Ralph Betcher 1976, Al Cohen 1976, Elmer Guckert 1976, Joe Schratz 1976
Thumbing through the 1977 Pirates yearbook and low and behold what's in their "year in review" but a beautiful print of the wire service photo depicting four strikebreakers who worked the Bucs-Cubs game of May 21, 1976.
Using ID's here and the box score which of course nails the home plate ump wearing the protector, they are, left to right, Ralph Betcher, Elmer Guckert, Cubs' Manager Jim Marshall, Pirates' captain Willie Stargell, Al Cohen, and Joe Schratz. Schratz came back to work 16 games as an NL replacement during the 1976 strike, for the others they were one-game guys. All were from greater Pittsburgh. |

Dave Perez 1979 Missing Umpire
Think I have the right Dave Perez here, but not 100% sure. Our replacement umpire, according to Retrosheet, made all of his 15 major league appearances at the Seattle Kingdome in 1979. This Dave Perez is pictured umpiring a college game nine years later in Spokane, Washington. The game was between Gonzaga and Portland State of the Pac-12 Conference. The photo was from the Spokane Spokesman-Review of May 19, 1988.

Don Slattery 1979 Missing Umpire
A featured article about Slattery in the Oct. 12, 1979 issue of the New York Daily News spends most of its ink speaking to his basketball career, but it also mentions that he made appearances in Shea and Yankee Stadiums during the umpire disputes. The basketball uniform in this photo is from NYC's John Adams High School around 1950.

Bruce Martine 1991 Missing Umpire
According to his obituary, this major league umpire's actual name was Bruce E. Martin. The obituary may be viewed at:
https://www.phillytrib.com/bruce-e-m...df69ff1ed.html He umpired his one major league game on April 8, 1991. Retrosheet lists him as Bruce Martine. I also checked a couple of contemporary newspapers for the box score of the Montreal-Pittsburgh game of April 8, 1991, and they listed him as Martine, umping at first base that evening. The photo is from a webpage of pictures from the 2005 Philadelphia Catholic League Championship final baseball game. As can be seen in the obit, Bruce Martin was from Philadelphia and was a devout Catholic. The ECAC lettering on his cap stands for the Eastern College Athletic Conference. All four of the umps in the particular photo from which this image was drawn had the ECAC emblem on their caps. He was identified as Bruce Martin in the caption to the photo. Missing Umpire Benjamin Van Delft - 1875 NA
I located a photo of Benjamin Van Delft, who umpired one game in 1875. Van Delft was also the business manager of the 1875 Brooklyn Atlantics and was responsible for finding all of the random misfits on that club, who have driven baseball researchers mad for 145 years.
His photo appears in the December 8, 1911 Brooklyn Times Union along with his obituary. |
