World Baseball Classic

Would it be possible to create a tournament such as this with international sides within the game? And could you expand it to create some sort of qualifying phase as well for other nations?

I've been thinking about the possibility of this pretty much since I heard about 2006.

I think the biggest question is this: how easy is it to create a universe in which real world leagues (MLB, Japan, KBO, Cuba etc) exist alongside user-created fictional leagues? So far, Cubby and Rolen have released their roster sets as quickstarts, making it impossible to set up the fictional league needed to run a WBC alongside the MLB. I'm not sure if they've just done this because it's the easiest way of releasing the set, or if it is the only feasible way. If it is, then I think that poses serious problems for this idea. There's always the option of using the Lahman to get a 2005 MLB import, but I've seen firsthand how bad the stats can be doing that. Ideally, I'd like to use something like C&R's data to put the MLB into this universe. But is that possible -- and if so, how?

After that, I don't think creating a WBC-type tournament would be too hard. I would create a fictional league when setting everything up, including the nations you wanted for your first tournament. Then sim to the offseason (or whenever you choose to hold the tournament). You'd then need to determine the squads for all the participating nations and then edit all of the necessary players onto their national team.

Then it would just be a case of determining the schedule, playing out the games and so on. When finished, you'd edit the playerss back onto their club teams.

Qualification would have to be done through playing exhibition games I suppose. You'd create all the nations needed for the qualifiers, play them out, and then delete the teams that didn't make it for the final tournament.

I haven't tried this out yet, but I think it would be fairly simple to do, after the first hurdle has been gotten over (i.e. how can you combine real-world rosters with fictional leagues?).
