Bleeding Royal Blue - Victoria Royals (WHL) Dynasty

Introduction
Figured since the OHL & QMJHL are covered, someone should probably do a WHL one to complete the trifecta. The WHL ratings and rosters could definitely use a little work, so because of that I decided to go with a team that I don't know extremely well and chose the Victoria Royals, formerly the Chilliwack Bruins.

Team Overview & Preview
Last year the Royals finished 6th in the Western Conference with a 35-30-7 record, before being eliminated in the 1st round by the Western Conference runner-up Kamloops Blazers in 6 games. But with nearly their entire roster from last season returning, there should definitely be some improvement.

Goaltenders:
Both Patrik Polivka (28-16-5, 3.24 GAA, .894 SPCT) and Coleman Vollrath (4-12-2, 3.54 GAA, .888 SPCT) return and though both had rather unspectacular numbers last season, the fact that almost the entire D group is back should see those numbers improve and possibly quite significantly.

Defense:
This group will be led by Calgary Flames draft pick, tough physical Keegan Kanzig, though after that, with the exception of overager Jordan Fransoo (who is rated an 8.0? Seriously? How did anyone come up with that? He's a 2nd D-pair guy at best and a 3rd on a lot of teams.) the Royals defense is in general, quick and mobile, led in that regard by last year's top scoring D-man on the team 19 year old Brett Cote (72 GP, 8 G, 33 A, 41 PTS) and 17 year old Joe Hicketts (67 GP, 6 G, 18 A, 24 PTS as a rookie).

Forwards:
The Royals only lose 2 forwards from last year's core group, though unfortunately it happens to be leading scorer Alex Gogolev (49 GP, 20 G, 45 A, 65 PTS) and leading goalscorer Jamie Crooks (33 G in 69 GP). Returning though are 4 near point per game players last season in 19 year old center Brandon Magee, 20 year old right winger Ben Walker as well as 2 more 19 year old centers in Steven Hodges and Logan Nelson.

Roster Breakdown:
Starting Goalie: Patrik Polivka *import* (19, 7.5/9.5)
Backup Goalie: Cameron Vollrath (18, 5.5/7.5)
3rd Goalie: Hunter Jackson (18, 6.5/7.0) *signed FA*

1st D-Pair: Keegan Kanzig (18, 7.5/9.0) - Jordan Fransoo (20, 8.0/8.5)
2nd D-Pair: Brett Cote (19, 6.5/7.0) - Ryan Gagnon (17, 7.0/8.5)
3rd D-Pair: Joe Hicketts (17, 6.5/8.0) - Jack Walker (17, 5.5/7.0)
Odd man out: Kolton Dixon (18, 5.5/6.5)

1st Line: Steven Hodges (19, 6.5/8.5) - Brandon Magee (19, 7.0/8.0) - Austin Carroll (19, 7.0/7.5)
2nd Line: Luke Harrison (17, 6.5/7.5) - Logan Nelson (19, 6.5/9.0) - Ben Walker (20, 6.0/7.0)
3rd Line: Taylor Crunk (18, 6.0/6.5) - Trent Lofthouse (18, 6.0/7.0) - Brandon Fushimi (17, 5.0/7.0)
4th Line: Mitch Deacon (20, 5.0/6.0) - Logan Fisher (17, 5.0/6.5) - Shane McMahan (17, 6.0/6.5) *signed FA*
Odd man out: LW Gianni Evangellsti (17, 6.0/6.5) *signed FA*

Season Projection:
Barring significant injuries, I expect to be somewhere right around where the Royals actually are which is fighting for the 3rd-4th spot.

September 20th: Victoria Royals (0-0-0) @ Vancouver Giants (0-0-0)
Patrik Polivka gets the start for the Royals while it's Peyton Lee in net for the Giants.

The Royals would start out strong, getting the first goal of the game just 3:56 in off the stick of Shane McMahan (Hicketts, Deacon) and keep it going as Steven Hodges (Gagnon, Carroll) would make it 2-0 at the 8:14 mark before Brandon Magee (Gagnon, Hodges) would quickly make it 3-0 just 12 seconds later. After that it seemed that they let up a bit as a few minutes later they would be given a PP opportunity that they would get only get one shot on (and just a couple seconds into it at that) and it seemed to give the Giants momentum but Polivka was strong and the Royals would lead 3-0 after the 1st and hold a 12-8 advantage in shots.

