I can't believe how many active Japanese fighters you've cranked out. The ratings are real solid from the test conrests I've run. Not to have you divulge any proprietary secrets, what sources other than youtube and boxrec do you use? How do you determine the conditioning ratings from the fighters particularly if there is no descriptive material in boxrec or other sources? I'm looking forward to seeing you rate many more fighters.

Thanks a lot Sepia! I use the two sources primarily that you mentioned as well as Sweet Boxing - Boxing Forum which is just awesome for videos. Then I try to read up on fighters on fightnews.com or boxingscene.com After that it's mostly guess work. For conditioning it's kind of tough with newer fighters because they don't have the body of work typically to let you know if they will tire in the 8th, 9th 10th, or championship rounds. So I just use there body of work.. things like them getting stopped late, or seeing them visibly tire in a video. Some guys are just so hard to do in that area and knockdowns... For instance how would you rate Tyson before the Douglas fight? He always showed a good chin, and decent durability but he never had to work hard over 12 rounds. Tough.
I am glad you enjoyed these ratings. I only have a handful left, then I will take a short break and either go to Indonesia... or Poland. I am going to the Wach fight on Saturday and there are a few Polish boxers fighting so that might motivate me in that direction. |

The conditioning rating is one that is most speculative with my ratings too. I start with the presumption that most fighters are likely to be well-conditioned so I assign a 2 rating unless they fight frequently or infrequently. If I see fluctuations in weight from fight to fight I assign either a 3 or 4 rating. If I have specific information about the fighter such as management gripes, parties a lot, has evidenced mental or physical problems or whose performance is erratic then I assign one of the specialty ratings that fits most closely (5-12) I see conditioning as modeling the mental/physical shape the fighter is in going into the fight. The endurance rating is the one I use to model when the fighter should tire in a fight assuming normal punishment. I also use the length of their fights as the primary measuring stick. Because I rate fighters on their proficiency - whether they are a 4,6,8 or 10 round fighter - there is some correlation to endurance. If I rate a fighter as 6 in profiency, I'm unlikely to give the fighter more than 5 or 6 in endurance. It seems that the computer game differs from the board game in this regard. In the board game, you would adjust the fighter's base endurance rating to the length of the bout. It does not appear to be the case with with TBCB2.5. Maybe the design team will take a look at this before TBCB3.0
Regarding your Tyson example, perhaps I change his conditioning rating for the Douglas fight to 5 (party animal) or 12 (seldom trains). There were reports that he rarely trained in Tokyo and spent most of time with the Japanese ladies. With either of those conditioning ratings, he'll come into the fight anywhere from 35% to 70% of the time in less than good shape. If I was replaying the fight, I would just assign one of those ratings. Indonesia and Poland seem like good choices as both have a number of decent unrated fighters. |
