WBL Commissioner's Backlash

WBL World Cup Showing and the Commissioner's Backlash

(AP) - The WBL World Cup team is finding the World Cup more than they bargained for. In-fighting between the team about playing time and mounting losses have made the WBL team a laughing stock. Jonathan Santillan, arguably the best player in the WBL, recently complained heavily about being benched for a recent game. Michael Deputy has asked off the team because Archie Robertson had been getting the starting nod. Wayne Fyfe is also upset about playing time. Christian Wilson has constantly demanded a larger locker for his 5 foot 100 lb statue of Buddha. And Hobert Hale asked to be benched because his wife said he can't play because he didn't fix the roof before he left for Chicago. Meanwhile, the WBL team is 2-5 and will not make it to the next round.

The commissioner has taken a lot of heat for the performance and scheduled a press conference, in what was expected to be an attempt to diffuse the situation. Instead, the commissioner used the opportunity to strike back at those who accuse him. Selected quotes from the press conference follow:

"I'd like to say to Jonathan Santillan, after all that talk, the next day you get the start and you go zero for three. Zero! Nada! I'd rather see an Oscar Ramos who is hitting .207 over your ungrateful .250!"

"Deputy? He made the team? Oh well, you don't play, you don't get paid."

"Christian Wilson needs to learn that desire leads to unhappiness. And he also needs to learn that a .200 average leads to banishment from the WBL for life. And no job means less holistic healing crystals at home."

"I hope Fyfe remembers what it was like to be in a coma last season. Understand?"

"Hobert, you didn't fix the roof, but your wife fixed you. Raul Manzano's wife fixes the roof for him!"

The commissioner left without answering questions after his tirade. A spokesperson for the league admitted that the commissioner has been taking heavy doses of valium since the World Cup began so poorly for the WBL team.

Well the FLB seems to be in a dog fight and the NLB is playing pretty well despite their pitching.

So far so good.

Down to Earth

After two straight wins, the WVL take their first defeat of this week, losing to the NLB. It was not the anticipated hitting contest many had expected. But instead, the NLB came out 5-3 winners.

Albert Diaz (0-2 5.82) had another trouble outing for his standards. Striking out 10, Diaz still couldn't stop the surge in the 2nd inning, where the NLB scored 4 runs. With 2 outs, 1B Brian Becker drove in two runs with a double before Scott Jazdzewski sent one over the wall for 2 more runs.

Both sides scored in the 5th to make the score 5-1 until the 9th. With 0 outs Julio Mariscal hit his 3rd HR, a 2 run shot, to make it an exciting finish. However it was not to be for the WVL as closer Bill Williams got his 4th save, striking out 1 and forcing the others into groundball plays.

The WVL bats will be dissapointed not to take advantage of the poor pitching shown by the NLB so far in this tournament but they will agree that the better side won on the day.

Tonight the WVL have another tough game on their hands as they go up against the TPL. The TPL are another side who's pitching isn't the strongest but they can still work out the wins as they come into the match 4-3. The WVL will take heart in that division rivals, MaxLB, beat them yesterday 12-1.

POTD Finally on Track

After a horrible 0-3 start the POTD All Stars have begun to right the ship by going 3-1 in their last 4. This run has included 2 wins against the USBA, one of the favorites in the tournament.

Tonight the POTD squares off against the NML of group 4. NML currently holds the same record as POTD. With only 4 games remaining both teams are in a must win situation.

POTD will send SP John Meader (Hudson Hawks) to the mound. Meader is one of the POTD's brightest young stars but has yet to pitch in the World Cup. Meader has good command of the strikezone and can work deep into games.

The POTD offense has finally started to heat up after struggling through the first few games however some changes to the lineup have been planned.

Up and coming OF Jonathan "Evil Ways" Luciani (Mexico City Diablos) has been inserted into the lineup to help provide some offensive support to POTD star 1B Timothy Siffuentes (Michigan Erie) who has been one of the few offensive leaders thus far.

With a fresh arm on the mound and a re-tooled lineup the POTD expects a strong showing against the NML.

Breaking News!! July 10 2003

BREAKING NEWS FLASH!!

