Page 5 Recap....

The Hiram College Terriers are a F2P, pack opening only squad. After some early pack pulling success in the entry pool, the team was able to be competitive in the Iron and Bronze leagues. The Silver league has seen the team be consistently around .500 with only one playoff appearance midway through our 5th season. The club is fully aware we've caught up to the competition and is patiently waiting for that next lucky pack pull in order to keep advancing up the league ladder.

The Top Dogs season after season have been:
100 Chris Sale
97 Justin Turner
90 Gabby Hartnett

only 3 players remain on the squad from the original starter packs 10 seasons ago:
69 Rod Carew
68 Ichiro Suzuki
66 Alex Johnson

Total Card Packs Opened- 141
Perfects Pulled- 1
Diamonds Pulled- 4
Golds Pulled- 10
Silvers Pulled- 45

Go Terriers!

As we kick off July, all the teams in the division remain very close in the standings.
In 5 games, newcomer Manny Machado is hitting .500 with 2 HR's. Very cool. Hopefully he can provide a spark for the stretch run.

The loudest barking Terriers to earn All-star invitations were:
Chris Sale
Justin Turner
Gabby Hartnett
Granny Hamner (1st timer)

Every team in our division is within 2 1/2 games.

New pup Machado is on fire and has been moved up in the batting order. We also pulled an 83 Zoilo Versalles to try out against 5 time gold glove winner Luis Aparicio at shortstop. Versalles might hit better, but Aparicio has top-of-the-line defense, so it's possible a platoon might be worked out.

In other notes, someone bit the mailman across from the Dogpark yesterday. All eyes are on Max Kepler who isn't happy platooning in right with Thurman Munson. I'll keep monitoring the situation.

The Terriers finished the season 82-80 which makes it only the second winning season we've had in the silver league. I'm looking forward to having Machado for a full season as he batted over .300 after his mid-season adoption. He's also trained up into the 70's at first base in that short amount of time, so that's awesome. I could really use a right fielder to upgrade over Max Kepler. He only plays against righties and he's been pretty terrible for 3 straight seasons now. If someone accidentally forgets to put him on a leash and he happens to chase a car down the road for miles and miles.....I won't be leading the search party.

Best In Show:
Justin Turner .313 17HR 85RBI
Gabby Hartnett .308 15HR 71RBI

In the Doghouse:
Max Kepler .231 8HR 35RBI
Lance McCullers Jr 13-12 4.88ERA

Packs Opened- 159
Perfects- 1
Diamonds- 4
Golds- 11
Silvers- 48

The Terriers are be-bopping along with an underwhelming 17-22 record, and after looking over the statistics, I'm finally going to make a bold move to try to rid myself of Max Kepler (.213) in right field.
For the rest of the season, Justin Turner will start training up in right field against righties. Machado will move back over to third base, and Sal Bando will start learning first base. This move will get Bando's power bat back into the lineup replacing Kepler's squeaky-toy bat. Turner has some outfield range in the 40's, so hopefully by next season he'll have some passable ratings and will give me more flexibility with the lineup.

Everything could change at a moment's notice if I pull a halfway decent outfielder from a pack.
Or if Max Kepler decides to stop dragging squeaky toys into the batters box, and starts using a major league wooden bat like the rest of the Terriers.

The Terriers are 47-48 at the break. The offense is pretty good, but our pitching and defense haven't shown up at the Dog Park just yet. Perhaps they've been buried in one of the numerous bone holes in the outfield. Who knows? Speaking of the outfield, Justin Turner is up to a 27 rating in right field. I'm hopeful he eventually gets into the mid 40's to make it worthwhile to play him there. Sal Bando is a 40 rating at first base and should eventually get into the 50's.

The 3 loudest barkers being groomed and shipped off to the All Star game are Gabby Hartnett, Manny Machado, and Charlie Morton.

In a minor move, I adopted 2010 Historical All Star Neftali Feliz (73) and put him in the bullpen. Zach Wheeler was sent to the pound.

Considering I had written off this season days ago by training up players at new positions, I'm actually kind of surprised we didn't finish worse than our 79-83 record. With that said, Justin Turner now has a 34 rating in right field, so I'll probably keep playing him there as long he doesn't try digging a hole and burying his glove. Sal Bando was much more urgent learning first base as he's a 62 rating. Although he did play keep away with the actual base a few days ago. Dragging it out to the centerfield warning track for no apparent reason. But whatever. They're a bunch of Terriers.

Best In Show:
Gabby Hartnett .297 13HR 67RBI
Charlie Morton 14-9 3.44ERA

In The Doghouse:
Hal Schumacher 8-14 6.32ERA 1.83WHIP

Packs Opened- 165
Perfects- 1
Diamonds- 4
Golds- 12
Silvers- 51

I'm not one to panic after 18 games in April, but geez Machado. I'm calling you out because you're a 99 card in the silver leagues. You're supposed to be setting a good example for the rest of the Terriers. If you don't like the Purina chow in the dugout, just say so, I can switch to Blue Mountain. If it's the fire hydrant issue, I can't do anything about it. You'll have to share with Sal Bando.

The Terriers are a paltry 43-55 at the all star break and that's good enough to be the 6th worst team in the league. Nothing has been clicking since opening day, so I'm just going to chalk it up as one of those strange years.

