Dynasty - Calgary Flames

I came to the forums here looking for a some technical help and stumbled across the Dynasty threads and they, along with the latest patch, really got me interested in this game again.

So I decided to give one a shot. I chose the Calgary Flames as they seem ripe for a rebuild.

I simmed through the 2013/14 season with injuries and trades off, taking over the team at the end of the playoffs.

I'm fairly inexperienced with the game, but hopefully this turns out all right.

2014 Entry Draft

I took over the Flames at the end of the regular season. My predecessor extended the contracts of nearly all potential free agents this summer. I have $16 million for Free Agents and $41 million for extensions. Which means I should be able to sign and keep a few free agents.

We should also get a good draft pick, having finished second last in the league.

Looking at the roster, our defence core is pretty solid. So I will focus on forwards, particularly RW where we are particularly weak and also a goaltender. Kari Ramo is a solid enough goalie with future potential, but we should look at other options.

On draft day I made trade gestures to both the Islanders and Sabres trying to get a second top draft pick by dangling Mike Cammellari and top prospect Emile Poirer along with a 2nd round pick. Both wanted more than that and I decided not to pull the trigger.

Our top draft picks were:
Round 1. S. Bennet (LW)
Round 2. V. Husso (G)
Round 3. R. Fabbri (C)

News from around the league:

Mike Babcock hired as head coach for Penguins

Significant Trades:
June 6: Moulson (MIN) to Nashville for Filip Forsberg
June 17: Zidlicky (NJ) to Blackhawks for Klas Dahlbeck
June 21: Brunner (NJ) to Columbus for David Savard
June 22: 12 Draft day trades, nothing major, mostly moves to free up contract space.

Free Agency and Off Season

July 1:
We opened the free agency period with a bang by signing the number one available FA, Ryan Callahan. The Lightning decided not to pursue an extension after an early exit in the playoffs while Callahan's former team, along with Martin St. Louis, went on to win the Cup. We signed him for 6 years at $5.6 million per year. This move gives our top young player Sean Monahan another top tier partner on the first line, along with Jiri Hudler.

July 2:
All in all the roster is shaping up nicely. The biggest problem we have is fourth line veteran Mike Cammalleri's massive salary. At $7.5 million, he is going to be hard to trade, and we would much rather use that cap space. He has been place on waivers, though we are not expecting much interest due to his contract.

July 3:
Signed first round pick Sam Bennet to a 3 yr entry level contract.

July 4:
Cammalleri clears waivers and we exercise our buyout option. We will pay $2.5m for the next 6 years. We also re-signed Kari Ramo to a 3 yr extension worth 2.9m a year.

July 30
Signed centre Derek Roy. This turned out to be a mistake as our scouting was off base on his ability. Instead of centering our fourth line, he will likely serve as a backup player. The cost was low, so not a huge blow to our budget.

July 31
Signed wingers Jussi Jokinen and Milan Michalek to fill out our forwards. Michalek will play RW on the second line, while Jokinen will play LW on the 4th line.

Sept. 7
Signed prospect goaltender Zach Fucale.

Significant Signings (Over $2m/yr):
Thomas Vanek to Sabres 6 years/$36.5m
Darcey Kuemper to Wild 3 yrs/$14.5m
Brooks Orpik to MTL 3yrs/$6m
Mayson Raymond to MTL 3yrs/$9.5m
Steve Downie to DET 3yrs/$8.6m

Yeah, what's up with needing admin/moderator approval for those posts containing pics? My latest (dynasty) post has been 'waiting on approval' for 60 hours now, and counting.

Good luck in season 2 - would like to check out your opening night lineup!

Opening night lineup:

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Reinhart - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - M.Backland - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - M.Klimchuk - D.Jones

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

K.Ramo
J.MacDonald

Oct. 1
Chicago 4 @ Calgary 1

This was going to be a tough first game and it lived up to expectations. The Flames put up a good effort, but were outgunned by the top six from Chicago. To make matters worse, Kari Ramo was forced to leave the game halfway through with an upper body injury. Team doctors later confirmed the back injury as a herniated disc, he will miss 2 weeks.