XBL has scratched off Stoney, who was suppose to start today against the FLB allstars, instead Legendary pitcher, Aaron Heilman will take the ball today. XBL's manager, Potatoman decided the swith just a couple of hours before the game's scheduled time that takes place in Wrigley later today. This is certainly going to give more chances for the XBL to win this must-win game.

Heilman is a career 160 game winner with a 1.85 career ERA, he pitched once already in this tournament. He was great allowing only 3 runs and struck out 15!! in just over 8 innings of work. If the XBL batting can come throug today, they shoudl have no problem of winnings.

Infractions: 0/1 (1)
Heilman lets up 1 run, K-ing 8 to extend XBL's win streak to 3...

Heilman wins a must win game....

Heilman certainly lived up to his name today as XBL beat FLB allstars in a MUST WIN GAME...actually all games now are basically must win.

" When i came into this league, i thought, ehh we'll win it easily. My teammates and I were so confident that it would be easy but after we lost our first game, we realized it wasn't that easy. We realized we had to work hard and we got a little over cocky again when we won 2 in a row, and then lost but now we are not taking anything for granted. Our management has proved to be very good and we are playing hard every game. We had to settle disputes in the clubhouse and maybe people are still disgruntled. Juan Richardson has been the most angry with the management and i don't blame him. He hasn't been able to get in a game yet and he isn't used to that. He was an allstar player in the XBL and is not used to being benched. Pujols and Fumihiro have been in a few arguments with the manager over playing time. They both think they deserve to play. Closser and Huber both had to share a lot of time too and they have learned to get along a little bit better. We all now realize that this is a team effort and in the last 3 games, management has been playign all the right moves and that we should just trust our staff until they are wrong." said Heilman...

"Aaron is a legend in XBL. He is untouchable there but now he's hittable but what can i say, hes only human, not a machine. I'd also like to give credit to the management, starting with starting Bevis to starting heilman today. Also K-Rod notched 3 saves in the last 3 days and hasn't shown any flaw. He's been almost lights out. I think we are starting to come together and we all want to win. I think the person suffering most is Yeatman. He says he can still pitch but he is injured and management does not want him to pitch. He wants to be part of it but he knows he can't pitch at 50% and blow a game for us cuz a game could mean elimination for us." said Jose Reyes, who was also one of the players who could lead a team to victory on any given day but hasn't been able to in the World Cup.

XBL faces theirr biggest challenge on the last 2 days playing C2C and USBL........ more to come later

WVL Fall Again

The WVL lose their second straight game after an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the TPL. This leaves the WVL in a battle to make it into the playoffs. Their current record is 4-4 and if they lose their next game to the NBA then their World Cup will most likely be all over.

In last night's game Del Griffin gave up 12 hits and 8 runs, walking 4 and getting 5 K's. We asked him after the game what happened. "Well I just wasn't hitting my zone very well today and I lost us the game, it's that simple"

It could very well have been a closer scoreline if the WVL took advantage of their hits - the TPL only outhit them 12-10. The middle order struggled and the only player to really come out of the game shining was catcher Donnie Evatt as he went 4 for 4 with 2 runs.

----------------------

Tomorrow could see the end of the World Cup for the WVL. If they lose to the NBA then a wildcard place would be out of reach as they would be 1.5 GB with one to play. The division will still be up for grabs however if MaxLB lose, and if the WVL can get a win tomorrow then it will all go right down to the wire in their final game against the USBA.

Tomorrow we will look at how the divisions are being won and what will happen on the last day of league play.

Day 11-Playoff Push!

........................................... @ .................................................. .............

OK, Potatoman, here's your game of the day. jk. Seriously, this is probably gonna be the best match up of the day. Despite winnning the past three straight games, XBL is still triling the red hot NBL team who has won 4 straight. Cbl on the other hand has not been playing good at all. Losing two straight and is now falling to last place in the group. However, they still got a shot for post season if they can win every game untill the end of the round robins.