On the bright side, three Terriers get shiny new dog collars for being invited to the all star game....Chris Sale, Dave Righetti, and wait for it......

Thurman Munson!!!!! My fellow Kent State alum makes his first all star game by batting .335 7HR 30 RBI. He's my backup catcher and my starting right fielder against left handers. Good luck Thurman!

My team of pooches finished 77-85 and will once again repeat the Silver level. When the season was over I was fortunate enough to stroll into the kennel at just the right moment as a few new pups became available to tryout for the Terriers. Anthony Rizzo (86), Kyle Hendricks (81), and Michael Brantley (77). While none of those are game-breakers, at least it's some fresh blood that I can mix and match into the lineup. Not to mention I can finally send that troublemaker Kepler packing as Brantley is a far superior hitter.

Best In Show:
Thurman Munson .327 12HR 50RBI
Rod Carew .314 2HR 55RBI

In the Doghouse:
Manny Machado .228 13HR 73RBI

Recently Adopted:
1b Anthony Rizzo- 86
SP Kyle Hendricks- 81
LF Michael Brantley- 77

To the Pound:
SS Zoilo Versalles- 83
SP Ernie Broglio- 79
RF Max Kepler- 77

Packs Opened- 170
Perfects- 1
Diamonds- 4
Golds- 14
Silvers- 54

As the Terriers reported back to the Dog Park for our 8th season in the silver leagues, I was happy to notice new left fielder Michael Brantley was sporting a gold collar with the number 80 on it. Immediately after he strolled by, Charlie Morton trotted into the clubhouse with a 93 diamond collar. I'm feeling optimistic today just like all other 29 teams.

Anyhow, I'm posting the starters for the new season. The order may still get reshuffled a bit, but the biggest change is Manny Machado starting at SS and hopefully improving on his current 41 rating there. Machado will shift back to first base against left handers and Aparicio will slot into SS. Rizzo gets pulled.

I need to do something to motivate the Terriers to get back into the playoffs. Squeaky rubber cheeseburger toys and rawhide bones can only motivate good play for so long.

I deemed reserve Terrier 83 Zoilo Versalles as dispensable, so he was put up for adoption. The dividends were fantastic in the form of a cool 10,000. After some pack openings 89 POTM Gerrit Cole appeared and barked his way right into my starting pitching rotation. His movement rating is suspect, but he's going to strike some fools out. Possibly bite them.
I've got a powerful 1-2-3 of starters in Sale, Morton, and Cole
Kyle Hendricks has been sent to the pound.

I'm quite pleased with how the Terriers are playing right now (38-31) because we're right in the thick of things and have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. Everyone is hitting at least .250 and the starting pitching has been solid. We're also first in fewest errors committed which is surprising seeing as Machado is only up to 47 at shortstop. By seasons end he should be in the 50's and I'll feel a lot more confident playing him there for upcoming seasons.

In other news, Jo-Jo Moore bit a mailman. I'm thinking it's because he's unhappy he lost his playing time to Michael Brantley. Who knows the reason, but the mailman should be fine. I gave him a couple game tickets so he won't sue.
Also, Lance McCullers Jr has been chasing squirrels and cats up trees recently. I'm doing everything I can to get his focus back on baseball.

My pooches have cooled off and are now a .500 team. Dave Righetti barked the loudest and was sent off to the all-star game.
This season can go either way so I've allowed all Terriers to help themselves to the stadium ballpark mustard pump.

I had a decent pack pull with 1 gold, 4 bronze, and 1 iron. The gold was a Historical All-star Kirby Puckett (87).

Ichiro Suzuki has been sent to the pound. Now I only have 2 original cards on my roster from the starter packs....69 Rod Carew and 66 Alex Johnson.

Things kind of fell apart for the Terriers in the second half of the season and we finished 76-86. The starting pitching broke down and everybody had ERA's in the 4's. McCullers was even worse in the high 5's. Basically the Dog Park turned into a zoo with unfocused pooches running around, digging holes, chewing up bases, chasing birds, etc...It wasn't pretty.

With that said, there's still some good news. Rod Carew won the batting title hitting .338 scoring me an extra 400 points. He wins my "best in show" award by far. And with my 2000 points I cracked 2 packs and was rewarded with adoption rights to 96 Aroldis Chapman. He'll provide a huge boost in the bullpen where Dave Righetti has been doing all the heavy lifting by himself for 14 seasons.

In other news, an investigation is underway to find out who left that yellow puddle in front of my office door.

I've been a tad bit lucky opening packs this past week to the tune of 3 new bullpen arms. Dave Righetti has done a fine job since the entry pool, but he has a lot more help now. Here's my updated Hiram College Terriers Roster. Keep in mind, we're F2P and only open packs to acquire players:

We're hitting and pitching but are only 40-42 and 13 1/2 games behind the division leader. Oh well.

At the break the Terriers were 48-49 and still 13 games back of Montreal. We're still in the top 3 for most offensive and pitching categories so I'm a bit perplexed why we're only hovering around .500.
The 3 loudest barking Terriers are being shipped off to the All Star festivities. They are:
Justin Turner
Gabby Hartnett
Gerrit Cole

Despite the 71-72 record, the Terriers are hitting and pitching. The second wildcard spot is still a legit possibility if we can just string together a few wins in the remaining 19 games.
For motivational purposes, I'm installing a shiny new red fire hydrant just behind second base.
