-3 R RBI BB DB
MIL 2B Hector Gomez 2-4 2RBI DB

HR PHI: Cody Asche(7)
W: Travis Wood(5-5 4.65) L: Cliff Lee(0-1 15.00) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(19 3.12)
We spoiled Cliff Lee's season debut today with 5ER in 3IP and tailored together two more runs top 9th.

News:
Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo(29, 3*) pitched a complete game in a 7-1 win against Baltimore, allowing 4H 1ER 0BB 7K. The former Brewer is 5-10 5.88 55K in 17 games this year.

Padres SP Robbie Erlin(24, 2*) completed eight innings of 3-hit ball, walking two and striking out 6 in a 2-0 win over Seattle. The young right hander is 5-7 4.11 67K in 15 starts.

Tigers SP Jeff Niemann(32, 2*) posted 8IP 4H 0ER 0BB 6K in a 1-0 win over the Pirates. Signed as free agent on March 30th, he is 7-4 3.83 65K in 16G/15 starts in Detroit.

The Reds will be without ace SP Johnny Cueto(29, 4*) for the next eight weeks. He is suffering from a strained shoulder and won't be able to continue his 7-7 4.76 73K campaign till approximately the end of August.

In the end, two years of a elite lefty are worth more for us than a half year of Kyle Lohse. Logan(4*) will be back for 2016 for $6.25M and we will try to waive and DFA LHP Christian Friedrich again...

I never really planned to keep Pennington for long as he has no long term upside at age 30. The Astros were willing to add him for Singleton(1/2.5* HS, 1/2* OSA), who is locked up till 2020 with a team option for 2021... for $16.5M guaranteed. Singleton should help us bridge the gap at first base till Bird is ready.

Subsequently, SP Wily Peralta, who was 2-0 3.26 17K in two rehab starts, was recalled from AAA.

We ended up with a 15-13 record in June and that alone... means that I'm getting alot of heat by local media. The Milwaukee Star, a newspaper I started to hate quickly, characterizes me as a GM that tends to 'screw up his own work' as the team 'would've had a shot at the NL Wild Card without all those rebuilding like trades and shutting down Braun with a minor injury.'. Maybe they are right, but I think by adding pieces like Mous, Singleton, Wood and all the pen guys, we stand a chance after dealing away all those veterans.

I never really planned to keep Pennington here and we got a possible power bat out of a waiver claim with a movable contract if things don't work out. As for Lohse, the trade market was slim here and Boone Logan was the best package of production and money going forward compared to offers like Mike Napoli(free agent after this year) or Hanley Ramirez(dat contract).

As for our draft picks, nine of our first ten picks signed and we only missed out on a couple of high school picks late in the draft. We went with high school upside and payed up to get it. We still have budget room to play with and will throw some money at the international FA that will be coming up tomorrow... hoping to add to system.

Dylan Bundy(R)22A0-15.178G/3GS1.665.6
Hunter Harvey(R)20A6-11.9911G/8GS0.898.0

This group has been rock solid and there has been a major turnaround for Travis Wood who is 4-0 2.53 40K in seven starts since coming over. Unfortunately, he wants a $7.5M extension for 2016... which is a bit costly in my oppinion... I would love to keep him, but more at a $3M-$4M range...

Wily Peralta made a good impression in AAA and our scouts still think he is the best starter on our staff... and he hopefully will stay healthy to show that. We made room for him by trading Lohse so hopefully he stays healthy. Friedrich's stint with us was short and we hope to smuggle him through waivers to get im to AAA. Our depth is not that great since dealing away Paul Maholm so we could need him.

Claiming relievers off waivers has been a remarkebly success this season, especially if they are Dodger relievers. Adding Boone Logan should solidify this group and with young talented Corey Knebel and some veterans in AAA, we are looking good. Jeremy Jeffress responded to our trust after a bad April... with 13.1 scoreless innings in June, collecting eight saves and a win... Our head scout doesn't like our depth in the minors here and things we could use a relief prospect or two... We'll see about that.