XBL started as an underdog in the tournament, I personally did not expect anything from this ball club other than Aaron Heilman there's really no one else on the team that really surprises me. However as the tournamnet progresses, the XBL has become one of the most fearsom teram to play against. With great pitching from almost everybody and consisten base hits from everyone in the lineups, the XBL will look to be strong as usual tomorrow against the CBL. James Stone will take the mound tomorrow, he has struggled so far in the tournament, pitching at a 10.80 ERA, however he did K 9 times in his first appearance. Look for him to be hooked very early if he starts to lose his cool.

CBL on the other end is probably more desperate to win this next game than anyone else in the world. With this being the last game of their world cup round robins, they will have to win and still hope other teams will lose all of theirs. It is highly unlikely to see any more of CBL in the playoffs, but if there’s a will there’s a way. Morgan Harrison is going to match up against Stone. Harrison has pitched twice already in this tourney with a 8.56 ERA and a 1-1 record. His stat isn’t great but still looks to be beter than Stone on paper. The CBL lineup will also feature 3 of the greatest players in the game, Boney, Gaylor and Bayne. If this team were to lose they will go out strong.

Look for the XBL to play their hearts out as they will need this win badly in order to tie NBL for the group lead. However CBL will also play their best as this will be their last round robin game of the July Madness Tournament. I’ll take XBL by 1.

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Prediction stats: 4-6.
*all files and reports are up except for highlights, they will be up later tonite.
*NBL won again, now with the best winning percentage in the tournament.
*With one game left to play, C2C has already clinched a playoff spot and has still yet to make one single error.
*No one is eliminated from th playoff runs yet, however some are getting pretty close.
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Other Notables for Day 11:
-NBA will play their last round robin game against WVL. This game will be a HUGE factor in determining the wildcard spot.
-MaxLB takes on a very disappointing USBA team as they are very likely to be packing up in a couple of days.
-JBL takes on IPB, both team with a 2-6 record, both are likely to go home as their playoff run approaches to an end.
-BPLA looks for one more chance to make XBL work for their wild card, as BPLA plays a struggling yet leading FLB team.
-NML vs TPL. NML will look to comeback from a bad start and try for that wild card spot as they face off against the group leading TPL team.
-WBL looks to finish strong and go out ith glory as they try to upset one of the most offensive power house, the NLB allstars

Ok no more pub for POTD since it seems to give them performance anxiety. Damn NML!

World Cup Over for WVL

The WVLs World Cup campaign is over after losing 4-2 to the NBA last night. This result, coupled with MaxLBs victory over the USBA, means that the WVL fell out of both the wildcard race and the chance to go for the division title.

Gerald Leavy (2-1 2.66) took to the mound for the 3rd time in this competition but had a woeful time on the hill. He gave up 8 walks while only striking out 4 in 130 pitches through 6.2 innings. The bats of the WVL made little noise, grabbing no extra base hits and after taking the lead in the top of the 5th thanks to Carlos Reyes' 2 run single, the team continued to struggle.

Tomorrow they go out for one last time and will be playing for pride against the USBA.

--------------------------------

Now we look at how the divisions have been won an what is still left to play this weekend.

Pool A
Group 1 - C2C, BPLA, CBL

The C2C's strong pitching performances have taken them into full control of the divison at 7-2. Closer Claudio Sanabria has 5 saves to his credit to fully complement their rotation. The offense is still not hitting for average but are demons for drawing walks and getting the job done. Tomorrow they face the XBL which could go play a big part in how Group 3 shapes up.

The BPLA and CBL have something to build on for next time around but will not have any impact on the rest of the competition this time around.

Pool A
Group 2 - FLB, IPBball, CDML

This division could be all over tonight when the FLB take on the NLB. If the FLB win then they will take the division and get ready for the playoffs. If they lose however, this division will go right down to the wire. IPBball will then need to win and look for the FLB to lose to take both teams to 4-6. The FLB have two very tough games this weekend too, NLB and the NBL while IPBball take on division strugglers CDML tomorrow.

Pool A
Group 3 - NBL, XBL, JBL

A very close finish awaits in Group 3. Only 1 game seperates the NBL and XBL going into this weekend for the final two games. It is too close to call right now but the team that does not take the division will win the wildcard race.

