Browsing the waiver wire offerings late one evening after yet another Syrups loss, the GM of Waffletown picked up a small pitching upgrade. Joining the squad:

CL - Joe Beggs (71) - 1940

George Caster will be sent to the reserves to make room.

That was an interesting season for Beggs

As a refugee from the SOM online game, Beggs was always a favorite middle reliever for me. They used his 1940 and 1946 seasons, the latter as a 5-day SP.

This year was much more interesting, he managed a FIP of 2.57 despite a WHIP of 1.266 and a K:BB of 28:25. That is entirely due to his allowing 0 HR in 115 IP, which must be off the charts on their evaluations. Sorting the Lahman database, only two pitchers since 1919 have thrown more innings without allowing a dinger - Allan Sothoron in 1921 (144.2) and Fritz Ostermuller in 1935 (137.2). The all time record is 369.2, by Walter Johnson in 1916.

While it was a dismal second season in Waffletown, management is focusing on the positive points and hopes to continue to build towards a successful championship squad. Positive outlook on the final record: the Syrups avoided losing 100 games Waffletown ended the season with a record of 69-93, and in last place in the NC Central division.

Despite being on a team that dropped 93 games, starting pitcher Boom-Boom Beck managed to have a rather impressive record of 17-9 (and the only starter with a winning record).

At the plate, Buck Herzog was a solid leadoff batter, hitting .290, stealing a league-leading 77 bases, scoring 100 runs and ending with a league-leading war of 6.5

At the plate, Ethan Allen hovered in the top 3 for batting for most of the season before dropping off the pace at the end of the year. He ended the season with a solid .331 average. Baby Doll Jacobson matched his home run output from last season (33) and managed to break the 100 RBI mark, driving in 102 this season.

Management will continue to scour the waiver wire to look for the potential diamond in the rough to help transform the squad into a winning club.

In a late afternoon move, the GM of Waffletown picked up a new outfielder to try and boost the teams offensive output. Joining the squad:

RF - Elmer Flick (89) - 1901

Bing Miller has been sent to the reserves. Ethan Allen will shift to backup the three outfield positions and Flick will start out training up in left field.

While trying to decide what to have for lunch, the GM of Waffletown happened to glance at the expiring waiver offers and was able to nab a new starting pitcher. Joining the squad:

SP - Larry French (86) - 1934

Heinie Meine will be sent to the reserves to make room.

With the squad languishing around the .500 mark, the GM of Waffletown made a deal to bring aboard a new starter to try and bolster the staff. Since the team is clicking along well on the offensive side (ranking near the top in most categories), a boost to the defensive side is the top priority. Joining the squad:

SP - Bucky Walters (89) - 1939

George Blaeholder will be sent to the reserves to make room.

The GM of Waffletown used a good portion of the teams rather tiny war chest of funds to bring aboard a new relief pitcher to try and improve the staff. Joining the squad:

CL - Gordon Maltzberger (85) - 1944

Jack Russell will be sent to the reserves to make room.

When the third season began, management at Waffletown did their best to keep the fans' expectations based in reality. After a rather dismal season in 2022 where they barely avoided losing 100 games, they didn't have much hope the new season would be much different (narrator note: and considering the tanker team in their division loaded with diamond cards who came back down to rookie to farm points, the feeling was justified).

When the dust settled, Waffletown found themselves 43 games back of the division leader. While that sounds like a forgettable season in most cases, this time it meant Waffletown finished in 2nd place with a record of 86-76; good enough to secure the second wild card position.

"Definitely didn't expect to be celebrating with champagne at the end of this season." said first baseman Stuffy McInnis. "But I'll take it." he added with a smile.

McInnis had a fantastic year at the plate, setting a new single season team record for RBIs with 125. Del Bissonette and Eric McNair also set team single season records for home runs with 36 each.

On the mound, newcomer Bucky Walters had a solid season, going 11-2 with a 2.14 ERA; and on the back-end, new closer Gordon Maltzberger racked up 9 saves with a 1.40 ERA in his brief time with the club.

Waffletown will travel to Daytona Beach to face the Tortugas in the wild card match. The two teams met 6 times with Waffletown taking the series 4 games to 2.

Waffletown has to play come-back baseball in the wild card game, scoring 1 run in the 7th, another run in the 8th and 3 runs in the 9th to emerge with the 6-4 victory.

