June Review

A great month for the Suns. We went 20-6, although it could have been slightly worse as we won 6 games by 1 run.
The hitting as a team is improving and we've moved from the bottom half of most categories. There is a slight concern with the pitching, whilst we're still top in all but one category(strikeouts), our starters have been averaging just under 6 innings per start and a few times before the end of the month a couple of starters have lasted less than 5 innings. Hopefully this isn't the early sign of some arms beginning to fall off, as we don't have great depth in AAA and the potential decent arms in our system are in A ball or below.

Team Stats;

Hitting Stats;

Pitching Stats;

Down on the Farm:

AAA (Pacific Coast League) Reno Silver Sox: 44-32, 1st in the Northern Division, with a 3 game lead. June Record: 12-14.

Started out as a good month for the Silver Sox, but at the end of the month a 3-6 run turned a good month to an ok one. Raul Molina has continued to put Pacific Coast League pitchers to the sword and has had some good support from George Kelly and Jesse Chapman.
The pitching has been a mixed bag with some good performances and some that wouldn't be good enough in a beer league.

AA (Southern League) Jackson Generals: 22-54 (23.5GB), 5th in the North Division. June Record: 11-16.

A better month for the Generals, still under .500 but much closer to it than previous months. John Dover and Felix Godinez have hit AA running. Godinez has done enough that he will be the next arm up to the majors, Dover has an impressive record in terms of wins/loses but needs to cut down on the free passes, currently 5 BB/9. IF Bobbie Burton and OF Scott Tucker have both hit well.

A+ (California League) Stockton Ports: 42-35, 1st in the North Division. June Record: 11-16.

The Ports tailed off at the end of the month going 2-9. They've suffered a few minor injuries and lost a few guys to AA. IF Steve Belk and OF's Hector Hernandez and Estevan Carranza have hit well and may soon be knocking down the door to advance to AA. On the pitching side LHP Esteban Alba has produced some encouraging results.

A (Midwest League) Aurora Cougars: 36-40 (10GB), 6th in Eastern Division. June Record: 12-15.

Like our other teams, the Cougars had a very, very cold end to the month. There are a few standout performers from both sides of the diamond but a few more guys need to step up.

A- (Northwest League) Pasco Atoms: 5-10 (3GB), 4th in North Division.

Pitching as been good, hitting not so much and if you don't hit you aren't going to win. There have been a few hitters who look like they can handle this league and hopefully they'll produce some results in the next month.

R+ (Pioneer League) Missoula Timberjacks: 8-7 (0GB), 3rd in the North Division.

A promising start by the Timberjacks. Our 1st round draft pick Evan Bielawski has got off to a good start in pro-ball, but knows he's got a lot of developing to do and knows opposing pitchers will be looking to prevent him from getting hits. Pitcher Ray Martin has produced some good results and may soon be making his way to Pasco.

R (Arizona League) Suns: 6-9 (2GB), 6th in the West Division.

A slow start for the draft class of 1998. The pitching side has been good and shows some early signs of promise, the hitting side has not shown anything of note, hopefully in July they'll click into action as a hitting unit.

R (Dominican League) Suns: 14-10 (3GB), 4th in the Boca Chica South Division.

A promising start for our Dominican boys, the only concern is the lack of good starting pitching that we've had in the first month of the season. There are a few Dominican pitchers in our International Complex but they're not ready at the moment.

Next up for us is a visit to San Francisco before the 1st half of the season ends. It's a 3 game set vs the Miners who are 49-37 for the year in 2nd place in the NL West and are 5.5GB.

Projected starters:

LHP J.Flores 10-1 (3.35) vs LHP B.Wilcoxen 6-10 (5.37)

RHP B.Anderson 5-6 (3.66) vs LHP R.Salazar 11-4 (2.77)

Phoenix Suns:
7/1 Mike Crippen, GM of the Dallas Rangers, makes a trade proposal. He would send 25 year-old LHP Ruben Ortiz and wants 23 year-old RF Victor Serrano. I reject the offer.
7/2 McClary vs Hansen: Part 2. McClary is less than impressed with Hansen and said this to reporters, "It's hard when you're all working hard to win ballgames and then you have a guy like Hansen who isn't even running out ground balls in close games. It's not too much to ask to commit to playing hard for 9 innings every game."
7/3 25 year-old 1B/3B Bill Hansen is causing major waves in the Suns clubhouse, an altercation between him and McClary took place with team members quickly seperating the pair.

