Monthly Wrap-Up
Newport extended its lead to 6 games, but the loss of ace Edward Davis is a big hurdle to overcome. Manager Troy Ford again moved Bo Pratt to the bullpen, and he has racked up 7 saves in a month. The big surprise for the Navigators has been 26-year-old catcher Terry Williams, who was elevated to the starting role after the departure of Dave Bartlett in the offseason. He won the Batter of the Month award for June and currently has the highest batting average in the CBL.

Capital City has the best chance to catch Newport, as they haven’t dealt with as many major injuries. Liberty still has the top offense, but the loss of Mike Wiedle has had a big impact. Additionally, Bartlett hasn’t been his dominating self, and he is only hitting .274 with 16 HR. At 9 games back, they are probably out of it.

In other big news, Liberty’s Bill Fletcher, who was the Rookie of the Month for April and May, suffered a career-ending injury. This year’s #1 draft pick, Nathan Roberson of Portsmouth, was slotted in to the lineup immediately and won the June Rookie of the Month award.

Players of the Week
June 6 – RF Ken Bradley, PC, 11-24, 2 HR, 4 RBI
June 13 – C Terry Williams, NEW, 13-26, 5 HR, 12 RBI
June 20 – 1B Kyle Bailey, NEW, 10-17, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R
June 27 – LF Vincent Robinson, IRO, 10-20, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 9 R

Players of the Month
Batter – C Terry Williams, NEW, .359, 10 HR, 27 RBI, 16 R, 4 BB
Pitcher – SP Emery Murdock, PC, 4-0, 2.05 ERA, 44 IP, 27 K
Rookie – LF Nathan Roberson, POR, .287, 0 HR, 10 RBI, 16 R

Top Performances
Batting – June 6 – C Spencer Warren, IRO vs. LIB, 3-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 3 BB
Pitching – June 5 – SP Earl Gordon, PC vs. CC, 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

Major Transactions
June 12 – Trade: Irondale gets 36-year-old MR Melvin Evans, Portsmouth gets 22-year-old SP Thomas Cooper (#17 prospect)

Draft Highlights
#1 – Portsmouth – 3B/LF Nathan Roberson, 23, Jefferson State
Roberson is a stud prospect that should be a top leadoff hitter for years to come. He hits for contact, has a great eye, and elite speed. He started playing immediately for Portsmouth and won the Rookie of the Month for July.

#2 – Irondale – 1B Jason Coffman, 19, Erica Valley HS (Jefferson)
Coffman is a long-term project with the potential to be an elite slugger. He is below average on defense and on the basepaths.

#3 – Liberty – RF Nick Wallace, 20, Washington A&M
Wallace projects as an above average hitter that can play 1B or either corner outfield position at a decent level.

#4 –Park City – SP Bernardo Guzman, 20, University of Washington
Guzman has good talent, but only 2 plus pitches.

#5 – Capital City – C Jon Lyons, 21, Washington Tech
Lyons should be solid on offense and defense, with the ability to play both C and 1B.

#6 – Newport – SP John Anderson, 22, Washington State
Anderson has 3 above average pitches, 1 average pitch, and excellent stamina. He projects as a #2 or #3 starter if he fulfills his potential.

Major Injuries
June 5 – RF Jose Guzman, CC, out for 6 weeks due to sprained thumb
June 6 – MR Larry Holmes, LIB, out for 3 months due to elbow inflammation
June 9 – SP Chris Brown, POR, out for 8 weeks due to oblique strain
June 13 – 3B Mike Wiedle, LIB, out for 6-7 weeks due to separated shoulder
June 19 – SP Edward Davis, NEW, out for 8 weeks due to strained oblique
June 26 – SS Bill Fletcher, LIB, career over due to concussion

Get to know…Tad Gill

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982

Tad Gill, 33, is the shortstop for the Newport Navigators. He was born in Union Beach, Jackson, a town of about 5,000 people halfway between Fremont and Sussex. Gill started his baseball career in 1968 after attending high school at Sussex Central. In the amateur leagues, he was a good player, but he had a career year in 1977, setting the single-season record for home runs with 39. He also led the league in home runs and RBI for the only time in his career.

