The 2054 season is underway. Tom Seaver pitched a CG shutout on Opening Day. Rickey Henderson stole 3 bases & scored once. That would have been enough.

We're 6-4 after 10 games. We're going with the same players from the end of last season right now.

Considering a few players for subbing in including:

Eric Davis OF
Darryl Strawberry RF
Tony Gwynn RF/DH
Lenny Dykstra CF
Bo Jackson LF
Ozzie Smith SS
George Brett 3B
Keith Hernandez 1B

And a few others...Jerry Koosman, Sid Fernandez.

Maybe I'll post some updates this week

32-14 after 46 games and running right behind the Bearsville Bears... for once, after a decent handful of games, there doesn't seem to be any team in the whole 30-team league that is decidedly "running away with it".

For the time being, I even have the best RS-RA margin at (+127).

For the rest of the week, I will try some of my preferred subs without trying my luck too much and see how it goes.

Jerry Koosman was smacked around in his first 2 starts, and that'll probably be it for him. Craig Biggio was subbed in as well & he helped the team win at least one game with a grand slam, & is putting up slightly above "average" (PL) numbers.

Thumbs up

Carlos Correa is going to give the Iron Man a rest at SS starting with today's sim & ending ?...Figure maybe I'll insert El Sid in for Jerry Koosman next time around the rotation since I wanted him to play, too.

And then we have a few other reserves who I want to play but I'll have to monitor our team's progress at the same time & not give our division away.

Right now:

Nearing the end of the regular season 2054

The Flyers are 102-54, a 4-2 finish from tying their best record ever. A 5-1 or better finish away from breaking their 106-win mark.

However, that's not all that's on the line. The Flyers are MATHEMATICALLY just about barely alive in the division race. If we finish 6-0, the Bearsville Bears would have to go 2-5 or worse to blow their now comfortable 4.5 game lead in the division. It has been back-and-forth all season. Both teams have led for some time, no more than 3-5 games by either team. So it would be a very good time for another see-saw act. Doesn't really seem like the most likely thing right now...And I'd have to say the MLB playoff format is kind of screwy with us finishing with the 2nd best mark in the conference & having to win a wild card game and a best-of-5 series just to get to the conference championship.

However, that should be a fun challenge tomorrow if I don't get immediately ousted...and in the meantime I picked up Lefty Grove from the auction house.

Finished 108-54!

But we're the Wild Card tomorrow.

But then again the 2 teams that finished better than me only finished 3 games, & 4 games ahead of me.

Plan, postseason foiled

I decided to pitch Tom Seaver (RHP) against the Landsharks in the Wild Card game & set up for maybe Lefty Grove and Vida Blue (LHP) at least 3 times in the DS…BECAUSE… The Landsharks were .530 (-.007) vs. RHP, and more importantly the Bears were .524 (-.161) vs. LHP during the regular season.

So I set Seaver as the starting pitcher and checked my lineup. Submit.

However, 75 seconds or so before gametime I noticed Lefty Grove was in line to start the Wild Card game. ..Pretty SURE I just set it to Seaver… Game simulated before I was able to decide to try & set it to Seaver again and I even ended up LOSING the game 4-1!

Plus Turns out I had set the vs. left-handed lineup before the game too even though Walter Johnson is actually a right-handed pitcher (Big Walt/Big Unit Confusion)… This wasn't that big of a deal since my latest vs. RHP lineup played the game; just didn't hit much.

Did the AI try to automatically start my #1 pitcher ??

I am in a MONSTER of a division this season...

Me+
Edmonton SnowPlows (4000+ wins, .698 WPct., 1 PL title)
Flatbush Dukes (.674 WPct., 2 PL titles)
Exeter Blue Hawks (14 PL titles)
Metchosin Bulldogs...

8-11 after 19 games, 4th place.

28-26, 4th place.

Snow Plows are plowing away in 1st place...

Think it's the Exeter Blue Hawks playing .68? ball even though they got off to a slowish start, they rebounded from that mightily.

And the Flatbush Dukes are in 3rd place and represent the wild card at .660.

We 7-1/2 games back...

Rickey Henderson stole home plate in the top of the 9th in a tie game we went on to win a few virtual weeks ago. 1st time I saw that...

