19th century fighters.
Hartley in Jack Scroggins 19th Century Pugilist reprints several rare documents. Among these is an appendix entitled "Scale of relative Merit". Here 80 pugilists are ranked on the basis of five factors. They are rated on a scale of 0 to 10 on each of these factors and these points are totaled. The "perfect" pugilist would be rated at 50.
The five factors that are rated are: weight, strength, activity, skill, and bottom followed by the total. Fighters of different weights are compared to each other in this scale which includes the giant Bob Gregson and lightweight Barney Aaron. Two previous scales are mentioned: by Ned Topham and John Bee, but I've seen neither of these. Jem Belcher, the man Pearce defeated for the title, was the highest rated pugilist with 47 points. Following him were Tom Johnson 46, John Gully and the ill-fated Jack Shaw with 44 each, then came Pearce and Jack Power with 43 each. This is what the ratings looked like in a nutshell. Hen Pearce is viewed within the top 6 of 80 men. Here is a copy of the 80 guys ranked in the Scroggins' appendix p43-44 taken from the Annals of Pugilism circa 1828. Barney Aaron 4/5/8/5/6/28 Bill Abbott 6/9/1/3/9/28 Dick Acton 9/8/1/3/9/31 Aby Belasco 5/5/7/7/5/29 Jem Belcher 8/9/10/10/10/47 Tom Belcher 5/6/10/9/9/39 Isaac Bitton 8/7/6/7/6/34 Ned Brown 3/4/8/7/7/29 Jack Broughton 8/9/6/10/9/42 Ben Burn 9/10/6/5/7/37 Jem Burn 6/6/6/7/8/33 Jack Cabbage 5/6/6/7/7/31 Tom Cannon 7/7/8/7/8/37 Jack Carter 8/8/9/5/5/35 George Cooper 7/6/6/8/8/35 Jack Cooper 5/5/5/3/6/24 Peter Crawley 8/7/6/9/7/37 Tom Cribb 9/9/4/5/10/37 Jack Curtis 4/5/6/7/10/32 Dick Curtis 4/4/6/8/9/31 Cy Davis 5/5/8/7/6/31 Dan Dogherty 5/6/7/7/6/31 Dan Donnelly 10/10/2/1/5/28 Dutch Sam 5/6/9/8/8/36 Bill Eales 6/6/7/7/6/32 Firby, (i.e.Fearby)Jack 9/9/6/6/4/34 Andrew Gamble 10/10/4/1/2/27 Charley Gibbletts 5/7/8/8/7/35 Bob Gregson 10/10/2/2/8/32 John Gully 8/8/9/9/10/44 Tom Hall (Isle of Wight)6/6/7/6/5/30 Bill Hall (Birmingham) 5/5/5/4/3/22 Dick Hares 4/5/5/6/8/28 Harry Harmer 7/7/9/8/9/40 George Head 5/6/9/10/7/37 Tom Hickman 6/8/9/3/10/36 Harry Holt 4/4/9/7/5/29 Josh Hudson (Hodgson) 9/8/7/6/9/39 Dav Hudson 5/5/10/4/7/31 Dick Humphries 5/5/8/9/8/35 Peace Inglis 4/6/6/8/10/34 John Jackson 8/8/7/10/7/40 Tom Johnson 8/9/9/10/10/46 Paddington Tom Jones 5/6/9/9/8/37 John Kendrick 9/8/6/3/7/33 Jack Langan 9/10/5/3/10/37 Jack Lenney 3/4/6/5/7/25 Jack Martin 5/5/7/7/7/31 Reuben Martin 5/5/5/5/5/25 Arthur Mathison 4/4/7/6/7/28 Dan Mendoza 5/6/9/10/8/38 Tom Molineaux 9/10/6/5/9/39 Ned Neale (Streatham) 5/7/7/8/8/35 Bill Neat 9/9/5/7/6/36 George Nicholls 5/7/7/7/8/34 Bill Nosworthy 5/6/7/9/8/35 Tom Oliver 8/8/5/6/9/30 Tom Owen 7/6/6/4/5/28 Ned painter 9/9/5/5/9/37 Joe Parish 6/5/5/6/5/27 Hen Pearce 8/10/8/9/8/43 Jack Power 7/8/9/9/10/43 Bob Purcel 9/8/6/5/9/37 Jack Randall 5/6/10/7/8/36 Aleck Reid 4/5/8/6/6/29 Bill Richmond 6/5/10/5/5/31 Phil Sampson 8/7/6/5/6/32 Jack Scroggins 5/6/9/2/10/32 Bishop Sharp 5/5/8/8/7/33 Jack Shaw 9/9/8/8/10/44 Tom Shelton 8/9/6/7/9/39 Tom Spring (Winter) 9/9/8/8/7/41 Ned Stockman 4/4/7/9/5/29 Jack Tisdale (Teasdale) 4/4/6/6/5/25 Ned Turner 5/4/8/7/10/34 Jem Ward 8/9/8/9/5/39 Bill Warr (Ward) 5/6/9/9/7/36 Bob Watson 5/5/8/7/6/31 Dick West (West co,) 5/6/8/7/10/36 Jem Wynnes 6/5/9/7/6/33 Gilbert Odd in his Encyclopedia of Boxing has short bios of 40 pugilists. Bob Mee's Bare Fists is a recent publication that gives a good single volume coverage of the Prize Ring Era. Tony Gee's Up to Scratch gives single volume coverage, but is focused on a single locale near London. Trevor Wignall's 1928 Prides of the Fancy looks at all time greats by weight class and includes prize ring pugilists. Pearce Eagan's Boxiana and Miles Pugilistica are three volume primary resources and worth looking at if you can find them. They illustrate the flavor of the period with descriptions of fights. In their discussion of boxers Miles is often at odds with Eagan's accounts and descriptions. Hennings 2 volume Fighting for the Championship is another older primary resource. Of these three Boxiana have been recently reprinted by Nicoll Island Publishing in Canada. Don Cogswell of IBRO reviewed them for, if memory serves, the Trunzo's Electronic Boxing Weekly. Mee's book also was well reviewed by Choice, a source of current reviews for academic libraries. Bear Last edited by bear; 10-06-2005 at 09:37 PM. |