Tad Gill has always had elite power, but his other batting skills are about average. He is a good runner and an average fielder. Gill is not much of a leader, but he has a great work ethic.

In the CBL, Gill has been the Player of the Week twice, and he finished 3rd in voting for the 1981 Outstanding Hitter Award. He has also been a part of 2 championship teams with Newport, and he has a good chance to make it a third this year. Gill has a career .300 batting average, 69 homers, and 204 RBI. While he’s not at the top of any career leaderboard, he is currently 2nd all-time in HR, behind only Dave Bartlett and one ahead of Steven Carney and Guillermo Reyes. He is also 2nd in triples, OPS, and VORP, and he is 3rd in RBI.

Games of the Month
June 1 – Park City @ Portsmouth
Park City’s Dave Hill tied the game 5-5 with a solo home run in the 9th, but Portsmouth answered with a Justin Cannon sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, scoring Tim MacIntosh to win 6-5.

June 7 – Liberty @ Irondale
Trailing 6-3 going to the 9th, Liberty rallied, with pinch-hitter Mike Pryor hitting a go-ahead grand slam. The Giants added another run to win 8-6.

June 8 – Capital City @ Liberty
For the second day in a row, Mike Pryor was the hero, hitting a walk-off 2-run single to give the Giants a 6-5 win.

June 9 – Portsmouth @ Irondale
Irondale rallied in the bottom of the 9th, scoring 4 runs to win 4-3.

June 10 – Park City @ Newport
It was a great pitching matchup of Earl Gordon versus Edward Davis. Sixto Benvijes hit a solo home run off of Gordon in the 4th for the only run of the game as Newport won 1-0. Davis pitched 8 scoreless innings, and Bo Pratt pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save.

June 10 – Capital City @ Liberty
22-year-old Juan Jose Molina hit a walk-off 2-run home run in the 9th to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. It was Molina’s first career homer.

June 12 – Portsmouth @ Capital City
Pinch-hitter Kent Ball hit a walk-off 3-run homer to give Capital City a 9-6 win.

June 12 – Liberty @ Park City
Park City’s John Bailey hit a walk-off solo homer to give the Patriots a 4-3 win.

June 15 – Liberty @ Portsmouth
Liberty scored 3 runs in the 9th to take a 6-4 lead, but the Clippers answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring 3 of their own for a 7-6 win.

Monthly Wrap-Up
In a stunning turn of events, the Capital City Senators have overtaken the 2-time defending champion Newport Navigators for a 2 game lead in the CBL. The Senators swept the Navigators in both 3-game series between the teams in July, going 6-0. There are now 7 games to play, and the Senators’ magic number is 6. On August 2, the two teams will meet for one final 3-game series in Newport, which will be crucial in deciding this year’s champion.

If Newport can’t come back, Troy Ford’s decision to move Bo Pratt to the bullpen will be a lightning rod for criticism. With Edward Davis out, the Navigators’ rotation has struggled, and they only have 7 games to correct all of their issues.

Players of the Week
July 4 – LF Gregory Metoyer, PC, 11-26, 0 HR, 2 RBI
July 11 – 3B Sixto Benvijes, NEW, 13-34, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R

July 25 – 3B Howard Howard, CC, 13-30, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R
August 1 – 1B Kyle Bailey, NEW, 10-22, 2 HR, 9 RBI

Players of the Month

Pitcher – CL Ray Gilliam, LIB, 3-1, 6 S, 1.06 ERA, 17 IP, 17 K
Rookie – LF Nathan Roberson, POR, .287, 0 HR, 11 RBI

Major Injuries
July 7 – 2B Mark Jones, PC, out for 5-6 weeks due to strained oblique
July 8 – LF Gregory Metoyer, PC, out for 5-6 weeks to herniated disc (back)
July 10 – 3B Sergio Gutierrez, CC, out for 4 weeks due to strained hamstring

Get to know...Guillermo Reyes

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982

This month, we’re looking at 25-year-old 1B Guillermo Reyes of Capital City. Reyes was born in Irondale, Monroe, and he attended Irondale Prep HS. He started his baseball career in 1976, but he was never an impact player in the amateur leagues.