Lou Gehrig & Darryl Strawberry both hit what must have been "one of the longest home runs ever hit"...ha, that's a few seasons (10+) ago now. Well, I'm just recounting them now...Highlights...highlights. I parted with Gehrig.

Tekulve blew a couple big ones but he still has his job. (This season).

That's about it for now.

Well…63-57 after 120 games. Kind of an off-year. And the worst of the top 3 teams in the division is the Exeter Blue Hawks at 85-37. 1st place the SnowPlows are 99-22. The Flatbush Dukes (88-34) are sandwiched in between them. The schedule is FILLED (80%+) with games against these 3 teams in the final month of the regular season.

Pitching 2055

Some pitching stats from the past year because I used Kent Tekulve as closer. And maybe to compare them to next year's statistics...

Regular Starters
Lefty Grove 14-11, 3.85 ERA
Vida Blue 11-10, 3.96 ERA
Tom Seaver 12-11, 3.32 ERA
Johan Santana 9-8, 4.61 ERA

Other starters
Bob Gibson 8-5, 2.96 ERA
Sandy Koufax 1-6, 10.44 ERA
Dwight Gooden 3-5, 4.86 ERA

Relievers

Kent Tekulve 20/27 in save opportunities
Brian Wilson 10/15 in save opportunities
Christy Mathewson 3/10 in save opportunities
Mariano Rivera 5/9 in save opportunities

STAFF TOTAL: 38 saves in 66 save opportunities (57.5%), 28 total blown saves.

Overall Runs differential went from franchise-best +321 previous season to -4 on the season. Streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ended, a whopping 32 games behind the 2nd wild card.

Smile Pitching 2056

Here's the contrast from a couple posts ago representing last season/week.

Lefty Grove: 16-9, 240 ERA
Vida Blue: 25-2, 1.90 ERA
Tom Seaver 18-8, 3.07 ERA
Dwight Gooden 14-6, 3.35 ERA
Johan Santana 14-5, 3.50 ERA

Joe McGinnity 5-2, 5.91 ERA

---------------

So....

Lee Smith saved 49 games with 53 total opportunities. or so.
Brian Wilson saved 4 games with 7 total opportunities. or so. (He was good, though all in all)
C. Mathewson was 3-for-3.
Koufax and Halladay both 2-for-3. (4-for-6) see how easy things get out of control)..."we would have would 4 if they didn't blow 2" as in 2-for-4 and perfect in a couple others...
And Lefty Grove blew one.

TOTAL: 60 saves in 70 chances... 85.7% conversion.

If you check out the post from last season it was under 60% and I believe something like 18 more possible wins based just on closing out.

I'm one of the funniest mother fwhuckoopsers alive. I beat the Budapest Red Devils with the left arm of God. I kicked their ass, 4 games to 1. A team with a winning pct. Of .800+ on the season reduced to a .200 team over 45 thrilling innings. The team went 115-47 in the regular season. The Budapest Red Devils 130-32. (3-3 regular season series). Didn't matter.

2056 playoffs scores

Here's the raw results. I guess I will add anything else this week as far as those highlights and details.

First Round - Norway Dodgers - (YIKES!)

Flyers Ballpark
Flyers 10, Norway 3
Flyers 5, Norway 7
(1-1)

Norwegian Airlines Stadium
Norway 4, Flyers 3 (YIKES!)
Flyers 4, Norway 3

Flyers Ballpark
Flyers 5, Norway 1

NOTE: I did not expect to face this team in the playoffs because of the 8 or 9 similar teams in my conference but had noted them in game results during regular season looking at their lineup (and sorta pitching) as a team that could easily beat me 3 out of 5. ( I realized if I did face them it would likely be in round 1)

Second round - West Ham (United) Hammers
Flyers Ballpark
Flyers 2, Hammers 1
Flyers 1, Hammers 3

London Stadium
Flyers 9, Hammers 6
Flyers 6, Hammers 3
Flyers 3, Hammers 0

FINALS - Budapest Red Devils (Gonna have to be PERFECT)

Old Trafford
Red Devils 5, Flyers 1
Flyers 7, Red Devils 0

Flyers Ballpark
Flyers 1, Red Devils 0 (This actually qualifies as an epic pitching face-off between Cy Young (RD) & Lefty Grove (NYF)) (THANK YOU, LORD)
Flyers 9, Red Devils 4 (can smell victory)
Flyers 6, Red Devils 1