Catchers:

Juan Centeno(L)25AA.276-0-11.59928G0.2140/0All stats AA

Basically the whole group has been a disappointment here. Lucroy batted .259 with a .726OPS which is still a disappointment and Maldonado is not getting anything done... and still, we will stay with this group for now as we are without alternatives and not in a pennant race. David Ross was waived by the Cubs this month... but a 37-year old veteran is not the answer here...

Our head scout snagged a ton of high school catchers with upside this draft so... maybe they can be an option in 2-3 years.

It didn't take us long to find out that Luis Sardinas seems to be the second baseman of the future and our leadoff hitter for a significant amout of time. He really sparked this club this month with his bat and his speed. His fielding has been a problem as he made a number of errors that led to some losses aswell, but he is young and our coaching staff thinks he has room to grow.

Moustakas came around lately as you may have noticed, and we want to keep him here for another year or two. However, we plugged in another unknown commodity in Jon Singleton for the rest of the year to get rid of Shane Peterson's bat everyday. His numbers are not spectacular in AAA but our scouts think he will improve with 300AB's for us at the major league level.

CF Monte Harrison(R)19A.245-3-28.66664G/63GS0.33811/13

As you would expect, Ryan Braun got hot... and went down with injury. We took the cautious way with him as we have to stick with him till the end of 2020 and need him healthy. Unfortunately, the rest of the outfield was rather disappointing lately as Khris Davis isn't quite producing consistently and Carlos Gomez only hit .240 this month... problems everywhere...

Trade Deadline thoughts:

We are 14 days away from the deadline and are 43-47, 17GB in the division and 8.5GB in the Wild Card race. However, since May 1st, we are 36-32 and trending up since then... There are basically three ways to go about this trade deadline for us.
1. Try to trade the expiring contracts of waiver wire claims SP Travis Wood and OF/1B John Mayberry Jr. away for prospects.
2. Do nothing and keep the group together.
3. Add pieces in order to make a desperation run

The last one is out of question... #1 and #2 will depend on the next two weeks, e.g. if we can creep closer to the second WC... and if we can get a good deal for those two if not.

Padres SP Ian Kennedy(30, 3*) pitched a complete game 4-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Marlins, walking none and striking out 11. The right hander is 6-14 3.62 117K in 21 starts, collecting some tough losses this year.

Mariners 3B Kyle Seager(27, 4/4.5*) had a successful day at the plate in a 10-9 loss by the hands of the Blue Jays, going 2-3 2R 5RBI BB 2HR. The reigning Gold Glover is batting .265-11-47 in 90G this year.

Rays SP Chris Archer(26, 2.5/3.5*) struck out 12 in a 7-0 win over the Orioles, going 8IP 2H 0ER 1BB 12K. The young hurler has struggled in 2015 with a 7-9 5.54 107 season in 21 starts.

Phone lines were glowing today as several trades were made. The Giants and Mariners traded veterans as SP Jake Peavy(34, 2.5*, 5-6 2.54 19GS) will go over to Seattle in exchange for LF Seth Smith(32, 1*, .303-6-40 81G).

Baltimore will unload the contract of 1B/OF Steve Pearce(32, 2.5*, .265-11-51 92G) to the Angels, getting SP Matt Shoemaker(28, 1.5/2*, 9-5 4.18 72K 20GS) and 2B Gosuke Katoh(20, 4.5* HS, 3* OSA, A), the former Yankee, back.

HR SFG: none
W: Taylor Jungmann(1-0 0.00) L: Madison Bumgarner(12-4 2.89) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(26 3.15)
Jungmann's debut was a memorable one as he outpitched the Giants behind three solo shots.

News:
Phillies 2B Chase Utley(36, 1.5*) slammed five hits in five tries in a 7-6 loss against the Pirates as his 5-5 3R RBI BB 2DB HR day wasn't enough. The 13-year pro is batting .291-8-38 in 90 games.

Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz(23, 3.5/4*) pitched eight innings of 7-hit ball with 1BB and 7K in a 2-0 win in Baltimore. The young right hander who was part of the Houston-Gattis deal is 5-7 3.31 84K in 20G/14GS in Atlanta.

The Red Sox lost DH David Ortiz(39, 4*) for the next three weeks because of a knee sprain. The legendary DH is batting .261-17-55 in 97 games in 2015.

The great season of Tigers SP Jeff Niemann(32, 2*) is over as he has suffered a torn flexor tendon and will be out for approx. 10 months. He was 9-4 3.65 88K in 20G/19GS prior to the injury.

The Diamondbacks shipped lefty SP Andrew Chafin(25, 2.5*, 7-7 5.01 25G/15GS) to the White Sox, grabbing prospect RF Jacob May(23, 2.5* HS, 3* OSA, A) and prospect LF Keenyn Walker(24, 1* HS, 2.5* OSA, A) in the deal.

W: Will Smith(3-4 3.72) L: Jeremy Affeldt(2-5 5.77) SV: Juan Nicasio(2 3.91)
Hector Gomez hit a crucial 2-run double to win it top 10th... we are rolling folks...

News:
D'backs SP Patrick Corbin(26, 2*) had to battle to get a W tonight, and he pitched 9.1IP 6H 1R 0ER 3BB 4K in a 7-1 win over Seattle that his team scored six runs top 10th for him. In 10 starts, the lefty is 6-4 3.59 51K after returning from injury.

Indians SP Allen Webster(25, 1/1.5*) pitched a gem in his first start in Cleveland, going 8.1IP 4H 0ER 2BB 3K in a 4-0 victory over Kansas City. The righty has split the season between ARI and CLE and rotation and pen, good for a 3-6 1SV 5.65 49K in 29G/8GS year.

July 29th

HR MIL: none
HR SFG: none
W: Wily Peralta(4-3 2.93) L: Ryan Vogelsong(3-3 1.29) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(27 3.09)
Vogelsong got his first start after 26 games out of the pen... and ran into some great pitching and spot on offense today... that collected a 3-game sweep of the NL West Division leaders.

News:
The time of 1B Allen Craig(31, 1.5*, .289-6-34) in Boston is over. He will suit of for the New York Mets now and in that deal, the Boston Red Sox acquired the services of struggling veteran SP Bartolo Colon(42, 1.5*, 2-8 5.99 48K 16GS).

In a rather surprising deal for a division leader, the Cardinals sent CF Jon Jay(30, 4*, .264-1-12 59G/30GS) to the Indians. Jay, mostly used as backup OF this year, was flipped for RHRP Anthony Swarzak(29, 0.5*, 2-0 6.04 25.1IP) and prospect SS Edmundo Sosa(19, 4.5* HS, 3.5* OSA, S A)... who they got from St. Louis just three weeks ago in the Hagadone deal...

July 30th

Chicago Cubs - Milwaukee Brewers 5-7
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 6.1IP 6H 3R 3ER 2BB 8K

The wild ride continues. Thornburg allowed three in the 1st and nothing else, we stormed back for a 5-3 lead, Will Smith blows it in the 8th... and we score two bottom 8th on a 2-run Schafer single to win it.

News:
Astros 1B Chris Carter(28, 1*) hit two bombs in a 12-2 win over the Angels, contributing with a 2-3 4R 4RBI 2BB 2HR day. He once again struggles to hit for average but shows power with a .212-21-57 season in 101 games.

July 31st

HR CHC: Anthony Rizzo(16)
HR MIL: none
W: Tsuyoshi Wada(4-1 2.31) L: Travis Wood(6-7 4.76) SV: Antonio Bastardo(4 3.59)
A 2-run Rizzo homer in the 3rd and another great start by Wada(his eighth) ended a 7-game winning streak for us.

News:
Giants 2B Jose Miguel Fernandez(27, 2.5*) collected a 4-4 4R RBI BB DB day in a 14-5 win over the Rangers. Fernandez came over from Cuba and signed a 1y/$950k deal prior the season. He is batting .297-0-32 in 87G/62GS.