Reyes is a great power hitter, but his other batting attributes are about average. He is a good fielder at both 1B and 3B, and while he has below average speed, he is a very good base stealer. Reyes is very smart, a hard worker, and he is popular in the clubhouse.

Guillermo has at least 20 HR and 75 RBI in each of his 3 years in the CBL, but his career batting average is only .252. He has won 2 Player of the Week awards, 2 Batter of the Month awards, and he was the 1981 Gold Glove Award winner at 1B. He is currently the career leader in at-bats, RBI, and strikeouts, and he is 3rd in HR. This year, he is leading the league in RBI and tied for 2nd in HR.

Games of the Month
July 1 – Capital City @ Newport
A Tad Gill homer in the bottom of the 8th tied it at 1-1. In the top of the 15th, Harry Cooper singled and Guillermo Reyes hit a 2-run homer. Newport got a run in the bottom of the inning, but Capital City won 3-2.

July 3 – Capital City @ Newport
Capital City’s Sergio Gutierrez hit a 2-run single in the 13th inning to give the Senators a 4-2 win and a series sweep over the first place Navigators.

July 6 – Liberty @ Newport
Liberty’s Juan Jose Molina broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the 10th. Sixto Benvijes led off the bottom of the inning with a triple, but closer Ray Gilliam was able to get out of the jam, retiring Newport’s 3 best hitters: Kyle Bailey, Tad Gill, and Terry Williams. Liberty won 1-0.

July 6 – Irondale @ Capital City
Irondale scored 5 in the 1st inning, but the Senators clawed back, eventually scoring 2 in the 9th for a 6-5 win.

July 12 – Capital City @ Liberty
Liberty’s Miguel Molina hit a walk-off 2-run homer off of closer Myles Brooks to give the Giants a 5-4 win.

July 16 – Liberty @ Park City
Park City’s Jim Lake hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-3 Patriots win.

July 22 – Capital City @ Irondale
Capital City’s Terry Hall hit a solo homer in the 9th to give the Senators a 2-1 lead, but Irondale’s Vincent Robinson answered with a walk-off 2-run homer off of Myles Brooks in the bottom of the 9th for a 3-2 Steelers win.

July 29 – Liberty @ Capital City
Capital City’s Guillermo Reyes hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the 9th to give the Senators a 4-2 win.

1983 ALMANAC

Season Wrap-Up
Capital City won 2 of 3 against Newport and 5 of 7 overall in August to claim its first CBL championship. Newport struggled down the stretch, winning only 3 of 7 in August to finish 4 games back. Newport’s big losses this offseason will be Bo Pratt and Sixto Benvijes, as the Navigators don’t enough room in the budget to re-sign either of them. We will see if the team that gets Pratt for next year wants him as a starter or closer.

Top Performances
Batting – August 7 – C Craig Shields, POR vs. PC, 4-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R
Pitching – August 1 – SP Chad Hansford, IRO vs. NEW, 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 10 K, 2 BB

Major Transactions

Games of the Month
August 1 – Newport @ Irondale
Newport’s Bob Cole pitched a great game, but Chad Hansford was even better, and the Steelers took the game 1-0. Newport fell to 3 GB of Capital City going in to the final 3-game head-to-head matchup.

August 2 – Capital City @ Newport
Capital City came back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring 3 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th to win 6-4. The Senators extended their lead to 4 games with 5 to play.

August 3 – Capital City @ Newport
Newport’s William McKinney pitched a gem, as the Navigators won 1-0 to keep themselves in contention.

August 4 – Capital City @ Newport
Capital City took a 3-1 lead to the bottom of the 9th. Newport scored a run and had runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out, but closer Myles Brooks slammed the door on the Navigators, clinching the championship for the Senators.

August 6 – Park City @ Portsmouth
It was a pitcher’s duel between Earl Gordon and Kelvin Taylor, and it went to extra innings tied 2-2. In the 11th, Park City scored a run, but Portsmouth answered with a 3-run homer by Justin Cannon to win 5-3.