Sven Baertschi scored the lone Flames goal, assisted by Reinhart and Giordano.

Oct. 5
Calgary 2 @ Arizona 4

The first road game results in another loss. Journeyman netminder Joey MacDonald in net for the injured Ramo, and prospect goalie Fucale brought up to serve as backup. The third line was responsible for all the offense tonight. Tough loss as the Flames outshot the Coyotes 40-23, but Mike Smith stole the game for them.

Oct. 7
Pittsburgh 1 @ Calgary 6

Finally our offence comes together and we get our first win of the year in decisive fashion. MacDonald has a great rebound game after his questionable performance in the previous outing. The only troubling thing is the lack of offense from our first line, still no points on the season from them.

Oct. 10
Boston 4 @ Calgary 3

Our final home game before a six game road trip is a close fought battle ultimately lost to the Bruins. Some bad penalties resulted in 2 PP goals for the Bruins. The good news is the first line got their first goal as Hudler scored the Flames' third goal off a nice pass from Monahan.

News from around the league:
Patrice Bergeron (BOS) injured (lower abdominal strain) out 3 weeks.
Jaroslav Halak (WAS) out 3 weeks with finger sprain.
Chris Kelly (BOS) out 2 weeks with back injury
Steve Downie (DET) out 3 weeks (separated shoulder)
Ryan Strome (NYI) out 4 weeks (intercostal strain)
Alexander Semin (OTT) out 3 weeks (sprained ankle)

Trades:
Blackhawks trade Versteeg to Islanders for 3rd round pick.
Blues trade Morrow to Islanders for 3rd round pick.
Hurricanes trade Carrick to Islanders for 3rd round pick.

Up Next: 6 games on the road.

The Flames now begin a tough six game road trip out east.

After going 1-3 in our first four games, head coach Joe Nieuwendyk shuffled the lines to try to spark some offence:

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - M.Reinhart - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Backland - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - M.Klimchuk - D.Jones

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

J.MacDonald
F.Fucale

Oct. 12
Calgary 4 @ Detroit 2
The lines changes seemed to help and we got great goaltending from MacDonald. Great start to the road trip. Ryan Callahan gets his first goal as a Flame, Monahan, Reinhart, and Wideman get the others. 3 pt night for Wideman.

Oct. 14
Calgary 2 @ Philadelphia 4
MacDonald had an off night tonight. We outshot the Flyers 46-26, yet couldn't beat Mason more than twice to take the win.

Oct. 15
Calgary 1 @ New Jersey 3
Back to back games means Fucale gets to make his NHL debut. Nerves may have got the best of him as he let in two goals in the first 3 minutes of the game before settling in. Unfortunately, our offense couldn't bail him out tonight.

So after two straight losses, lines were reshuffled again:

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Reinhart - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - M.Backland - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - S.Bennett - B.McGrattan

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

J.Ortio
J.MacDonald

Back to the opening night lineup for the top 6, brought up our top prospect Sam Bennett from Abbotsford along with tough guy Brian MacGrattan. Klimchuk and Jones healthy scratches. Fucale doesn't seem ready for regular NHL action so we brought up another young netminder, Joni Ortio to start next game.

Oct 16
Traded Matt Stajan to Colorado for Defenseman Markus Lauridsen. Stajan was unhappy to be cut from the team and when this trade was proposed by the Avalanche we took the opportunity to move him to an organization where he'll get a chance to play regularly. Lauridsen will report to the Abbotsford Heat.

Oct 17
Calgary 1 @ Columbus 2
Ortio and Bennet make great debuts. Even though we lost the game, Bennett registered an assist in his first NHL game while Ortio held us in this tight match up.

Oct 19
Calgary 7 @ Buffalo 6
Not a good night for the goalies, but great night for Sven Baertschi who gets a hat trick as the Flames beat the surprisingly undefeated Sabres. Ortio was again the starting goalie. Two starts in three days was maybe too much for him and he let in 6 on 26 shots.