Rockies SP Jordan Lyles(24, 1.5/2.5*) continued a great year with eight shutdown innings against the Cardinals, going 8IP 4H 0ER 1BB 4K in a 2-1 win. The lefty is 5-7 3.25 89K in 22 starts.

Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsburg(31, 3.5*) has a 20-game hitting streak going. The second year Yankee is batting .323-7-23 21/30SB in 70G after losing 5-6 weeks with a intercostal strain.

Marlins RHCL Steve Cishek(29, 4.5*) will miss the rest of the season with a severe hamstring strain. He was 4-1 21SV 1.55 in 44G 46.1IP and is out for 2-3 month.

The trade deadline has passed... and the 54-50 Brewers have done nothing. The Milwaukee Star says: 'How K.C. Martin blew a playoff push. Read how he spend millions of dollars on international amateurs instead of adding for the NL Wild Card'. I like those writers... Yes, we did spend all the money we saved on contracts this year on adding international amateurs, blowing our $3M budget wide and paying up for the big talent...

I wasn't really willing to pay big prospects to add to this team when I did that and despite a big July... I still wasn't on July 31st. What is happening here still feels very fluky and i'll get into that when talking about the rotation... but in general we have a team at our hands that is overperforming and trying to show their former teams that they are the real deal... a state of mind that can change and can come crashing down on OUR head quickly.

If I'm wrong... we still will exceed the expectations of our owner and maybe end up luring more fans into Miller Park then we do now... as attendance figures are down by approx. 11%. We will keep our eyes on the waiver wire which was a story of success more or less... and see how the season will end up...

One reason why we didn't add to this team... lies in this group. Factoring in scouting reports, underlying numbers and track records... there is a discrepancy between those factors and the product on the field since May 1st... that worked to our advantage. While I would love to say something different... Tyler Thornburg is not an ace and won't continue on that path forever. Fiers... is in line I guess, but Jimmy Nelson has done way better than expected and Alex Wood is starting to struggle again.

I attribute some of this to our catchers and this is one reason why I tend to leave them alone despite them not hitting too well... but we are in the middle of the pack in defense... maybe I'm overanalysing but I see some regression in the final two months here.

Barring injury or a money waiver claim, this is the group we will roll out for the rest of the year. There have been some mishaps this month, looking at Broxton and Freeman, but if things to terribly wrong, we still can recall Corey Knebel from AAA, who has done a terrific job as their closer since getting sent down again. Things will reshuffle for the next season with Broxton leaving and Freeman being on the hot seat... but that is offseason talk.

Well, Lucroy isn't quite catching up to the hype around the team and contines to swing a rather cold bat. As mentioned above and earlier, he is on a long leash because of his ability to handle this scrappy pitching staff and because he is one of the team leaders. Some of our hot bats startet to rip on him a bit... so maybe we can light a fire under him...

When the day comes... and Ron Ronenicke finally decides who is the starting shortstop for this team... I'll buy him a beer. He has gone back and forth between Gomez and Segura, platooning them, changing them every other day... it's rather maddening. He seemingly wants to go with Segura more as he sees a higher ceiling... and his regular season numbers look better anyways.

After all the moves and changes... Luis Sardinals leads our infield in WAR... and we offered a long-term team friendly extension to him recently... he is mulling about it right now.

All our outfielders improved this month and helped us to put some runs on the board. Khris Davis posted a .273-5-14 .841OPS month, finally giving us some more production. Carlos Gomez hit .308 and Ryan Braun hit .277-4-10 .830OPS... which is exactly what we want out of him and our outfield... Mayberry Jr. got some starts and some pinch hit appearances... but Singleton, Braun and Davis are blocking him.

News:
Yankees SP Michael Pineda(26, 4/4.5*) lost the perfect game in the 7th to Dalton Pompey and settled in with a 1-hit shutout with 0BB 6K against Toronto. Pineda has been sharp in 2015, going 11-4 3.61 111K in 23 starts.

