OOTP Noobie - Tips & Advice
Hey all - I am a newbie to OOTP. I didn't even know this game existed until yesterday, but I am super excited to start playing. I used to love simming multi-year dynasties in Sammy Sosa Baseball by managing the entire minor and major farm systems. This is obviously way more detailed, and I am excited to get started.
I bought the game last night and spent a couple hours poking around. To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed. I created a fictional league and rushed through things to start. I think I need to learn the game first and ease my way in. I guess I have a couple questions: - How would people suggest I start to really understand the game and not feel totally overwhelmed? - Would it be useful to start a league as a manager in a minor league system, leaving all of the GM stuff up to the AI and work my way up to the majors and a GM role? - Any other tips or advice anyone has to really get immersed into the features of this game? Thanks in advance for the help! I'm super excited to get started. CappyAA |

But your efforts will be rewarded sooner or later. OOTPB is really the best baseball game out there. My personal recommendation is, first, keep it small. Start with an 8-team league with a single level of minors. Secondly, focus on the basics. The number of options in the game could really be overwhelming. Turn off most of the options (Financials, Rule 5 Draft, Minor League Option Years, etc). You may also initially play only as GM (that is, let the AI manage your games) to keep things simple. Later on, once you get the hang of it, you can manage your games (if that's your preference), and also turn on the options that you're comfortable with. Lastly, feel free to ask questions in this forum. A lot of our forum members are really very helpful. Don't let the the complexity of the game overwhelm you. If you try to keep it small at the start, and focus on the basics you'll eventually get the hang of it, and find it a very enjoyable experience... |

One rookie to another
If I were just starting (which I was doing not very long ago) I would start a game that I planned to not complete, just a month or two of games to learn the mechanics.
I would start in Commissioner mode, no minors below AAA, and running some team that is NOT my favorite (but maybe a team in your favorite team's division . . .you might learn something about your favorite) With the pressure of winning off, you can try out various choices. Blunders will become interesting learning experiences, not annoying threats to your season. After a couple of games look for tabs that you have never selected, to see what they do. |
