The defending champion Richmond Robins are here to play a short 2 game set and close out this miserable month of April. They swept Orlando at home in 4 games over the weekend. P Ernesto Loyola (23-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and P John Lombardi (28-R) was called up. The quote when we traded for him in April: "A bum for a bum. No picture warranted. ....He will be 14th on our Starting Pitcher depth chart." Well, he is the only one pitching well for Daytona (A). He is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 3 starts.

Orlando Juice (9-14 .391 9 GB tied for 6th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (9-14 .391 9 GB tied for 6th place in the Southern Division)

ORL: Manny Martinez (31-R) (2-2 3.06 ERA 32.1 IP, 30 H, 3 HR, 8 BB, 30 SO) vs.
JAX: Jose Azamar (25-R) (1-1 2.53 ERA 21.1 IP, 20 H, 1 HR, 9 BB, 13 SO) Rookie

Martinez is their #1 starter. He was 9-6 with a 3.10 ERA in 162.2 IP last year as a Jacksonville Jay. We traded him to the Juice for RF Ray McDonald. This is the first time we have faced him.

Azamar was our 8th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft, which is only 8 rounds long..... He is making his Major League debut today. We do not expect much, but who knows?

Top of the First:
Danny Stewart swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. Cal Doty bounces out to 1st, unassisted, and Stewart goes to 2nd. Jack Washburn flies out to left. Ray McDonald swings at the first pitch and hits one hard and deep to left, but Rafael Jimenez makes a running catch....

Bottom of the First:
Fred Heff swings at the first pitch and triples to center... You know, if you are vigilant with your hoeing and are careful in your watering, vegetable marrows can grow quite large.... Keith Meyer hits a home run to left... 2 to 0, Mules. Leo Toruno lines a hit to left... Nestor Gonzalez pops out to right. Rafael Jimenez strikes out. Roger Beaudin grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Second:
Steve Gress grounds a double over the 1st base bag.... With 1 out, P Dave Whipple grounds a hit to right and Gress scores... 3 to 0, Mules. Our team is not as bad as they have been playing. We should be scoring a lot more runs and allowing a lot fewer.... But the baseball gods are unkind to us for some reason... With 2 outs, Kieth Meyer triples to right and P Whipple scores... 4 to 0, Mules.

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Danny Stewart takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. A wild pitch sends him to 2nd. Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Another wild pitch moves them to 2nd and 3rd. Jack Washburn grounds out to the pitcher and the runners hold... Ray McDonald grounds out to 2nd... How can ANY team be as futile as we are? Even the 2001 Jays, who used Garrett Bender as a cleanup hitter in a lot of games, for crying out loud, scored a full run more per game than we are this season....

Top of the Fifth:
Garrett Bender swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Our second of the game... With 1 out, Danny Stewart lines a hit to right. Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up. Jack Washburn strikes out looking on 3 pitches.... Ray McDonald pops out to center....

Top of the Sixth:
Marty Eades pokes a rare hit to center! With 1 out, Bart Daw hits a home run to left center!! 4 to 2, Mules.

Top of the Seventh:
Cal Doty grounds a hit to right. Jack Washburn swings at a 3-2 pitch and loops a hit to right and Doty heads for 3rd. The throw by Fred Heff is into the dugout and Doty scores! 4 to 3, Mules. Ray McDonald draws a walk. Marty Eades takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with no outs! That does it for P Dave Whipple. New Pitcher: Jim Sutton (33-L) who is 1-0 with 2 SV and a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 IP. He was 2-4 with 3 SV and a 2.31 ERA in 78 IP last year. Charlie Faber swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a force at home, 4-2... Bart Daw nearly hits his second home run of the game, but it is caught on the warning track in center and McDonald trots home and Eades goes to 3rd. Tie Game: 4 to 4! A wild pitch scores Eades! 5 to 4, Jays!

Top of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Al Moser (35-R), after a scoreless 8th. With 1 out, Marty Eades bloops a hit to right. Pinch-runner: Rob Worms (30-R). He steals 2nd! With 2 outs, they walk Bart Daw intentionally. PH Brian Porter (35-R) clears the bases with a triple to center!! 7 to 4, Jays!

Won - 7 to 4

As exhausting a win as I have ever had....
Memphis loaded the bases up with 2 outs in both the 8th and 9th innings, but P Roger Wallace (27-R) got the final out both times!