A wild game that saw Jeffress blow his fourth save after Mayberry Jr. homered as pinch hitter to give us the lead, that saw Rosenthal leave injured bottom 9th and Martin Maldonado hitting a walk-off sac to win it.

News:
Rockies SP Kyle Lohse(36, 1*) pitched a 3-hitter with 1BB and 3K against the Nationals. The right hander is 5-12 4.09 83K in 23G between MIL and COL.

Tyler's downfall was his control as our scouts predicted it would be some day. We only got two hits off Wacha but collected six runs off their pen... not enough as Will Smith imploded for 4ER.

News:
Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo(29, 3/3.5*) pitched a 5-hitter in a 5-0 win over Seattle, allowing only 5H 1BB 6K. He is only 8-11 5.08 88K in 24 starts, being wildly inconsistent this year.

News:

We told him that we want him to work on his control and his slider a bit more in order to make sure he won't get exploited when teams see him a second time.

White Sox RF Trevor Plouffe(29, 2*) went deep twice in a 4-1 win over the Angels, going 2-3 2R 4RBI BB 2HR today. The former 2004 first rounder is batting .236-11-48 between CWS and MIN.

Cardinals RHCL Trevor Rosenthal(25, 4.5*) will be out for 12 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He left a game against the Brewers last week and was having a 3-4 2.42 30SV year in 52IP.

The short story, we jumped on Hammel for seven runs in the 1st including three home runs and Peralta and Nicasio cruised it home.

News:
Indians SP Corey Kluber(29, 4*) pitched a 3-hit shutout against the Yankees, allowing no walks and 8K's in a 6-0 win. The 2014 AL Cy Young winner is 13-8 3.84 140K in 25 games this year.

August 24th
offday

News:
Royals 3B Jorge Cantu(33, 2*) had a 4-4 3R 6RBI BB DB 2HR night in a 10-3 win over the Orioles. Cantu hasn't played in the majors since 2011 and was on waivers early even... but is batting.260-13-54 in 97 games after signing a 1y/$1.2M deal on April 9th.

August 25th

Milwaukee Brewers – Cleveland Indians 3-5
MIL SP Wily Peralta 7IP 6H 3R 3ER 3BB 4K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 1-3 R BB
MIL LF Khris Davis 1-3 RBI BB
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 2-3 RBI DB
HR MIL: none
HR CLE: Michael Brantley(14)
W: Trevor Bauer(7-11 4.07) L: Jonathan Broxton(2-4 3.91) SV: Cody Allen(25 4.10)
The game was tied when Peralta left... but Broxton and Logan ended up conceding a 2-run Brantley HR bottom 8th that got the Indians a W.

News:
Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista(34, 4.5*) collected a 2-4 2R 3RBI BB 2HR day in a 9-4 win over the Rangers. Bautista, leading the AL in home runs now, is batting .281-30-81 1.003OPS in 101 games. Former Mariner and now Toronto LF Michael Saunders(28, 3*) mirrored that game with a 3-4 3R 2RBI BB 2HR game. He is batting .256-11-48 7/12SB in 97 games and signed a 4y/$27.16M extension recently.

August 26th

Milwaukee Brewers – Cleveland Indians 3-10
MIL SP Mike Fiers 3.2IP 7H 6R 3ER 1BB 3K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 1-4 R 2RBI HR

MIL 1B Jon Singleton 1-2 2BB
HR MIL: Ryan Braun(17), Mike Moustakas(17)
HR CLE: Nick Swisher(10)
W: Allen Webster(6-6 4.93) L: Mike Fiers(6-9 3.80)
A 2-run Braun blast got us ahead right away but bad pitching and a couple errors by our middle infielders got us behind 6-2 and later 8-3 and we never recovered...

News:
Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka(26, 4.5/5*) pitched a complete game in a 6-2 win over the Astros, going 9IP 4H 2ER 1BB 9K. In his second season, the 2x All-Star is 8-13 3.68 163K in 27 starts.