The weak effort of the Royals would continue early in the 2nd period, as they would get 2 powerplay chances in which they would only manage a single shot on net, with the momentum shifting, Anthony Ast (Zalitach) would capitalize putting one past Polivka at the 7:08 mark, getting the Giants within 2. After the goal, the Royals seemed to wake up a bit, though neither team could hit the net until the Giants got a late powerplay that they would get a couple of shots on but not past Polivka. 3-1 Royals after 2, shots 7-5 Giants in the period, 17-15 Royals total.

The 3rd period would see more Royals missing the net constantly as they wouldn't register their first shot on goal until just before the 8 minute mark of the period, by which time Vancouver had already put 6 shots on Polivka without any success. Once the Royals finally found the net once, it seemed neither team could hit the net as in the final 12 minutes, the Royals would manage just 2 more shots on goal and the Giants 3 as this game would mercifully end with the Royals coming out on top 3-1.

W: Polivka (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .958 SPCT)
L: Lee (0-1-0, 3.00 GAA, .850 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Royals - 0/4 PP, 1/1 PK
Giants - 0/1 PP, 4/4 PK

3 Stars:
#1 - Steven Hodges (VIC) - 1 goal, 1 assist
#2 - Patrik Polivka (VIC) - 23 saves on 24 shots
#3 - Ryan Gagnon (VIC) - 2 assists

The two teams travel to Victoria as the Giants will try to return the favour and ruin the Royals' home opener tomorrow night.

September 21st: Vancouver Giants (0-1-0) @ Victoria Royals (1-0-0)
Both teams turn to their backups in this one as the Royals start Coleman Vollrath who'll be up against Jared Rathjen for the Giants.

Both teams seemed to come out a bit more prepared for this one as they both had already got a shot on net before Taylor Crunk took a tripping penalty 1:08 in. 42 seconds into the penalty kill and it would be Trent Lofthouse (Harrison, Kanzig) putting in his own rebound off of a shot that Rathjen couldn't handle cleanly. Just over 4 minutes later and with the Giants starting to control the play a little, Cain Franson (Hamilton, Houck) would tie it up for the visitors sniping one from the slot past Vollrath. The play would be pretty back and forth after that before Brandon Fushimi (Lofthouse, Crunk) would make it 2-1 on a quick faceoff play. Afterwards both teams seemed to slow it down a bit and the Royals would head into the 1st intermission with a 2-1 lead despite being outshot 12-10 and 1:32 left on a man advantage to start the 2nd period.

The Royals wouldn't convert on the powerplay to begin the period as both teams were rather sloppy until roughly the middle part of the frame. Things picked up quickly though as both teams had chances including a hit crossbar by Magee before Houck would run it up the ice and put one off the post right after at the other end. Magee would hit another post in the period and Rathjen would make an absolute beauty glove save off Hodges in front, but neither team could find the back of the net, keeping the score 2-1 Royals after 2 as the Royals outshot the Giants 11-6 in the 2nd, and the game total 21-18 in favour of Victoria.

The 3rd period would start out a bit slow before Cain Franson would take a slashing penalty 4:30 into the period. The Royals were unable to capitalize but did get a couple shots on net. Afterwards, the two teams would start trading chances but both goalies were more than up to the task making some outstanding saves. Mitch Deacon took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty just past the halfway mark of the period that seemed like it could be costly, but the Royals' penalty killers were excellent, holding the Giants without a shot on goal. Both teams would get a few opportunities afterwards, but nothing to great before Joel Hamilton took an extremely undisciplined slashing penalty with 3:26 left. Victoria wouldn't do much with that powerplay other than kill some clock as that was all they needed to secure the 2-1 victory and a home-and-home sweep of the rival Giants. Shots were 11-7 Royals in the 3rd, 32-25 game total in favour of Victoria as well.

W: Vollrath (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .960 SPCT)
L: Rathjen (0-1-0, 2.00 GAA, .938 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Royals: 0/3 PP (0/7), 2/2 PK, 1 SHG (3/3, 1 SHG)
Giants: 0/2 PP, 3/3 PK

3 Stars:
#1 - Trent Lofthouse (VIC) - 1 goal, 1 assist
#2 - Jared Rathjen (VAN) - 30 saves, 32 shots
#3 - Coleman Vollrath (VIC) - 24 saves, 25 shots

September 22nd:
The key injuries continue to mount for the back-to-back Eastern Conference champion Edmonton Oil Kings as C Riley Kieser (20, 7.0/8.0) will be out for at least 3 months with a fractured fibula.

