I'd love to see this just randomly appear in a game...
"Player union demands free agency eligibility reduced to 6 years instead of 7. Owners have choice to give in and cost them more money or refuse and risk a work stoppage." Then days later... "Owners refuse to budge, free agency remains at 7 years." Then a few days later "Players go on strike." Then about four months later, after you sim 4 months since nothing can happen in the game, you see this. "Player and owners comprise, FA eligibility remains at 7 years but rosters now expand to 26 players. League will resume as of today but will play a condensed 120 game season." |

Offseason Stories?
Offseason stories? For example: Alex Rodriguez is being a mentor to young rising star Eric Hosmer. They're rumored to be working out together in Miami during the offseason.
Maybe it effects nothing? Maybe Hosmer gets a lot stronger in the offseason. ( more power?) Maybe you see a huge spike and suspect PEDs? ha Maybe storylines like "Alex Rodriguez is looking to unload his 20,000 square foot in Miami." to invest in NY real estate. This isn't so much a storyline, but having more info during the amateur draft regarding players possibly pursuing football, etc is a good idea. Usually several guys in the later rounds decide to go to college to play baseball or another sport. So you'd likely be signing 30-35 players instead of 40. |

I like the offseason idea about players working out together. Here's a variation on that I was thinking about:
Jason Heyward(current player) works out under the watchful eye of Hank Aaron(Hall of Famer). He show signs of improvement in patience(an increase in some attribute) results could be nothing or improves rating. Also if its a pitcher perhaps he gains a new pitch. Ways to get a pitcher a new pitch is very desirable to me. |

Any chance one of the storylines could be about a talented reliever trying to add a third pitch? If he is successful you obviously have a potential SP on your hands. Maybe a negative could be that he neglects his other pitches so he has the change to lose some potential in them? Maybe this option delays his dev up to the bigs? Would this aspect be too hard to code?
I think it could be a fun addition with the amount of two pitch high stamina guys we still see in our drafts. |

Along the same lines of players working out together during the offseason, I think it would be cool to see former players or HOF's sign onto a team as a special advisor during spring training (e.g., Sandy Koufax and the Mets/Dodgers), which could possibly result in a boost of a certain area of ratings.

Player complains about tax rates, popularity plummets.
Player rants on Twitter about team mates, forces trade. |

This is not possible within the storyline editor.

Can we have a player injuried while shoveling snow? Maybe a ruptured spleen or something.

Offseason/Spring Training stories and Clubhouse drama
I've already mentioned possible offseason stories involving a current player and possibly a former player working out together... leading to possible progress in attributes. (hitting skills, pitching skills or a new pitch)
Clubhouse drama.. Deciding whether to suspend or bench players for a clubhouse skirmish? Or maybe a player throws a punch at the manager and you must release him or trade him before you lose the morale of a lot of the core players on the team. I'm not a big believer in "clubhouse chemistry" but incorporating team morale to matter a little would be a fun optional feature. If a team is on a losing skid. .Maybe it's a little more difficult for players with significant morale drops to slump a little bit longer. (Maybe just 1 or 2 games as I wouldn't want this to overwhelm the game) |

Manager storylines/Local media
I doubt the developers would touch this, but Ron Washington getting outed for being a cokehead leads to a big decision. Do we defend him? Or fire him for the slight chances of humiliation leading to lowering team morale.
You lose a few games in a week by blowing big leads. Maybe you aren't utilizing the bullpen the right way. Storylines about the local media ripping the manager for his in game decision making? Maybe they interview the manager about some of their gripes? Two selections: A: of whether to stand by your decision to not go to your closer with a 5 run lead. Or B: Throw your middle relief guys under the buss because they've been underacheiving all year: In result of that some players may react differently to the choice you make? |