The free agency period started today, and several big names are testing the waters. For the second straight year, the Outstanding Hitter Award winner (Jim Lake) is a free agent. Other big names include Bo Pratt, Kevin Miller, and Mike Wiedle. Pratt was the center of controversy in Newport this year, as many people criticized manager Troy Ford’s use of him. He was switched back and forth between starter and closer over the last 2 years by Ford, the 2-time Manager of the Year. The public criticism became so intense this year, Newport chose not to renew Ford’s contract, and he will now be the Hitting Coach for Park City. Pratt will get a fresh start with another team, and it will be interesting to see what role he will play.

Two of the greatest baseball players in Newland history, Rich Cates and Sherman Deal, announced their retirements from the CBL. Park City swept the Outstanding Hitter and Outstanding Pitcher awards, despite finishing below .500.

The 1983 CBL baseball cards have been released here.

Park City continued to add talent, signing Bo Pratt to a 4-year deal. Pratt will be the highest paid player in the league, making $24 million per year, and they plan to use him as a closer. Liberty also added 2 star players, and the additions of Sixto Benvijes and Kevin Miller will help make up for the losses of Mike Wiedle and Ben Dixon, respectively. Dixon himself is still a free agent, as teams are concerned about his torn rotator cuff. He is scheduled to return in about 3 months, and if he comes back healthy, he will certainly garner some interest then.

This year’s Spring Training was dominated by the Irondale Steelers, who finished 18-6. No other team finished above .500. The Steelers look to be a much improved club this year, but we’ll see if they can continue their success during the season.

SP Ben Dixon is still recovering from the torn rotator cuff he suffered last year, and no team has signed him yet. He’s had 3 solid years with the Giants, and it will be interesting to see who might add him midseason.

This year, we are predicting a dead heat between Irondale and defending champion Capital City. Despite the lack of star power for the Steelers, they are a balanced team with no glaring weaknesses. They have yet to finish higher than 4th, but we think they might be able to put it together this year. Capital City still has the best pitching staff in the game, and they have a great chance to repeat as champions.

Portsmouth has built an outstanding offensive team, with 5 of the top 10 hitters. Their pitching is finally not the worst in the league, so Clippers fans have a reason to be optimistic this year. Although they have finished last in each of the 3 years of the CBL, we are picking them to finish 3rd, 2 games back.

Park City has the worst pitching in the league, to go along with the least amount of hitting power. They have good contact hitters that should make their offense around average, and they are basically an average team right now.

Newport has fallen a long way since back-to-back championships in 1981-82. We predict they will have the worst offense and the second worst pitching, and they will finish 5th.

We are picking Liberty to finish last. Despite a league-high payroll for each of the last 3 years, they have failed to finish higher than 3rd. This year could be their worst yet.

Monthly Wrap-Up
The Park City Patriots got off to a hot start at 16-6, but they lost 4 of their last 6 to finish the month at 18-10. They are a game up on Newport, but it’s difficult to imagine them being able to keep this up. They have several players that are severely overachieving, and it seems likely they will regress over the remainder of the season. Ken Bradley, Earl Gordon, and Bo Pratt are legitimate stars, but the Patriots don’t have much talent behind them.

Newport has played well, led by the top pitching duo in the league in Edward Davis and William McKinney. With an offense led by Kyle Bailey and Tad Gill, they may be able to keep up their success if the rest of their role players continue to contribute. Capital City is only 3 games back and are well within striking distance. Preseason co-favorite Irondale has struggled at 6 games back.

Get to know…William McKinney

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982, 1983

Newport’s William McKinney has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the CBL. At 27 now, he was only 24 when the CBL started, and he is just entering his prime. Born in Irondale, he started his professional career after graduating from Irondale South High School. In the amateur leagues, he went 33-34, but he showed excellent potential.

McKinney has a lot going for him, as a leader and an overall good clubhouse guy. He works hard, is intelligent, and is well-liked. He doesn’t have any real weaknesses except for his changeup, but he has an outstanding sinker and slider, which he primarily relies on.