Pool B
Group 1 - NLB, NBA, NML

AFter beating the WVL yesterday, the NBA have now played their 10 games and have to wait to see if they go into the playoffs as division winners or through the wildcard. The NLB will finish top of the division if they beat either the FLB or the TPL this weekend. The NML are not far behind but failed to beat their division rivals and struggled for consistancy.

Pool B
Group 2 - MaxLB, WVL, WBL

The WVL have lost 3 straight to let MaxLB take full control of the division. The WVL and WBL play for pride in their matches tomorrow that have no bearing on the rest of the competition.

Pool B
Group 3 - TPL, POTD, USBA

The TPL have taking this division through sheer determination and never giving up. The POTD looked to have the division lost after being swept in the 3 games against the TPL to start their World Cup. They have picked up since but it is too late to salvage a playof spot. The USBA will be battling it out to avoid being the basement team of the tournament - the other teams fighting to avoid that award will be the CDML and the JBL.

With most of the playoff spots filled, anticipation is building for the post season. We will take a look at a rundown of all the matchups and how the final few places were won in a few days time.

But for the WVL, they will be packing their bags and heading home after tomorrows game looking to finish at .500. We will have a match review and some post-world cup interviews tomorrow

Day 12- All-LedgeSko Day

........................................... @ .................................................. .............

With only two days left in the tournament, many teams are either happy wiht a clinched playoff spot or packing up to go home. Today's match up of the day will feature 2 possible playoff teams FLB vs NLB. FLB is only 4-4, yet still leading the goup by 1.5 games. NLB on the other hand dominates their opponents. they are 6-2 right now with the second most runs scored in the tournament. This match up is also significant as both online leagues are run by the same commish. And from what i am told, both leagues have yet to play each other. This will be the first time the two leagues face each other and maybe a preview of the World Cup Finals.

FLB is a team with bad stats period. Team stats, individual stats even their record is not so great. But they happen to be in a division where every other teams are struggling. Still this is the only division left with an undecided champ. Coming into the tournament i did not see this team go very far either, but they have proved me wrong. However playing against a team like NLB they will need very good pitchign to stay close. Cutter "Spider" Fleming is going to start tomorrow. He is the best starter with the lowest ERA on tehs taff right now with 3.12. He pitched only one game so far allowing 3 runs in 8.2 innings with 10 K's. In my opinoion he's not qualified enough to keep the NLB bats quiet.

NLB is one of the hottest team in the tournament. They have earned every single bit of respect from the powerful bat we've been seeing. They dont have a lot of pitching, but their bats are good enough to win them most of the games. With several notable players on the lineups, NLB is definitely one of the favorites to win the cup. Bobby Madrisch is goign to face off against Fleming. Madrisch has a 6.08 ERA with a 1-0 record in 2 games pitched in the tournament. His stats isn't so attractive, but he is one of the best starter on the staff. Especially with the FLB lineups due up, Madrisch will look to pitch just well enough to keep the runs down.

This All-LedgeSko match up will be a great game to watch for, since both team will probably go on to the playoffs and i'm both online leagues' owners will be very anxious to whom will go further. I'll have to go with the favorites, NLB by 5.

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Prediction stats: 5-6.
*all files and reports are up.
*XBL clinches at least the wild card spot.
*C2C, TPL and MaxLB all clinched group title.
*NLB and NBA will have to fight out who's gonna take the group but both will be in the playoffs.
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Other Notables for Day 11:
-NBL looks to go 8-1 to take over the best record in tournament against POTD.
-Struggling USBA will play against XBL as XBL tries to take the group lead while as USBA tries to finsih the tournamet strong.

Day13 Last Day of the Round Robins...

........................................... @ .................................................. .............

Time sure flies, it's already the thirteenth and the last day of the round robins, which 18 teams will be cut down to only 8. It's sad that some team have to go, but there's only room for one champ in the world. Great thanx for all who signed up looking forward to seeing all of you back in October when the competition gets even more intense. Most playoff spot are pretty much written in stone except for group 2. FLB didn't close the deal today losing to NLB, giving IPB a chance to climb back in for that last ticket into the playoffs. The only thing in the way now is CDML, trying to finish strong and play a little spoiler along the way.

