Teddy ****ing Ballgame

Despite his club's failure to make the World Series and miss the chance to defend their crown, Williams finished with a year for the ages. Williams finishes at .410, finishing over .400 for the second time in his career after his .406 mark in 1941.

Williams also led the league in RBI with 138 and finished just one off of the HR lead with 33, narrowly missing the triple crown. A mighty season regardless.

Final sabermetric line:

.410/.543/.707 1.249 OPS

215.4 Runs Created 18 RC/27

Edit: You heard it here second.
4-2 in the last week - but just not enough. Would have been nice to have had Ferriss in one of those games - but it wasn't to be.

It's going to be a heck of a Series - I somehow doubt we'll see the 19-12 games that were featured in the '48 series. Cards are solid - but the Yanks have the best pitching staff I've seen since the '46 Cards...

Yanks in 7

Now that the regular season is over, we all need to start pestering Andy on a daily basis to get the Cato History 5.3 report run on the PWBL history.

Williams had an amazing season in '46 and ended up with 42 WinShares, IIRC.

This year's performance is far superior and the results from the Cato report will be fascinating(pester, pester).

Well - Roger was right - the 9-7 loss to the Senators? Dobernic blew the save - the Sox went into that ninth up 7-6....

Burkhart and Culberson also got hurt in the last sim - if the Sox had pulled it out, they would have been limping into the Series.

The Red Sox entered the next to the last game of the season level with the Yankees. Entering the top of the 9th, the lead and the ball were handed to closer Jess Dobernic and the resulting catastrophe ensued.

Score: Boston (A) 7, Washington 6

Batting: Washington, top of 9th.

Pitching: Walker Cress
New pitcher: Jess Dobernic.
P Ed Hanyzewski:
New 2B: Bobby Doerr.
PH Nick Etten:
Base on balls.
1B Eddie Waitkus:
SINGLES to right
S. Robertson to second.
Robertson tries to advance to third...
He reaches third base safely without a throw.
3B Ferris Fain:
Grounds out to the shortstop.
G. Myatt to second.
CF Stan Spence:
Intentional walk.
LF Monte Irvin:
Base on balls.
S. Robertson scores.
G. Myatt to third.
S. Spence to second.
RF Buddy Lewis:
SINGLES down the left field line.
G. Myatt scores.
S. Spence to third.
M. Irvin to second.
Spence tries to score...
He scores without a throw.
New pitcher: Charles Wensloff.
SS Bill Rigney:
PH Tom Wright:
Flies out to deep center field.
Irvin tags up at second...
Dimaggio throws to third...
SAFE at third base.
2B Jerry Coleman:
Lines out to the third baseman.
Inning over... 3 runs, 2 hits, no errors.
Score: Washington 9, Boston (A) 7

A host of horrors in this inning, the bases loaded walk to Irvin being the most criminal. Dobernic drove the final nail in the coffin for the defending World Champions, the second straight year he has helped sink an AL contender.

I could be a jackass and mention that Bill Zuber won his final two starts of the year to finish 18-4, but I won't go there.

Hee-haw!

Now for the NL Rookie of the Year debate....Both players had solid seasons, of course I am a little bias, but breaking down the numbers....Roy Sievers should be the NL ROY!!! But Luke Easter has a strong chance, and will probably get the nod!!

G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB K .AVG OBP
EASTER 147 555 151 25 1 32 137 79 53 75 .272 .330
SIEVERS 149 522 152 23 6 26 92 92 92 49 .291 .397

Tough call for the sportswriters!!

After a strong first half the Braves petered out in the 2nd half and anxiously await the #7 selection in the upcoming amatuer draft.

He may be ensnared in that baseball backwater known as Cleveland but Dino "Dingo" Restelli will most likely win the AL Rookie of the Year Award going away.

The 2nd round draft selection was slowed early by broken ribs and didn't catch fire until the last two months of the season. When the flame was ignited, oh, did it burn so brightly.

When the regular season concluded, Restelli finished with a .274 BA, .377 OBP, .563 SLG, 34HR and 102 RBI. His HR total tied for the major league lead with Hank Sauer. On top of that, add in his gold glove caliber defense in centerfield.

The Yanks owner is in his owner seats awaiting the playing of the first 2 games... Rumors have it that he even has to be at the office very early in the morning, but refused to miss the games.