September 24th: Spokane Chiefs (1-0-0) @ Victoria Royals (2-0-0)
It'll be Eric Williams (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .968 SPCT) in net for the Spokane Chiefs up against Patrik Polivka (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .958 SPCT) for the Royals.

54 seconds into the game and Austin Carroll takes a kneeing penalty. The Chiefs get a couple of shots on net, but nothing past Polivka. Apparently the penalty kill put our offense into a coma as we couldn't hit the net for the life of us for most of the period, despite the possession being about equal until near the end of the period when the Chiefs would hit back-to-back-to-back posts in a matter of roughly 45 seconds, though luckily, anything that could get in the net, Polivka was there to stop. No score after 20, shots 12-6 in favour of Spokane.

The 2nd period would see both teams come out hitting everything but the net before Riley Whittingham (Smith) would put the first shot on goal of the period for either team past Polivka at the 3:46 mark to give Spokane a 1-0 lead. Just 32 seconds later, Steven Hodges would take a kneeing penalty. Spokane was unable to capitalize, not managing a shot on net, but 10 seconds after the penalty had ended, Steve Heller (Holmberg) would score giving the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. The Royals would wake up a bit after that but still couldn't hit the net with any sort of frequency so it was almost a complete surprise when Austin Carroll (Magee) scored with 3:26 remaining in the 2nd to get the Royals within 1, which is how the period would end. Shots were 8-8 in the period, 20-14 through 2 in favour of the Chiefs.

The 3rd period saw the Chiefs come out absolutely storming as they would put 5 or 6 shots on Polivka in the first few minutes, though he was able to keep them all out. The Royals would eventually find a gear and at least get the play to about even, at least until Jack Walker took a roughing minor just past 8 minutes into the period. The Chiefs offense would wake right back up firing 4 shots onto Polivka but still not able to get any past. The all-Polivka penalty kill seemed to energize the Royals a bit though and they began controlling the play a bit including a sequence where Fransoo rang two off the posts and Hodges was robbed by Williams. Despite all that though, the score would remain 2-1 Spokane until finally with 4:30 left in regulation, Ben Cote (Fisher, Gagnon) would rip one from the top of the faceoff circle past Williams to tie the game up at 2. The Royals would keep up the pressure but weren't able to get another past Williams before the Chiefs would return fire in the final minute of regulation, though they couldn't manage to find the net, let alone the back of it, sending this game to OT tied at 2. Shots were 14-8 Chiefs in the period, for a game total of 34-22 in favour of the visitors.

Overtime wouldn't see a ton of action in it with both teams registering just a shot a piece before Steve Heller would win an offensive zone faceoff to Reid Gow, who sent it over to Mitch Holmberg and then back to Heller who one-timed it past Patrik Polivka to give the Chiefs a 3-2 overtime victory. Shots 2-1 Chiefs in OT. 36-23 total.

W: Eric Williams (2-0-0, 1.47 GAA, .944 SPCT)
L: Patrik Polivka (1-0-1, 1.96 GAA, .933 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Royals: 0/0 PP (0/7), 3/3 PK (6/6, 1 SHG)
Chiefs: 0/3 PP, 0/0 PK

3 Stars:
#1 - Steve Heller (SPO) - 2 goals
#2 - Mitch Holmberg (SPO) - 2 assists
#3 - Patrik Polivka (VIC) - 33 saves, 36 shots

The two teams are back at it tomorrow with the Royals looking for redemption. And hopefully some more shots on net.

Garrett Hughson gets his 1st start of the season for Spokane, while Coleman Vollrath (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .960 SPCT) gets the start for Victoria.

This game could be summed up rather easily, untimely penalties for Victoria and a goalie that apparently really wanted to show his coach that maybe he should get a few more starts on the other end of the ice.

Another game, another goalie standing on his head. Add in a couple of against the grain goals, a powerplay that just can't put one in and you've got a 3rd straight loss (2nd in regulation)

October 1st: Victoria Royals (2-2-1) @ Prince George Cougars (1-2-2)
It's a battle of Victoria present and past as the Royals and Cougars faceoff for the first time this season. In net for the Royals will again be Patrik Polivka (1-1-1, 2.30 GAA, .914 SPCT) while it'll be Mac Engel (1-1-0, 3.66 GAA, .900 SPCT) in between the pipes for Prince George.

