The Oilers gave up a little scoring to be a little tighter defensively this season. Although the Oilers did get more shots on net this season, they made an significant improvement in shots allowed. The centers were better this season in the dots, but not as good in the second half of the season as the first half. One area of concern was the PK, where the Oilers took a huge step backwards.

Hutchinson was annointed the #1 when he was traded for Cam Talbot back last season. He gives the Oilers a chance to win every night. Scrivens may be done at the end of this season as the Oilers could look trade the veteran goalie.

Not a lot of offense from the defense, but certainly a better defensive style core. It will be interesting to see how Reinhart reacts when he comes back from his injury that has kept him out of the line up since mid December. Brenden Dillon was a solid waiver wire pick up and Darnell Nurse played his 1st full NHL season.

Connor McDavid had back to back 74 point seasons, but I think he was better defensively this season with a +11 rating vs a +5 in his rookie year. Bo Horvat added a solid two way game to the Oilers scoring 3 goals and adding 6 assisting with a +1 rating in 22 games. At 30 years of age, the Oilers have a decision to make with Lauri Korpikoski as he seemed to improve on his Frank Selke season from last year. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a career high 64 points and joined Hall and McDavid on the top scoring line.

2016-17 NHL Playoffs Preview:

The playoffs are about to get underway, and the early betting appears to be on the Washington Capitals to come away as the Stanley Cup Winners. Forwards Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin and Goalie Braden Holtby will make them the team to beat.

Their primary obstacle will be the St Louis Blues, led by star forward Vladimir Tarasenko and defenseman Alex Pietrangelo.

Pittsburgh led by captain Sidney Crosby and forward Evgeni Malkin also have a legitimate chance at the Cup, although the may need a little luck to take home the title.



Edmonton Oilers vs Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks will get home ice advantage in this series starting April 16th. In 5 meeting the Oilers were 3-2-0 against the Ducks. The Oilers will start the playoffs without D Griffin Reinhart. Reinhart is still 2 months away from recovering from his Fractured Coracoid (Shoulder). The Ducks come into the series completely healthy. The Oilers will need to watch their two top snippers, Anders Lee and Corey Perry who each had 31 goals this year. The Ducks are stingy when it comes to goals against, finishing 5th with 202 GA.

It took just 4 minutes to get this series heated up with a scrap between Oilers Darnell Nurse and Ducks Patrick Maroon, but the shots were 9-9 in the 1st and the score remained 0-0. Another tight second period, which is not a surprize with the defensive minded Ducks, the score is still 0-0. Anders Lee finally broke out the scoring with a PP goal at the 7:02 mark of the 3rd. Bo Horvat was in the box for a high stick. Horvat got a chance to make amends with a goal at 15:41 to tie it and eventually send it into overtime in a period that was dominated by the Oilers. The Honda Center Ice had barely a chance to properly freeze when Connor McDavid sent the home crowd home dissappointed only 1:31 into overtime.

The Oilers take a 2-0 series lead with an explosive 1st period in which they outshot the Ducks 18-4. Justin Schultz opened the scoring at 11:24 and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made it 2-0 at 16:18. The Ducks replied with a goal a minute later by Carl Hagelin. The Ducks lost their #1 defenseman, Hampus Lindholm to a 10 Misconduct after he debated a holding call too aggressively 12 minutes in. Deadline acquistion Jacob de la Rose made it 3-1 at 16:09 and a few minutes later Bo Horvat got his 2nd of the series to make it 4-1. The Ducks looked to make it interesting early in the 3rd, a period in which they outshot the Oilers 15-5 when Andrew Cogliano scored a SH goal just over 2 minutes in. But Bo Horvat put it away with his 2nd of the game at 4:33 to end the scoring.