After an injury-shortened 1981 season, he has pitched extremely well the last 2 seasons, finishing as the runner-up for the Outstanding Pitcher Award in both years. In the first month of 1984, he has continued his excellent performance, winning his second Pitcher of the Month award. He is now 32-11 with a 2.60 ERA with 432 Ks and 152 BB. He is 2nd on the career leaderboard for strikeouts and tied for 2nd in wins, behind teammate Edward Davis. He is also 2nd in career ERA, behind Bo Pratt and ahead of Davis.

Games of the Month
April 1 – Capital City @ Newport
Two of the league’s top pitchers battled on opening day, as Newport’s Edward Davis outdueled Capital City’s Roosevelt Jones for a 2-1 victory.

April 3 – Irondale @ Park City
Irondale scored twice in the 9th to tie the game at 6, but Ken Bradley hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Patriots the win.

April 6 – Newport @ Portsmouth
It was a great pitcher’s duel, as Edward Davis took on youngster Kelvin Taylor. Davis was great, giving up 1 run on 3 hits in 7 innings. Taylor was even better, though, pitching 8.1 scoreless innings to give Portsmouth a 2-0 win.

April 20 – Portsmouth @ Newport
Pinch-hitter Clayton Lilly was the unlikely hero, hitting a walk-off 2-run homer to give Newport a 5-4 win.

April 28 – Liberty @ Irondale
Down 4-3, Irondale scratched across a run in the 9th to send the game to extra innings. In the 10th, Spencer Warren of the Steelers hit a walk-off solo homer to give Irondale the win.

April 29 – Liberty @ Irondale
For the second straight day, Irondale snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Down 6-0 early, they scored 2 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th. Then, in the 9th, they scored 2 more to tie the game before Bob Hutchison hit a walk-off grand slam for a 10-6 win.

April 30 – Irondale @ Portsmouth
The tables were turned on Irondale, as they entered the 9th with a 4-0 lead, only to lose 5-4. Portsmouth’s Steven Carney got things close with a 3-run homer, followed by the game-winning rally.

Monthly Wrap-Up
The Newport Navigators dominated the month of May, going 20-9 and improving their record to 37-20. They now have a commanding 6-game lead over the second place Patriots. Portsmouth is in 3rd at 7 games back. The key to Newport’s success has been the continued dominance of pitchers Davis and McKinney, along with closer Will McBride. They dominate the top of the pitching leaderboards. The bottom of the rotation and the offense are doing just enough to complement them. Newport’s offense has put up the most HR in the league, but they are 4th in runs scored.

Park City and Portsmouth both have obvious weaknesses, and it’s hard to imagine either of them catching Newport at this point, but there is a lot of baseball to be played. It’s still possible that Irondale or Capital City could get hot and make a run as well.

Get to know…Ken Bradley

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982, 1983

34-year-old Ken Bradley was born in Prairie Vista, WA, a town of about 11,000 people located 70 miles southeast of Marion. He attended Oak Hill College and started his amateur career in nearby Park City in 1972. In the amateur leagues, he led the country in hits twice and batting average once.

Bradley has spent his entire CBL career with the Park City Patriots. He is a 2-time Player of the Week, and he won his first Batter of the Month last month. He has been a solid player, with a career line of .276/.338/.460. He has 57 career HR and 202 RBI, good for 10th and 9th on the career leaderboards.

Ken is a good all-around hitter, a good baserunner, and an above average fielder. He is also a positive clubhouse influence. He is having a career year, with a line of .328/.379/.544. He is currently 2nd in AVG and OPS, and he is 6th in HR and RBI. Most importantly, he is the key player on an overachieving Patriots team that is in 2nd place.

Games of the Month
May 5 – Irondale @ Park City
Park City entered the 9th down 4-3, but rallied to win with 2 runs. The winning run was scored on a bases loaded walk.

May 6 – Liberty @ Park City
Following a 3-run 8th inning by Liberty to tie the game, Park City’s Ken Bradley hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the 10th to give the Patriots a 7-5 win.

May 7 – Liberty @ Park City
It was the second straight close game between these two rivals. Park City scratched across a run in the 9th to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Liberty scored in the 11th, but Park City answered with one of their own. In the 12th, the Patriots finally ended things with a walk-off solo homer by rookie Alberto Zambrano.

