Editor's Note: After sleeping on it, I have realized that Opening Day is not good time to import the League into OOTP 21 because the changes to the A.I. will cause a lot of teams to want to make roster changes and create a bit of chaos. So I will make some time to play this League in OOTP 20 while also completing my other OOTP duties and we will upgrade to OOTP 21 next off season. So Opening Day is right around the corner!

Opening Day!

The Oakland Oaks are here to open the season with a 2 game set. We were 9-5 against them last year and are 34-22 (.607) since 2001. They were 11th in the PCL in scoring with 631 runs (Portland was #3 with 739). They were 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 601 (Portland was #1 with 506). They have not made a lot of additions to their roster; the only significant acquisition was 2B Buddy Potts (30-R) a free agent from San Diego. He batted .274-543-12-61-.747 with 27 SB last year. Gone are CF Greg Wertz (33-R) who hit .243-577-9-54-.643 with 24 SB, SP Danny Colon (34-L) who was 8-18 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 Starts and SP Greg Ware (28-L) who was 17-14 with a 2.33 ERA in 35 starts. Ware won the Cy Young Award in 2003 and finished 2nd in the voting last year.

Oakland Oaks (79-83 .488 33 GB in 4th place in the PCL West last year) at
Portland Beavers (112-50 .691 24 GA Champions of the PCL West last year)

OAK: Billy Wright (29-L 14-11 2.54 last year) All-Star(03)/Gold Glove(01) vs POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 19-4 2.18 last year) CY/All-Star/Gold Glove(03)

Wright was 1-2 in 4 starts against us last year, but pitched well every time and had a 2.79 ERA in 29 IP.

Phillips is only 21 and already has a Cy Young Award hanging on his trophy belt!

Not a good crowd for Opening Day...
The newspapers and radio talk shows have been filled with diatribes about how we have no chance to repeat as division champions without our top winning pitcher of the past two seasons and team leader, Frank Flores.
I guess the fans are buying into the hate talk...

Top of the First:
Buddy Potts lines out hard to center. Steve Fisher takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three! Javy Puente lines a hit to left. Tim Metts draws a walk. Miguel Romero swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to short! 30 pitch inning...

Bottom of the First:
Dave Risinger lines a double down the left field line! George Brock, in his first AB as a Beaver, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Risinger goes to 3rd. Tim Higbee lines a hit to right and Risinger scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to left. Jeff Galka swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines one deep to center, but Bobby Morley runs it down.

Top of the Third:
P Billy Wright grounds one to 3rd, but Jeff Galka throws the ball away for a 2 base error... But the next two strike out and Javy Puente grounds out to 1st, unassisted!

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 2 outs, P Barry Phillips hits a home run to left! 2 to 0, Beavers! If you had Phillips to hit the first home run of the season for the Beavers, you just got a pretty good payday! That is the first home run of his career! He did hit 1 in the minors.

Bottom of the Sixth:
George Brock gets beaned. With Brock on the move, Tim Higbee swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses and Brock gets thrown out at 2nd... Glenn Snowden hits a home run to left! 3 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Ninth:
P Barry Phillips is at 114 pitches. The Bullpen is ready to step in. 3-4-5 up for the Oaks. Javy Puente lines a double to left center. Tim Metts takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Miguel Romero lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with no outs... Bobby Morley lines a hit to center and Puente scores... 3 to 1, Beaver. Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (25-R). Jack Reynolds grounds into a 3-6-1 double play and Metts scores and Romero, the tying run, goes to 3rd. 3 to 2, Beavers. PH Russ Inguaggiato (26-L), who hit .200 with 6 HR in 135 AB last season, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... PH John Shifflett (33-R), a rookie who is 0 for 4 in his career and hit .309 with 12 HR in 433 AB in A Ball last year, grounds out to the pitcher and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 3 to 2

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 8 hits and made no errors

Barry Phillips (W 1-0) went 8+ innings, allowed 2 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. 126 pitches. At bat, he hit a double and a home run!

Billy Wright (L 0-1) went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs, 6 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 3.

SS Dave Risinger hit a double and scored a run. 2B George Brock, in his Beaver debut, went 0 for 3 and got hit by a pitch. 1B Glenn Snowden hit a home run. After 1 day of the season, who leads the PCL in OPS? P Barry Phillips!

For Oakland, RF Javy Puente had 3 hits with a double and scored a run.

Around the League: P Frank Flores (25-R) lost his debut with Minnesota, 4 to 2, at San Antonio.

It is going to take us years to get the people in Portland to remember us from one season to the next...