Things would start out ugly for the Royals tonight and not get much better as the night wore on in an ugly 7-3 loss to the Prince George Cougars. Royals starter Patrik Polivka would allow 3 goals on the first 6 shots he faced before being pulled for Coleman Vollrath who would end up allowing 4 goals on 31 shots. With the two teams playing again tomorrow night, there will be some pretty big changes in the lineup most likely.

Rough 0-3 stretch there, Spokane was understandable, Kelowna will be an elite team this year but Prince George? And our worst game out of the 3? Yikes. At least we scored 3 times I suppose but still.

Coach's Thoughts:
I thought we played pretty well in the 1st period, just were a bit unlucky I believe we hit 3 or 4 posts in the first half of the period but then our play dropped off a bit from there, not sure why. Maybe the guys were feeling a bit discouraged? Our 2nd period was absolutely terrible, we got the goal from Hodgy but if it wasn't for Polly coming up big for us often it could've got really ugly there. 3rd period I liked our compete right from the get go, got rewarded with the goal from Carroll but then guys that should be "leaders" on this team go taking penalties after we tie it. Can't have that if you expect to win in this league, and we have far too often from some our key guys but you just can't have it.

October 4th: Victoria Royals (2-4-1) @ Kamloops Blazers (2-2-0)

Coach's Thoughts:
That was as complete of a 60 minutes as you can play as a team I think, we were strong throughout and when they tried to push back we shut them right down. It was good to see our guys not get frustrated tonight like they seemed to in our past few games when we couldn't get one past their goalie, who was absolutely amazing tonight for them but we kept at it and eventually it paid off. Polly wasn't busy but made a couple saves when we needed him to, all around great effort tonight and hopefully we can carry the momentum from this game forward.

October 5th: Another 1st round prospect for the 2014 NHL draft is injured, as the Red Deer Rebels will be without D Haydn Fleury (7.0/9.5) for 3 weeks as he's out with a bruised spine.

October 6th: Tri-City Americans (1-6-0) @ Victoria Royals (3-4-1)
Winnipeg Jets draft pick Eric Comrie (1-4-0, 2.56 GAA, .919 SPCT) gets the start for Tri-City tonight, and for the Royals it'll be Patrik Polivka (2-3-1, 2.50 GAA, .905 SPCT) two nights off of a shutout in Kamloops.

Final Score: Tri-City Americans 4, Victoria Royals 3 (SO)

W: Eric Comrie (2-4-0, 2.59 GAA, .913 SPCT)
L: Patrik Polivka (2-3-2, 2.55 GAA, .908 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Americans: 1/8 PP, 2/2 PK
Royals: 0/2 PP (3/29, 1 SH), 7/8 PK (32/37, 1 SH)

3 Stars:
#1 - Michal Plutnar (TRI) - 2 assists
#2 - Patrik Polivka (VIC) - 32 saves on 35 shots
#3 - Logan Fisher (VIC) - 1 goal

Coach's Thoughts:
I felt we started out where we left off against Kamloops in the 1st period and for the start of the 2nd, but then we started taking penalties and our game just really started dropping off as our guys weren't getting their regular shifts. Luckily Polly kept us in it in the 3rd there, especially the one sequence in our zone where he must've stopped 5 or 6 shots in a 20 second span there then Fisher manages to put one past Comrie with our net empty to at least get a point if not two. Overtime, we again take a penalty and at that point you pretty much hope it comes down to a coin flip, it did and we were on the wrong end of it. Oh well, we were lucky to get even just the one point tonight and we need to have some more discipline if we want to win the next one.

Coach's Thoughts:
I thought we played a pretty decent game aside from that last 10 minutes in regulation when our guys apparently didn't feel like pushing the puck ahead and just wanted to play defense and it ended up costing us a point. Definitely had our chances to put it away earlier, but our powerplay was awful tonight. They might've had as many shorthanded chances as we had powerplay chances and that just can't happen, some guys really need to step it up in that area, stop trying to do too much and just put some pucks on the net and go get the rebounds.

Kelowna loses D MacKenzie Johnston (7.0/8.0) for 4 weeks with a separated shoulder.