Group 2 is probalby the weakest group in the tournament, with the leading team playing at a sub .500 record. IPB is only still in the race coz everyone else is losing too. They have played poorly so far with a record of 3-6. Tomorrow will be a good day for them to start playing good as they have their backs against the wall now. They are 1 game behind FLB so even if IPB wins, a FLB win can still make IPB go home. However FLB will be playing the best team in the tournament NBL, so basically win or lose,IPB's fate is in their own hands. Ace, Alan Kelsey will be the one answering the call. So far in 2 games that he pitched, he has a 2.65 ERA and a 1-1 record. Look for him to continue the same consistency tomorrow. But they will also need some batter to wake up. "King Kong" Danny Hill and Jason Draper have to start contributing, they have yet to register 1 RBI nor a HR. In the regular season they combined for 78 HR and 269 RBI's. It will be interesting to see how these guys react comes clutch time tomorrow.

CDML, on the other hand, is out of the playoffs. They had a solid tournament so far, just weren't lucky enough sometimes to come out of the winning end. They stay in most games despite the horrible stats the team is putting up. However look for them ot finish off the year strong and give IPB some challenge to earn an extra game for the last playoff spot. Leo Aguiar will start tomorrow to finish off the tournament for CDML. He only pitched once so far this tournament with a no decision pitching only 3.2 innings in that game. IPB will certainly look to take adventage of this dismantled pitched. DH, George Garcia has played nothign like his career statrs indicated, he isprobably one of the biggest disppointment so far in the tournament, look for him to redeem himself tho as he will have to wait at elast three months if he doesn't.

IPB will give everything to win this game, so I'll go with IPB by 2. I'm also going for this since i want to see the extra game.

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Prediction stats: 6-6.
*all files and reports are up.
*My prediction yesterday was right on the money!
*Thanx to all participants, have a great last day! And congrats to 7 lucky team that are already in the playoffs. The real madness begins NOW...
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Other Notables for Day 11:
-FLB will play the best team in the league for the last playoff spot. And Cy Mil starting for the NBL isn't helping either.
-XBL faces off against C2C, could be a playoff preview.
-NLB plays TPL, also could be a lpayoff preview between 2 very good teams.
-USBA, WVL, BPLA, JBL all tries to finish strong tomorrow in their last game of the tourney even though all will be going home after.
-MaxLB takes on Andy and the POTD allstars, "Papa Grande" Gomez against youngester, Ismael Costillo of the MaxLB.

Monday 7/14/2003: Player of the Week honors go to Cevericks and Jimenez
Jerry Cevericks from NBL wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the Pool A. Jerry pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .944. Karim Jimenez wins his 44th Player of the Week award. Pool B pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Jimenez helped his team with an average of .636 and 5 RBI in 22 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. While compiling an on base percentage of .556, Karim hit .512 and slugged .902. He has collected 10 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the Pool B in batting and 6th in RBI!

Day 14 - FBL VS IPB!! Do or Die!!

........................................... @ .................................................. .............

This is it, my prediciton came true, IPB has forced an extra final deciding show down against FLB tomorrow. Winner will get the final playoff ticket and the loser will have to go home. IPB won today with confidence playng probably their best ball so far in the tournament. They won 8-1 agaisnt the struggling CDML. And FLB lost a hear breaking 8-7 game in a 11 inning marathon, which forces an extra game to break the tie.

IPB will send Bust Alexander to the mound. He has pitched two games so far in the tournament, with a 1-1 record. He only allowed one run in the game that he won but allowed 10 runs in the game that he lost. This is an very unpredictable pitcher. And IPB's performance tomorrow will be greatly reflected inhis individual performance. The batting showed some life in the last game agaisnt the CDML, and you can bet it's gonna come up again tomorrow. Look for the same solid performance the team put up today.

FLB did not capitalize on many previous games and had fell into this situation themself. They will nedd to get back to the winner's column tomorrow if they want to get any further. Jared Howton will pitch tomorrow agaisnt the red hot IPB lineups. He pitched twice this tournament with a 1-0 record which includes a game where he allowed 6 runs in 4.2 IP and a game which he only allowed 1 run in 7.2 IP. The FLB lineups have also been struggling with no one batting over .300. They will need to break the cold streak tomorrow if they have nay chance of winning at all.