The Syrups move on to face division rival the Hamilton Ding Jackers in the LDS. The two teams met 19 times during the regular season with Hamilton taking the season series 12-7 (narrator note: considering the wide gap in talent between the two teams, those 7 Waffletown victories are huge in my humble opinion).

management of Waffletown couldn't have asked for more from their squad, as they went up against the 129 win team from Hamilton. The Syrups managed to push the series the distance but lost game 5 by the slimmest of margins (4-3).

management looks forward to next season at the Stone level.

In an off-season move, the Waffletown GM made a deal for a new starting pitcher. Joining the squad for next season:

SP - Ted Lyons (88) - 1939

Earl Johnson will be sent to the reserves to make room.

End of season hardware.... Heinie Groh takes home the Platinum Stick award at shortstop (had him training at short for most of the season instead of his usual third)... the additional satisfying part is, he denied the whale a 9 position sweep of those awards (enjoy the little things in life)

In an early season pickup, the GM of Waffletown nabbed a new catcher who should help beef up the defensive side of the game. Joining the squad:

C - George Gibson (85) - 1909

Hank Gowdy will be sent to the reserves to make room.

Just before noon on July 3rd, a new find from the scouting department arrived at The Spile. Management wasted no time in shuffling the roster to make room, and pencil him in as the starter for the game later that evening. Joining the squad:

SP - Eddie Plank (91) - 1905

Jim Bagby will be sent to the reserves to make room.

Thanks to the sale of Roy White (considered keeping him for tournament play, but decided the funds from a sale would be more useful), the GM of Waffletown had some unexpected funds to play with for an upgrade. He wasted no time nabbing a new batter for the offense. Joining the squad:

RF - Chuck Klein (93) - 1930

Del Bissonette will be sent to the reserves to make room and Klein will step in as the designated hitter.

With the club's post season hopes melting away faster than an ice cube on the streets of New Orleans in July, management made a move to bring aboard a new starting pitcher to try and bolster the staff (even though it's the offensive side that has been... well... offensive, and not in a positive way). Joining the squad:

SP - Johnny Beazley (88) - 1942

Joe Beggs will be sent to the reserves to make room.

If an observer were to glance at the offensive rankings, they would be excused if they determined that Waffletown was a sub-par team that would struggle to avoid relegation (11th in runs scored, 11th in batting average, 13th in on base percentage, 11th in OPS, 13th in wOBA). Perhaps a comparison to the "hitless wonders" would be in order here.

Thankfully for Waffletown fans, they were carried this season by their pitching staff and their defense (1st in runs against, 2nd in starters era, 1st in bullpen era, 1st in FIP, 2nd in pitching war, 1st in defensive eff, 1st in zone rating, 1st in errors).

When the dust settled at the end of the regular season, Waffletown celebrated their first division crown in their brief history. After a dismal month of July (8-15), management and fans alike were concerned that the team might slide into relegation territory... but the team turned it around in August (20-8) and kept up their solid play through September (19-8) to reverse their slide and claim the top seed in the NC.

"Heck, I didn't give us much of a shot after July, so anything we get in the playoffs now is just gravy." said first baseman Stuffy McInnis.

Waffletown will await the winner of the Asheboro-Oklahoma wild card match.

Waffletown faced off against division rival Asheboro in the LDS. If there was any concern of a let-down after such a strong push through August and September, there was no sign of it this series as the Syrups rolled to a 3 games to none sweep.

catcher George Gibson was named series MVP. Gibson batted a solid .444 with 1 home run and a club leading 4 RBIs.

Waffletown will host the OC Ocelots in the LCS, which should be an interesting series as it puts the unstoppable force (Ocelots 1st in runs scored) against the immovable object (Syrups 1st in runs against).

narrator's personal rant: while it's legal according to the PT rules, I personally think it's poor sportsmanship to bring aboard 2 brand new starting pitchers in the playoffs who didn't throw a single inning for your squad during the regular season. Dance with the ones that brung ya, as the saying goes.

Why do you think that?

Quote:

Many of us wait for the season-ending PP awards for making the playoffs and various individual accomplishments in order to be able to maximize the amount we have to spend on new talent. The OOTP folks could easily have avoided this by distributing all awards points AFTER the playoffs are complete. But they chose not to do it, so why should we not do our best to win the playoff series we just qualified for?

There are analogous things that go on in the World Cup qualifiers, where a strong team that wins its first two games in its pool often lies down in order to try to manipulate its spot in the playoff bracket or to ensure that the 2nd best team in it pool doesn't qualify for the bracket at all. If it's OK for this stuff to go on in the biggest sporting event in the world, where the results of the event can mean tens of millions of dollars to many of the players involved, why not here?