Trade:
7/3 25 year-old 1B/3B Bill Hansen is traded to the Boston Rebels for 27 year-old RHP Mike Zavala. Zavala will report to AAA Reno and Raul Molina is called up from AAA to take Hansen's spot on the 25 man roster.

Around the League:

Accomplishments:
6/30 25 year-old LF Carlos Rivera joined a select club off players who've hit 3 home runs in a game. For the year Rivera is hitting .259 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.

Awards:
7/1 24 year-old LF Bryan Hildreth(New York Bears) wins the AL player of the month award. He hit .317 in June with 12 home runs, 33 RBIs and 25 runs scored.
7/1 24 year-old Vic Mendez(Phoenix Suns) wins the NL player of the month award. He hit .324 in June with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
7/1 30 year-old Roberto Pazos(New York Bears) wins the AL pitcher of the month award. He went 4-0 in June, he threw 40 innings and racked up 35 strikeouts and logged an era of 1.35.
7/1 25 year-old Jeremy Huster(Milwaukee Hops) wins the NL pitcher of the month award. He went 5-1 in June, he threw 46 innings nd struck out 42 and logged a 2.74 era.
7/1 25 year-old Mark Kistler(Kansas City Huskers) wins the AL rookie of the month award. He hit .307 in June and hit 2 home runs with 5 RBIs.
7/1 24 year-old Vic Mendez(Phoenix Suns) wins the NL rookie of the month award. He hit .324 in June with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Suspensions:
7/1 31 year-old LF Travis Negus(LA Blue Sox) was handed a 2 game suspension when he didn't agree with an umpires call.

Trades:
7/3 30 year-old RHP Vinny Vega and 21 year-old minor league C Bill Sheilds are traded to the New York Metropolitans, in return New York send a pair of minor leaguers to the Kansas City Huskers, 21 year-old CF Carlos Ibarra and 23 year-old RHP Antonio Mendo.

International Amateur FA's period has started. There are several players who look like they have a big future in the Major Leagues.

Projected Starters;
RHP J.Thomas 10-4 (2.54) vs RHP N.Battaglia 7-8 (4.49)

Phoenix Suns:

Trade Offer:
7/4 Mel Walters(GM of the Metropolitans) makes a trade offer. He would send 28 year-old LHP Luis Navas and would like 29 year-old 2B R.Moore. I like Navas and was interested in him during the expansion draft but he's had a lot of injuries with his shoulder. Also we don't have a ready replacement for R.Moore.
7/7 Drake Brooks(GM of the Milwaukee Hops) makes a trade offer. The Hops would send 26 year-old 1B Bill Greenfield and would like 27 year-old RHP E.Benayoun.
7/9 Kevin Smith(GM of the Kansas City Huskers) makes a trade offer. The Huskers want 27 year-old RHP E.Benayoun and would send 27 year-old RF M.Lowry.

7/5 29 year-old RHP Mark Doull has recovered from his injury and heads to Reno for some rehab starts.

Contracts/Extensions:
7/5 16 year-old Venezuelan LHP Mario Bessy(290,000 bonus) If it all clicks into place he could hold a place in the middle of the rotation.
16 year-old Venezuelan CF Carlo De Leon($700,000 bonus) May not be able to stick in center but could handle a corner spot. Not a power hitter but a contact hitter with a good eye and blistering speed.
16 year-old Australian LHP Callum Dickson($400,000 bonus) Pretty raw at the moment but has the tools required to be a #2 starter if it all falls into place.
7/8 16 year-old Dominican C Santiago Espenoza signs with a $700,000 signing bonus. Espenoza looks like he could have a future catching in the Majors, on the hitting side he has a great eye and should be able to hit for a high average, not much pop in his bat.
7/9 16 year-old Aruban CF Vasil Noordzij signs with a $2,000,000 signing bonus, Noordzij has the tools to stick at CF and has plenty of pop in his bat.

Around the League:

7/4 27 year-old C Eduardo Diaz(Montreal Canadiens) recovery from knee inflamation has taken a setback and he's expected to miss at least another week.
7/7 28 year-old RHP Tyler Irvine(Detroit Robins) has tore his UCL and will miss at least 13 months.