The Salt Lake City Bees are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. The played a pair of games in Kansas City to open the season and held the Royals to 4 total runs, but only scored once themselves and lost both games. They were one of only 2 teams that we did not have a winning record against last year (Minnesota). We were 4-4 against them and are 15-17 (.469) since 2001. They were 15th in scoring in the PCL last year with 560 runs. They were 15th in fewest runs allowed with 744 and led the League in most HR allowed (161). We allowed the 2nd fewest (84). They finished 71-91 in 7th place in the PCL East last year. They have not made a lot of changes. They did not lose anyone of import and signed a couple of weak hitters.

Salt Lake City Bees (0-2 .000 2 GB in 8th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (1-1 .500 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

SLC: Billie Manganiello (23-R First Major League start) Rookie vs POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 8-7 2.93 last year) CY/All-Star/Gold Glove(03)

Manganiello is making his first Major League start. He is a wild, strikeout pitcher.

Krawczyk was a big pleasant surprise last year and we are skeptical whether he can sustain the performance, but hopeful.

Cliff Clement strikes out! Roger Gandy grounds a double over the 1st base bag and Rizkallah scores from 1st... Tie Game: 2 to 2. It only took 2 games for P Rich Larkin to blow a Save... Dick Singer is walked intentionally... Leo Carranza strikes out looking.

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Larry Lauer (25-L), after a perfect 8th. 4-5-6 up for us. Glenn Snowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tim Higbee lines out to center. A.J. Lee hits a home run to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Salt Lake City Bees (0-3 .000 3 GB in 8th place in the PCL West) at

We faced Pyrrait once last year and he had a no decision, but held us to 1 run and 4 hits in 8 IP.

Marling only has 18 starts for us last year, but led the team in SH and was 2nd in HR allowed, only 1 shy of leading the team.

We make our first road trip of the season, a short 4 game excursion to Milwaukee. The Brewers lost 3 of 4 to San Francisco here over the weekend. We were 5-3 against them last year when they were 80-82 in 5th place in the PCL East. We are 17-15 (.531) against them since 2001. After 1 week of play, they are leading the PCL in scoring with 5.50 runs per game (Portland is 14th with 2.83). The Brewers are hitting .300 as a team and we are at .211. They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.83 per game (Portland is tied for 11th with 4.50). Their run differential is +4 and ours is -10, the 2nd worst in the PCL, though our records are mirror images of each other, both going against the grain.

Portland Beavers (4-5 .444 2 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (5-4 .556 1 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 1-1 6.57) CY/All-Star/Gold Glove(03) vs MIL: Stu Bosco (29-R 1-0 4.50)

Our Cy Young Award winner gave up 7 runs and 5 walks in 4.1 IP last time out to a crappy hitting team and took a loss. Milwaukee is not a crappy hitting team...

Bosco gave up 3 runs in 6 IP against the Seals to get a win in his season debut. Last year, he was 4-10 with a 6.24 ERA and walked 63 in 96.2 IP. Of course, we faced him once and he shut us out....

Top of the First:

George Brock takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Enrique Ramos pops out to center. Kim Springer lines out to short. Glenn Snowden swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right and Brock beats the throw to 3rd. Tim Higbee lines a hit to center and Brock scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Galka lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with 2 outs. Darrell Grigg beats out an infield hit and Snowden scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jerry Suazo pop out to center. We need to trade for another center fielder. I expect the platoon of Suazo and Pemberton to be okay, but if Suazo gets hurt, we have no one that can take his place and Pemberton can barely hit lefties.

Bottom of the First:

Dick Turner grounds out to 2nd. Bob Goemaat pops one foul behind the plate, but our Gold Glover drops the ball for an error... Given a second chance, Goemaat grounds out to 1st, unassisted! We got him out! Could not do it yesterday... Steve Quakenbush pops out to short! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
P Barry Phillips doubles to right center! He is now tied for the team lead in extra base hits with 3! George Brock doubles to left center and P Phillips scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! With 1 out, Kim Springer lines out to 3rd and they double Brock off at 2nd...

Bottom of the Fourth:
Steve Quakenbush takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Greg Hobbs lines a hit to right. The next three make outs!

Top of the Fifth:
Glenn Snowden leads off with a home run to left center! 4 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 1 out, PH Bill Watson (35-R) triples to left center... Dick Turner pops out to left and Watson holds! Bill Goemaat grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Ken Caldwell (28-R), who gave us 5 hits and 2 home runs good for 3 runs in 1.1 IP on Thursday. With 1 out, P Barry Phillips swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. George Brock beats out an infield hit. With 2 outs, Kim Springer clears the bases with a double to left center, but gets thrown out trying to go to 3rd. 6 to 0, Beavers! Springer has now taken over the extra base hit lead on the team by himself.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Greg Hobbs hits a home run to left... 6 to 1, Beavers. Fernando Medina lines a double to left... The Bullpen gets up. Dong-hak Shong pokes a little hit to center... Ron Hill draws a walk to load the bases up with 1 out. Our Bullpen could really use a day off.... Carlos Rice swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to center and the runners hold! PH Lew Beebe (24-S), the rookie who is 1 for 7 in this series, but the 1 was a home run, lines a hit to center and Medina scores... 6 to 2, Beavers. One more batter... Dick Turner grounds out to 1st, 3-1!