Oct 22
Calgary 3 @ Boston 2
Kari Ramo back from injury and starts tonight. Ortio will stay with the Flames as the regular backup. Joey MacDonald sent to Abbotsford. MacGrattan is out, Jones back in on the 4th line. Young Bennett stays in. Good game with Ramo in fine form on his return.

And so the road trip ends with the Flamees taking 6 of 12 possible points. All in all a decent outcome considering we were without our starting goalie for most the trip. The first line seems to be playing well now, and the young Bennett has made a decent NHL debut.

The Flames are now 5-8-1, sitting 9th in the west.

News from around the league:
Ondrej Palat (TBL) out for 5 months with fractured elbow.
Jonathan Huberdeau (FLA)out 4 weeks with torn ankle ligaments.
Max Pacioretty (MTL) out 3 weeks with strained abdominal muscle.
Chris Kunitz (PIT) out 4 weeks with strained quad.
Patrice Bergeron (BOS) out 3 weeks with a fractured rib.

Next up: back home for a game against the Flyers before a short west coast road trip.

The lineup for the next set of games:

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Reinhart - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - M.Backland - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - S.Bennett - D.Jones

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

K.Ramo
J.Ortio

Oct. 24
Philadelphia 2 @ Calgary 3
This game got off to a wild start with a fight between Ladislov Smid and the FLyer's Luke Schenn 8 seconds into the first. After that we shut down their first line wall, keeping Giroux off the board and with a -1 rating. Monahan and Baertschi each had 1G,1A.

Oct. 26
Calgary 3 @ Vancouver 4
Tough loss to the rival Canucks. We tied the game early in the third, but Daniel Sedin put in his third of the night with just over 2 minutes left.

Oct. 27
Calgary 0 @ San Jose 4
Ortio in for the second of back to backs. Not a lot of positives in this game. Way too many give aways on our part, and the Sharks beat us in all aspects of the game.

Oct. 29
Detroit 5 @ Calgary 2
D.Jones a healthy scratch tonight and MacGrattan in on the 4th line. We went into the third tied 2-2, and Pavel Datsyuk scored a hat trick in the period to bury us. We actually played a better game, giving away the puck less, but we did not capitalize on the Red Wings mistakes enough.

Nov. 2
Toronto 1 @ Calgary 1
Jones back in the line up, and we brought up youngster Emile Poirier to rejuvenate things. We played well tonight, but we need to work on our special teams. The Leafs took 16 minutes of penalties to our zero and we failed to get more than one powerplay goal.

The Flames are now 5-6-1, sitting last in the Pacific, and 13th of 14 in the west. We need to turn things around on the upcoming road trip.

News from around the league:
Logan Couture (SJ) out 4 weeks with knee sprain.
Niklas Kronwall (DET) out 3 weeks with a strained hamstring.
Dustin Brown (LAK) out 2 week with a strained back.
Barrett Jackman (STL) out 2 weeks with herniated disc.

Curiously, Florida has listed centre Vincent Trocheck as day-to-day with a ruptured collateral ligament, but he could miss 11 months.

League leaders:
Phil Kessel leads the league with 21 pts in 15 games.
Daniel Sedin has 13 goals in 15 games.

The Flames set out on a four game road trip with some new lines once again in attempt to jolt this team into life:

S.Baertschi - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
C.Glencross - J.Hudler - M.Michalek
S.Bennett - M.Reinhart - J.Jokinen
E. Poirier - M.Backland - J.Colberne

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

K.Ramo
J.Ortio

Nov. 5
Calgary 3 @ Tampa Bay 6
Terrible game for Ramo tonight. We dominated the Lightning is shots 40-28 and he let in 5 on 21 shots before the third. Ortio went in for the final frame. Sam Bennett picked up 10 minutes in penalties.

Nov 7
Calgary 1 @ Florida 1
Ramo back in form in this game, but we had too many give aways (13) and we went 0 for 8 on the powerplay.