Phillies LF Jaff Decker(25, 3.5/4*) had a 2-HR day in a 6-2 win over the Mets, going 2-3 3R 3RBI BB 2HR SB in the win. Acquired from Pittsburgh in July, the young lefty is batting .301-12-38 in 45 games.

August 27th
offday

News:
Reds C Devin Mesoraco(27, 4.5*) helped his team immensely in a 5-2 win over the Dodgers, going 3-4 2R 2RBI DB 2HR. The 2x All-Star is signed on a cheap deal till 2018 and batting .260-20-60 .804OPS in 114 games.

Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter(29, 4.5*) collected a 4-hit game in the leadoff spot in a 13-5 win over the D'backs. Carpenter went 4-4 4R 3DB and improved to bat .301-16-58 .866OPS in 124 games.

The upcoming three game set against Cincinnati will be a crucial one... as they won two out of three against the Dodgers while we dropped two in Cleveland. We are now 2GB for the second NL Wild Card and if we want that one, beating them here would help us immensely.

August 28th

Cincinnati Reds - Milwaukee Brewers 1-3
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 7IP 3H 1R 1ER 4BB 5K, 1-3
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 0-1 R RBI 2BB

HR CIN: none
HR MIL: none
W: Tyler Thornburg(12-8 2.87) L: Jason Marquis(3-4 4.97) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(35 2.78)
With the game tied at 1, Mous walked in the 6th, Lucroy doubled him in and Carlos Gomez singled to make it 3-1... and Thorny and the pen never looked back.

News:
Indians SP Corey Kluber(29, 4/4.5*) notched a complete game in a 5-1 win over the Angels, pitching 9IP 5H 1ER 2BB 6K. As reigning AL Cy Young winner, he is 15-9 3.71 159K in 28 starts.

D'backs LF Ender Inciarte(24, 2/2.5*) collected a 5-hit day in a 14-5 rout of the Athletics, going 5-4 4R 2RBI 3DB. The speedy and defensive talented outfielder is batting .283-4-25 25/30SB in 96 games.

Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista(34, 4.5*) had ANOTHER two home run game in a 9-4 win over the Tigers, going 2-3 2R 2RBI BB 2HR. That gives him a .287-34-87 1.041OPS year, leading the AL in OPS, HR and BB(96).

Phillies SS Jordy Mercer(29, 1.5*) had a 2-HR run day in a 7-1 win over the Padres, going 2-4 2R 3RBI 2HR SB in the game. Dealed over from Pittsburg in May, Mercer is batting .210-10-39 in 101 games between PIT and PHI.

August 29th

Cincinnati Reds - Milwaukee Brewers 5-2
MIL SP Travis Wood 5IP 5H 5R 5ER 2BB 3K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 2-4
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 1-4 R RBI HR
MIL 1B Jon Singleton 2-4 DB

HR MIL: Mike Moustakas(15)
W: Johnny Cueto(8-8 4.51) L: Travis Wood(8-9 4.35) SV: Jumbo Diaz(16 3.34)
Wood fell apart in the 5th, allowing three runs to make it 5-1 and we couldn't collect the big hit.

News:
Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos(23, 4.5/5*) and his team beat the Blue Jays 12-6 today and he went 4-5 4R 3RBI 2DB HR in the win. Drafted in the first round in 2010, Castellanos is batting .271-8-39 in 94 games in his sophomore year.

August 30th

MIL SP Taylor Jungmann 8IP 2H 0R 0ER 2BB 6K
MIL LF Khris Davis 1-3 R BB
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 1-4 RBI
HR CIN: none
HR MIL: none
W: Taylor Jungmann(6-0 1.16) L: Anthony DeSclafani(12-7 2.68) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(36 2.73)
Jungmann was dominating today and Davis and Lucroy got the crucial hits in the 4th to give him a 1-run lead.