Top of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Humberto Munoz (35-R), after a perfect 7th. Darrel Grigg beats out an infield hit. Jerry Suazo doubles to left center. PH Steve Hermanson (27-S) swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to 2nd, but Greg Hobbs boots it and Grigg scores! 7 to 2, Beavers! George Brock walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up with no outs. Enrique Ramos, one of the hitters who has not come to life this game, grounds one to short, but Hobbs drops the throw at 2nd for another error and Suazo scores! 8 to 2, Beavers! Kim Springer swings at the first pitch and makes a bid for a Grand Slam to right, but it is caught on the warning track and Hermanson trots home. 9 to 2, Beavers! Snowden and Higbee make outs.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Leonardo Sanchez (25-R). With 1 out, Bob Goemaat hits his 4th home run of the series to left... 10 to 3, Beavers.

We are back home to play the first place Los Angeles Angels a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home with Kansas City. We were 10-4 against them last year when they finished 79-83 in 5th place in the PCL West. We are 29-27 (.518) since 2001. They are currently 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.60 runs per game (Portland is 10th with 4.10). The Angels are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.30 (Portland is 13th with 5.00). They lead the League in most HR allowed with 16 in 10 games and we are tied for the 2nd most with 12. Their run differential is +3, the best in the West, and ours is -9, 3rd worst in the PCL. They have changed their whole starting infield this season. Their biggest acquisition was 1B Tony Pena (37-R), singed as a free agent, who hit 33 HR in 368 AB for Chicago last year and led the NL in HR from 2001 to 2003. The also signed All-Star SS Alex Garrido (28-R), who hit .273 with 29 SB for Cleveland last year. Their biggest loss was RP Hal Ockey (29-R), the 4-time All-Star closer, who signed as a free agent with San Diego. To take his place, the Angels have signed ex-Beaver Garry Ayers (32-R), who saved 32 games for Brooklyn last year.

Los Angeles Angels (6-4 .600 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (5-5 .500 1 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

LA: Bill Wertz (34-R 1-0 1.80) 3-time All-Star(01-03) vs POR: Bobby Johnson (25-R 0-1 3.75)

Wertz is their #1 starter. He pitched a CG 5 hitter, allowing 1 run at Denver in his last start for a win. He was 1-2 in 4 starts against us last year, but did not pitch a bad game in the lot.

Johnson gave up 4 runs in 6 IP in a no decision last time out.

The San Diego Padres are here to play a 2 game set. They won 2 of 3 at home against Hollywood over the weekend. We were 9-5 against them last season when they finished 88-74 in 2nd place in the PCL West. We are 32-24 (.571) since 2001. They are tied for 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.62 runs per game (Portland is up to a tie for #3 with 4.77). The Padres are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.00 per game (Portland is tied for 9th with 4.46). Their run differential is +8 and ours is +4. They have not made a lot of changes from last season. They let Buddy Potts leave via free agency and traded for a new 3rd baseman. They signed 4-time All-Star closer Hall Ockey from Los Angeles, but they are not using him as their closer.

San Diego Padres (6-7 .462 2 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at

SD: Bobby Wolfe (28-R 0-1 3.75) vs POR: Ron Marling (24-R 0-0 4.50)

Wolfe pitched 7.1 scoreless innings last time out, but did not get a decision. He was 2-0 in 4 starts against us last year and pitched very well in the 2 wins, but we roughed him up in the 2 no decisions.

Marling gave up 4 runs (1 earned) in 3 IP in his lase start in a no decision.

Yesterday was Bobby Johnson's 26th birthday!

The Sacramento Solons, who are off to a pretty good start this season, are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Oakland. We were 10-4 against them last year when they finished 67-95 in 7th place in the PCL West. We are 37-19 (.661), the most wins against any opponent, since 2001. They are 6th in scoring in the PCL with 4.40 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.53). We have scored 2 more runs than they have, even though we have out-homered them, 21 to 3. We are 1st in HR and they are last. The Solons are tied for 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.60 per game (Portland is tied for 8th with 4.20). Their run differential is -3 and ours is +5. They have not changed much from last year.

Sacramento Solons (8-7 .533 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (9-6 .600 1 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Jim Coyne (33-R 0-3 9.88) vs POR: Bobby Johnson (26-R 1-1 3.60)

Coyne is their #1 starter, believe it or not. He has never started more than 4 games in a season in the Majors. He was signed as a free agent from Detroit, where he had a 5.15 ERA in 78.2 IP last year. His last start was his best yet for the Solons and he gave up 5 runs in 5 IP. We have never faced him as a starter.

Johnson gave up 3 runs in 8 IP last time out and got his first win of the season.