October 12th: Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-1-2) @ Victoria Royals (3-4-3)

#1 - Trent Lofthouse (VIC) - 2 goals
#2 - Coleman Vollrath (VIC) - 32 saves on 33 shots
#3 - Jack Walker (VIC) - 2 assists

Coach's Thoughts:
A lot like last night in that we played pretty well throughout the entire game until near the end, though we were definitely a bit less passive tonight and it didn't help losing Cotes in the 1st, really forced Keegs and Hicks into a lot of extra minutes. A few more penalties than I'd like but our PK was pretty good and Lofts had a huge game for us in that regard and on the scoresheet. Was also glad to see Cole play well in net after such a long time in between starts.

D Brett Cote tore his meniscus in the 1st period and will be out for 4 weeks. Kolton Dixon will check into the lineup, playing on the 3rd pairing with Jack Walker, while Joe Hicketts will slot up to the 2nd pairing with Jordan Fransoo.

October 14th: Prince George Cougars (4-4-2) @ Victoria Royals (4-4-3)
Prince George leads the season series 2-0. Mac Engel (3-2-1, 3.16 GAA, .907 SPCT) gets the nod for Prince George against Patrik Polivka (2-3-3, 2.44 GAA, .911 SPCT) for the Royals.

Final Score: Prince George Cougars 4, Victoria Royals 3

W: Mac Engel (4-2-1, 3.14 GAA, .912 SPCT)
L: Patrik Polivka (2-4-3, 2.63 GAA, .907 SPCT)

Royals: 0/4 PP (3/39, 1 SH), 3/4 PK (39/46, 2 SH)

3 Stars:
#1 - Mac Engel (PG) - 42 saves on 45 shots
#2 - Taylor Crunk (VIC) - 1 goal, 2 assists
#3 - Brandon Fushimi (VIC) - 1 goal, 2 assists

Coach's Thoughts:
Got off to a great start, they fought back a little. Lead by 1 after 1, we throw everything including the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, bathtub, toilet, anything we could throw at Engel we did and he absolutely stood on his head to keep his team in it. 3rd period comes along, take a bad delay of game penalty and they start throwing everything they have at Polly who did at great job stopping the first 7? shots they had in the first minute of that powerplay before they got one past. Understandable, but that only tied the game, you can't let yourself get down like that and proceed to let in two more quick ones to quickly put us down two, just have to shake off that first one and re-focus. Tough loss, hopefully we'll learn from it and move on.

Special Teams:
Cougars: 0/2 PP, 2/2 PK
Royals: 0/2 PP (3/41, 1 SH), 2/2 PK (38/44, 2 SH)

3 Stars:
#1 - Mac Engel (PG) - 31 saves on 31 shots
#2 - Alex Forsberg (PG) - 2 goals
#3 - Raymond Grewal (PG) - 1 assist

Coach's Thoughts:
We started out poorly, but we improved as the period went on before having another great 2nd period and for whatever reason, we just can't beat Engel though scoring has been a problem for us all season. We definitely need a guy or two to start stepping up on the offensive end consistently or we're going to have to try and bring in some guys who can.

We lost Luke Harrison to a strained hamstring midway through the 2nd period, he'll be out for 3 weeks, allowing Ryan Donaldson to step into the lineup.

October 18th: Victoria Royals (4-6-3) @ Tri-City Americans (4-8-0)
Patrik Polivka (2-4-3, 2.63 GAA, .907 SPCT) is back in net for the Royals up against Eric Comrie (4-5-0, 2.38 GAA, .920 SPCT) in a rematch from October 6th when the Americans beat the Royals 4-3 in the shootout in Victoria.

W: Patrik Polivka (3-4-3, 2.46 GAA, .915 SPCT)
L: Eric Comrie (4-6-0, 2.44 GAA, .916 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Royals: 0/0 PP (3/41, 1 SH), 6/6 PK (44/50, 2 SH)
Americans: 0/6 PP, 0/0 PK

3 Stars:
#1 - Patrik Polivka (VIC) - 32 saves on 33 shots
#2 - Shane McMahan (VIC) - 1 goal, 1 assist
#3 - Beau McCue (TRI) - 1 goal

Coach's Thoughts:
Started out great, had 8 shots before we took that penalty and then the tables turned. Seems like every time we were doing something well, we took a penalty to kill our momentum, luckily the penalty killers were all great tonight and we got a couple of opportune goals.

