Collection Missions General Discussion

There's been some sentiment for a sub forum or at least a place/thread where collectors (and those going on missions) can discuss this stuff in a concentrated type of way.

Have at it...

OK, I guess I'll go first...

I've been enjoying the missions so far although it can be difficult to add so much inventory when you are F2P. I had 33 cards in my collection last week and I'm closing in on 500 now.

In many cases, I've found that I'm 1 card away from completing various sets. It always seems like there's that one elusive card that appears unfathomably rarely on the AH, and that it makes no sense for that one particular card to be so elusive (LIVE Michael Fulmer, seriously?) I think I was 1 card shy of about 10 different sets at one point yesterday.

Today, I've been able to add Ben Lively for 500 PP (yuck), Yan Gomes for 100 PP (not awful), and Shawn Armstrong/Mychal Givens for 200 PP/400 PP (grudgingly) to complete my LIVE Royals, Brazilians, and LIVE Orioles sets respectively. Most of the SE cards are practically unplayable at Perfect level, but I think I'll keep them all just the same. I smell a 'collect X/Y of the SE cards' mission coming at some point. Missions about missions about missions. Things can get very meta.

My favorite SE card that I have so far (and I only have 4 of them) is the 2018 Whit Merrifield. Not a terrific card, but he fits my team's M.O. He's a fantastic baserunner, can train up to super elite in LF, and a decent (not great) platoon bat against LHP. I will keep him in mind for a roster spot in the future.

Besides a few of the rather mundane standard pack missions and the 1987 Twins behemoth that more or less took care of themselves, I have principally been chewing on the Mets missions.

I have the Live Mets whittled down to six cards that are missing: Familia (yuck), Frazier, Lowrie (still don't believe he's a Met, I demand proof!), Wheeler, Diaz, and Syndergaard.

Todd Frazier is one of those cards you just never seem to see on the auction house. He must be in more collections than that, but I can't find him anywhere else, either.

Lacking three cards for the '86 Mets, and a loooot more than that for the Amazin' Mets that frustratingly have four Nolan Ryan cards, none a Met, and not a single… I don't know, something trivial... a card with a box of shoe polish? A black cat? No? Hmz.

Hmm...20 cards...

1 Amos Otis Royal
4 Nolan Ryan (2 Astros, Angel, Ranger)
3 Tom Seaver (all Mets' versions)

Collecting the other 12 Amazin's is good enough for the '69 Seaver SE.

And you have the other 5 non-Mets cards that qualify since they were part of the Miracle / Amazin' Mets 1969...And the other 3 Tom Seaver cards in case all 12 is 1,2,3 too much.

I must say that I'd be substantially more frustrated about still being one card shy of several complete sets if I hadn't popped LIVE Javy Baez and Aroldis Chapman cards from the standard packs granted from other completed missions. Chapman provided some more PP fuel to keep collecting and I'm not sure what I'll do with Javy Baez yet, but the glut of cards in the AH (not getting sold even at a modest 6500-7000 PP ask) has me leaning toward keeping him as a platoon bat and also for the Cubs mission.

I have the diamond Seaver, which I once bought from the auction house. It was up at a manageable price just after I had pulled a perfect Bryce Harper (almost barfs) that hadn't sold for two or three days. Quick-sold the Harper and two other cards, bought Seaver for, if I remember right, 23,500 back then. He is worth more now (north of 35k I saw) for obvious reasons.

And I think I also saw the special Seaver on the auction house at one point, and he is not really *better* than the diamond Seaver…

But this is about HAVING it.

Tom hasn't shown up yet, but I sent him an invite, ha.
Actually I have his rookie card but it's confusing trying to play it in Perfects to say the least...

I just noticed a couple of the other players (Agee, ChiSox), Ed Charles (KC A's) are non-Mets as well.

I have 4 of the cards needed if I go that route to an improved '69 Seaver.

I basically have all the bronze and iron cards for that set, plus the (97) Seaver. The prices on the auction house for some of these cards are insane, like 3k for Jerry Grote (same for the 1986 Gary Carter btw...).

For 1986, I need Carter, Darling, and Ojeda.

And the live Mets are down to Familia, Frazier, Lowrie, Diaz, and Syndergaard. Speculating that Diaz will be silver come tomorrow, so there's that. But Thor's on the DL, and the prices are up...

And, unrelated, how many Terrance Gore cards have I trashed in this game and now they seem to be extremely valuable??

To the cartel of sellers/price gougers/scoundrels/thieves/mercenaries/unscrupulous business people that has decided on 1000 PP as the price for iron unsung heroes: may all of your sales go un-bidded upon and may you lose all of your PP in some sort of computer crash. You guys would probably charge someone $20 for a bottle of water in an emergency...

I can wait longer than you can!

Thankfully I left the Unsung Hero Iron business when they actually started to crop up in regular packs, except for two duplicates that are still lingering around on my Raccoons' inactive roster.

But, yeah… they are in packs now. I will probably pull all I need before I ever fork over 1k for one of them

It's a game and some people like to play the part of the game where you generate in-game PP to support your team. The AH is as much a part of the game as the core baseball matchups. Like you said - you can wait. But there are obviously others that can't and that is why the gouging exists.

Its not price gouging.

its called price discovery.

and its a market. which means buyers and sellers meet to determine a price.

and so far a lot of buyers are paying 1000 PP for UH Iron that are needed in collections. which makes sense. as it is far cheaper to pay that 1000 PP then 10 K+ for a historical diamond when they both serve the same purpose in getting a collection card.

I seem to have hit a nerve with my price gouging remark...

To-may-to, to-mah-to I suppose.

I'm torn - I'm perfectly fine with capitalism but it bugs me that PT Barnum was right....

Yeah, in general I think setting your prices to what people are willing to pay is perfectly fine. In fact, I always try to get a small cut on top of my auction fee when I decide to sell a card that I had intended to use.

I think where I personally draw the line (not that anyone needs to care) is when people are engaging in cartel behavior. When one (or a few people) are basically changing the entire economy of the game by severely altering the supply and then marking up 100x, 200x, 1000x, 2000x etc. To invoke "well, that's how markets work" is a bit incomplete when you're talking about free markets vs restricted supply markets (cartels, monopolies). I still assert that what has been going on this past week is 100% certifiable price gouging. I also think that a handful of guys getting fat and rich while most of the PT'verse can't complete collections is, in general, a bad thing for the game. I'm not sure that's how the developers wanted it to work, although, to be cynical, it does incentivize more people to buy PP. So...maybe this is actually a mixed thing for the game and more of a gray area. Good thing it's just a game, and not some actual resource we need in real life, LOL.

Like you said...P.T. Barnum and all. Some people just cannot wait or don't want to. And until this throng of buyers works its way through the system, guys will keep their listing prices at 'price gouging' levels and think themselves justified by market forces in doing so.

I think some people are taking this game WAY too seriously.

Time to invoke OOTP socialism so all can have what they need to survive in the game.

Nah, just don't prove PT Barnum right over and over again and everything will correct itself.
