Romano reveals that Lou Costello was an outstanding athlete who, as a teen in New Jersey, boxed 10 prelims using the name Lou King. He idolized a local fighter Johnny Lane and was a keen follower of the sport.

His "Looper" is described by the press in the film as a cross between Tony Galento and Benny Leonard and that's what I did with him.
