I agree with the narrator's commentary. I also appreciate that Sewell took over for Chapman in real life. I'm glad you found a place for him in Waffletown.

As we head into mid June of the inaugural season, Waffletown finds themselves in a somewhat odd position. After a hectic rush to throw together the team of old timey players, management tried to put a damper on expectations for the first season so fans wouldn't hope for more than the team was capable of handling.

While there is still a long way to go in the season, the Syrups are enjoying an early season success that has them in first place in the AC West division at 42-32, three games ahead of the second place team.

On the mound, Joe McGinnity (8-4, 3.22 ERA) and Bucky Walters (7-4, 3.52 ERA) are leading the way; with a surprising addition of Johnny Morisson (7-4, 4.42 ERA) doing his part as well.

At the plate, after starting the year down in the 8 hole, Frankie Frisch has moved up to the lead-off position with his team leading .319 average. Freddie Lindstrom (12 home runs, 43 rbis, .299 avg) and Jo Jo Moore (14 home runs, 60 rbis, .269 avg) have been solid in the 3-4 spots driving in the runners ahead of them.

Management continues to scan the waiver wires for potential upgrades, but is quite satisfied with the performance of the team they have; so they aren't in a rush to bring in anyone new in case it upsets the chemistry.

In a late night move, the Waffletown GM pulled the trigger on a minor deal:

OF - Austin McHenry (1921) - 73, for 151 pp

With Goose Goslin struggling at the plate in his back-up/off the bench role; he has been sent to the reserves and McHenry will take over as back-up to the starting outfielders.

As he sipped on his first cup o' coffee in the early morning hours of Thursday, the GM of Waffletown lazily browsed the waiver wire to see if any potential deals cropped up during the night... and his persistence paid off as he was able to pull in an upgrade to the bullpen:

CL - Hugh Casey (1942) - 75, for 399 pp

Schoolboy Rowe has been sent to the reserves to make room on the roster.

As we roll into the dog days of summer, the fans of Waffletown remain cautiously optimistic that their boys can maintain their level of play and reach the playoffs in their inaugural season. The Syrups sit at 59-48, still in first place in the AC West division and 5 games up on the Lansing Lug Nuts.

Readers would be forgiven if they perused the AC leaderboards and wondered how Waffletown is even in contention, as none of their players appear in the top performers in any batting or pitching categories; with the exception of Jo-Jo Moore, who leads the league in RBIs (with 89); and Freddie Lindstrom (who is second in batter WAR at 4.1; and has the longest hitting streak this season at 29). The team overall doesn't rank that high in any batting or pitching categories; so it's been an overall team effort to stay at the top of the division.

Management continues to watch the waiver wires, but hasn't pull the trigger on any new deals. They are content right now to let their war chest build up as the team is playing well above expectations, so there's no rush to make any changes.

edit: Waffletown had three representatives at the 2020 All-Star game: Frankie Frisch, Freddie Lindstrom and Rick Ferrell

In a late afternoon move, the Waffletown GM snapped up a deal off the waiver wire and brought aboard:

SP - Mel Harder (1934) - 86, for 3550 pp

Harry Kelley has been sent to the reserves, and Elden Auker has been shifted to the bullpen to make room for Harder on the starting staff.

When the inaugural season began, management in Waffletown did their best to temper the expectations of fans, so they didn't aim too high and expect more than the haphazardly assembled team of old timey players could handle. As the season progressed, and the Syrups sat atop the AC West division month after month, those expectations continued to rise as well, despite what management said.

While management secretly held onto the belief that the team would come back to reality and slide back into the pack, and more pessimistic fans gave voice to those same concerns; the team continued to plug along. As the regular season came to an end, the players proved those pessimists wrong.

The sound of champagne corks popping filled the Waffletown locker room as the Syrups locked up the AC West division title with an 88-74 record. Rather than rely on a couple of superstar players to carry the squad (as only two managed to even register on the league leader-boards), it was a true team effort for the Syrups.

On the individual side, Freddie Lindstrom lived up to the hype with a solid season at the plate (28 home runs, 99 RBIs, .300 average). He also had a league high 29 game hitting streak during the season. On the defensive side, he was equally solid, leading the AC with a +9.8 zone rating and a 1.062 defensive efficiency at third base.

Jo-Jo Moore did his job in the DH role, driving in a team high 124 runs and cranking 29 home runs.

Peanuts Lowrey did a fantastic job patrolling center field and led the team in zone rating at +12.7

On the mound, the Iron Man, Joe McGinnity led the staff with a 16-8 record and 3.90 ERA. Down the stretch, he kicked it into overdrive, finishing the season with a 4-0 run and 1.64 ERA in his last 5 starts.

Waffletown will head to Annandale to meet the Atom Smashers in the LDS. The two teams met six times during the regular season with the Syrups sweeping the series 6-0; but as all baseball fans know, the post season is a completely different beast and regular season performances mean nothing in a short playoff series.

A raucous celebration was held at the Spile as Waffletown wrapped up the LDS at home with a 14 inning, 2-1 victory in game 4 to clinch the series 3 games to 1.

While it's a small sample size, for whatever reason, the Syrups owned Atom Smasher's ace Max Scherzer. They faced him once in the regular season, chasing him from that game after 4 innings and 7 runs. In game 1 of the LDS, they once again faced Scherzer, and once again tagged him for 7 runs... but this time those runs came in the first inning as they chased him from the game after only 2/3rds of an inning pitched. (that gave him a total of 4.2 IP, 14 runs, 12 earned, 2 home runs, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts, 31 batters faced, and an ERA of 25.71 against Waffletown this year.)

