Well, I know you ain't Willie Mays (your SayHey1 handle) coz he's from Alabama.

I actually gigged there once (I'm a pianist). It was a child talent act, the Keane Bros. We opened for Red Skelton, which was awesome. He came backstage & we had a chance to meet him. . he was exactly like you'd expect him to be. Totally kindhearted dude.
This was in 1978, so Billings was still a fairly small town. The venue was in like the main town hall, Memorial Hall or something. And there was another building which they'd turned into a makeshift casino, with like bingo & stuff. Altogether an awesome & unique experience as I recall it.


Speaking of Mays, I once met John Roseboro, in an equally unique set of circumstances. Of course, I was a Dodger fan, having grown up in LA during the '60s. So when I was doing a session in like 1988 with this singer who used to work as a BG vocalist for Motown, he said "C'mon. I'm gonna take you somewhere." We drove down into South Central neighborhood.. not exactly a welcome place for a stone whitey like me, at the time. LoL. But he wouldn't tell me where we were going. Stopped at this modest little house down there, and the next thing I knew, we were knocking on John Roseboro's door. I was awestruck, to put it lightly. He answered the door himself! Then we went in & it was just like, I dunno, like a normal dude, you know. After we chatted a bit, we went into the den and there was a keyboard set up. Me & my singer friend played a tune.. LoL .. but I was still just staring at John, you know. Weirdest damn thing. We finished the tune, and John said "Sounds nice.".. and that was that. We chatted a little more & then left. I was stunned like for weeks after. LoL

Yep...he was incredible as a Little Leaguer...plus he was a year older than me. He blanked our LL team and I think his team won State LL title that year. Later, we went to the same High School and I didn't hang with him but pretty much everyone knows everyone. They also won State AA basketball title with him as a Senior (my Junior year). He also was tutored quite a bit by Dave McNally (another Billings native!)

No, he's just always been my favorite player of all time. He was slightly before my time, but I loved the fact he was a 5 tool player and his baseball card was always in high demand.

Yep...born and raised in Billings. I was living here in 1978 when you breezed through...I would imagine the place your thinking of was the Shrine Auditorium....just several blocks from my home where I grew up. Interestingly, after 25 years away (mostly in Houston), I am now back in Billings where I watch our Mustangs still battle in Rookie Ball as a Reds farm team. The town has probably just about doubled in size since 1978, but still pretty small overall. Just right for me though.

Great story! The closest I can come is when I lived in Houston, I used to run Gap (retail) stores. One night, I was closing for my team (working till 10pm) and it was a Monday night. Very slow. Suddenly, in comes Terry Collins (who had JUST been let go by the Astros). He was shopping with his wife. I told him I felt he got the shaft and wished him well going forward. He seemed very appreciative and was super friendly. I also worked in a mall that was the most popular one in Houston (for Gap) and because of that athletes of visiting teams were always in our store...the most famous baseball version I met was Tony Larussa and Ozzie Smith (his final year playing) and the rest of the Cardinals. It was always fun meeting famous folks like that.