Plantagenet Green
Reposting one of the lost creations.
Plantagent JAE Green lw 3 1851-1872 English aka Edward Green aka "Jem Burns's Black" aka John Augustus Edward Plantagent Green aka "Billy Croft's Black" not in boxrec no pic Kevin Smith describes him as a fighter who had more skill than courage in "Black Genesis". 1851-07-15 Fred Dickerson L 149 (269 min) purse 20 pounds 1853-06-01 Shylock (Patton's Waiter) w (20 min) 1854-02-11 Jerry Noon L 34 (82 (min) 1857-12-23 Jesse Hatton w 78 (118 min) Strange as this may seem, Dowling's Fistiana 1868 lists two fighters with the name Plantagenet Green. One identified as Black, the other as from London. In 1872 ko'd in 2 by John McConnell in Nat Langham's London Pub. I'd guess 1830 for date of birth. Source material Bill Mathews The English Boxing Champions (1872-1910) and Record Book, Kevin Smith's Black Genesis, and private emails with Kevin. Bear Last edited by bear; 10-06-2005 at 09:16 PM. |

I tried to transfer their files here but have gotten illegal file type messages for the tbdx2 files.
Will desist til the problem is resolved. Bear Last edited by bear; 10-03-2005 at 08:56 PM. |

Bill Baxter
Third repost of a fighter lost when the forum crashed.
Bill Baxter box rec 100466 bw 5 1881-1897 One of four boxing brothers. Grew up in Shoreditch, London. Home base was The Blue Anchor presided over by Bill Richardson and later by Tom Symonds. Well schooled there. From endurance fights he learned that economy of movement saved energy. Tried to position himslf at ring center and let his opponent do the running. Cool, patient and methodical. Accurate hitter. Exponent of the straight left. Prefered to exhibit sporstsmanship and not use killer instinct when he hurt a man. Often gave weight. Best at 8 stone 8 lbs Baxter was a bw Bow Cup title holder. He faced Fred Johnson, created by DJDay for his Dixon replay, at least nine times. They were fairly matched in skill, but Baxter, given his fighting philosophy, didn't fare well in their short encounters. In bouts of longer duration he did much better. To the various board members who suggested downloading IRFAN View as an image editing tool let me express my thanks. The Baxter jpg was my first "successful" effort at resizing an image. I think I'm getting the hang of some simple operations.
