Out: RPI In:NET

The NCAA is going to use a new metric in judging trams for the tourney. RPI, gone. Giving higher weight to the last 10? Gone. I hope this metric starts forcing teams like dook & 'cuse to play credible teams on the road OOC.

What I don't like is that it caps the margin of victory @10. A team can dominate another for 35 minutes & then give up a bunch of meaningless garbage points to narrow the margin to under 20. Or a game can be tight til the last minute spreads the final from one possession to double digits. An 11pt "tighter than it looked" result shouldn't get the same weight as a "not even that close" 18 pt final.

#1 in Men's Basketball is...................

Ohio State?????

I'm not going to be too quick to judge these rankings.

1. Rankings in November are pointless.
2. These are starting from square one with no preconceived biases. Which I think is a plus. UNC, dook, Kansas, Kentucky etc. shouldn't be getting bonuses for reputations if you are going to come up with computer formulas that are neutral. Otherwise, they are still affected by human opinion and not by the action on the court.
3. The object is to get it "right" at the end. These aren't supposed to figure out who had the best season now. But in March, when everyone completes their year.

So let's see what we get in the spring. I will say it appears my thoughts on margin of victory are on point.

Latest rankings. These fall more in line with what you'd expect. Interesting seeing Wofford @ 26, between AP ranked Auburn & NCSt. The NET says Houston & Nevada basically should switch positions.