News:
Brewers SP Taylor Jungmann(25, 1.5/3* HS, 0.5/3.5* OSA) pitched 8IP of 2-hit ball with 2BB and 6K in a 1-0 win over the Reds. The rookie is a perfect 6-0 1.16 36K in six starts.

Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong(38, 0.5*) delievered a vintage outing in a 4-0 win over the Cardinals, going 8IP 5H 0ER 2BB 3K. Between pen and rotation, Vogelsong is 4-6 2SV 2.53 in 33G/7GS.

Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera(32, 5*) hit a couple of home runs today, but that was not enough to beat the Blue Jays in a 6-7 loss. Cabrera went 2-3 2R 4RBI BB 2HR in the game and is therefore batting .290-30-75 .928OPS in 129 games.

The crazy ride continues as a 15-11 month puts us 1.5GB the second Wild Card as the Reds won yesterday while we were off. While a -37 run differential suggests that we are DEFINITLY playing over our heads... we are in striking distance to tailor together our fifth postseason berth of franchise history. We will bring in some september callups to help this push of course.

The good news is, we play six against the Pirates and three against the Marlins in September which should help us... as both are sub .500 teams. We also face off six times agaisnst the Reds and six times against the Cardinals... this is possible if we keep playing over our heads... stay tuned.

The story of August was Taylor Jungmann... and Ron Roenicke told me he would keep him in the rotation and slot Jimmy Nelson back into the rotation... putting Travis Wood into the pen. We showed some cracks here as Fiers was 0-3 5.68 and Thornburg had a 4.70ERA despite winning four games. The duo of Hunter Harvey and Dylan Bundy will get the callup to play in AA for the rest of the regular season... as they are looking very good in single A.

It has been a constant struggle to get a group of relievers on the field that posts an ERA under three and it continues. Will Smith as our second lefty posted a 6.17ERA this month and made the Logan trade so crucial for us... as Smith is incredibly inconsistent. Jeffress has not been the greatest closer in baseball... but has done his job and is 36/40 in save chances and could end up with a good number of saves... especially if he keeps this pace.

We recalled Corey Knebel who should be a fixture for years to come if you ask our scouts and our AAA coaching staff. Recalling 31-year old Brandon Kintzler is more or less for depth... as we will non-tender him in arbitration barring a sensational turnaround. Chris Perez has not impressed in AAA and Michael Blazek is not on the 40-man yet... so he will assume the closer role in AAA for now.

Not alot of change here. Lucroy batted a .258/.302/.382 slash with 1HR and 8RBI in August and that is actually his second best month...

Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly), Jon Singleton went completely cold in August and John Mayberry Jr.(see below) got in some more swings at first. Actually, Moustakas and Segura also went cold and in this situations... I would love to see more Luis Jimenez on the field... Roenicke's lineup card. Luis Sardinas is still leading the pack in WAR depite only playing in 82 games... and hopefully the big contract extension will pay off here.

Looking at the outfield, Ryan Braun has been better than last year, but lost alot of playing time. Khris Davis clearly took a step back compared to his .244-22-69 .756OPS 2014 and the same goes for Carlos Gomez... who flashed more speed on the basepaths but less quality hitting.

We caught a hot bat on the wire in John Mayberry Jr. and will keep rotating him between 1B & LF in order to keep him hot... as he is .338-5-18 in 29G/18GS with us. We recalled Ryan Kalish who also swung a hot bat lately... and have alot of talent underway in the minors...

The Detroit Tigers(86-70) clinched the AL Central today... but lost SP David Price(30, 4*) for the next four weeks to a torn meniscus. The 2012 AL Cy Young winner was 13-10 4.10 172K in 34 starts. His team however... is on a 14-game winning streak!

Orioles CF Adam Jones(30, 2.5*) hit a couple of homers against the Blue Jays in a 13-3 win, going 3-4 3R 5RBI BB 2HR. The 4x Gold Glover lost more than a month to several injuries this year, limiting him to 125 games batting .273-13-66 .709OPS.

The Seattle Mariners(92-65) clinced the AL West today.