May 12 – Park City @ Portsmouth
The game went into extra innings, tied 1-1. Superstar closer Bo Pratt walked home the winning run in the 10th, giving the Clippers a 2-1 win.

May 23 – Park City @ Liberty
Park City scored twice in the 9th to take a 6-5 lead, but Liberty answered to tie it up. In the 11th, Dave Bartlett hit a walk-off solo homer for the Giants.

May 29 – Liberty @ Irondale
Liberty scored a run in the 10th to take a 10-9 lead, but Irondale’s Wesley Bennett hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

May 30 – Park City @ Newport
Newport’s closer Will McBride was forced to bat in the bottom of the 13th and came through with a walk-off single, giving the Navigators an 11-10 victory.

May 30 – Capital City @ Portsmouth
Portsmouth’s Steven Carney broke a 1-1 tie with a walk-off solo homer in the 9th.

Geez, we lost Holmes again!
And now Orr is hurt, too?
And we STILL need a closer.

Monthly Wrap-Up
Once again, Newport continues to be the class of the league, proving the prognosticators here at BNN wrong. They only went 13-14 in June, but no other team could make a move, and they are still 6 games ahead of second place Capital City. Park City sits at 7 games back. Newport’s co-aces, Davis and McKinney are making their case as the best pitching duo in Newland history, and the bottom of their rotation is holding their own as well. The Navigators offense is over-reliant on home runs, but they are doing enough to keep winning.

Defending champion Capital City clearly has the best chance to make a run at the Navigators due to their balanced attack. They have a solid rotation, with 4 pitchers under a 3.50 ERA. Matt Haley is having an awful year, but he is capable of rebounding down the stretch. They also have one of the top hitters in the league in Guillermo Reyes, and Mike Wiedle will be back in a week to help out. 23-year-old SP Roosevelt Jones is a superstar in the making, but has missed almost the entire season. One has to wonder if this race would be different with him in the mix.

Players of the Week
June 4 – 2B Henry Fields, LIB, 10-24, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R
June 11 – 2B Justin Cannon, POR, 10-25, 1 HR, 3 RBI
June 18 – 2B Howard Howard, CC, 13-25, 1 HR, 8 RBI
June 25 – RF Ken Bradley, PC, 14-31, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 8 R
July 1 – SS Tim MacIntosh, POR, 14-23, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 6 R

Players of the Month
Batter – 3B Guillermo Reyes, CC, .316, 9 HR, 22 RBI, 24 R
Pitcher – SP Scott Allen, CC, 4-0, 2.43 ERA, 40.2 IP, 25 K
Rookie – RF Roberto Fernandez, CC, .329, 7 HR, 22 RBI, 18 R

Top Performances
Batting – June 28 – 2B Pete Allen, PC vs. POR, 4-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 1 BB
Pitching – June 27 – SP John Anderson, NEW vs. IRO, 9.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Major Transactions
June 14 – CL Myles Brooks, CC, signed 1-year, $7.5 million extension
June 23 – C Spencer Warren, IRO, signed 3-year, $48 million extension

Draft Highlights
#1 – Portsmouth – SP Chris Austin, 18, Indian Springs West HS (Jefferson)
Austin has the potential to be a front-line starter. He projects as a great control pitcher with good movement and decent stuff, and he could have 4 serviceable pitches.

#2 – Irondale – 1B Dusty James, 18, Claymore West HS (Washington)
James should be a good all-around hitter, but he is a below-average defender and runner. He really doesn’t appear to be a ‘can’t-miss’ prospect, but he could improve.

#3 – Park City – SP Elwood Cole, 20, Adams State
Cole has the potential to grow into a middle of the rotation starter, but he will more likely be a long reliever or emergency starter.

#4 – Liberty – CF Artie Frean, 21, Hamilton
Frean was Liberty’s 3rd-round pick last year, but failed to sign. They drafted him again this year. He is a very good defender and baserunner, but he projects as nothing more than an average hitter.

#5 – Newport – RF Gregg Kelly, 18, Erica Valley HS (Jefferson)
Kelly is an above average prospect. He should be a slightly above average hitter, but he’s not a very good defender.