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Memphis had 11 hits and made 1 error

It is the 1st time we have had 10 hits in 11 games....

Del Warwick (W 3-3) went 7 innings, allowed 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 6. After giving up the triple to Keith Meyers in the 2nd inning to make the score, 4 to 0, he retired 14 batters in a row.
LHP Albert Davies (H 1) got 2 outs and allowed 2 hits.
RHP Roger Wallace (SV 1) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.

PR Rob Worms stole a base and scored a run. SS Bart Daw hit his 2nd home run of the season, was walked intentionally, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. C Garrett Bender had a hit and a walk. Yesterday was Johnny Groom's 26th birthday!

Trudy the Trainer gave us the good news yesterday that P Dale Gilchrist (24-R) is ready to pitch, so he was activated from the DL and P John Lombardi (28-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) without having thrown a pitch for the Jays.

We are back home to play the Providence Steamrollers a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games at home with Indianapolis. We were 3-5 against them last season when they finished 79-83 in 7th place in the Northern Division. They are 8th in scoring with 3.96 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 2.89). They are 2nd in HR with 25 and we are 10th with 16. The Steamrollers are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.63 per game (Jacksonville is up to #15 with 4.44). Their run differential is +9 and ours is -42, still the worst in the League.

Providence Steamrollers (13-14 .481 5 GB in 4th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (11-16 .407 9 GB tied for 6th place in the Southern Division)

PROV: Juan Estrada (29-L) (3-1 4.40 ERA 30.2 IP, 33 H, 3 HR, 14 BB, 19 SO) vs.
JAX: Ernie Jones (27-R) (3-0 2.67 ERA 33.2 IP, 29 H, 1 HR, 13 BB, 13 SO)

We have only faced Estrada once before, but he is a lefty, so he beat us, giving us 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts in 8 innings. He is the first lefty we have faced in over 3 weeks.

It has been 3 weeks since Gilchrist last pitched and he went 7 scoreless innings and allowed 5 hits and 1 walk with 8 strikeouts before getting injured.

RF Rob Worms (30-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and CF Gary McKellar (33-R) was called up. McKellar, who sometimes has slacker issues, is currently getting good reports from the Daytona coaches.

Providence Steamrollers (15-14 .514 5 GB in 4th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (11-18 .379 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

PROV: Norm Kent (36-R) (0-1 3.92 ERA 20.2 IP, 20 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 6 SO) vs.
JAX: Del Warwick (28-L) (3-3 4.10 ERA 41.2 IP, 41 H, 5 HR, 10 BB, 26 SO) Gold Glove

Kent was 9-5 with a 3.74 ERA in 19 starts and 113 IP last year. He is 1-0 in 2 starts against us in his career with an 0.60 ERA. 15 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 7 BB, 4 SO.

Warwick gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a win. The Steamrollers are not a good matchup for him with all their right-handed hitters....

Providence Steamrollers (15-15 .500 5 GB tied for 4th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (12-18 .400 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

PROV: Larry Bowling (24-R) (3-1 2.00 ERA 45 IP, 45 H, 1 HR, 9 BB, 33 SO) vs.
JAX: Danny Coreano (24-L) (3-3 2.77 ERA 39 IP, 27 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 23 SO)

Bowling is their #1 starter. He was 16-13 with a 2.92 ERA in 252.2 IP last year. He is 3-0 in 3 starts against us in his career with an 2.35 ERA. 23 IP, 26 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 10 SO.

Coreano gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks with 2 strikeouts in 6 innings last time out in a loss. The Steamrollers are not a good matchup for him, either, with all their right-handed hitters.... But we have no alternative, except to call up a bum from Daytona (A).

Attendance: 6,134

Top of the First:
Jimmy Reed strikes out! Juan Duarte grounds a hit to right. Bill Brown pops out to right. Gus Milam swings at the first pitch and lines out to left!

Bottom of the First:

Danny Stewart grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Charlie Faber grounds out to short... I wish we had a better #2 hitter... Cal Doty draws a walk. He steals 2nd! Ray McDonald strikes out looking....