September 29th

RHRP Chris Hatcher(30, 3*) was eligible to come off the DL and was brought back to the Brewers. He is 7-1 5SV 3.19 in 48IP in 2015.

HR MIL: none
HR SDP: none
W: Josh Johnson(7-1 2.59) L: Mike Fiers(7-13 3.94) SV: Craig Kimbrel(27 1.99)
Johnson dominated us today while Fiers did his best to keep it close... combined 3-hit shutout.
The Reds lost against the Cubs in extra innings, so we are still mathematically in it...

News:
Padres SP Josh Johnson(31, 2.5*) pitched eight innings of shutout ball in a 2-0 win over the Brewers, allowing only three hits and 1BB while striking out 8. The 2x All-Star started his career with the Marlins where he led the league in ERA in 2010. After a short stint with the Blue Jays, he joined the Padres where he is 7-1 2.59 56K in 12 starts after missing most of the year due to injury.

Pirates SP Gerrit Cole(25, 3.5/4.5*) pitched a 5-hitter against the Cardinals in a 10-0 win, allowing 4BB and 5K's. Drafted 1st overall in 2011, Cole has developed into one of the better hurlers in the NL, posting a 12-10 3.40 132K year in 29 starts. His SS Jung-Ho Kang(28, 4.5*, .234-13-52 118G) collected a 4-5 4R 2RBI 2DB day in the win.

September 30th

The Brewers announced that they have claimed C Tim Federowicz(28, 3*) off waivers from the Padres. The right handed batter played four years in part time duty with the Dodgers before joining the Padres in the Kemp/Grandal deal this offseason. He was batting .255-6-16 in 54G/40GS as backup C.

Milwaukee Brewers – San Diego Padres 1-5

And therefore, we are eliminated from playoff contention and back at .500 for the season.

News:
D'backs 1B Paul Goldschmidt(28, 4*) helped to bomb the Rockies pitching staff in a 16-3 win today, going 4-6 3R 3RBI 2DB TP. He was an 8th rounder in 2009 and was named an NL All-Star the first time this year. Goldy is batting .288-40-111 .928OPS in 157 games.

Ron wanted to get Nicasio in to start a game to see if he could handle it... which worked quite well. Bad news... our offense is still horrible and the Padres walked off on a Jedd Gyorko pinch hit single bottom 11th.

Marlins SP Mat Latos(27, 4.5*) pitched eight scoreless in a 4-1 win over the Phillies, allowing four hits and four walks while whiffing eight. He was traded over this offseason for 13-game winner Anthony DeSclafani and ended up 10-11 3.78 145K in 32 games himself.

The Astros won 3-0 in Arizona today behind 8.2 shutout innings of SP Dallas Keuchel(27, 3*), who allowed only four hits and struck out two. There are two ways to look at this. a.) I was right all the time and this 11-21 strech showed that, or b.) I jinxed it. The truth is that our pitching, hampered by the Peralta injury, started to shake and with out offense not getting things done(we scored 15 runs in 6 games the last week), this ship went down fast. We were 32-17 in one run games this year... and that was with a bad bullpen hanging around... there was so much luck involved getting in range of a playoff berth... and we actually never HAD a playoff spot.

Adding Federowicz should add some pressure on the other two lugs behind the dish, but that is only one area of concern. The pen will loose RHRP Jonathan Broxton as we won't pick up his team option, Kintzler will go and there are alot of question marks in this group... Travis Wood will be gone and Jungmann, Nelson, probably Nicasio, maybe Friedrich and somebody we bring in this offseason will fight for a rotation spot next year.

As for the offense... there are alot of guys in this group where we are unsure what the real deal is. We may end up trying to find the answers in 2016... if we like it or not. We decided to not call up either Bird nor one of the hurlers acquired from Baltimore... as we as the front office were pretty sure they wouldn't have been able to lift this team into the playoffs and into the NLDS.

Now, I will leave you alone with those numbers below... and try to explain all of that to my owner.