With both starting pitcher being very inconsistent so far in the tournament, look for the big bats to stand up and win the game. I'll go with IPB by 1.

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................

Prediction stats: 7-6.
*all files and reports are up.
*Playoff schedule and matchups will be released tomorrow. And most likely the first games will start on Tuesday. The real madness begins NOW...

When You're Cold You're Cold

The WVL end their World Cup with a record of 4-6, losing their last 4 games in the process. Douglas Chapple started the game and had another good outing, going 8 innings and striking out 10. But with the score 5-4, Fred Folden came in to close out the game. Folden (0-1 2 saves) gave two hits, including the game winning HR.

Mariscal hit a 3 run homer (5) in the 7th and he was the WVL' best player of the tournament, batting .350, hitting 5 HRs and 10 RBIs. The rest of the squad failed to find consistency in the past week. Even the normally calm and relaxed Migual Franco lost his head when he got thrown out of the game for arguing a strike 3 call last night.

Most of the WVL will stay on and watch the rest of the contest being played out before heading home to continue the West Virginia League and reignite old rivalries. After yesterdays game we had some post-match interviews with the players and manager.

We talked to Migual Franco and he told us what he thought of the tournament as a whole, "It has been a great competition to be a part of and we're all truly sad that it is over for us. We had a lot of confidence coming into the second week but we just couldn't keep it together. That's not to take anything away from the other teams - they beat us because they played better on the day and deserved to win."

Next we caught up with two starting pitchers and long time friends, Gerald Leavy and Albert Diaz and they were asked about if they had any private bets going on. "We always have some private wager going on," said Leavy. "And it normally involves strikeouts!"
"Man," Diaz joked. "He only won because he had that extra game the other day. Not to worry though, I have his number back home again this year."

Leavy finished with a 2-1 record, 2.66ERA and 20Ks in 23.2IP
Diaz went 0-2 with a 5.82ERA and 17Ks in 17.0IP

We then had our exclusive post World Cup interview with WVL manager, Muppetus Galacticus. We started by asking what went wrong.

"Consistency. Or lack of. Once you hit a bad patch it is hard to get out of again when you have to face these kinds of teams day in day out."

When asked about the competition as a whole, Muppetus had this to say.

"I think it is a wonderful idea and one that I hope it will go on for a long time to come. The crew here have worked tirelessly to keep the field playable and the fans happy. I haven't talked to a single player or coach that hasn't enjoyed being here and we will be back next time around for sure!"

Finally, he was asked about the WVL and what kind of players he can expect to bring next time around.

"I don't even know if I will be the manager next time around! The other coaches did not show much interest but I was glad to take part in something like this. I am sure everyone back home is sitting up and paying attention and I just know the other managers have been thinking how they would do things differantly. So I would say next time around it will be put to the fans as to who will play and who will be in charge."

"We have a lot of very good youngsetrs coming through the minors in the WVL and some of them are just frightening! With the players we have now and their experiance, if you add a bit more young blood and enthusiasm into the mix then we will a team to be feared once again."

Muppetus Galacticus manages the Belington Bears in the WVL and holds a career record of 310-275, never finishing below .500. They are currently in a battle for their division and a place in the finals.

--------------------------------------------

Now a look at the rest of the league and the drama continues today as the FLB missed their chance to win the division by losing their last 2 games. So they now go into a one game playoff against IPBball. The IPBball team have a fearsome pitching staff and some serious speed around the bases. The FLB do not have a single number they can be proud of, but they have a third chance to take the divsion.

The teams that will be in playoffs are

Pool A
Group 1 winners - C2C 7-3
Group 2 winners - FLB/IPBball 5-6
Group 3 winners - NBL 9-1
Wildcard winner - XBL 7-3

Pool B
Group 4 winners - NLB 7-3
Group 5 winners - MaxLB 7-3
Group 6 winners - TPL 7-3
Wilwcard winner - NBA 6-4

--------------------------------------------

Next time we will be looking at who won Group 2 and from then on a review of each playoff game until the end.