Nov 9
Calgary 2 @ Washington 4
Despite the score, we played a better game in Washington with only 8 give aways and less penalties. However we only managed 19 shots on Halak. Curtis Glencross scored both our goals and Milan Michalek assisted on both.

Nov 10
Calgary 1 @ Winnipeg 2
Another bad game. Low SOG, too many give aways. Our special teams did better going 1/3 on man advantage and kept the Jets 0 for 6 on their power plays.

Nov 12
Traded G Joey MacDonald to San Jose for a 3rd round pick.

So a dismal one point of 8 possible on this road trip. The Calgary Flames are now 5-12-2 this season. Last in the Pacific, last in the Western Conference.

News from Around The League:
Signings:
Dwight King signs with LA Kings 2/yrs $4.5m.

Injuries:
Max Pacioretty (MTL) out 4 weeks with a sprained ankle.
Joel Ward (WAS) out 3 weeks with a sprained ankle.
Gabriel Landeskog (COL) out 4 weeks with a sprained UCL.
Martin Hanzal (ARZ) out 3 weeks with a sprained wrist.
Tyler Bozak (TOR) out 4 weeks with a sprained ankle.
Zach Bogosian (WPG) out 4 weeks with an oblique strain.

League Leaders:
Phil Kessel (TOR) and Ryan Johanson (CBL) lead the league in points (24)
Daniel Sedin (VAN) has 14 goals.
Patrick Kane (CHI) has 18 assists.
Ryan Miller (STL) leads all goalies with a 2.17 GAA and .933 SV%.

In spite of the poor performance on the recent road trip, Head Coach Nieuwendyk decides to stick the the same lines in the hope they just need time to gel.

The result is disastrous:

Nov 13
Nashville 8 @ Calgary 1
Nov 15
Los Angeles 8 @ Calgary 2
Nov 16
Calgary 1 @ Edmonton 3

So the team returns to something resembling their default line arrangement while searching for an answer.

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Reinhart - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - M.Backland - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - E.Poirier - D.Jones

L.Smid - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

K.Ramo
J.Ortio

In addition, I begin actively looking to add some forwards with defensive capability, looking at our forwards we only have a couple decent two way forwards. We could use a solid two-way third liner.

Nov 19
NY Islanders 5 @ Calgary 1
Nov 21
Tampa Bay 6 @ Calgary 2

In an effort to add a two way forward from the bottom 6 we trade for Travis Moen from Montreal. We sent over Keegan Koezig, a decent young defenceman. He replaces David Jones on the fourth line.

Nov 25
Winnipeg 5 @ Calgary 0
Nov 28
Calgary 1 @ Dallas 2

The slide continues. In the meantime, we finalize a deal for C Patrik Berglund from St. Louis. We send them Ladislov Smid and San Jose's third round pick. This is a big addition to the lineup. Berglund becomes our most expensive player. He will immediately take over center on the third line with Glencross and Colberne. Wotherspoon takes Smid's spot for now, and we sit Moen for McGrattan.

J.Hudler - S.Monahan - R.Callahan
S.Baertschi - M.Reinhart - M.Michalek
C.Glencross - P.Berglund - J.Colberne
J.Jokinen - M.Backland - B.McGrattan

T.Wotherspoon - D.Wideman
M. Giordano - C.Butler
K.Russell - T.Brodie

K.Ramo
J.Ortio

Nov 29
Calgary 5 @ NY Islanders 2
Our only win in all of November. We get the win despite being outplayed badly. But maybe the Berglund trade is the answer to get the team motivated.

Calgary finished November with a 6-19-2 record. Bottom of division, conference, and league.

New from around the league:
Injuries:
Cam Ward (CAR) out 4 week with knee sprain.
Alex Ovechkin (WAS) suffers season ending injury. He will be out 8 months with fractured elbow.
Eric Staal (CAR) out 3 weeks with shoulder soreness.
Ryan Strome (NYI) out 4 weeks with sprained wrist.
Valeri Nichushkin (DAL) out 3 weeks with sprained ankle.
Shea Weber (NAS) out 2 weeks with strained hamstring.
Clarke MacArthur (OTT) out 4 weeks with strained hamstring.
Nick Bonino (ANA) out 3 weeks with intercostal strain.
Bryan Little (WPG) out 3 weeks with bruised spinal cord.