Trent Lofthouse fractured a rib early in the 1st period and will be out for 3 weeks while Taylor Crunk is day-to-day with a bruised shoulder that he sustained at some point in the game. With Lofthouse and Crunk out, Gianni Evangellsti will see his first action of the season while new signee Ryner Gorowsky will also slot into the lineup tomorrow in Spokane.

Coach's Thoughts:
Absolutely brutal start to this one, take a penalty right off the opening faceoff, allowing a powerplay goal, take another penalty right after. Definitely could've been the start of a long night but our guys battled back and I felt really dominated the play for most of the night, we just have to learn how to play a bit better with the lead in the 3rd, too many times this season we've let teams get back into it now.

3 Stars:

#2 - Reid Gow (KEL) - 2 assists
#3 - Ben Walker (VIC) - 1 goal

Coach's Thoughts:
Another start where we take a penalty right off the bat, really need to stop doing that. Luckily Kelowna was a bit undisciplined early on as well so they couldn't build up too much momentum. On the actual game, I felt they outplayed us for most of the game, though not by a ton. I just felt their overall effort level was better than ours but we got some solid goaltending and a couple of our guys stepped up in the 3rd to tie it up after being down 2 early in the 3rd there. Hopefully we can match their effort level tomorrow and pull out a 2nd W.

October 26th: Kelowna Rockets (9-2-1) @ Victoria Royals (6-6-4)
Jackson Whistle (1-1-0, 3.50 GAA, .904 SPCT) gets the call in between the pipes for Kelowna tonight, going up against Coleman Vollrath (2-2-1, 2.54 GAA, .909 SPCT) for the Royals.

#2 - Liam Stewart (KEL) - 1 goal, 1 assist
#3 - Connor Chartier (KEL) - 2 assists

Coach's Thoughts:
I felt our effort was much better tonight, and unfortunately we come out with the shootout loss. It happens, goalie played well, though perhaps we need to actually start shooting less and trying to get into better positions. We'll see what changes we can come up with for the next one.

November 1st: Red Deer Rebels (8-7-0) @ Victoria Royals (6-6-5)
It's the battle of the Patriks tonight as it'll be reigning CHL goalie of the year Patrik Bartosak (6-3-0, 2.53 GAA, .906 SPCT) for the Rebels and Patrik Polivka (4-4-3, 2.49 GAA, .915 SPCT) for the Royals.

#1 - Patrik Polivka (VIC) - 23 saves on 23 shots
#2 - Steven Hodges (VIC) - 1 goal
#3 - Patrik Bartosak (RDR) - 24 saves on 25 shots

Coach's Thoughts:
Not a bad effort tonight, the whole game was sort of sloppy through out but that happens and we played well defensively as a group. Also, I thought the last 5 minutes of the game might've been our best, we hit 3? 4? posts in it but just couldn't get that insurance marker but turns out we didn't need it since Polly kept the door shut the entire game.

Coach's Thoughts:
Great game by us after the first 10 minutes. Dominated throughout and I thought overall our guys showed a lot of mental toughness tonight, letting in that first goal right away, then getting stymied through 2 periods but they kept at it and got the result they deserved.

November 5th: Taylor Leier (7.0/8.5) of the Portland Winterhawks is out for a month due to a strained rib cage muscle and for us, Brett Cote returns from injury, meaning he'll slot back into the lineup while Kolton Dixon goes back to the press box.

Pretty good game by our guys against an elite team, despite what their record currently sits at, seeing as how they're the back-to-back Eastern Conference Champs. Got a bit undisciplined at times, but overall we played pretty well and despite the 30 shots at Polly, they had very few grade A chances and any time they did he was there to stop them.

Ryan Donaldson fractured his foot and will be out for 4 weeks but Luke Harrison finally returns from his injury.

Royals: 0/1 PP (4/63, 1 SH), 3/5 PK (65/75, 2 SH)
Thunderbirds: 2/5 PP, 1/1 PK

3 Stars:
#1 - Christian Elsborg (SEA) - 2 goals, 2 assists
#2 - Alexander Delnov (SEA) - 3 assists
#3 - Brandon Magee (VIC) - 1 goal, 1 assist

Coach's Thoughts:
Lack of discipline finally caught up with us tonight. Simple as that. Just because we can't seem to score with the man advantage doesn't mean other teams can't. Also wasn't happy with how poorly we played for most of the 3rd period, knowing we need 2 goals. Need to be better with the discipline tomorrow against Portland.