#6 – Capital City – RF Ralph Torres, 18, Matthew Gap HS (Lincoln)
Torres is one of the better prospects in this class. He has good power and speed, but he is a poor defender and not much discipline at the plate.

Major Injuries
June 5 – SP Tim Bowen, LIB, out for 3 months due to forearm strain

Get to know…Bo Pratt

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982, 1983

Bo Pratt, 35, is one of the top closers in the CBL. He was born in Flint Rapids, WA, a town of about 73,000 people on the western outskirts of Glenwood. He attended college at the University of Lincoln before starting his amateur career in 1969. In the amateur leagues, he was a solid starter, going 93-60 over his first 10 seasons. He led the league in ERA in 1975. As his stamina decreased, he was moved to closer for the 1980 season, where he went 0-7 with a career-high 4.27 ERA, but he managed to rack up 31 saves to lead the league. His amateur career ERA was 2.96, good for 10th all-time.

In the CBL, Pratt started his career with the Newport Navigators, where he won back-to-back championships in 1981 and 1982. He was in the rotation for the entire first year, and he finished 2nd in voting for the Outstanding Pitcher Award. He was moved back and forth between the rotation and bullpen over the next 2 years, but he managed to finish 3rd in voting for the OPA in 1982. Overall he was very successful in Newport, going 27-15 with 26 saves in 3 years. He led the league in strikeouts in 1981, and he led the league in ERA in both 1981 and 1982. After the Navigators’ collapse in 1983, he expressed displeasure at the way he was handled in Newport, and he left town. Park City signed him to a record $24 million per year deal for 3 years, and so far he is living up to it, going 3-1 with 20 saves and a 1.82 ERA.

Pratt is currently the CBL’s career leader in ERA at 2.49. He is also the career leader in WHIP, Opponents AVG, OBP, SLG, and OPS.

Pratt has elite-level stuff and movement, and his control is about average. He has 3 excellent pitches (fastball, slider, and changeup) and an above average forkball. He is also a good defender and a clubhouse leader. In addition to his 2 OPA top-3 finishes, he has 2 Pitcher of the Month Awards and a Gold Glove (1981).

Games of the Month
June 1 – Newport @ Liberty
It was 4-4 heading to the 9th, and Liberty’s Dave Bartlett roped a 2-out, walk-off single off of superstar closer Will McBride to give Liberty a 5-4 win. It was McBride’s first loss of the year.

June 6 – Portsmouth @ Liberty
Pinch-hitter Mike Pryor hit a walk-off grand slam in the 9th to give the Giants a 4-0 victory.

June 7 – Irondale @ Park City
Irondale broke a 3-3 tie by scoring 3 runs in the 9th, but Park City came up with an answer. Gregory Metoyer hit a 3-run homer to tie it, and Jon Carlson added a 2-run homer to win it for the Patriots.

June 7 – Capital City @ Newport
Edward Davis had a stellar outing for Newport, giving up 1 run in 8 innings, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately for Newport, Will McBride was touched up again, giving up 3 runs in the top of the 9th to give the Senators a 4-3 win.

June 8 – Newport @ Portsmouth
Newport’s Will McBride continued to struggle, giving up a walk-off double to Justin Cannon to earn his 3rd loss in 8 days as Portsmouth won 3-2.

June 8 – Liberty @ Park City
The Patriots’ Jose Guzman hit a 3-run walk-off homer in the 9th to give them a 3-1 victory.

June 18 – Capital City @ Park City
Capital City entered the 9th with a 9-5 lead, but the Patriots rallied to score 5 runs in the inning to take the win. Ken Bradley scored on a wild pitch to end the game. Myles Brooks, one of the top closers in the game, couldn’t get an out in 3 BF, and he was credited with a BS and the loss.

June 22 – Liberty @ Portsmouth
Liberty led 4-2 after 6 innings, but it got crazy from there. Each team scored 5 runs in the 7th, followed by 2 more in the 8th by Liberty. Portsmouth tied it up with 4 runs in the 8th, including a 3-run homer by Steven Carney, but Dave Bartlett answered with a 2-run bomb in the 9th to give Liberty a 13-11 win.