Waffletown star third baseman, Freddie Lindstrom, earned the LDS MVP award for his 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and .333 average.

The Syrups move on to the LCS to face the top ranked Poop Town Poop Boyz who won 111 games in the regular season. (narrator's comment: might be more creative to call them the Poop Town Fecalators, or something like that... the sight of them makes the other team crap their pants ). During the regular season, the two teams met 7 times, with Poop Town taking the series 4 games to 3.

Congrats on the series win!
I don't know what's more atrocious.....Scherzer's stat line against Waffletown.....or that the Syrups are forced to play in the same league with a team named Poop Boyz. (spelled with a "z" for added immaturity lol)

Go Syrups!

heh.... yeah, anytime I run across teams with names like that it makes me cringe a little.... have a little self respect and give 'em a decent name at least....

down 0-2 in the LCS (had leads in both games but my less than stellar bullpen blew 'em both).... going to take a monumental comeback to pull this one out

The inaugural season came to an end for Waffletown as they fell 4 games to 1 in the LCS. Management is pleased with the first year performance of their squad and look forward to next year in the Bronze league.

The new season is underway in the Bronze league, and Waffletown finds themselves among some familiar faces in the AC Central division, as they share the space with last season's playoff rival Annandale, and fellow Iron league member Asheboro.

The roster is slightly different from opening day of last year, but the same group that finished out the inaugural season for the Syrups. Management hopes the team can continue its solid play into the new league and make another run at the post season.

Thanks to an infusion of funds from new sponsors like Uncle John's Golden Tree Syrup and Mount Washington Bay State Maple Syrup company (narrator note: won 10,000 points in the twipt giveaway monday night), the GM of Waffletown found himself with a plethora of funds to use on players available on the waiver wire; which allowed him to obtain:

SS - Johnny Pesky (1946) - 84, for 9000 points

(granted, Pesky is technically past the WW2 cutoff date, but his career began prior in 1942, so going to use that as my measuring stick)

Ray Chapman has been sent to the reserves to make room. While Pesky is a short-stop, he will be put in at second base to learn that position; and Frankie Frisch will move to the bench as back-up for the infield positions. Pesky should provide a solid defense up the middle with Joe Sewell, and a solid bat on the offensive side.

As the month of May comes to a close, Waffletown has fallen back into their patented style of one-step-forward and one-step-backwards. After a solid start to the season in April (14-8) management, players and fans alike hoped that their consistent play from the previous year had carried over to the new season and would continue through spring and into summer. Those hopes quickly vanished in May as the team struggled to score when pitching was good, and struggled to pitch when scoring was hot. With one game remaining in May, the team sits at 10-16 for the month; leaving them with an overall record of 24-24 for the year, good enough for 3rd place in the AC Central, but a distant 9.5 games back of the lead.

With the addition of Johnny Pesky near the end of the month, management hopes his bat can spark the offense to produce more; and his glove can help stabilize the defense (as soon as learns his new position).

The slide continues for Waffletown as the team has now lost 9 of its last 10 games. The only good point about that stretch, the team earned 100 (of the 190 total points for May) for breaking the 5 game losing streak (only to start a new 4 game slide after the win).

In an attempt to shake things up, management made a move in the early morning hours and picked up a new player from the waiver wire:

SS - Cecil Travis (1941) - 85, for 4000 pp

Frankie Frisch has been sent to the reserves to make room, and Joe Sewell will shift to back-up for the infield positions.

When asked why he keeps picking up shortstops rather than look at other areas of improvement, the Waffletown GM thought for a moment and shrugged, "I like shortstops... they can play most anywhere."

https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/4d5ab420

(narrator's note: even being a historical baseball nerd here, Travis is one of those players I honestly never heard of before this game, so kudos to OOTP. If you haven't heard of him, click the link and read a bit.)

At the All-Star break, Waffletown is still trying to find themselves this season. After struggling through May (10-17), management hoped the team would make a turnaround in June and get back on the winning track. Unfortunately the downward spiral not only continued, but accelerated a bit more and they finished with a 8-19 record for the month. Whether it was the closed-door player-only meeting at the end of June to get everyone on the same page, or just mere coincidence, their fortunes have turned around in July (13-7). Management, players and fans alike hope the new winning ways will continue through the dog days of summer and down the stretch.

On the individual side, Tex Carleton has been one of the lone bright spots, racking up an 11-4 record with a 3.04 ERA (and the team's lone All-Star representative).

Newcomers Johnny Pesky and Cecil Travis have settled in nicely, with Pesky raising his skill at 2B to 81 already after only a couple months of time at the position. Travis has taken over the leadoff role in the batting order with his .305 average.

The Waffletown GM picked up a small upgrade to the bullpen in the early morning hours. While it's not the earth shattering pickup the fans hoped for, every little bit helps.

CL - Jack Quinn (1931) - 73, for 299 pp

Firpo Marberry has been sent to the reserves to make room.

While mulling over what could have been this season and trying to devise a plan to turn around the teams fortunes for next season (as any hopes for a playoff run are slim to none this year), the Waffletown GM was browsing the waiver wire on the off chance there might be an affordable player available to improve the team. One interesting name popped up on the board and the Waffletown GM took a moment to consider the price and then pulled the trigger to bring aboard:

C - Ernie Lombardi (1938) - 87, for 4865 pp

Rollie Hemsley has been sent to the reserves to make room. Rick Ferrell will shift to a back-up position as Lombardi slides into the starting role and the clean-up spot in the batting order.

I don't see Carl Mays anywhere on the roster, so I guess Chapman's removal wasn't due to an untoward incident in batting practice.