Kootenay Ice D Jagger Dirk (8.0/8.5) will miss the rest of the season with a fractured elbow while Trent Lofthouse returns for us, meaning Ryner Gorowsky checks out.

Coach's Thoughts:
Tough game against a great team that we managed to win. Great showing from our guys to battle back there in the 3rd. A bit concerned with our lack of energy to start periods lately though, definitely something we need to correct. Aside from that though, we played pretty well, bit undisciplined in the 1st though we fixed that and our powerplay units finally started to click, hopefully we can keep that going moving forward.

The Tri-City Americans will be without C Connor Rankin (7.0/8.0) for 3 weeks with a strained achillies tendon and the Vancouver Giants will be missing Jackson Houck (7.0/9.0) for a month due to a fractured jaw.

Coach's Thoughts:
Chippy first, but the guys were relatively composed and we left it up 3-1. Then for some reason we decided to take penalty after penalty after penalty to let Seattle to get back into it. Then a mental breakdown leads to a shorty in the 3rd for them to tie it. We played great physically, but our mental game was pathetic tonight. Maybe we just had too much time off in between games, but that happens so we need to be able to come in focused and stay focused.

November 16th: Seattle Thunderbirds (11-10-1) @ Victoria Royals (10-7-6)
It's Justin Myles (5-3-0, 2.12 GAA, .931 SPCT) getting the start tonight for the Thunderbirds while Coleman Vollrath (3-2-2, 2.63 GAA, .904 SPCT) will get the call for the Royals, who are looking for their 1st win of the season against Seattle.

Not sure what to say really after this one. We played pretty well, just had a couple of letdowns late in periods and a horribly mistimed penalty. At some point, the players have to hold themselves accountable and stop making these errors.

Coach's Thoughts:
Scoreboard says we won, though really we were outplayed. Thought the play of Polly really did it for us tonight, they peppered us coming out of the first there, then we take the penalty and he just continued to be amazing and we picked it up right after that kill. Overall though, we were outworked for most of the night and with 3 more games in the next 4 nights, that's going to have to change.

The Kelowna Rockets have lost D Reid Gow (6.5/7.5) for 4 weeks and the Swift Current Broncos will be without G Eetu Laurikainen (7.5/8.0) for 3 weeks.

Coach's Thoughts:
Much better effort tonight by our guys, and not the result we wanted, but that's the way hockey works sometimes. Their goalie played amazing and full credit to him. We'll head home tomorrow, rest up and get ready for the back-to-back against Kamloops starting in a couple days.

RW Ben Walker suffered a thumb contusion and will be out for 3 days, LW Gianni Evangellsti will slot into the lineup until he returns.

November 21st: D Mitch Wheaton (6.5/8.5) of the Spokane Chiefs will be out for 3 weeks.

#1 - Logan Nelson (VIC) - 1 goal, 2 assists
#2 - Matt Needham (KAM) - 1 goal, 2 assists
#3 - Steven Hodges (VIC) - 1 goal, 2 assists

Coach's Thoughts:
Crazy start to that one, seemed both teams just wanted to give the other guys the puck in their defensive zone. I decided to pull Cole after that 3rd goal just because it wasn't a good goal at all and you could tell he was frustrated, despite the first two just being brutal giveaways. I liked the way we battled back after giving up that 4th goal, though our 3rd period was pretty bad, with a couple of just dumb penalties but we battled through it and manage to pull out the win in the coin flip.

#2 - Brandon Magee (VIC) - 1 goal, 1 assist
#3 - Hunter Jackson (VIC) - 26 saves on 28 shots

Coach's Thoughts:
Pretty well game played by us tonight I thought. Top line was clicking offensively which is what you need and defensively we held them to a lot of shots from the outside for the most part other than for a bit of time there in the 2nd where Jackson made a couple of great saves, good to see the kid play well in his first career start and pick up the W.

Prince George Cougars RW Caleb Belter (7.0/8.0) will miss the next 5 months as he underwent surgery to remove bone spurs in his elbow.

Pretty good game for us tonight, the shots weren't entirely accurate as far as showing exactly how the game went, though we were way too passive in that 2nd period and I let them know that during the intermission, 3rd period was much better. We played thinking defense first, but not to stop skating or taking chances counter attacking.