June 29 – Capital City @ Liberty
In the longest game in league history, Capital City outlasted Liberty by scoring 3 runs in the 24th inning for a 4-1 win.

Editor's Note

I had a request for a quickstart of the CBL. I tried doing one from an existing saved game, but with all of the pictures and history, it was way too big. So, I started a new barebones game and saved it as a quickstart. It has all of the logos, uniforms, and stadiums, and all of the settings should be exactly as I play it. Even the fan interest and market size should be correct. The only difference will be the players. They were randomly generated separate from the league I'm playing, and the quickstart opens with an inaugural draft. You will need to turn pictures on in the league setup, as keeping them off kept the file size down.

You can download it here or from the website in my signature. Please let me know if there's anything I need to fix.

In some ways, I like the idea of keeping the players I've been writing about to myself, but if someone has a good idea for making a quickstart work with them (that doesn't take TOO much time to do), I'd be open to it. Thanks!

Monthly Wrap-Up
Once again, Newport had a below-average month, going 14-15. Their co-ace, Edward Davis, really struggled in July, going 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 6 starts. William McKinney, however, did his part, going 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA.

Our prediction of Capital City having a chance to catch them proved false, as they played even worse than Newport and are now 7 GB with 7 to play. The Park City Patriots, however, went 18-11 to make up 4 games on the Navigators. They are 3 GB, and 3 of their final 7 games are against Newport, so things could get interesting. The Patriots’ key to their success has been their balance, as Ken Bradley, Earl Gordon, and Bo Pratt are the only players that can be considered stars.

Get to know…Tim MacIntosh

Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982, 1983

For the first time, we are profiling a player that started his career in the CBL, having never played in the amateur leagues. At 24 years old, Portsmouth’s SS Tim ‘Cooter’ MacIntosh is a superstar in the making. Born in Indian, WA, a town of almost 100,000 people about 150 miles northeast of Glenwood, he went to college at Humphreyfield, between Centerville and Arlington. He was drafted #2 overall in the 1981 draft, and he started with the CBL club right away. He really came into his own in 1982, leading the league in triples and finishing 2nd in hits. He went on to lead the league in hits and doubles in 1983. He finished 2nd and 3rd in stolen bases these two years as well. This year, he has really broken through, leading the league in AVG, WAR, H, 3B, TB, and SB, with 7 games to play. He has already broken the CBL record for hits in a season. He has 169, and the second best in the league has 115.

MacIntosh is an extremely good contact hitter that avoids strikeouts but rarely walks. He has very little power, as demonstrated by his 6 career HR. He is also an elite-level defender at both SS and 2B, and there is nobody in the game faster or better at stealing bases. He has a legitimate chance to be known as the best leadoff hitter in Newland’s history, and the only thing really holding him back is his eye.

MacIntosh is intelligent, gets along with everyone, and has an exceptional work ethic that will keep him at the top of the game for years to come. He currently owns 2 Player of the Week awards and the 1983 Gold Glove at SS, but we expect him to add to his trophy case significantly over the next few years.

Games of the Month
July 9 – Capital City @ Newport
Newport’s Kyle Bailey hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game, but Capital City answered with a run in the 9th to win it 5-4.

July 10 – Newport @ Portsmouth
Portsmouth jumped out to a 7-1 lead after 2 innings, but Newport clawed their way back in it, and won 10-8 with a great comeback.

July 12 – Newport @ Portsmouth
Newport entered the 9th down 6-2, but rallied to score 4 runs. The Navigators had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and a chance to take the lead, but failed to score again. Portsmouth scored in the bottom of the inning on a Will McBride wild pitch to win the game.

July 18 – Newport @ Park City
Closer Will McBride’s struggles continued, as he gave up the winning run in the 10th inning to Park City. He is now 3-7 on the year.

July 23 – Newport @ Capital City
Capital City’s number 5 starter Chance Webb shut down the first place Navigators, as the Senators won 2-0.

July 25 – Liberty @ Portsmouth
Liberty scored 6 runs in the 1st, and held an 11-4 lead going in to the 7th. Portsmouth scored a run in the 7th and added 7 more in the 8th, including a Steven Carney grand slam, to win 12-11.