Top of the Second:

T.R. Hunter pokes a hit to center. Doug Bowers lines out to center, but Danny Coreano calls out Trudy the Trainer.... And our Bullpen is spent and has nothing but left-handers who are fresh.... New Pitcher: Albert Davies (26-L). Sorry, Albert... A wild pitch sends Hunter to 2nd... Andy Povich flies out to deep center and Hunter tags up and moves to 3rd. Kevin Yockey lines a hit to left center and Hunter scores... 1 to 0, Steamrollers. And that will give P Coreano a loss, because Davies will give up an bunch more runs...

Bottom of the Second:
Jack Washburn lines a hit to left and steals 2nd! If he can score, that will get P Coreano off the hook! But the next three make outs....

Top of the Third:
Jimmy Reed walks on 4 pitches and gets bunted to 2nd... P Albert Davies need to take his lumps... Reed tries to steal 3rd and C Garrett Bender throws him out! Billy Brown lines a hit to right. Gus Milam draws a walk. T.R. Hunter strikes out on 3 pitches!

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Andy Povich beats out an infield hit... The only lefty in the lineup and he cannot get him out... With 2 outs, P Larry Bowling, as advertised, grounds a hit to left and Povich beats the throw to 3rd and P Bowling takes 2nd. Jimmy Reed lines a hit to left and both runners score.... 3 to 0, Steamrollers.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Ray McDonald doubles to right center. He steals 3rd... Why are we trying to steal 3rd so often lately? Jack Washburn lines a hit to center and McDonald scores! 3 to 1, Steamrollers. Washburn steals 2nd! With 2 outs, Bart Daw lines a hit to right center and Washburn beats the throw home! 3 to 2, Steamrollers.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, they make a pitching change. P Larry Bowling is not a high stamina guy and he threw 124 pitches last time out. New Pitcher: Dennis Hughes (29-R), who gave us 3 runs in 1.2 innings yesterday. Marty Eades draws a walk. Bart Daw swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to left!! 4 to 3, Jays!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Jerry January (36-L), who got the Save with perfect inning on Thursday. With 2 outs, Jack Washburn hits a home run to right! Off a lefty! 5 to 3, Jays!

In the Top of the 8th, after P Johnny Groom throws 1 pitch to Billy Brown, the skies open up and a torrential rain begins! After a while, the umpires call the game!

Won - 5 to 3

We had 10 hits and made no errors
Providence had 7 hits and made no errors

Danny Coreano went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, no walks and struck out 1.
LHP Albert Davies went 3.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP. 60 pitches. He is still on probation, even though he has a 7.71 ERA.... We keep having to pitch him in unfavorable conditions....
RHP Johnny Groom (W 1-0) pitched 2.1 perfect innings with 1 strikeout. at bat, he went 2 for 2!

Larry Bowling went 5.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.
RHP Dennis Hughes (L 2-3 BS 1) got 2 outs, gave us 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 home run and 2 walks.

LF Cal Doty had a hit and a walk and stole a base. RF Ray McDonald hit a double, stole a base and scored a run. 1B Jack Washburn had 3 hits with his 4th home run of the season, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. He now leads the team in HR and SB. 3B Marty Eades had a hit and a walk and scored a run. SS Bart Daw had 2 hits with his 3rd home run and had 3 RBI. He is now tied for the team lead in RBI with 15.

Trudy's report on Danny Coreano is elbow tendinitis and she expects him to be out about 7 weeks.... There goes the most pleasant surprise of the season.... I should have called up a bum from Daytona (A) to make the start....

We put P Danny Coreano (24-L) on the DL and recalled P John Lombardi (28-R).

We are in Columbus, Ohio, to play the Explorers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Orlando over the weekend. We were 5-3 against them last year when they finished 86-76 in 5th place in the North. They are 12th in scoring with 3.55 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #14 with 3.23!). The Explorers are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 3.94 (Jacksonville is #14 with 4.39). Their run differential is -12 and ours is -36, now 2nd worst to New Orleans!

Jacksonville Jays (13-18 .419 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Columbus Explorers (13-18 .419 7 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Dale Gilchrist (24-R) (1-1 5.00 ERA 9 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 12 SO) vs.
COL: Bill Halpin (26-R) (2-3 4.29 ERA 35.2 IP, 33 H, 2 HR, 15 BB, 11 SO)

Gilchrist is going on 3 days rest, but he only threw 11 pitches last time out and did not retire a batter in a loss... We are hoping that was because of his 3 week layoff and not because the injuries have turned him into mush....