December 11th: The Everett Silvertips will be without C/LW Jujhar Khaira (7.0/9.0) for 3 weeks.

December 12th: Victoria Royals (18-9-7) @ Swift Current Broncos (17-14-3)

So I was doing the next 3 games yesterday when I ran out of time after completing 2 of them, came back to find my computer had restarted itself so the write-ups are gone.

December 15th: Victoria Royals 3, Lethbridge Hurricanes 1
-We were down 1-0 despite heavily outplaying Lethbridge until 5 minutes left in the game when we broke Tai's shutout and then proceeded to score twice more soon after.

December 17th: Victoria Royals 1, Edmonton Oil Kings 2
-A plenty of open ice game with two of the best goaltenders in the league trying to one up the other. It would be Penguins' prospect Tristan Jarry coming out on top in this one though in the final game before the Christmas break. And we lost RW Ben Walker for the season (and finishing his WHL career) due to a torn UCL.

December 23rd: The Medicine Hat Tigers traded LW Boston Leier (20, 6.5/7.0) and their 6th round pick in this year's draft to Kamloops for LW Mitchell Friesen (17, 5.0/7.0), RW Parker Johnson (20, 4.0/4.0) and the Blazers' 12th round pick in this year's draft.

December 24th: The Victoria Royals have made a trade sending C Steven Hodges (19, 6.5/8.5) to the Seattle Thunderbirds for LW Riley Sheen (19, 6.5/7.0) and RW Michal Holub (17, 5.5/7.5). When discussing the deal, the Royals GM had this to say, "Hodges was a good player for us, able to play in all situations but we had too much depth at center and were having to play him on the wing while Seattle had the opposite problem so we made the offer and Seattle accepted it. We'd like to thank Steven for his time here in Victoria and wish him all the best in Seattle."

December 27th: Prince George Cougars (15-18-4) @ Victoria Royals (19-12-7)
Mac Engel (11-8-3, 2.93 GAA, .908 SPCT) gets the start for the Cougars and for the Royals it'll be Patrik Polivka (14-8-5, 2.08 GAA, .926 SPCT) looking to get Victoria their 1st win of the season against Prince George in this the 5th matchup between the two teams this season.

1st Period:
5:40 - Penalty (PGC) - Michael Mylchreest (Holding)
11:44 - Goal (PGC) - Brett Roulston [5] (Assist: Marc McNulty) 1-0 PGC
13:54 - Penalty (VIC) - Ryan Gagnon (Tripping)
16:40 - Penalty (PGC) - Jari Erricson (Tripping)
Shots: 13-5 PGC

2nd Period:
5:30 - Penalty (VIC) - Taylor Crunk (Checking to the Head, 5 Min.)
9:40 - PP Goal (PGC) - Jarrett Fontaine [8] (Assists: Marc McNulty, Jari Erricson) 2-0 PGC
14:56 - Penalty (PGC) - Jarrett Fontaine (Delay of Game)
Shots: 13-7 PGC (26-12 PGC)

3rd Period:
6:00 - Penalty (PGC) - Elliott Bisson (Goalie Interference)
8:02 - Fighting - Jordan Fransoo (VIC) drew with Jarrett Fontaine (PGC)
13:26 - Penalty (PGC) - Zach Pochiro (Holding)
Shots: 18-5 VIC (31-30 PGC)

Final Score: Prince George Cougars 2, Victoria Royals 0

W: Mac Engel (12-8-3, 2.81 GAA, .912 SPCT)
L: Patrik Polivka (14-9-5, 2.06 GAA, .926 SPCT)

Special Teams:
Cougars: 1/2 PP, 5/5 PK
Royals: 0/5 PP (20/144, 2 SH), 1/2 PK (119/145, 4 SH)

3 Stars:
#1 - Mac Engel (PGC) - 30 saves on 30 shots
#2 - Marc McNulty (PGC) - 2 assists
#3 - Jarrett Fontaine (PGC) - 1 goal

Coach's Thoughts:
An absolutely terrible first two periods, before we finally woke up in the 3rd but Engel was up to the task and shut us out the entire way. Need a much better start tomorrow.

Coach's Thoughts:
Eventually we'll start putting away some of these chances, we're too talented not to. Just have to keep at it and the puck luck will eventually start going our way.

We've lost Trent Lofthouse for a month with tricep tendinitis. Ryner Gorowsky will check into the lineup.