Trades:
LA Kings trade recently signed Dwight King to Montreal for 3rd round pick.
Columbus trades RW Damien Brunner, LD Gianluca Curcuruto, LW Maksim Mayorov to St Louis for G Jake Allen.

Signings:
Mike Fisher signs with Nashville, 2 yrs, $4.9 million/yr.

Flames December Update

The team has started playing well so I simmed daily, but quickly through the whole month of December:

Dec 1
Calgary 5 @ Nashville 2
Monahan 2G,1A; Hudler 3A; Callahan 1G,1A

Reinhart and Baerschti out with day to day injuries, Granlund brought up from Abbotsford. Bennett in.

Dec 3
Vancouver 1 @ Calgary 5
Backlund 3A; Butler 2A; Glencross 2G
Dec 5
St. Louis 4 @ Calgary 4
Russell 2A; Butler 1G,1A

Giordano will be out 2 weeks with sprained ankle. Ramage brought up to roster.

Dec 7
Edmonton 3 @ Calgary 2
Berglund 2G; Jokinen 2A

Jokinen out, D.Jones back in. Jokinen will miss 3 weeks with oblique strain.

Dec 10
NY Rangers 3 @ Calgary 4
Berglund 3G; Poirier 3A; Butler 2A
Dec 12
Montreal 0 @ Calgary 1
Monahan 1G; Butler 1A
Dec 13
Calgary 3 @ Arizona 5
Callahan 1G 2A; Hudler 1G 2A
Dec 15
Calgary 8 @ Anaheim 4
Monahan 1G 3A; Hudler 3G

Baertschi and Reinhart back from injury.

Dec 17
Calgary 3 @ San Jose 2
Glencross 2A; Reinhart 1G; Michalek 1A
Dec 19
Calgary 1 @ St. Louis 0
Callahan 1G; Monahan 1A; Hudler 1A
Dec 21
Colorado 4 @ Calgary 3
All stars from Avalanche
Dec 23
Calgary 1 @ Edmonton 1
Monahan 1G; Hudler 1A
Dec 27
Washington 1 @ Calgary 4
Callahan 2A; Monahan 1G; Reinhart 1A
Dec 28
Calgary 2 @ Vancouver 4
Hudler 1A

So the Flames go 9-3-2 in December, bringing our season record to 15-23-4. We move up to 5th in the Pacific, 12th in the West and 25th in the NHL. Still a long way to a playoff spot, but its within sights now.

Tampa Bay send RD Radko Gudas to LA Kings for G Martin Jones.

Injuries:
Matt Duchene (COL) out 2 weeks with knee contusion.
Francois Beauchemin (ANA) out 4 weeks with strained hamstring.
Patrick Kane (CHI) out 3 weeks with herniated disc.

Tomas Hertl (SJS) will miss 4 weeks with a strained hamstring.
Gustov Nyquist (DET) out for rest of the season with broken elbow bone. He'll be back in 7 months.
Anze Kopitar (LAK) out 4 weeks with fractured foot.
Zach Parise will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured disc injury. He will be out 7 months.
Evander Kane (WPG) will miss 3 weeks with strained hamstring.
Jeff Carter (LAK) will miss 3 weeks with chronic back injury.
Zach Bogosian (WPG) will miss 4 weeks with elbow strain.
Rick Nash (NYR) out 2 weeks with strained back.

Firings:
Jason Smith who replaces Paul Martin as head coach in Ottawa was fired on Dec 17th.
Bob Hartley hired as new Ottawa coach.
Paul Holmgren fired as GM from Philadelphia. Brian Burke will replace him.
Dave King out as head coach in Arizona, Paul MacLean hired as his replacement.
