Player Retires Mid-Season during playoff race

I just had aplayer announce his retirement with four games left in the season when our teamis in first place. The player was in thestarting roster.

The player isgone from the roster. I think it would make more sense for the player to retireat the end of the season. His age is 35,but the timing does not seem correct.

I think it is a bug. If the email provided some more details I might chalk it up to a story line.

Anyone have any ideas about this issue.

Thanks,

Malor

If he retired in the middle of a major league playoff push, I would agree there is a problem. But a minor league playoff push, I do not think there is a problem. The guy was 35, and not in the majors. Maybe he realized he was not going to make it again to the MLB, and hung up his cleats.

His bos....I mean his wife said he needed to stay home.

Family emergency, medical issues, etc. Yeah, sucks and seems wrong at face value, but you can easily come up with an reason.

Has it ever happened IRL?

Not the same sport and at a different point in the season, but Dave Cowens left the defending champion Celtics - a "retirement" because he claimed he had lost enthusiasm for the game - early in the 1976-77 season. He returned later that season, though, missing around 30 games.

Honestly as bad as it sucks, the timing makes sense. 35 year old looking for one last shot in the bigs. September came, no call up....he realized that was the end. After a long career, maybe the chance to play for a minor league championship just wasn't important.

While I personally would see the chance to to play for a title (and especially help the kids on the team who may have never been there and may never get there win one), I could see the logic.

It sucks, but.......

" . . . that sounds a lot like Dave McNally's sudden retirement from the Montreal Expos in 1975. McNally, obtained by the Expos from Baltimore in a trade for Ken Singleton and Mke Torrez, was 32 years old, had won 16 games and started a Championship Series game for Baltimore in 1974. He was supposed to be the 'pitching glue' that held together a Montreal youth movement. He won his first 3 decisions (in 4 starts) as an Expo, then proceeded to lose 6 in a row. He quit after losing to the San Diego Padres, went back to Billings, and pretty much stayed there until his premature death in 2002.

The thing about Mcnally too is ,he was only 116 wins away from 300 . Which was very doable at 32 years old.

Just goes to show that back in the day guys weren't all about numbers like they are now

Thanks for the comments.

I guess I don't see it as realistic. Even if he thought he was too old, he'd stick around a few more weeks for the paycheck.

When the game throws things like this at me is when I lose my sense of emersion. Situations like this require a storyline to make sense.

I would guess without seeing player card or any other details, it would probably be a storyline or an injury.

Reminds me of Stan Ross (Bernie Mac) from Mr. 3000 when he got 3000 hits and quits mid season.

Minor leaguers make next to nothing, so there would be no reason for him to stick around for the paycheck. Especially if this guy has been a big leaguer in the past and made real money.

Well, I had a talk with the teams' equipment trainer and found out the player, when he left, filled his bag with extra baseballs and other misc. equipment. Since he left the team without it's #3 starter for the playoffs, I have arranged for him to be billed for the missing equipment. The total comes to about three weeks pay. Guess he should not have been greedy and disloyal when he left.

Oh, it's realistic, what about John Kruk's retirement? He was hitting .308, got a single, and retired. I love this story.

Or even Ryan Dempster. If I recall correctly, he had a year left, but left baseball. Also, weirder that he and Gagne played in the WBC. I just wished Dempster had a better series.

I'm having trouble how 4 games left = mid season.

By any chance did he start the day before he quit? If so the timing seems fine. Players don't get paid in the playoffs so no minor league paycheck to entice.

See the image at the top of this thread. Four games were left in the season and the team was headed to the playoffs, which it did win.