Halpin was 13-9 with a 3.20 ERA last year in 39 G with 24 starts and 182.2 IP. We have never faced him as a starter.

Our team is designed to murder pitchers like him...
But we got shut out...

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Columbus had 10 hits and made no errors

I am so sick of this team not hitting....
And when we do hit, they do stupid crap like getting thrown out trying to steal 3rd base when we are down 4 to 0 in the 6th inning (Cal Doty).....

Editor's Note: I have done all I can with the Strategy Sliders to try to prevent this, to no avail. It was a sad day when the Strategy Sliders were dumbed down. There is so much less you can control now....

RP Albert Davies (26-L) was sent to Daytona (A) and RP Hal Bradford (26-L) was recalled. Bradford has pitched 6 scoreless innings since being sent down.

We are in Birmingham to play a 3 games series over the weekend. The Barons just split 4 games here with Syracuse and scored 30 runs off the best pitching staff in the MLB. We split a pair of games here to begin the season. They lead the League in scoring with 4.57 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.03). The Barons are 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.60 per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 4.29). Their run differential is -1 and ours is -44, now the worst in the League.

Jacksonville Jays (13-22 .371 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Birmingham Barons (17-18 .486 5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: John Lombardi (28-R) (2-0 1.51 ERA 35.2 IP, 30 H, 0 HR, 8 BB, 15 SO in A Ball) vs.
BIRM: Cesar Rodriguez (29-R) (3-3 3.25 ERA 44.1 IP, 39 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, 22 SO) All-Star(01)

Lombardi was 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 5 starts for Indianapolis last year, but gave up 6 HR in 32 IP. And the Barons have plenty of pop in their lineup.... He is making his Jay debut today.

Rodriguez was 7-13 with a 3.76 ERA last year in 189 IP. He is 2-0 in 3 starts against us in his career with a shutout and a 2.35 ERA. 23 IP, 21 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 19 SO.

New Pitcher: Don Kneip (36-L), of the Knights who say Kneip. He is 0-2 with a 4.86 ERA in 16.2 IP. We go down in order...

Bottom of the Twelfth:
The big boys, Montgomery and Acevedo, are up this inning... They go down in order!

Top of the Thirteenth:

With 2 outs, P Roger Wallace grounds one to 3rd and 1B Jim Montgomery drops the ball for an error, but Marty Eades grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the Thirteenth:

Jose Fernandez lines a hit to right center... RF Bob Marks (24-R), a rookie who is batting .236 with 8 RBI in 106 AB and was the #9 prospect this Spring, grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!! C Shigeru Nagata (25-R), another rookie, who the Barons traded for from Providence this Winter, skies one to center, but Danny Stewart muffs the catch for a 2 base error.... His first error of the season... P Don Kneip has to bat and he is 2 for 8 in his career... He strikes out!

Top of the Fourteenth:
We go down in order to this bum....

Bottom of the Fourteenth:
The Bullpen is up and ready, but no one is fresh... Top of their order up. They go down in order!

Top of the Fifteenth:
We go down in order with 2 strikeouts...

Bottom of the Fifteenth:

Sergio Acevedo to lead it off.... He grounds out to the pitcher! With 2 outs, Jose Fernandez lines a hit to right. Call to the Bullpen: All-Star Bill Grant (32-L). Rookie Bob Marks grounds out to short!

Top of the Sixteenth:
This is now the longest game of the season! We go down in order yet again to this bum... He would have 5 perfect innings pitched now, except P Roger Wallace reached on an error....

Bottom of the Sixteenth:
They go down in order!

Top of the Seventeenth:
This is now tied for the longest Jay game of all-time! With 1 out, Junior Danielson draws a walk. Can we get a hit off this bum, please! He is now in his 6th inning, for goodness' sake! C Don Kern swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Danielson goes to 2nd. That does it for P Don Kneip. New Pitcher: John Holcomb (31-L), an even suckier lefty, who is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in 13.1 IP with a 2.32 WHIP and he is NOT fresh. His loss came against us on Opening Day. Dennis Brown flies out to left...

Bottom of the Seventeenth:

2-3-4 up for them and here it ends, I am afraid.... Ken Kelly swings at the first pitch and triples to left.... Jim Montgomery flies out to center and Kelly tags up and beats the throw home....
