Gotta say after looking at the stats of both during their "prime" they are extremely similar. Except one pitched and dominated during the steroid era

I generally lean towards 80's players but Greg Maddux was the best ever. His ERA's looked like they were from the 1960's, except he was doing it during the very heart of the steroid era. He threw a complete game shutout once on 59 pitches. I can't think of anyone else quite like him.

I'm not a Braves fan but that 1990's Braves rotation was the best of all time IMO.

Maddux was great for a long period of time, but he was nowhere near as good as Pedro's peak. No pitcher ever had a more dominant season as Pedro in 1999.

Offense was pretty ridiculous that year. Also, strikeouts were a lot less frequent that year than they are now.

He retired three years before I started watching baseball. I've read that guy's arm was just toast his last couple of years yet he was still getting 'em out.

I'd still probably opt for 1968 Bob Gibson.

He completed 28 of 34 starts with 13 shutouts. He pitched 304 innings that year with a 1.12 era.

Or Koufax '63, 1.88 ERA, 11 shutouts, 20 CG, 311 innings, 306 strikeouts (not even close to his career best 382 strikeouts)

Gibson and Drysdale were two menacing presences on the mound. They were mean when they climbed up on that hill that was 5 inches higher than today. They would stare down at the hitter with that glare and dare look in their eyes.

The pitchers in the 60s and 70s were pitching in ridiculously low scoring eras. The worst qualified starting pitchers in the leagues still had ERAs under 4. I don't know how you can even compare them to Pedro Martinez in 1999, when the best pitchers in the league had close to a 4 ERA, while Pedro still was about 2 runs better than every single other pitcher. Also, Tom Seaver was better than Vida Blue in 1971, along with every other year.

But could those other guys, even in their 50's, still punk an all-star like this?
