Ducks Baseball

It is opening day in May 2021 at the Ducks Baseball field and the Lancaster Barnstormers are in town. There are about 2500 people in the crowd, about half full. Seems like semi pro baseball can only overcome some of the post COVID fears.

For Tate Redinger, today was his sort of debut into the professional baseball world, in that he gets a paycheck for playing a game that he did for free all his life. He looks to the crowd and sees Brandon there with some random girl that looks like the typical Brandon girl, blonde hair, sunglasses and petite. Also in the crowd is his agent Al who is right behind home plate with an excellent vantage point.

The disappointment today is that Tate is not in the starting line up Dave Block is the rightfielder and that mans Tate is on the pine even with a right hander on the mound. Questions race through the mind about one's self worth. Dave Block was a community college player that tried out for Hofstra and did not make the team This was going to be struggle, and it plays games with one's confidence.

It was now the 5th inning and the Ducks were up 2-1. Tate fiddled with a bat on the bench and was engaged in chat with one of the starting pitchers named Craig Sullivan. Sullivan was a reject of the Braves farm systems and was a Jersey kid, but was a regular member of the Ducks rotation for 2 seasons.

"So what do you think of the game", Sullivan opined

"It is baseball, that is the amazing thing" Tate squinted as he conveyed his thoughts "If you go to an NBA game the difference between Anthony Davis and another 6'10 guy from somewhere else is so vast, but here it is a thin line between being here or in the majors"

Sullivan nodded "I could not agree more, you lose one mile on your fastball as a pitcher and it is a death sentence, I came close to making it to the show in 2017, but there were just not enough injuries to the pitching staff and I was one player away, and this 40 man roster thing makes it impossible to get out of your typecast"

"Typecast?" this had Tate's interest piqued

"Yeah, once you are labeled minor league depth guy you are no longer a prospect and the chances they will add you to the 40 man roster become slimmer and slimmer. So if you become a 28 year old minor league, they assume you are not going to be major leaguer. That is what happened to me, Teheran got injured and they went outside the organization to get a has been before giving me a look" Sullivan had remose in his eyes as if his career was flashing behind him.

Tate was trying not to be too discouraged "I always believe in tomorrow"

The game was deep into the home 8th and the Manager called Tate to bat for the reliever, so Tate got to the on deck circle and looked to the crowd and saw Brandon and then he saw Al. He got nervous, despite playing all his life, it was something about playing and getting paid. Paul Mazza was up, he was the starting shortstop and he just popped up to Rightfield.

Lancaster reliever on the mound was a guy named John Fasanello a tall lanky righty with a herky jerk delivery. Tate got into the batter's box and was super nervous. The first pitch came in and it was outside and the bump called it ball #1. Tate looked to his manager and looked to the sky, next pitch came in and was outside and it was called a strike. The count was 1-1, as the next pitch came in, Fasanello took some speed off and the ball did not break and was right down the middle for strike two. It was now 1-2, next pitch came in was high and Tate swung and it was fouled off to the 3rd base coaching line. Tate took a deep breath and the next pitch came in and it was a nasty slider that caught the black and Tate was struck out. Tate came back to the dugout and felt as small as ever.

The feeling felt eerily similar to his little league days and when you get promoted to the next level and you strikeout and you suddenly think you suck. That is how he felt.

The game was over in 10 innings with Lancaster winning 3-2. Tate saw Brandon and Al waiting for him.

"Dude, you got up man, that was awesome" Brandon was the optimist.

"I got up? I whiffed against a beer league pitcher, I totally suck" Tate was down in the dumps

Al chimed in "just one at bat in this game you suck more than you succeed and still can succeed 30% of the time and be a star. You have 9 more at bats to not suck 3 times."

Those words of wisdom resonated with Tate, it was just one at bat

"Yeah, your agent speaks truth my man, you had to pinch hit in your first at bat, that ain't easy, no time to prepare" Brandon had added

"I guess you guys are right. I just expected to start and play but I guess I have a few months to deal with this. That 3rd strike was filthy"

Al noted "yeah this guy doesn't throw his slider much but he will with 2 strikes, in the majors you will have history on these guys, they have so much data today... this Fasanello guy does not even have a wikipedia page"

Brandon "Have faith bro, by the way this is Natalie, Natalie this is the next star of the Riverhead Racers, Tate Redinger"

"Star? I am a scrub on the Ducks, I would have a hard time starring in a high arc, slow pitch softball league" Tate responded.

"You did look like a player, if that helps" Natalie responded

"That is kind of you to say, but looks are deceiving"

All parties headed to their car and said their goodbyes and Tate had to take the 70 mile lonely drive to Montauk. Satellite radio was playing Tyler Childers and something about this singer soothed him on the way home. He passed the baseball park in Center Moriches on the way home and decided to take a few practice pitches at the batting cage with a new determination for success.

Team Focus #30 - Louisville Bats

The Bats are in their first season in 2021 and they are an awful team in the NL Central. Team is actually owned by the Jack Daniels corporation and the Reds allowed them to be in the league and invited them in the division for a future rivalry

History

2021 - 9-41 10th

1st Draft Picks

2020 Fred Link - SP (41st) (pictured)

Manager - Mike Zoeller - he is a 48 year old from El Paso who was a manager in an independent league, he was the only guy interviewed for this job

Leaders

Average - Evan Longoria (.220) - (FA signing from Tampa Bay Rays)... weird that he decided to come here to be the face of the franchise

Homers - Evan Longoria - (9)

RBI's - Evan Longoria (33)

Stolen Bases - Tyler Wingfield (8) (Rule 5 pick from Boston Red Sox, fictional player from HIllsboro, OR)
